I saw Paul Simon on concert in my home town of Durban during the turbalent end days of apartheid. It was revolutionary in so many was. I love love every song on Graceland it is the soul of South Africa with so many talented musicians from my country
Great song from a great songwriter. Might be the best song on a great album. Other great PS songs to check out: Late in the Evening, Still Crazy After All These Years, Slip Sliding Away, Kodachrome, Love Me Like a Rock, Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard, Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover and many more.
When the workers in the South African diamond mines left work for the day, they had to have the soles of their shoes checked in case they'd trodden on any small diamonds while they were working and so could have worn them all the way home (intentionally or otherwise).
I saw Paul Simon on his Graceland tour. It remains the best concert I have ever been to. It wasn't just a Paul Simon concert, it was a festival of South African music. Simon even left the stage at various times. I've also seen Ladysmith Black Mambazo in concert a couple times, which were fantastic shows. RIP Joseph Shabalala. Graceland is one of the best albums of all time.
I love this album and love this song. My favorite performance of this song is the live performance in South Africa. I couldn't see your screen at all so I'm not sure if that's the one you reacted to . If so I'd like to give a shout out to the man playing the trumpet. The late, great, Father of South African Jazz, Mr. Hugh Rammapolo Masekela. Rest in Peace Sir, you helped change South Africa for the better.❤
People always note Paul's lyrical skills, but this song shows off the wonderful smoothness of his voice and melodies and the way he can incorporate just about any style into his music. Other great examples of that are earlier songs like his lullaby "St Judy's Comet" and the doo-wop inspired "Loves me like a rock". And yes, so much of his music is uplifting and joyful - my go-to album when I'm depressed is "There Goes Rhymin' Simon", with songs like "Take Me to the Mardi Gras" and "Was a Sunny Day".
For some reason, I always think of this as Paul Simon's 'bookend' to "Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard," which was also a joyous song, despite being about a serious subject.
It is the genius of joy....Two musical styles intermingling, inviting you in innocently yet seductively. And yes...if you accept that invitation you feel washed with the joy they offer becoming a part of the mix. Beautiful...❤️🎤🎶
Great reaction Salvo! One of the best songs on a great album. We used this as a demo track for the playback gear we built (speakers, amps, preamps). It’s great for showing how speakers are better than headphones (when you can be loud in a space) for the best musical experience.
Love this whole album - check out Under African Skies next - it's lovely. :) Edit: Paul Simon took a lot of flack for this - but I'm so glad he did it.
Love this whole album, like everybody else, but I love me some "African Skies", where Paul duets with Linda Ronstadt, the bestest. This was elegant and beautiful, like your show. Peace on Earth, mate!
You could actually react to the whole Graceland album, track by track. This album and Sting’s Dream of the Blue Turtles album, 2 striking 80’s soundtracks 🐨🇦🇺
Such a great song from the "Graceland" album! Paul Simon is such a great singer songwriter. After his success with Simon & Garfunkel in the 60's, Paul Simon went solo in 1970. He has a huge library of songs such as "Mother & Child Reunion", "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard", "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Still Crazy After All These Years", "Gone At Last", "My Little Town", "Kodachrome", "Loves Me Like A Rock", "The Boy In The Bubble" etc.
Paul got a lot of flack for going to work in South Africa during the apartheid era. But he used the Graceland album to bring the world's attention to the rich heritage of traditional African music, and made international stars out the a cappella vocal group backing him here, Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It's a joyful album.
The group performing with PS, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, had some success here in the UK after their song 'inkanyezi nezazi ' (The Star & The Wiseman) was used in a soup commercial. They toured and we were lucky enough to go and see them. It was magical.
It should never be underestimated how much the Graceland Album really did begin the movement to the end of apartheid in South Africa.... Paul was facing being blacklisted by the whole of the music industry and his fellow 'stars' for daring to record the SA musicians in Johannesburg. due to there being a curfew in place for the Black South African musicians, Paul would smuggle them into the studio after curfew and record their pieces, before returning to New York to write lyrics & piece the sounds together, there is a full documentary on how it was achieved. I am lucky enough to work in and around Joburg and the surrounding townships for 6-months of each year and the youth I come across are all heavily into playing instruments because of Paul Simon - its a pleasure to sit in an evening with the fire burning and all these kids just playing, singing and dancing their hearts out....... by far THE most important Album ever recorded - it literally changed a continent and freed tens of millions of people from apartheid ....
The bass on the Graceland album is next level genius. So different to the monotonous western plodding bass line. The bass in these songs is rhythmic and really gives the songs drive and motion.
Leaving aside Ladysmith, who are awesome, listening to this through headphones, the thing that most stuck out was the late, great Baghiti Kumalo's bass playing. It's pretty wonderful, and I'm lucky enough to say I saw him do it in person.
Paul paid these guys twice scale for their work with him on the album. He's a classy guy. I just realized, no- I didn't mean that facetiously. I mean for real!
Hmmmm……could you try just having a big COPYRIGHT written over the video instead of making it really dark? I’ve seen other reactors do this and it seems to work just fine. And it makes for a more pleasant experience for the viewing as we can still make out the action on the video……..Yes, I’ve seen it many times, but it would still be nice to be able to watch Ladysmith dancing etc. anyway, it’s just a thought. Appreciate you so much! 😁. And thank you for reacting to this song! One of my favorites. .

