Fear names. Names have power in identity. Others can use names as weapons. Names are a hook that can be used to track you across the planes. Remain nameless, and you shall be safe. I am the Nameless One.
LOVE Mark Morgan. So good. For those of you who weren't aware, Mark was the keyboardist for Starship, of "We Built This City on Rock And Roll" and "Sara" fame.
The three things I will never forget about this game: 1. Hitting on zombie women with Mort. 2. Allowing a zombie to use a few pieces of my arm as a snack. 3. Cutting off my ring finger and violently jamming a magic ring finger into the hole.
0:53 to 1:07 is my favourite part of the main theme...it really reminds me of The Nameless One and his journey, and all of the people that are drawn to him and go with him on his journey
Come on! Do we really need to argue about which game is better? Both of them are masterpieces in their own way and that`s what matters. Besides why start insulting people who like this game? Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I`ve played both BG and PS:T and I consider the two of them the pinnacle of fantasy RPG.
Well, I can at least tell you which has aged best. I'm now 26, and I didn't play these when I was a kid, and got no nostalgia for them. I tried them both last year. I got bored of baldurs gate 1 fairly quickly, but tried to finish, but as I got to the main town, I just couldnt anymore...I was bored to death. Planescape torment however....chills all the way!
Henrik Alstad I agree. BG was kinda insipid, though I still wish to take another crack at it and devotedy beat it. PST on the other hand I beat in one jiffy and adored in many different ways.
Both Bg 1 and 2 and PS:T (to a lesser extent ICW) are games I've loved to bits. But PS:T is just too beautiful, too inspiring and the soundtrack is too amazing I go back to that,
Jack Daxter Baldur's Gate is just a "fairytale" (I mean typical high-fantasy) saga. Perfectly done but the setting is not unique at all. While Planescape: Torment is the pinnacle of occidental RPGs in terms of originality and depth. IMO that's what makes it stand out.
BG has the best gameplay in the DnD medium. Planescape: Torment has the best storyline in any videogame ever. Nothing has come close since, and nothing will ever come close again. It would blow my mind to see somebody top it. Not just videogames either. It has one of the best stories ever told, and I am unmovable in that belief. BTW, I played through it for the first time in 2010-2011, so I'm not just wearing my nostalgia glasses here. It holds up.
This theme brings back so many memories... If all games had even a fraction of the depth and intelligence of Planescape Torment, then video games truely would be considered "art".
It's actually a blend of fallout music with baldur's gate music, isn't it? Perfect! I love this music and I'll forever love this game. Best rpg ever. touching, moving, thrilling, but above all really meaningful. Thank you Black Isle guys, whereever you work now!
I love this game so much I am posting a comment just because I am so -thrilled- there are others out there who liked the game as much as I did. I agree whole-heartedly with Mizmaa--you word it perfectly.
I've been playing this for quite a while. Though I'm generally a fan of JRPGs, I will say that this is possibly one of the best games I've ever played. Period.
This game has one of the weirdest settings of all times, you wander across fantastical and terrifying worlds where laws of reality, time, space and logic are twisted and fascinating. And this music encapsulates the feeling fantasticaly. If there would ever be a game or movie about Kult. I'd say Mark Morgan should compose the soundtrack :)
I admire your clarity. This is in fact a kind of question that could be asked in just about any video in RUclips. People tend to comment on unrelated topics all the time (and quite often they do so aggressively). I wish we'd just enjoy the music or otherwise go do something else.
It truly amazes me how well this game is written, a paragraph of written description and dialogue from Planescape is more gripping and vivid than all those uncanny-valley awkward looking 3D models from Elder Scroll, Mass Effect and Final Fantasy 13 combined.
Technically it shares quite a lot in common with JRPGs being a fairly linear story line with only one character option. The beauty of the game is the illusion of choice it provides the character by imitating WRPGs in allowing you to customize the present while being locked into a set past and future for the Nameless One. I have yet to see a game that properly mimics this amazing blend.
I remember seeing the trailer for PS:T on my copy of Baldur's Gate... never got around to playing it, I was too busy giving my every waking hour to the BG games and have now made my way to that king of all time-drainers... college. If I could find this game and the time to play it, I would easily get into it and not give a crap about the aged engine. Playing these games was so engrossing, it was like reading a masterpiece novel that you could *live*. Unrivalled by any game today or tomorrow.
