Giving the Tacoma All-Wheel-Drive - Swapping in the 4Runner's T-Case

- Options are nice.
Sometimes All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) is best for certain driving conditions, like roads with a mix of slippery conditions and high traction surfaces. Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD) is better for off-road conditions. I've added AWD capability to my 1st Gen Tacoma, which was not a factory option for the 1st generation. I swapped in a 3rd generation 4Runner's Multimode Transfer Case, which has both AWD and 4WD modes. Be entertained while I stumble my way through it.
This video is NOT a how-to. But perhaps it will inspire you to do the same if you think all this effort is worth it. Only you can decide. I have a more detailed writeup of the process on the TacomaWorld forum, which includes more technical details if you want to try this yourself. Of course, assume your own risk.

Holy crap man. The amount of effort that went into the production of this video and implementation of this idea is commendable. Job well done.
Thanks! I enjoyed making it even though it was quite the project 😂
That’s the first time is see that NO switch take a dump. Nothing more satisfying that proper electro mechanic clunks 🙌🏻
Thanks for mentioning our channel.
No, thank you! I have referenced your videos so much over the years when tackling jobs on my Toyotas.
@@mark.esposito Our pleasure Mark. Happy Wrenching!
That was a gillion hours of work, all said and done. Congrats!
Yes sir, there was alot of work involved. Glad you liked the video!
Mark,
Absolutely outstanding work.
I’m not sure which I enjoy most, the master engineering and craftsmanship, the impossible camera angles, or the cut-to scenes and one-liners!!
I hope the upgraded ride is even more fun as this is to watch!
Thanks so much!
I don't know how I got here on a RUclips binge but.....wow! You went all out on this one. The 3 printer awd indicator with custom solder board and you even hid the wiring harness under a cover where it mounts to the pillar. You even molded a sun shield around the pod. Jesus. Wow. Idk why Toyota didn't offer the addition of awd to the already 4wd trucks! Way to go! An archive for others that may want to do the same thing
I appreciate the kind words! Couldn’t agree more, Toyota should have offered AWD from the get go, plus it would have saved me a bunch of work 😂
Great, something else I didn't realize I need for my Tacoma.
Awesome build!
Me facino la parte cuando imprimes en 3d el soporte para las luces del 4wd 🤘🏻 esos son los detalles que hacen un proyecto algo fantástico
That bit about the 4runner's roll down window in the beginning had me dying
this needs more views and you need more subscribers.
Should absolutely keep making videos
Excellent work!
Thanks so much!
That's an amazing work! I have a 97 with J shifter (owning it since 2009). I am in the T4R forum. I wish mine is AWD but looks like a lot of work is involved. I have a 2000 Land Cruiser and planning a 2023 Armada AWD so that should be enough for the family. Will have 4R as my camping rig. I also got a 21 Taco 4x4 Manual and a Hilux 4x4 Manual.
Quite the fleet! Hoping to get there someday.
Best I've seen, ever. Thank you.
The clear tech info, attention to detail, the detail visuals, hilarious editing.. dude, how do you not have more subs?!
Awesome!
Granted, I had already decided that i would do something like this, but now it's out of the hazy dreamlike phase, and into planning.
I haven't looked yet, and went straight to comment, but I'm hoping that you have links and.. really really really hoping that i can buy those 3D files or printed parts from you.
I have a 2010 trd prerunner, and have been debating which is the best route..
i want a competent daily driver that can handle varying conditions on the fly, and i want to take it on 4x4 offroad adventures with my daughter.. and i want to do it with a Tacoma.
I assume this is possible with the 2nd gen? Or maybe a host of other electrical, censor, or other issues?
Thanks again, I'm gonna go check out what other info you have.
Okay i went to the forum.. excellent write-up!
If this isn't possible on 2nd gen pre(i know it also needs 4x4 conv.), i would sell mine and get the 1st gen. Lol
Bought mine recently for $6k under what i could sell it for, and was thinking about trying to get something closer to what i need, at least 4x4, but 4x4/AWD would be awesome!