#Gabrielhenrique I leave as a suggestion for the reaction of the DAYBOMBTV channel, the talented singer, Gabriel Henrique. Gabriel covers Whitney Houston, in the song i have noting. If you prefer, it can be earth song by Michael Jackson voiced by Gabriel, or Stand up by Cynthia Erivo. Thanks.
I'm not sure why you are blacking out the videos when there are a host of other people's reaction videos that are not blacked out. You did this also with We Are the World. I really enjoy your thoughtful comments and reactions, but wish you could do a little bit of basic research to determine that you can show a normal video. It would be so much a better experience for us.
I upload it as is, and when it gets blocked, I reupload it and with a black scale over it to get it passed the copyright. Usually some videos get blocked and you can appeal, but this takes time. That’s why some you see with no altering to it. The way my schedule is I operate day to day because I have a really busy work schedule - so I cannot wait for the appeals, I try and upload anyway I can! I do apologies I still hope you enjoy my videos
"Graceland" is Paul Simon's Masterwork..
Yep. Absolute masterpiece.
Shows off Paul Simons eclectic generosity - how many Western singer/songwriters would even think about doing something like this?
Check out "Under African Skies" with backing vocals by Linda Ronstadt.
Paul is a musical genius, that wasnt afraid of experiment with different sounds, a lot of African , Caribbean and Sudamericana influence
Paul Simon is a musical genius. His music will be a part of our world forever, his lyrics are poetry.
"Graceland" is a masterpiece!
Favorite song by Paul Simon- watch the live version from South Africa. The Graceland album is pure magic.
Paul Simon has an effortless feel to his singing. Like singing you a story
Bikithi Kumalo plays a mind boggling bass on this... Amazing composition... Everyone gets a moment and it all fits like a glove...
Graceland (the album) is one of the best albums of all time. Boy In The Bubble is another great track from ths one.
Every track is gold. I must’ve listened to Under African Skies thousands of times.
You misspelled "The Greatest Album of all time"
I saw Paul Simon on concert in my home town of Durban during the turbalent end days of apartheid. It was revolutionary in so many was. I love love every song on Graceland it is the soul of South Africa with so many talented musicians from my country
Whole album is this great. Graceland.
One of the all time best albums.
Refreshing bright & shiny happy tune. Thank you for your uplifting reaction SalvoG!
Great song from a great songwriter. Might be the best song on a great album. Love this song it lifts me up and makes me happy every time I hear it would those beautiful South African rhythms.
You should also react to "Under African Skies" from the same album. It is a duet with Linda Ronstadt, and the second verse was written for her.
Wow, I'd forgotten that. ❤
Wonderful music 🎶 🎵
Love Paul's experience with 'world music' ! It still holds true that music brings peoples together! This song is so joyful! Loved your singing along!!
All of Paul's songs are unique in their own way
He's so talented
When Paul Simon did his Graceland tour it was so swesome i went back and saw it again..

