12 minutes and 47 seconds of delicious polymeters and mid-life crisis. Edit: Caligula was a Roman Emperor infamous for his unusual cruelty and self-indulgence. Edit 1: That was a bass solo, brotherman. Justin Chancellor channeling a little bit of Cliff Burton. Edit 2: Ponce de Leon searched for the fountain of youth. Edit 2b: The verse is basically saying the warrior is driven by this noble pursuit, whether you want to take it as a literal pursuit of the fountain of youth, or a metaphor for the sort of immortality or eternal glory that people pursue despite their own limited mortality. "False hopes, perhaps but the truth never got in my way, before now" is basically the admission that he's known all along that there is no fountain of youth, that a warrior's deeds are temporary, but that's never stopped him from leaping into battle anyway. The ultimate realization "feel the sting, feeling time bearing down" is that he's not invincible, that time fells all foes with unyielding consistency, and that he too is finally confronting an enemy that he knows he cannot defeat.

@@brandonglassock148 that would be cool, i really dont know about him. i looked it up because of this song and that was what i got out of it lol. thanks
The song is simply about Maynard feeling the pressure of releasing a new tool record for 13 years. Since they basically have been batting 100, and saying that it was the most anticipated album of this century so far, they had huge pressure to produce a masterpiece (which they surely did)... and the song is just likening himself to an aging warrior feeling his age, and feeling trepidation for the first time. And for the first time feeling time bearing down on him. One of the most straightforward songs tool has, really.
Ponce de Leon was a Spanish explorer/conquistador in the 1500s who searched what would later be known as Florida for a "mythical fountain of youth". It was said that if you drank from the water, you would never die. "False hope perhaps, but the truth never got in my way before now" means that he knows there's no such thing as trying to get younger again, but he doesn't care, he's going to delude himself to the point of being able to taste the fountain of youth so that he can remain consequential. Caligula (literally "Little Boots" in Latin) was a Roman emperor known for his extreme cruelty and depravity. When Maynard says that line, he's implying that they once got up to activities that Caligula would "grin" at, i.e., he'd approve. It's a little sly joke about the "over the top" lifestyle rock stars are supposed to lead, but at the same time, a call out to a shared past: "tripping through remember when" if that doesn't perfectly describe a group of old friends talking about the old days, I don't know what does. Maynard is singing about getting old and trying to stay relevant. "Beating tired bones" means that as you get older, just getting up and going to work (whatever kind it may be) is more and more painful. When you're young, you feel invincible, but as you age, you know better. It's a song you'll really start to feel once you hit your forties and fifties, young man. Cheers for doing a great job on these reactions. I've subbed to support your Tool journey. Stay safe and have fun.

Only after 40 will this song be relevant to the younger generations. When you're younger you feel INVINCIBLE. Time will prove you wrong...however the will to remain a warrior is timeless. Experience will take over youthful exuberance
Instrumental Bridge - "I'm still waiting for something to happen". Tool is all about vocalist And the other band together as a total experience. I sincerely hope that you get to a place where you enjoy and appreciate the instrumentals somewhere close. The song is about aging. We all lose what we used to have no matter what you were. No matter if you were at the top.
So imo the song is about time and the toll it takes. When we are young we feel “invincible” and eager to take on the world. We beat our chests. We are eager to conquer and do battle, metaphorically speaking. We lurch into the fray. Sometimes we make it to top, and from the perspective of tool, they were once one of the most relevant bands around, and perhaps they felt that they mattered, or were consequential, in the scheme of things. But as we get older time takes its toll. The shield gets heavier from years of “battle.” We start struggling to stay relevant. Time takes its toll. *Caligula was a Roman emperor who did a lot of crazy shit. The reference was probably about the crazy shit the singer has done in his life, which would make Caligula grin, which would be a show of respect for doing so much. *Ponce de Leon was the Spanish Explorer who was searching for the Fountain of Youth(mythical fountains)among other things, which were all considered his “phantoms” because they haunted him and drive him to look for them when in reality they didn’t exist. So the singers saying false hope perhaps but the truth never got in his way before now. Which is a reference to his own denial to accept getting old and chasing things that don’t exist or don’t really matter, like wealth and social status, etc. But in the end he feels the sting of time bearing downs. This songs about getting older. The "truth" being, we all grow old and become lesser, in a physical sense. You young cats don't know that 'truth' yet. ;) Ponce De Leon went on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth.
This is my favorite song at the moment from them . They change so often with me . Any thoughts on how you hear this song now and how it makes you feel ? Thanks for the react Wack

