- What an amazing country to visit and boat in. Montenegro is very special. Join Mark and Fiona as they travel the coast of Montenegro. We come aboard Nordhavn’s very first N51 #adventure #boat #cruise #nordhavn #nz #boating #sailing #yacht #yachting #N51 #Montenegro
Even if your videos were two hours long, I'd still be watching. Thank you for putting as much effort into these videos as you do.
No problems…wow that would be a marathon. Just as well the attention span of our audience is more than the young folk these days as it’s tap and slide tap and slide for them…no staying power
Great video, can't wait till you reach the UK and jock land so keep up the good work fiona and mark, x
We will!
Nice video Mark, as an ‘old salt’ - the British terminology for mooring lines is Bow and Stern lines and Forward Backspring and Aft Backspring. Under normal circumstances that’s all you will need. If the weather is rough , you can double up the bow and stern lines , or put out Breast Lines at right angles to the quay forward and aft. When leaving the dock you ‘single up’ to one or two lines (whatever is needed due to the wind etc. ) So that you only have to let go the minimum at the last minute. Exceptional circumstances can require other procedures but that is the norm. As an ex mariner and retired pilot I’m enjoying your travels 😊
Thanks so much. We work hard on the terminology but keep slipping up
Hi Mark Fiona, another great video really enjoy following your travels, and getting to see parts on thrEaten me I documented to see, thanks
Our pleasure
We just left cruising the Dalmatian coast. You’re going to have a great time. Such a beautiful area! Zadar, Hvar, Dubrovnik and Kotor our favorite
If only we had more time available. In the end we do feel the urge to travel West and South
Hello from the states. Awesome video and scenery. Thank you for sharing. The Mrs. is doing great. She went from tinder captain to vessel captain in training. We love watching your videos once again safe travels and bless you all.
Thank you so much
Great video again. The drone footage was fantastic. I was so immersed in it I forgot to like the video! Don’t worry, I just watched the video again! 😂😂
Haha thanks so much.
Yes, it's not just about getting on the boat and going on a fun trip around the world, there's also a lot of work involved.
Yiip
Oh yes it never stops
Love learning from your learning! Well done🎉 Beautiful viewing! Also we very much enjoy your long Vids! Cheers 🐨🍍👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing you adventures. Your videos are most enjoyable and quite relaxing! I find myself alwats looking to the next one! Stay safe and be blessed!
Glad you like them!
Interesting video with wonderful views of Montenegro. Calm sea, ideal for sailing. I admire your energy and ability to learn. More and more it is appreciated that you dominate the situation with the boat. Unforgettable experiences.
Thanks so much
Loving the videos and the frequency of them. Personally I have no issue at all with the length, in fact I like the longer ones.
Cool
full time job keeping it clean and ship shape ya, just love your under water video. take care guys
It certainly is, thanks
Keep the good work up, waiting already on the next one….
Thanks, will do!
The under the boat segments are great! I like seeing the work you guys need to do, as awkward as that probably makes doing the work...
Mmm thanks
Nice videos, if you use an aft springline the vessel will stay paralell with the pier even with a long bowline
So you mean line from stern going forward?
Yes, from the same cleat as the aft line but going forward
@@AwanuiNZ yes. Now the sternline and the middle line have same direction. İf the middle line is coming from the stern, the ship cannot move forward or backwards and closer to the quai.
Thats an other really good video and the drone shots are great and with that music very relaxing. Still watching from my hospital bed and it was a real tonic. not too long for me fromScotland
Wow that’s been a while now. Hope you are feeling better
As far as I’m concerned the longer the better. The variety of shots under water, on the water and in the sky keep us focussed.
Loved the awesome drone clips at the end. Wonderful effort to keep the Waka clean for guests. I guess my close relatives are in for a treat of Rammel hospitality. Lucky fullahs.
Yip they are David. Not long now and really excited to see them. Wondered where you had gotten to?
@@AwanuiNZ Jenny has been in Gisborne looking after our Mum for the past week and come down with covid. I’m meeting with Ross in about an hour at airport. He’s giving me Paxlovid for Jen and flying straight back to Auckland. A real nuisance as Jen was due to go home and support whanau. She’ll be ok by the time they go to the Mediterranean to hang out with you and Sweetie.