This is one of the few games that totally changed my point of view on what video games should and can be! By far one of the most unique and amazing game I've played. PLAY IT NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T!!
I tried to convince a friend of mine (who's RPG fanatic like me) to play PS:T but with no effect. Dumbass - all I can say. Btw, Mark Morgan is genius!! The guy earned my respect with Fallout's music, but what he did with PS:T is just unbelievable: Main Theme, Deionarra's Theme, Anna's Theme, Fortress of Regrets...
Planeswalker for 17 Eons and counting. Make mine Planescape... Greatest roleplaying moment GM'n MY Sigil, a giant multiversal megalopolis, reminiscent of magical Coriscant. : My buddy's GF was new to RP, early on she fell off a huge walkway on the "sky(plane)scraper", she was intercepted by traffic. An Ancient Gold Dragon that was flying by literally liquified her body across his face... bug on a windshield. Her astral self continued in the campaign, She was a Gith. He was a Tiefling. ;D
This is the best occidental RPG to ever come out. It beats the BGs, Icewind Dales, Gothics or Fallouts. The only game to rival Torment is The Witcher. These two titles share narrative similarities but i think The Witcher is only possible because all this other Rpgs set a series of standards the Witcher came to break.
I remember engaging in stupid arguments about 10 years ago on the Black Isle Studios message boards, because I was a sensitive fanboy and I hated it whenever someone criticized my favorite games. Now reading the BG vs. PS:T arguments here at youtube just makes me feel sad. I love both games. Each one has earned its place in history. I practically grew up on both of them. The elitism that some PS:T fans have is completely unwarranted. They're the same demographic that played BG, by and large.
I just started this game, I've been missing out so much! I thought Baldur's Gate was the greatest RPG, and Sanitarium the most twisted game of all time. Boy, was I wrong!
The thing that did it for me was the copy'n'pasted dungeons. I don't know how much of it you played, but I swear to god there was only four. A beach, a warehouse, a sewer, and a cave. Any time you entered a different cave, a different warehouse, a different sewer, it was always exactly the same as the last. Identical. A shameless copy'n'paste job, I shit you not. The only thing that changed was maybe a door here and there would be locked from time to time, or you'd start at the opposite end.
Exactly. The games are very different, in that I actually liked the combat in BG while in PS:T I avoided it like the plague. PS:T has one of the most profound stories in video game history, while BG merged excellent story and character with gameplay.
Man, need to go back and play this game. I had the discs somewhere, but I might just pick it up from Good Old Games and call it, only 9.99. As for the fantards arguing what's 'best' - Trying to compare them is kind of silly. PS:T had one of those stories where you can't really play it through and rush, it's deep, and merits serious thought and reflection. The Baldur's Gate games had far stronger combat gameplay, and was entertaining, and a good story. Both are among the greats, respect them.
All the people freaking out about JRPGs need to watch the credits video of PS:T. In the "THANKS" section at 1:40, they thank FFVII and FFVIII for inspiration. There you have it the PS:T team liked FF. You can all stop flaming now.
QFT. Same situation as Baldurs Gate really. Black Isle/Bioware crafted great games because they told a great story - with a beginning, a middle and an end... something that's often forgotten in this day and age, with a desperate need to plurp out as many sequels as possible.
I've always simplified the BG vs. PS:T dispute to: - Baldur's Gate is awesome. - Planescape: Torment is awesome. Enjoy both and tolerate the crap out of people who don't like these games, or only one of them. They have all my compassion :(
Agreed. The first one was fantastic. Infact. Fuck it. You've convinced me to do another playthrough of it again. Thats how good it was. The second one? Oh wow. I mean not only do I not get to pass down my character but they've decided to replace him with the medieval equivalent of the worlds gayest biker? Didn't even buy it. Played a friends copy, then became proud of my decision. People want to play as the same character they created. Baldurs Gate series nailed that.
I think that you can't compare FF and BG/Planescape. This is so different story, so different approach. All of them are equal, all of them are the best, all of them are genial.
@MekaGabe Apples and oranges. Chrono Chross and Final Fantasy are both great, Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate etc. are also great, but they cannot be compared because of how different they are. Suffice to say that they are great in their own ways and styles.
I got that game, but never played it. Maybe I should start it right after Empire: Total War :D So long Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are my favourite RPGs beside Zelda: A link to the past, Secret of Mana and Morrowind.