My advice is don't get caught up in the lyrics on a first listen. Take it all in understanding the whole song and all four instruments. Come back after that and dig into the lyrics. The band and Maynard himself would prefer it that way. They've said as much.
You could even go through the song twice. Tool fans would love it. I've not seen reactions where you take in the song as a while first time around then break it open with the lyrics and the bits you enjoyed. Who knows might catch on!
If your looking for warrior songs, check out Iron Maiden "The trooper", "aces high", Metallica "Disposable Heros", "for whom the bell tolls" they deal with war. Also anything from the band Sabaton, all of their music is based on historical war.
Probably already been said but the lyrics are slightly wrong its not "Ponce de Leon's phantoms" its "Ponce de Leon's fountain false". He wrote about the fountain of youth and this song is about the bands past memories of when they where young and felt invincible, now they worry they are just struggling to remain relevant. They never need to worry about that! Ha ha
Warrior song suggestions from Tool- "The Grudge" "Ænama" "Stinkfist" Tool songs to make you question your place in the universe- "Wings for Marie pt.2" "Parabol" and "Parabola" (listen in sequence) "Lateralus" Much love man. I appreciate your videos. Thanks for being you

Caligula was so desperate to have a son to take over, he forced both his sisters to have sex with him, still unsuccessfully......Or so it is said. He felt father time knocking on the door, which lead to desperation. There are also theories those were just rumours spread by his enemies....history is, so it’s said, really up to whomever is writing it. Thats one of the reasons religion still has such a stranglehold on todays society. 2000 yrs ago you would not dare question what was popular at the time....and so it has carried on through the ages. Crazy dayz mang.
Btw as far as I can tell Maynard's singing about himself, he's a warrior who's won many battles ie. Being in mf tool. Caligula was some warrior dude so that's why he's grinning and Ponce de Lyon found the fountain of youth, so he's saying he's trying to become immortal through his music but he doesn't know if he's invincible like he used to be back in the day, or you could say its about anyone who used to be important and are slowly outgrowing who they were. P.s If you like solo's, 7empest is basically just a 15 minute guitar solo, not the best tool song but it does what it has to do
Caligula wasn't "some warrior dude" my guy, he was a Roman emperor who came to embody basically all the worst traits you could imagine in a human being. He's basically saying "Caligula would grin" at all the insane fucked up shit he's done during his lifetime as a warrior.
@@ABCDEFR aight but is the cruelty what's relevant, what has Maynard done that's fucked up or cruel, he's suffered from fucked up cruel stuff but thats not what the songs addressing, I feel that gaining power and winning battles is what he would grin at so I just bro-splained with warrior dude
Awesome stuff bud! Love your vids. Appreciate your effort with the lyrics. You're gonna love Descending from them off the same album. Guitar solos big time. I look forward to the next one. Cheers!

