      The Fangirl
      First of all, I love the Coraline theories you've made, I actually watched all 13😂
      Second, I think I just found another detail that could add up to the "Forever trapped in the Limbo" theory.
      I was re watching the movie and I noticed that the cat started speaking right when they entered the tunnel. I mean, I guess the tunnel IS part of The Other World, but for me the tunnel is just a connection between the two dimensions, so why would the cat speak in the tunnel instead of speaking when they arrive to the other world?
      It may be a stupid thing, but I just wanted to point that out.
      ps: Love your videos!

      I always knew that she was trapped, based on the cat disappearance and music at the end. When I saw it in a packed theater, I think we all knew that she lost because we waited for the very long end credits (before it was cool) to see if the movie gave us a clue. When you see the "mice" animation at the end, it really sunk in that the garden party was just another ruse like the other fun adventures she had in the Beldam's realm. We lied to ourselves about the ending clues that she was trapped, just like Coraline is lying to herself about escaping.

    Here's something I realized - when Coraline was given the message from her "parents" asking for help through the mirror, she was already in the pink palace limbo. Why would Beldam want her to go back to the other world if she's already in the limbo? She doesn't need that, does she? She can feed off the magic with no problem. If in the end Coraline was locked up in the limbo forever, that means that Beldam doesn't need Coraline to be in the other world to get the magic. So why would she create a fake cry for help from the parents? It doesn't make sense. Yes, it would prolong the movie, but it wouldn't make sense for her to do so.

      It was made to make her 100% sure that the world that she was leaving and therefore returning to was the "real world" so she'd never want to leave once she "saved" her "real parents" it was a trick to make her not want to leave the limbo as she thinks it's the real world that's why she throws away the key and makes sure she can't escape because she believes that she has escaped...

    • @layladugger3007
      @layladugger3007 6 лет назад +11

      Antonia Popescu just a theory but,i think the cat could be the boy in the painting whos eating ice cream.and he knows so much about the world bcuz he was the child in between 1960 and 2009 or the first kid,and he escaped,thats when the beldam learned that she had to make the world more "perfect",he grew old reancarnated and was reborn to keep wybie safe,but at the same time he couldve been bad but playing along to the victim act for the beldam,bcuz coraline trusts him,so he could just be another spy,my second theory is that the other mother disvoveree the world,this also proves the fact that the garden was made in her face,so it was made in her honer,she was a normal person,but discovered the world,and let it take her soul and change her into a weird scociyopath,i know people are saying it could be a dream,but that cant be possible bcuz she feels emotions,pain,and she sees her reflection when the other mother is about to throw her into the mirror.its very rare to see yourself in dreams.on that note,its in third person view,but whos the third person?? we techincally never see the normal other ms.spink and forcible, also mr.bobinsky,so what do they do in the meantime?? It might take time to warp them,bcuz the beldam discovered the world,so as soon as coraline leaves the show,at ms.spink and forceibles house on the third night,the warping starts,so the beldam must have known coraline was planning on leaving.maybe there not copies,just alter egos?? I know the beldam is human,bcuz in the coraline book she says she buried her own mother alive,maybe when she discovered the world,it discombobulated,or took control of the true her,and beldam in another language is "great dane" that means she had some type of royalty or a lot of respect,which further explains that she had the pink place made in her honer,but notice that,the garden is shaped as her evil self,so she must have discovered the well,which made her discover the other world,so she had a house made there so she could still conect to the world,but the world needed power to stay fresh,therfore the beldam,needs the power of youth,i think that refers to how technology is filling peoples minds with so much,and the lesson is not to belive everything you hear,and to always draw the line between reality and vurtual reality,

    • @SushiSammy99
      @SushiSammy99 6 лет назад +22

      This is a good theory, however, her theory says that the Beldame cannot create what has not entered the Beldame's lair, e.g the picture of the Michigan kids. Since there is a Wybie in the other world, it means that he has been to the other world, and therefore, the deal would have been broken. I guess it is still possible, since the Beldame could've just used the father and still lured his kid in against her word. In short, I like your theory, it's fun to play around with!:)

      Yea I thought that the first time I watched the movie too. But if you remember, near the middle of the movie, right after Coraline and her mother go shopping for school clothes, after they drop off the dad to present the Catalog to the I ❤ Mulch store, Coraline's mother says to Caroline in the kitchen "look Coraline if things go well today I promise I'll make it up". To which Coraline replies "that's what you always say", probably knowing she's right, the mother, with a defeated look on her face walks out the door without saying another word. That lets us know this is an empty promise the mother has told Coraline time and time again, but nothing ever really changes in the family each and every single time. So your theory is probably not correct. Probably, these are just my thoughts on it after watching it a second time today.