Well, thanks again, I'm gonna have to join that forum now, and stop lurking.
@@mrsrabbit2712 Thanks for all the compliments! I’m sure it is possible on the 2nd Gen Tacoma, although I’m not sure if I can say for certain. I believe the 4th gen 4Runners have AWD, but I think it is entirely electronically actuated.
@@mark.esposito oh damn, okay well i definitely want manually actuated, i like levers more.
This makes me lean more toward building a dedicated adventure truck out of a gen 1.
There was a guy on there who did it with a different one, i think he used the FJ T-case. 2WD, AWD, 4WD are the goal here. AWD being a big part of that.
Maybe the T-case can be made manually actuated..?
I'll figure out out. Thanks again!
That was 20mins well spent! Excellent mod and video edit! Those multimode t-cases can drive you nuts!
I’m writing the comments as I watch the video. Dude your putting us to shame. Hard flex with the deutch kit
Didn't even use the kit on this project 🤣 Thanks for watching!
@@mark.esposito yup noticed that but always nice to use deutch, I used one when I wired my j-case to wire up the lights for the dash (Prerunner to 4x4)
timmy the tool man meets Van Neistat - so good
Two channels I love, Thank you!
Great work and a fun video to watch. Nice job.
Thanks!
Really impressive i have to say and that craftmanship is superb👍
This is an Insanely good video!
This is culture ! Men of culture we surely meet again.
great video and beyond great references
Excellent video!!
Would you consider making the center lock/4wd indicator light for a price?
Amazing video and thread on TW. Thank you so much.
Im trying to source the parts for a manual swap on my double cab, and this might be on the to-do list after that.
I have down the equivalent (AWD) to this on my jeep xj, but it is far less intensive.
Thanks for the interest. No plans to sell the gauge. Making the gauge was labor intensive and I’m not sure how to make the gauge transparency layers without purchasing an entire gauge cluster and disassembling it to get the parts I need. Ultimately the gauge would be absurdly expensive to make it worth while.
@@mark.espositoThank you for the reply.
I did not mean make a new cluster. Sorry for the confusion. I was more so thinking along the lines of what you made. Maybe just a slightly different shape. Out of the way maybe behind the 4wd/shift lever.
@@VT5874 Understood. I’m just not sure how to replicate the transparent pictogram layers like you see at 8:58 without taking them from a 4Runner cluster. You can no longer buy just that part from Toyota.
How the heck dont you have more followers. This is some top notch production.
Any new projects coming up for your Tacoma? How about subscriber recommendations?
If so ive been wanting to install a nice 10 inch or bigger touchscreen din radio. Maybe you can DIY one.
I appreciate it! Currently no projects worth making video about :/
One of my favorite channels at the moment is SuperFastMatt
Bro has a rear and center locker, might has well throw one in the front at this point 😂.
great video. Your voice sounds so familiar!
Please appreciate guys damn!
Thanks!
I having electrical issues with my 3rd gen multimode. All switches are testing good, I can jump the Tcase in and out of 4wd. Vsv is working fine up front. Any ideas on what to check next?
Hey there, without knowing what more about your issue, I can’t really help you. Please reach out on TacomaWorld (see video description for my forum posts) and I can get a better idea of what your problem is and I’ll offer any assistance I can.
@@mark.esposito fixed it last night, opened up the actuator and cleaned and regressed the position contacts (they were corroded but the motor was still working ) and it’s perfect now.
Can't wait for gasoline to hit $5 a gallon.
Great job. Do you have a instagram? I would like to ask a few questions if you don't mind
I do, it’s @magic_marker24, although I tend to avoid instagram. You can also reach out to me on the TacomaWorld forum (link to my write up in the description). My username there is CattyWampus
@@mark.esposito just sent a DM. thank you