@@davidlangford3841Awe crap that’s no good. I hear Mum got it as well. Bloody Chinese have a lot to answer for. Mum is tough eh? So hope nothing happens to stop Jenny coming over she could do with a holiday….oh that’s right she just got back from Raro!
great vid thanks Mark and Fiona I enjoy them a lot
Glad you like them!
Lekker man lekker 🇿🇦
Thankyou
Wow, what a great episode, looks a beautiful part of the world. I was interested in the underwater segment, looks as though they have a problem with Urchins as well, the rotten things eat everything and just leave the seafloor bare, guess that's why it's called "the urchin barrens", we have the same here in Tassie. Really enjoying your videos, thanks Fiona and Mark. Fair winds.😊
Yip as soon as you get near the shore they are everywhere
Thanks for the latest. I see a couple of comments about length, which is no problem at all. I guess some folks need a reminder of how to use the fast forward function. Lovely to see Fiona at the helm. Important on longer passages or should you ever become incapacitated. Keep up the great work.
We will. Aiming for much shorter videos but more regular. If we are not careful they will become very repetative. By the time I have finished editing I am so bored with each episode!
New Captain, well done !
I reckon
I am thourghly enjoying learning seamanship skills through you learning them. Living in the states the whole Med mooring was a mystery. Excellent videos and love the bantering between you two.
Thank you…we will keep it up!
Need to put some rod holders on your boat.. mind you…looks like you need some rods😂😂
Yip they coming I am having trouble finding ones I like. Almost got there the other day.
Hi Mark & Mrs R, living the dream!! The thruster sounds like warn brushes but assume yours is Hydraulic PTO. is there anything like that on the "motor"
Electric motor. We are currently checking for loose wires into the thruster.
@@AwanuiNZ ah ok, then also check the brushes for heat damage.. can ware out very quick and makes that whale 🐳 pitch sound when you try to engage or disengage.. had to change mine this year with limited use but apparently I’m too aggressive with the thruster…
Thank you Mark and Fiona. Mrs R good Captain. Good stuff. 👏👏The longer the video the better😂. We can watch a bit, take coffee break then come back and watch some more great stuff. I have some suggestions about mooring and unmooring but I am not going to get nit picking. You are learning fast and all going fine. Yes good advice from your friend to try keep even tension on all lines. Some Ports have a lot of surging effect, and also when a strong wind is blowing the boat equal tension on all lines very important. If one line snaps then all sorts of trouble especially if you in a tight berth with other boats close to you. I am sure you watch some utube videos about berthing and unberthing boats but I have one suggestion. If you got free time cut out a shape of your boat on cardboard, only about 10cm to keep it in about scale then put it on your table and practice coming alongside and unberthing against the edge of the table. In this way you can visualise what will happen if you apply different things. You will also see that if you put too much tension on your bow line it will box the bow in, something that appeared to happen to you berthing. So from playing around with the cut out boat you will see how the lines all kind of work like vectors and you can see the resultant effect. In my opinion playing around and thinking in your mind what effect will happen if I do this and that then moving cut out accordingly will be good. May sound a bit funny but I used to do this with my trainee Marine Pilots in the office. I used to give them different scenarios and let them show me how they would berth and unberth . We used simulation programs for a lot of the in house training, same as you with your planes. This is a good time of the year where you are the sea is relatively calm and there does not appear to be much wind and current in the Mainers. Good learning grounds for you and Fiona. When you travel in the oceans even during summer it can be a different story. Your boat will be thrown around whilst underway and berthing and unberthing in rough conditions with wind will be challenging. I know you and Fiona will cope just fine. Nice bread your daughter made. Please ask her to send some by plane to me in Durban.😂
Cheers🛥🛥
Hey thanks so much. Good advice I will try that. Practice makes perfect eh? We going to get the recipe and make a video on it.
Another brilliant video. I get excited waiting for the next episode! As a few others have mentioned, your spring lines should be the longest ones and by using a forward and aft spring you will reduce any surge along the quay (i.e. from the centre cleat on the boat, take one line running forward to a quayside bollard and one running aft). Keep sharing your amazing journey!
Thanks so much. Getting very consistent advice which is encouraging.
Great vid . . Interesting places your visiting . .
Not alot under the water is there . .
Hope the bow thruster is no big deal . . Till next time take care .
Bye from NZ👋🍻🇳🇿twa
I know it’s quite sad. Some places better. Think BT should be fine. Cheers
Great video man ! They are really good we appreciate you explaining the process and cost of entering these countries , cheers 🍻
No worries. We have an episode soon directly related to all the costs.