    Ok so basically what I got from this is that:
    Coraline was in the real world for only one part of the movie.
    Once she went in the door there was no escape for her.
    so, she went into the door, she was basically in the other mothers “HQ”
    Once she went back to the “real world”, it was all apart of the other mothers trap. Everything was created by her. The beldam has powers way beyond what she shows coraline.
    The reason the other mother showed the more crude side of herself is to scare coraline into thinking that the parents in the real world were actually real.
    So, coraline loved these parents, and that made it so the beldam could survive off of the energy.
    I didn’t get everything, and some parts are better said in a lengthier fashion, but that’s the best I could do.
    (The video does a better job explaining, I just wrote this for the lazy people)

    • @justanaverageperson7336
      @justanaverageperson7336 3 года назад +3

      I mean it kinda makes sense as the other mother did reveal herself to Coraline a bit early and thus she cant really take her soul as the only way she can obtain it is through love. So maybe she recreated coraline real parents to give Coraline a sense of false hope, that way the other mother can suck her life energy as Coraline shows love towards her parents

    When Coraline walks into the white, empty space of the Other World, and comes back to the Pink Palace, she asks the cat: “How can you walk away from something and come back to it?” And I feel like that could be a hint to confirm your Pink Palace limbo theory. She thinks she’s out of the Other World, but actually she’s still in there.
    Also when she asks the Beldam for a hint about where she can find her parents, the Beldam just taps her button eyes. This again can be a sign that the Beldam IS her “real” mother, aka that when she thinks she is with her real mother, she is actually with the Beldam.

    You said that nobody notices that bobinski, ms. spink, and ms. forcible, but coralines mother mentions them. Coralines mother was talking to coraline about bobinski and she said that "he's not crazy, he's just drunk". And she mention ms. spink and forcible when coraline was moping around and she told her to go and meet the ladies downstairs, toward the beginning of the movie. You also like to state that the beldam's creations aren't composed of soul sand, but if they're not, what are they made of? The concept of soul sand branched from the theorizer, but he himself stated that the term "soul sand" didn't necessarily mean that the material she used was literal sand, it was just the name he gave it. The beldam is in a void, she HAS to have something to initiate creation. She was once human. In the book, the beldam says that she had a mother, and that she put her mother into a grave and pushed her back in when she attempted to climb out. She can't be a supernatural being if she had a mother. However, I personally believe that she can gain power. When she has a sufficient life source, like when there is a child coming in and out of her world, I think she's a lot more powerful, so she might be able to create a limbo pink palace. But, if she has a safe place to store coraline, why would she terrify her so much and try and stop her from leaving even when she knew that coraline would be trapped anyway? Does fear make souls potent, too? Another thing I'm confused about is when her parents were taken, I think they just went through the door. When coralines mom got home, she realized coraline was gone and saw that she had left the door to the other world open. I assume that coralines parents simply went through the door, trying to find her, I don't really think the beldam stole them, she didn't have to. My main point here was that bobinski and ms. spink and forcible don't live in a parallel universe because coralines mother knew they were there. I also wanted to point out that the other mothers creations undergo magic deterioration. The other wybee turns into sawdust, the other father into a pumpkin, the jumping mice into rats, the other ms. spink and forcible into puppets and so on. They aren't carbon copied because if they were they wouldn't change. That wouldn't make any sense. anyways, thanks for this theory it was really cool! This is my second comment I wanted to watch this again and rewatch the movie and revise my thoughts.

    Awesome but one criticism: if Coraline thinks she is now safe and happy in the real world, how does the Beldam get her love food? Coraline loves her (now fake) parents who are suddenly doing gardening and cooking and stuff, and the Beldam is posing as the mother. But it's still not the Beldam that Coraline loves, it's her image of her parents that she loves. In order to love someone, they have to be the person they claim to be. When your husband suddenly reveals he's been a secret agent all the time, then you could argue that you never truly loved him, you loved someone else that didn't really exist. It's a cliche that you love someone for who they are, their own quirks and your personal relationship with them -- you can't pretend to be someone else and get true love.

