I'm OK with some people not liking this. They can stay seated at the tables and mind our coats while the rest of us go on the dancefloor and have a great time.
Controversial my arse, 😂 its just a perfect pop song! Woman likes man, man likes Woman, bingo! 😂 what's not to love! Just a great foot tapping piece of music 🎶🎵🎸🎻 !!
@wendyryder2708 well wendyryder, controversial in the sense that he can get quite vocal! But usually only at weekends 🤣🤣, yep, I just love this song, love the violin and the banjo, taking the place of the usual lead guitar, music, the best therapy ever!
oh please.... I was in college in 1982 I remember this song very clearly I've always been into music and no one absolutely no one was worried or reactive about it being controversial. and remember this was when Prince was hugely popular and yeah... know this was not upsetting to anyone & Prince was amazing as well
Some people look for reasons to be offended. This track is altogether fabulous. I can't hear this track without being reminded of Martin Stephenson & The Daintees. Their 'Wholly Humble Heart' is somewhat different stylistically but it always makes me think of happy summers.
Johnny Ray is seen in the B & W stock footage at the beginning of the video. The girls have Johnny Ray printed on their shoes. His biggest hit was Cry. That's why they called him Poor Johnny Ray.
people with dirty minds might think the chorus is saying a different spelling for the word "come". that's about the only thing i can think of as being risque. btw a violin and a fiddle are the same instrument. my favorite explanation of the difference is "a violin sings, and a fiddle dances".
Have tears in my eyes thinking back to the 80s as a teenager..memories come flooding back so nostalgic. This record was a huge hit and is undoubtedly one of the biggest hits of that decade. I think it was no1 for 6weeks or so. Not sure about the Dungarees though even if they were popular. Can't get everything right though!
Found one commentary that questions "Come On Eileen" is about a paedophile.😅(Search "Is Dexys Midnight Runners’ ‘Come on Eileen’ about a paedophile?" for the original article) Another controversy of the song is not about the content, but whether Kevin Rowland stole the song from ex-bandmate and lied about Eileen was his teenage girlfriend. (Search "The messy truth behind Dexys Midnight Runners’ ‘Come On Eileen’ - betrayal, public apologies and band break-ups for the original article")
Johnnie Ray was a pop singer in the early to mid fifties that had a lot of feeling and soul in his singing and a great voice. I think you should react to a few of his biggest songs and the three biggest are Cry, Just Walking in the Rain, and The Little White Cloud That Cried.
This is on my walking playlist. I love this catchy little ditty and not once noticed it was sexist. I was so wrapped up in the tune, I never paid attention.
Nope it wasn't controversial at the time. Maybe today some might see a guy asking his GF to go all the way as sexist, but really? (PS this video started a mini fashion trend of girls in bibs.)
It's not the lyrics that make it hated by some people. I have a bit of a love-hate feeling for it. It is catchy, that's for sure, but it is kind of bubblegum pop and has no real depth to it. Incorporating the standard Irish instruments is interesting, but they also rip off a few other tunes in the mix. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but overall it seems a little easy, and maybe a little lazy piece of song writing.

One of the best songs ever!! I never associated it with anything controversial?!
Controversial? It was a great track! Played on the radio all the time, we loved it!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
One of the best feel-good songs of all time!

I didn’t know your arse was controversial! lol! Great song!
Bravo!

In the 2020s heterosexuality is controversial.
A song that will never be forgotten, your right it's a catchy song and yes dance floors filled when this disc was played.
Usually the last song of the night. Everyone on the dance floor!!
Always makes me smile ☺️

I like all the different instruments they use.
Again, a timeless classic 😊
Controversy? Surely not

Love the attitude of this one. Thanks.
Love this song! I couldn't hear the controversy, but maybe I'm missing some words.
"Take off your dress!" Woke Virgins hate that line.
My Favorite Song Ever. 😉👍❤️🥰🇺🇸
oh Shawn,,, you know what they are talking about!!
Maybe his innocent in nature..

Johnnie Ray, was a singer, his biggest hit was named “Cry”. 1951.

I never knew it was controversial. It was played a lot. I love it still.
It wasn't back then but today it is among the Woke.
Huge No1 in the U.K.
I was just a kid when this came out and it’s still a hugely catchy pop song. I kinda wish I hadn’t just seen the video.
Loove this song, it's such a bop. Always had a crush on the girl playing Eileen. 😍
The woman in the video (outside the shop in the dungarees) is the sister of Siobhan Fahey from Banarama.
@@advanced_ict Oh that's cool, it makes sense that her sister is Siobhan, she's beautiful as well. 😍
I like this song👍👏👏👏💜☮️

This came out when my neighbor's name was Eileen. The poor Girl caught Hell over it.
The whole album is a fun listen
It was the 80s no snowflakes back then
Please go watch this dance sequence in the movie Perks of Being a Wallflower.”
Try Geno or Jackie Wilson said
The 80's were the best.
This always gets my Scotch Irish blood going!
Johhny Ray a 1950s singer heartthrob
GENO GENO GENO GENO!✌🏻🏴
Such a vibe!
Sugarland does a live version of this song with Sara Barellis and her, along with Jennifer Nettles that's is a really good cover of this song!
One of my teachers told us ( way back then ) this song was nasty and we should all go to the principal’s office 🤔🤭
Lol she was nuts then

Try Men Without Hats "Safety Dance". It's weird but fun. Another fun song is "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow.
Heart - Sing Child (KWSU-TV (1976)
This is an awesome live performance by Heart in 1976
Love to love you baby - Donna Summers was released in 1975. And THIS song is controversial? 🤣
😊😊😊😊
There is nothing controversial about this song.
Many memes came out of this tune...lol.
I've been a fan since day one and I don't recall any controversy with the song.
How is this sexist? Because the guy whose girlfriend was wearing a red dress to look sexy thought his girlfriend looked sexy in the red dress? JFC.
Exactly
In 2024 heterosexuality is forbidden.
Nope it wasn't controversial at the time. Maybe today some might see a guy asking his GF to go all the way as sexist, but really? (PS this video started a mini fashion trend of girls in bibs.)
Sexist? Really? I don’t see it.
Pure 80’s. Just like Kajagoogoo’s Too Shy!
It's not controversial. It's about a boy asking his girlfriend for sex. Nothing wrong with that
Oh good grief. Controversial?!
Puh leez hardly…..Luckily we were grown ups when this song came out ….or at least could behave like one
Its not sexist 😅

Geno is a good one or Jackie Wilson says...
Dexys arre pep pills ie. SPEED.
And they were never heard from again...
Maybe in the Us but not GB with “Geno “ and “Jackie Wilson said” as hits
Such a sing a long lol and get up and dance. Don't remember controversy...
Surely one of the most irritating songs ever recorded.