Good Video--a little less movement on the camera during the cleaning segment -started getting dizzy-👍
Yes I have tried to give that advice……funny I get a strange look back when I comment on it.
@@AwanuiNZ oops don't want that-it was very good video!!
Bar is much more rugged looking than Wellington(the hills I mean) The shape of the hills in the foreground are similar .Very Thorough cleaning job Mrs R. There is a metal polish i used to use called solvol autosol might be a bit too abrasive. did you spend the night in Bar ?I noticed you had moved from the Cutoms dock to a more user friendly dock Ecellent drone work!
Yes we went into the Marina
That looked like a lesser bloody swordfish.
????
@@AwanuiNZ Bloody swordfish are much bigger.
@@Bob-bo8ikwell not always I assume, they grow from babies too. It was about 100m away
Super again) i go with your thought on leaving a little slack in the mooring lines, i do not like rubbing fenders, and also keep in mind the tide. (Not so much in the Med, but anyway.) tight lines are for goats and cows) 😂😉
You and me think alike
Interesting side-note, my parents lived just north of Awanui for many years on West Coast Road 🇬🇸
Ha that word just keeps cropping up. Big River
Tie the stern line on the port side, that will help hold the stern in and you may need to slacken the bow line a bit. Worth a try but without being there it’s hard to say exactly.
In theory you have the springs tight and have slack in the bow and stern lines the springs stop it from surging fore and aft and I the bow lines allow the boat roll without bashing the key.
I hear you
Mark have tied up at that berth, it’s a pig. Had wind blowing me on. You will enjoy Montinegro, sailed there several times.
Been here for two weeks now and loving it that’s for sure
We received very little help for documentation and rude people abound in the tourist offices. So we changed our plans and spent our shengen time in Albania and loved it.
Wow ok so that’s interesting we found Albania not so easy. So far Montenegro great.
You need a first mate to keep up with all of the stainless steel polishing and floor cleaning for you. What I like to do when leaving a dock like this is with only the mid forward spring in place put the outside engine in reverse to pivot the bow of the boat out as far as I need. Engines neutral, Release the mid forward spring and both engines forward and away we go.
Absolutely. We try and dock facing the direction we want to go but not always possible. Most times we seem to end up with the stern facing that direction. Seems to work ok with what we did though. Looking forward to some wind.
Go Fiona, driving, and wharf duty & tender captain. Next you will be doing oil change, fixing stabilisers and water filters when required. .Mark will be putting his feet up with a beer on the top deck as you cross Europe. 😂
Mmmmm…I love the way you think….if only
Great Vid. In case you need a Nordhavn capable marina and service - take Nautica Ranieri in Bari....they are great. I'm on the other side around Lipari next week. Greeting MY SISU
Hey how cool thanks so much.
Clean the stainless with wd40, crc spray on, wipe off
Or
Gumption, apply then wipe off both will help with rust as well.
Wow ok did not know that…thank you
Great video as always! Glad you guys are having fun! Have you ever thought about getting paravanes for when you are at anchor, or a gyro? might help with the side to side motion.
We are going to put more effort into where we anchor so as to avoid the swells. Paravanes are ok but just more stuff to store. We are determined to keep the boat as clutter free as possible. Gyro too expensive at this stage. Finding a place where the bow is into the swell and stern tied off seems the easiest way. Certainly annoying rocking all day and night. I sleep well through it but Fiona does not.
What your teaching me here is I need a yacht that can handle a full crew because I am an absolute Winnie when it comes to these domestic things
Oh would that be nice or what? We do like our own space though.
Should have said if you are looking for a good safe berth in Montinegro in strong Northerly, at the ne corner of the north west arm there is a good berth. Tie up towards northern end on outside. Road out full gale there two years ago, double up lines, wind holds you off. Good food ashore also bus to Kotor
Great thank you
It seems there maybe more fish life in Montenegro waters, it would be good to see some action with that rod I saw on the boat. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about your terminolgy Mark, ropes lines doesn't really matter but I do object to the back of the boat being called the tail. Birds and animals have tails, boats have a stern and a bow at the front. You have somewhat of an excuse though, being a ex-airline pilot.
Absolutely working on it…at least now I pick up when I slip up
I’ve always wondered once you’re underway should you say that you are turning your vessel left/right or port/starboard, as everyone is aware which is left and right when you are moving forward?