    • @elleinchrist
      @elleinchrist 2 года назад +11

      I’ll m thinking maybe it’s more the act of love she feeds on. If she can produce any kind of love (just like producing that egotistical energy by the neighbors performing in those shows) she can feed off it, even if it’s not super strong. But she can at least keep surviving. So she tricks her so that love keeps being produced..and when coralline is older and that runs out..she’ll just find another child to trick.

    i think the reason why coraline's parents get along with her at the end because their garden catalog went successful. In that case, they'd now have extra time for their child.

      Would make sense! The Other World is Hell, the Good World at the end of the movie is Heaven, and inbetween was Purgatory. The Beldam would basically be Satan because it's often hinted that the Devil will give you things you like and make deals with you to get you on his side. He also likes to play games and doesn't play fair, just like the Other Mother.

    Hello Fangirl,
    after some years i watched coraline again several times and also some of your videos and i have some points and still some questions: (But i was really impressed from your theories)
    First, the old well is definitely a portal and it ends somewhere near the window of the other mother. in the beginning we see that the old puppet comes down to her and she changed it into a mini caroline puppet and giving it back to the portal. We see the star sky in this scene so it has to be the portal which leads to the old well because whybe said that if you are on the ground even if it is day you see a star sky. He is the only one who knows of this well and also the star sky we know of. And that was in the first real world.
    There pops up the question who gave the other mother the puppet from the beginning scene? someone has to throw it in the well so that she can have it. who was that? whybe, the cat or his grandma?
    Then i recognized that the first time the mise come out of the door portal you can clearly see a vortex, a cloud spiral out the window when coraline goes by. that is something that can not be in the real world even if she is. maybe because the portal is open and so she is in a kind of in an intermediate world? she wakes up, see the mise and everything feels odd from there on.
    Also something is wrong with whybe. who would name his kid whyborn? he mentioned that it is kind of a punishment to caroline. And he is always afraid when his "grandma" is calling him. Maybe it is not his grandma. Maybe is is in contact with the other mother and throw the puppet in the well.
    Then i was wondering why the ghost kids call the other mother old and fat. old and fat? she never looked to me that old but she is supernatural so maybe because of this but she is not fat. she is thin, very thin. So who the kids are talking from? because coraline asks the kids: "do you mean the other mother" ? And they don't answer. they don't answer that question. the only one who fits into that profile is one of the old neighbors. And there is also this scene when coraline went to them and the old lady opens the door. she looks very evil also in the beginning on the steps looking at coraline. the other lady is near to blind you can see it in hear very blue eyes and she also give always the worng answers.
    there seeems to be more to the old fat lady. she can read the future right, with the crawl and she gave her the triangle thing.
    Also the knob people have there own will. they are more like slaves. Because there is this scene where whybe looks said and after that the other mother makes whybe a smile with the hooks. if she had full control she hadn't have to do it. In this scene where she gestured to knobwhybe he should smile coraline was in the house and couldn't see it. So i reallly think these knob people aren't full controllable puppets but more slaves and can act on their own. But if they do that in the movie i can't say. Even the knobfather said he don't want to hurt coraline and is forced by the machine. But that could be an act.
    Also the symbol on the dishes is something to look for also the symbol on the chair. i see that before maybe in satanism or somewhere else.
    the problem with the seasons is really something that proofs on its own that coraline is not in the real world. she is willing to explore this other world every day. if she would have been away for longer times the parents would have asked her where she was and would have been worried. Maybe time is odd in the other world. but she has to be in the other world because only there the strange seasons make any sense at all.
    there is also a very strange scene with the blue neighbor. where he jumps of the balcony and landed with his long legs over coraline and she puts this garden scissor directly to his genitals to protect her. I have always thought that this whole scene is very strange. I also asked myself why he is blue? I really want to go to far but this spiral vortex symbol in the movie is related to a child abuse conspiracy theory. I just mentioned that because the first time coraline sleeps and she wakes up to go into the portal we see this spirals out of the window. And there she is still in the real world and i couldn't make sense of it. And i find that landing scene always very disturbing. that doesn't fit in like a joke or something. Also he is the one charakter in the other world which is made of rats. So he gets a special treatment in the movie. i can't help that there is more to him.
    then we have the key. coraline has a "dream" where the ghost kids tell her that she is in danger and she has to get rid of the key. you recognized that. if she is in the real world. she would gave the other mother the key back by putting it in the well. if she is not and the kids are made by the other mother maybe the well is also a portal to the other mother. I can't imagine that the other mother has only one way to this second layer. so maybe she won completely and get the key back no matter which theory you are on.
    one of the biggest problem for me is the cat. what is the cat and where does it come from. is it a friend or a foe. when coraline tries to get rid of the key the cat tries to stop her. Maybe the cat has its own plans. If coraline is still in the other world the cat could speak to hear. But the cat didn't do that. Also we can see that the cat use a tree as a portal and in the ending scene we see that again. that is also a strong hint that this is not real. we never see the cat go in a portal in the first real world. But maybe the cat can do it though.
    I also don't understand, when caroline at the end goes to bed with the eyes under her pillow, who cracks the eyes when she sleeps?
    But she herself said something like : ok lets go. lets free them now. maybe i missed something. And i really had the feeling that the ghost kids behave very manipulative and deceptive.
    Final words:
    All in all it seems that every character in this story has their very own motives and plans. It really seems to me that every character knows something and is involved in one or another way besides coraline herself.
    honorable mentions:
    i find it a bit strange that the mother of coraline finds the key immediately. And i wonder why there are so many keys? Ok it is the only key which is special and it has the knob but it seems in this scene she knows exactly what she is searching for. but maybe that is nothing.
    i also find the appartment number very huge. i know thats how it is in the states but there seems to be nothing around.
    why is the beldams face made of fractals till the end? to show coraline that she is damaged?
    what does hungry like a pumpkin mean? do you say this phrase in the states?
    pumkin is also often refered to a child.
    tulips. red tulips.
    there was tulip mania in the neatherlands.
    tulip mania
    there was a time where everyone wants to have tulips and payed ridiculous prices for them.