What happens when an immortal (now perfected immortal) fuses with his immortal mortality? Or (if you got this ending) a immortal kills his mortality? I for one say he is still alive, even without the immortality granted to most blood war participants.

Fear names. Names have power in identity. Others can use names as weapons. Names are a hook that can be used to track you across the planes. Remain nameless, and you shall be safe. I am the Nameless One.

How I love Planescape, the tabletop RPG setting and the PC game.

Started to play it again from the beginning... excellent story, the greatest RPG of all time

Mark Morgan is brilliant. I love how the beat is reminiscent to that of New Reno's in Fallout 2.
I finally played Planescape: Torment and I'm glad I did.
I could die happy listening to this relaxing piece of music.. ahh, just drift away dreamily and then wake up refreshed :)

it has been so long since i last listened to this song.... i feel as if i just revived in the dustmen temple in Sigil....
It truly amazes me how well this game is written, a paragraph of written description and dialogue from Planescape is more gripping and vivid than all those uncanny-valley awkward looking 3D models from Elder Scroll, Mass Effect and Final Fantasy 13 combined.
Just listening to this makes you wanna play again. The whole game in one sitting.
Technically it shares quite a lot in common with JRPGs being a fairly linear story line with only one character option. Best storyline ever...
if you are reading this and havent played this masterpiece yet, you are a fool
Thanks for posting this video to us.
Feel exactly the same. Those three games are simply the best ever.
The best game I've ever played by far. Anyone else been drawing Modron Maze maps on a piece of paper?
Thanks to that I managed to beat it.
This game made me cry my eyes out more than once.
I remember seeing the trailer for PS:T on my copy of Baldur's Gate... never got around to playing it, I was too busy giving my every waking hour to the BG games and have now made my way to that king of all time-drainers... college. Planescape doesn't come to you. You to go Planscapes.
Best game ever
I've never played either Planescape or Baldurs so I count myself privileged to not have to compare the two ;-) Oh and nice music by the way...
This is one of the few games that totally changed my point of view on what video games should and can be! By far one of the most unique and amazing game I've played.

I agree with every way :) New games are only the shadows of old rpg games like BG, PT or ID.

UPDATED MY JOURNAL
QFT. Same situation as Baldurs Gate really. Black Isle/Bioware crafted great games because they told a great story - with a beginning, a middle and an end... something that's often forgotten in this day and age, with a desperate need to plurp out as many sequels as possible.
The pinnacle achievement of Black Isle.
You're right, I thought I was the only one that noticed that.
Hey Chief, you okay? You playin' corpse or you puttin' the blinds on the Dusties? I thought you were a deader for sure.
"What can change the nature of a man?" Many things can change the nature of a man. I don't think there ever was a right answer to that question
Immortality.
Torment
nothing
Now I can answer this more firmly - suffering. Too much suffering. Being lied to beyond what is normal also can change a nature of a man.
I've always simplified the BG vs. PS:T dispute to:
- Baldur's Gate is awesome.
- Planescape: Torment is awesome.
Enjoy both and tolerate the crap out of people who don't like these games, or only one of them. They have all my compassion :(
Best CRPG I ever played
Well, here's to hoping the new KOTOR MMO will make all of us happy!
You listened a song and remembered your 'name'
@MekaGabe