Yes I know what you mean.
Since you're checking out what's under your boat where what seems to be next to docks, piers and shallow moorings you might want to pick up a waterproof metal detector, no need for it to be an expensive one, you might be surprised to find rings and old coins, get rich? no, just a way to reduce some of the boring hours.
Haha why not….treasure hunting
Your boat should safier parked, if you make a real spring. So the line you have in the middle, should be from the stern towards the bolder on the land. The boat would be straight to the quai.
Thank you appreciate the feedback
Use a fenderboard. ( between the quay and the fenders )
Never heard of those?
James Bond didn’t pay a tourist tax when he was visiting Montenegro
Mmmmm………good point…not sure it would get us anywhere
Another great video Mark & Fiona. If your anchor was to get stuck, do you have an easy way of getting it free? Or is it a case of cutting it off. Cheers 🥃🏴
So far the sea floor seems pretty good. We try and anchor where others have commented on Navily which avoids that problem. If we were concerned we would have a line to the surface from the head of the anchor with a float for easy pick up. The rocks over here do not seem to be rough more smooth so the bigger problem is getting the anchor to set.
I noticed there's a rotten real on the ceiling of the cockpit that wasn't there the last video I do like the color so if you drop it in the water you should be able to see it
Yip but not much time for fishing yet.
Looks like a lot of stuff that could rip a hole in a fiberglass hull
Yes we have to be very careful. Not a scratch yet!

For mooring you Should get headsets so you don’t have to yell 😊 otherwise known as marriage savers.
Hate the bloody things…spent half my life with a headset on
How am I going to get any work done with these long videos? … that I really enjoy!😊
Good question!
Make sure you do not leave that tube near any sink where somebody might brush their teeth although we brushing their teeth with stainless steel polish yet
Haha…great advice
Hi, great video as usual, I was a little concerned that you do not lock up your boat, when you are doing your adventures, unfortunately boat thefts are common in the Med.
We hear you. Fiona not happy about that either
Mate the problem with your tie up there was very simple, you only had a forward spring out so the boat was doing what is natural to her, the stern, (tail in your case!!!), was being pulled off the dock by the forward spring. When you tie a ship/ boat up alongside to a dock you should have 4 lines out, 1 bow line, 2 forward spring, 3 stern line, 4 aft spring. What I would do if I was you would be to run your bow line and forward spring out that fair lead on the bow, bow line as per normal leading out ahead and the forward spring leading aft to a bollard on the dock just forward of midships. Then on the stern (Tail 😢😢) you stern line leading out aft as per normal and your stern spring leading forward to a bollard/ cleat on the dock just aft of midships. So now if you think about how she was laying there starboard side too, and if you had a stern spring out all you needed to do was put the port engine in eastern and the stern would have come in, then it would have been easy to tighten you stern line and she would have laid straight. If it was the other was and your bow was out just touch ahead on the spring and the bow will come in. You can also use that fairlead midships, with one spring leading forward and one leading aft, it dose the same thing but my preferred way is the first option because if you get a swell coming in and a surge the more scope you have on your springs lines the quieter the boat will lay. Draw a picture of a boat laying alongside with them 4 lines out and you will instantly see what I an talking about. Good luck mate,
Hey thanks so much for the description. It’s interesting as we have only been alongside a few times over here so not getting much practice….will work on it next time.
Mark or Fiona, Is that real wood on the inside, or a laminate.
Laminate
you need to get a different visa... check in but say you wont disembark...meaning you will sleep everynight onboard,.. unlimited time in Europe
Have kind of heard that but not sure all Schengen countries agree with that
Day 1 cleaned top to bottom, what are you going to do day 2. Need some bikes and go touring
Too hot at the moment…35 degrees
And the other thing The only wood on the outside of the boat should be the tequila deck otherwise you're talking about extra maintenance
Totally agree
Be careful of the water around Kota.

Have you priced out how much would it cost to have a local maid to come in and help you do all this extra cleaning?
Nope but it does cross your mind as it is continuous.
Did you looked into the active anti corrosion and active anti fouling protection and galvanic isolation, for the boat and the sea chest the cost will be payed back in a year or so , otherwise you will get a lot of cost to repair clean all equipment, sinks, what gets outside water in , i can not tell you how important this is ,and this beside the cost for haul outs for ant fouling jobs