    Wait, a lot of this doesn't make sense.
    1) If the tunnel moves between the real world and the "limbo world", then how does sleeping get her to the limbo world? There's no visual evidence to suggest that a limbo world exists at all, aside from that single scene you cited. A much simpler explanation is that the Beldam simply didn't allow Coraline to return in her sleep as she previously did.
    2) You mention that no one seems to interact with the other neighbors because they're trapped in another universe, but Wybie is on the other side, and we see him before Coraline enters the other world. And we know Coraline is not the only one to see him either because Coraline's real mother even mentions how some kid left the doll for Coraline.
    3) Coraline mentions the gloves at the dinner table where the doll is present. That's how the Beldam knew.
    4) You simultaneously say it's clear the Beldam has limitations on her powers, but then you go on to say that all these perceived limitations are just that, perceived. So which is it?
    5) The issue of why the Beldam ceases to bang on the door. The way she was banging on the door was because her singular hand, after being removed from the rest of her, was banging until it made it into the real world. There's nothing left to bang on the door in the passage way once the hand makes it into the real world, that's why it stopped. Furthermore, the Beldam doesn't have power in the other world, as we know because she is forced to watch the children through the eyes of the dolls. With no power, there's nothing to suggest her hand would be able to reconstruct, and even so, her power is not superhuman, she couldn't even fight off a cat. Her hand wouldn't be able to leave the well.
    6) It seems really really farfetched that the Beldam would make a whole new limbo world when, if her power is so great, she can just create the limbo world in her "other world" from the get-go. Saves a lot of time and effort.
    7) There's nothing to suggest she can simply morph on new eyes, but rather she can give them the appearance of being regular eyes. Notice she can't have normal eyes when in her true form.