"What can change the nature of a man?"
*Torment Symbol pans onto screen*
PS:T was a great game, BG was a great game.
I don't give a shit which one you think is better.
*Listens to great music*
imho, the best soundtrack for the best CRPG ever made.
..and then wake up refreshed, and full of scars, on a slab of stone, is probably what you meant. :>
makes me wanna save the day =D
I love this sound track
I got that game, but never played it. Maybe I should start it right after Empire: Total War :D So long Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 are my favourite RPGs beside Zelda: A link to the past, Secret of Mana and Morrowind.
5 people are jelaous about Morte's sense of humor.
all 3 were great games but i think bg was the best in story and in combat a truely legendary game
how i miss old rpg games
hey you ! listen this soundtrack ! the best main theme ever in a videogame...XXXDDD
Last I saw, Dragon Age is looking very much like a spiritual successor, though with modern technology and no D&D licence.
THIS MUSIC REMINDS ME OF VAULT CITY FROM FALLOUT AT THE BEGINNING
Warning: if you play this game you will never be the same again
PST was a brilliant concept. Great characters, music, story. But it lacked abit of polish. BG was a great game. Good story, great characters, music and adventure. BG II was one of the nicest looking games that used the infinity engine. It had combat, story, adventure, conversations...it was a better game/series (but only just). However, most subsequent RPGs seem to tarnish the "elves and dragons" type fantasy setting to the point where, in retrospect, PST seems fresh and unique.
@Biake22 if you like game mechanics of BG2, and some oldschool hacking and slashing, go for icewind dale(IWD 2 is much more challenging :D), if you want to play a game with great story, go for Planescape torment, if you want to play online Neverwinter Nights is the best choice. Lionheart didn't impress me with anything.
Yeah. There are few games with such inner power as PS.
@premier6666:
There are mods (search for widescreen mod, etc) that upgrade the visual side of PS:T.
It is still well worth playing - and much better than BG2.
@Scarab1233 It's that hollow BONNNNGGGG noise.
Actually, remix this with Vault City. "What can change the nature of a man?" "MINUS 20!"
@EntreriSeraph
my exact feelings towards this game.
It changed my way of thinking, living, perceiving things.
Best game in the entire universe. Too bad people don't play it because of GRAPHICS GRAPHICS and WALLS OF TEXT TEXT TEXT NO ACTION.
Well, that's their problem.
Faerún has its share of good games... BG1&2, Eye of the Beholder 1&2...
Which game should I get? I really love Baldur's Gate, but I want to try one of these. Or a suggestion? Let me know all info please.
Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale
Neverwinter Nights
Why you say? Faerun is the most popular universe, Torment is for the small load of fans. Who can make a game of such quality as Torment? Bioware, with some of their ex-Black Isle personnel.
And since EA owns Bioware there will be Faerun and Faerun again, then again and once more. You know why.
It's a D&D-based game made my the same studio with the same project leader [I believe] - its inevitable the two will be compared when either one is mentioned.
@fridman007 lol, i have it already on my right arm, except the runes are white as tears, its better imo that way
I have five fingers on each hand, and I love them all.
Symbol of torment.

SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!!
Heck i was able to merge with Transcendetal One(sorry if I misspelled his name), best Ending
Guys check out Torment:Tides of Numenera, it is a new game and a spiritual successor to planescape torment created by the same people as planescape :)
and it sucks
Seeing as who makes T:ToN this is as close as we will ever get to having PST sequel.
Baldurs Gate 1 can be played with the Baldurs Gate 2 engine. Google it.
Indeed, I don't doubt it. BioWare/Blizzard/Wizards of the Coast make some EPIC games... or should I say *used* to make some EPIC interactive legends. This is why I think video games will one day completely wipe out movies from entertainment.
I wonder how much PS:T goes for on Amazon right now? (checks as soon as done with comment)
One RPG that I really liked
The story music and everything
Though I never finished it :( I stucked in Modron Cube
I hope you were able to finish it atleast once under these ten years :)
@Stashix Dude, how else could you possibly solve that otherwise? :P