I was lucky enough to see the Graceland tour with all of the artists featured on the album. Still one of the greatest concerts I've ever seen.
Love this whole album
Joyous.... that is the word you are looking for.
That is the exact word!
Homeless is my favorite song on this album! The live version is amazing. ❤
From one of the greatest American songwriters.
When the workers in the South African diamond mines left work for the day, they had to have the soles of their shoes checked in case they'd trodden on any small diamonds while they were working and so could have worn them all the way home (intentionally or otherwise).
So unique indeed! The tone of Paul Simon's voice makes me smile immediately.

Never got to see Simon, but did see Ladysmith Black Mambazo a couple of times, with Joseph Shabalala. Magical.
Other gems by him, "Take me to the Marti gras", "Lincon Duncan"
This is song is in my top five Simon songs!

the fretless bass... oh my god
One of my favourite cds
An amazing, perfect album. Not a note out of place. I never skip any song.
Whole album is spectacular!
I love this entire album, for me, there are no weak songs.

Boy in the Bubble next up?
Perfection.
Another great song choice. You are getting good at this.
The "Graceland" album is a work of art! I love every track!
This song is pure joy!!! The whole album is magical.
For some reason, I always think of this as Paul Simon's 'bookend' to "Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard," which was also a joyous song, despite being about a serious subject.

The whole Graceland album is fire.
Top 10 album of all time. Try watching this song done live on SNL. It was incredible.
Paul does things different. It's pleasant & relaxing I would say.
Enjoyed watching you listen :)

There's something there for everyone! ❤ Loved It!!
I absolutely adore Lady Smith!!
Love this whole album - check out Under African Skies next - it's lovely. :) Edit: Paul Simon took a lot of flack for this - but I'm so glad he did it.

Call me Al is another good one
So fun!
My first 45 was Paul Simon with Kodachrom and Love Me Like a Rock. So talented
Checkout Pauls song WRISTBAND..its very different too but cool
The group performing with PS, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, had some success here in the UK after their song 'inkanyezi nezazi ' (The Star & The Wiseman) was used in a soup commercial. They toured and we were lucky enough to go and see them. It was magical.
I bought this album on vinyl LP, when it came out, I also later bought the CD. The vinyl record is FAR superior to the CD! Much crisper!
Same,I saw it when he toured with the South African musicians.

The word youre looking for is joyful.
I wore out my original LP, 2 CDs and now Graceland album is on my regular music mix. Best album ever.
This is a beautiful song and a formidable collaboration. Ladysmith Black Mambazo also have some amazing music/albums.
A couple more words may be art and music. This and Graceland are probably Simon's 2 best songs since the 70's.
"Biko" (studio track) by peter gabriel and Artists Against Apartheid - "Sun City"
Graceland LP,totally ear candy.
The poor boy puts on after shave to compensate for his ordinary shoes
A great lyric, just effortlessly floating past...
The bass on the Graceland album is next level genius. So different to the monotonous western plodding bass line. The bass in these songs is rhythmic and really gives the songs drive and motion.
The diamonds on her shoes refers to the girl has diamonds on her shoes from working in the diamond mines
In South Africa

Diamonds. It's Africa. There's diamond dust in every transaction, everything.
Paul paid these guys twice scale for their work with him on the album. He's a classy guy. I just realized, no- I didn't mean that facetiously. I mean for real!