      Elizabeth Chen let's start:
      1.The fangirl suggests that there is no evidence to prove that when Coreline sleeps, she gets back to the real world, like there is the real world, the other world and the limbo, and when she woke up after the first night, she got into the limbo and not the real world.
      2.Wybie is not a neighbor, tha fangirl by neighbors means the two ladies and mr Bobinsky, she never stated that Wybie is not real, but the neighbors are not present, like no one seems to think it's wierd that mr Bobinsky is jumping from the top of the palace etc.
      3.I can't find anywhere the scene that you are talking about, after the shopping, Coreline and her mom go home, and the mom realizes that they don't have any food, so she goes to shop, there Coraline mentions the glowes but the doll is nowhere to be found. And even if the doll was there, don't you think it's a bit fast? Life after that Coraline straight goes to the other world.
      4.The Beldam presents her powers when you first, like she has limitations, like her look changing, when Coreline searches for the ghost eyes, it suggests that the other world is falling apart. This theory is about that, that the Beldam pretends to have this issues with her power, so Coraline will underestimate her.
      5.I think you didn't really understand this. When the hand holds a bit the keys, the door is also pounding again, clearly if you don't believe this theory, you can still see that the Beldam is still there. And don't you think that her hand surviving in the real world suggest that that is not the real world? If it would have been that simple don't you think she would make her hand go to the real world all the time? And the Fangirl doesn't say that the hand will rebuild itself, but that the well is connected to the other world, and by throwing the key in the well, Coreline gives the key back, and locks herself in the limbo.
      6.The children who go to this world are unsutisfied with their life, the Beldam shows them a world, where they get what they want, but scares them, so they think they run back to the real world with their real parents, and they love their mom much more, after that traumatizing experience, so if the Beldam poses as their mothers she gets the love and so the magic
      7.Yeah, and also there is nothing to suggest, that she can't have real eyes, when she already made once. When she tricked Coraline into thinking that she is her real mom, she just keep up the apparance untill Coraline was there, and after that she changed to her normal self.
      side note: before you comment anything this long, at least watch and think again the things that you are talking about, because if not, you seem ignorant and stupid of something that you can google easily. Second, if you don't belive this theory, it's fine, you can believe what you want, and you can just say that the evidences here are just plotholes and mistaces. The only argument I can think about, related to the mistaces, is that the creators went that far, to even make real things from Oregon, that are not even related to the plot, so you would think that they woud not make a mistace like the seasons, or the Beldam's face in the backyard

    • @thesleepydot
      @thesleepydot 5 лет назад +14

      Elizabeth Chen Although I agree with almost all of your points, I believe making a limbo pink palace world from the get-go would make going home way to easy, reason to which she has two worlds: one which is terrifying to keep Coraline away from the real world, like a barrier to the real world, and the limbo pink palace, where she can be trapped and Coraline's love can be "cultivated".
      Also, the "having limited powers" was obvious in the sense that the beldam intentionally made Coraline think that, when she actually is much stronger. It was also to make a clear distinction compared to the real world in Coraline's mind.
      Hope this makes sense. :))

    My cat theory based on what you presented here:
    Mrs. Lovat's 20 something year old son goes through the portal and into the other world. He's now trapped. He's too old and rational to provide any magic to the other world so the Beldam decides to kill him. Remembering stories of the Beldam told to him by his mother (Mrs. Lovat) he challenges the Beldam to a game. If he wins he gets his freedom. If not, he has to serve the Beldam as a cat for the rest of his life, helping lure in children. If he ever goes back on his bargain, the Beldam will silence/kill him and lure in Wybie. His only motive for helping the Beldam, is his love for his only son Wybie.
    BONUS: Wybie's mom died giving birth to him. His dad (the cat) named him Wyborne because he was in anger and grief over losing his wife. Wybie knows the origin of his name and is slightly ashamed of it.
    This also explains why BOTH parents are gone and he's living with his grandma.

      im gonna guess
      you started to wonder if every single tight corridor youve walked through has made you warp into another world so you think that your parents and all the people around you are just illusions made by a sky mommy?

    With the clothing thing, you can see a woman outside the window staring at Coraline and her mother. She's there for the entire scene. And Coralines mom said "Well why doesn't your other mother buy all your clothes." Then the next time Coraline goes to the other world, her other mother had made her a new outfit. I don't think that's a coincidence.

    Theory: The belldam is the same speashes as Mary Poppins and Penniwise both creactures feed of an emotion of children. Mary poppins of happiness and imagination, Penniwise of fear. The belldam is similar to Mary poppins feeding off of the children’s happiness and love of their parents. That’s my theory.

    I think Coraline's parents were out looking for her, not taken by the Beldam. That's why the food was rotten because they dropped everything to go find her. Then the Beldam tricks Coraline with the mirror so she'll try to "save" her parents. Then she traps her in her realm forever. The cat literally said Coraline was walking into the Beldam's trap.

    Just rewatched Coraline. I don't know if you've already talked about this but at the end of the movie it shows the cat sitting on the sign to the Pink Palace and he walks behind it and disappears which he seems to only be able to do in the other world and after he does that creepy music starts to play and the credits come up meaning that Coraline is probably stuck in then other world

      @amallia8213 5 лет назад +15

      EllzGamez 75 But the cat could always travel, he could be going there again because he knows the other mother is dead. I don’t think he’d be to happy to see the other mother or be in her world again.

      EllzGamez 75 she said that the people trapped in the pink palace are there because of their egos Coraline said she doesn’t like dolls but That’s it out of her meaning that the bell damn praise off of peoples egos also maybe she only made dolls for the girls and the child in between Caroline and her sister was a boy

    This theory is so sad but at the same time understandable I always questioned when wybie first introduced the cat he said “he’s a stray cat *he found us* “ part, not the other way around. And I also always questioned at the end of the movie, where did the cat disappear to? you never see the cat enter the portal he just shows up there. And at the end of the movie he walks behind the sign of the pink palace and disappears. I also believe the beldam actually let the other spirits go because she has no reason to feed off them anymore sense they’re already dead. But what raised my suspicion the most is how the garden makes coralines face when (she knowingly knows) she’s in the other world but at the end of the movie the garden forms the beldams face smiling even with flowers implanted in the garden and no one raises suspicion to it. (Maybe it’s because the beldams still in control) The Coraline movie is based off manipulation and trickery to the mind, black cats represent companions and I’m not completely sure what water rods represent I’ll have to look it up. But I find it a bit odd how black cats represent companions when the cat led Coraline back into the tunnel. My other theory is that maybe this is all overthinking it because I’m the Coraline book she isn’t sent to sleep and woken up back in the regular world, she walks through the tunnel back to the regular world.

    Something I’ve noticed is that Wybie, in the beginning of the movie, says it’s supposed that the well is so deep, if you went to the bottom and looked up, you’d see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day. This could help support the idea that the well is in fact a portal to the other world because in the beginning of the movie, the doll of Mrs. Lovat’s sister floats into the window of that unknown room. In that shot, the sky is dark and full of stars. I don’t know if this is supposed to symbolize the bottom of the well, it’s just something I’ve noticed. Does anyone else think this could mean anything?

      Yup! Also, coraline goes through the door during daytime, yet when she's in the other world, it's dark with stars! It's always dark with stars in the other world no matter what time it is in the real world.😊

    OOOOO I HAVE A THEORY!
    Mr bobisnkys (sorry if I spelt it wrong) medal is one that was given to people who helped in the Cold War in Russia. Sooo there is this circling theory about the other residents of pink palace being dead- what if mr bobinsky died of radiation poisoning after he was awarded the medal?! It would also explain his blue skin right?!
    Edit: three years later, but more likely it’s from the Chernobyl nuclear clean up. Naturally radiation doesn’t turn your skin blue but that could just be artistic representation?

      The medal Mr Bobinsky's wears on his chest is an actual real life one that was given out to people that helped with the Chernobyl nuclear cleanup by the USSR. The medal has a drop of blood drawn in the middle, with three lines that represent the Alpha, Beta and Gamma types of radiation. With that in mind, it's easy to think that Mr. Bobinsky's skintone would be caused by radiation, but it's explained by Henry Selick that Mr Bobinsky's skintone is due to him being outside all the time underdressed which made the cold turn his skin blue. Hope that helped ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @alkeic6105
      @alkeic6105 3 года назад +4

      But ghosts ARE the souls of the deceased so if what your saying is true that means that the ghost children are indeed puppets for the beldam and she was watching her through their button eyes, that could explain how whybe knew when to take her back

    • @burnt4ppl306
      @burnt4ppl306 3 года назад

      Well the ghosts don’t actually have souls, if the theory that they are carbon copies is correct, so she DID feed on magic from them before she killed them. Once they died, she created the carbon copies that were shown in the movie. I’m relying on the theories in this video by the way, so I could be completely wrong, but that’s just what I think.

  • @user-ju5rt6ph1o
    @user-ju5rt6ph1o 3 года назад +7

    The button eyes are only needed if she wants to feed on the life force (not pure magic.) She can keep people with human eyes as prisoners and not be able to eat their life force. So she actually could of kept the parents prisoner without button eyes. In fact, even after Coralie was locked in the dungeon, the Beldam still insisted upon the button ehes.