Awesome reaction bro!! Love the moments of sheer joy and thrill!!! Wack Warriors and Tool Army are gonna make one strong force 💪 and that solo, that was the bass player. This song is about the band growing old. Its off their latest album that came out recently after 13 years between albums. They are almost all 60 years old. Anyhow ponce de leon was the fountain of youth dude. Thatll help it kake more sense now im sure. Cant wait till the next one. May i suggest The Grudge 🤘🤘🔥🔥
:-: Well I full on welcome the Tool Army..They are absolutely amazing given the age.. Thanks for the info and input.. it sure the heck does help make more sense.
Don't make the mistake some others are by getting to Lateralus too soon (the album, but especially Lateralus the song)! It's their crowning achievement in many a Fan's eyes. I'm just going to put it out there that Lateralus may be the best song ever written, but, at the very least, I think you will appreciate it so much more if you save it for a later time. I don't know if it needs to be like the very last song and album you do. It's just so fucking beautiful...the better you know the band, the more it will pay off.
@@TheBlackswanwhite please don't...I fully appreciate that people have different favorites, but telling me yours as if it's objective fact is a waste of both our time. ✌️
Where you said "That's a guitar solo, well not really a guitar solo", dude, that's the bass player doing a bass solo. And Ponce De Leone supposedly found the foundain of youth in France I think back in the day. Fountain. Not foundain
@@iammrwack Oh, dude, it was me that totally misspelled fountain in my first post. Also I specified it was a bass solo because of the 'bass players are (insert joke here) and my best friend didn't know that until we went and saw Tool in Houston last October. I apologize for the misunderstandings man.
It's a song about the band getting old and wondering if they still have any relevance in today's music. Tripping through remember when... Proud of where they've been, but here they are again, about to go on stage, wondering if their crowd still cares. Caligula was a Roman emperor, very militaristic and cruel. He would grin about their exploits as a band. But still, they're old and tired, trying to find thr mythical fountain of youth and regain their glory days. This album was released 13 years after their last one. It's a hail Mary, hoping they're still good enough. They are. But they're also almost 60 years old.
You should react to cannon he has great music my favorites by him are water glass and Stan smiths. I suggested haunt me so I don’t give bad suggestions😌✨
Ok yeah. I remember you now?? Tbh I too got the impression you weren't feeling their music!? I may hv even commenting that "WE".....meaning the fans, or "the Army" (I find that moniker kinda stupid idk?) Which TOOL fans R NOT! But I'm not sure where this ......O shit!! Of course! I AM STUPID lol.. The ARMY> Warrior! Damn I need to sleep! I was gonna ask why the guy felt compelled to suggest THIS song? It's a great song of course! But they have SO many other songs that I just thought some other ones might be suggested for newbies. But, I AM happy to see yr feeling the song. I'm gonna follow yr progress to see if you start feeling the need to just close yr eyes n let the music take u there. Cuz thats what their music is INTENDED to do. That's even where they got their name! Conceptually for the band to be "the TOOL" to take you where you never knew existed! And how badly in life you need to go back "there!" THEN, yr whole paradigm shifts! Your taste in music has completly changed. Your I.Q goes up. U start sipping wine! No, just kidding with the wine part lol. But hey....thats cool too! My point is, yul nvr have a better time using your brain. I promise. Enjoy the ride of yr life

:-: 😂😂😂😂😂 Yeah and I Loved Every Second of It.
This songs about getting older. The "truth" being, we all grow old and become lesser, in a physical sense. You young cats don't know that 'truth' yet. ;)
Ponce De Leon went on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth.
There are actually 2 solos in the song... Adam on guitar first, then later in the song Justin on bass.🎸
:-: Well that Bass Solo snatched my Heart lmbo..
Totally love your reaction. Caligula was a Roman emperor that was known as one of the cruelest of his time .
:-: Well dang..
Cruel, but also very very hedonistic. Known for his feasts and insane celebrations, which I think is what they were referencing in the song.
This is my favorite song at the moment from them . They change so often with me . Any thoughts on how you hear this song now and how it makes you feel ? Thanks for the react Wack
:-: Lol I feel less invincible however more determined to not fold or fall..
Damn do I love Tool. Do I miss "angry tool"? A little bit but this is greatness. This whole album is a masterpiece.
My warrior brother I highly recommend "Lost Keys+Rosetta Stoned" by Tool that's my favorite one and I'd love to see your face when Rosetta stoned kicks in (but with lyrics please) it's a 2 parter
Love how one can lose their sense of time listening to TooL...Imo their songs are never long enough ⏳🤘🎧💜

Youth of The Nation by P.O.D ... a heavy/dark song that's still relevant to this day.

Ponce de Leon. Look him up, you'll understand the lyrics.
If you are liking Tool and wanna here great solos listen Lateralus and Descending 👍✌️

Caligula was a Roman emperor that was known for a sadistic reign

Believe it or not that solo you liked so much is a Bass solo.

See how you feel when you're 60 that's the perspective of the song 🤔🤠💯

@@iammrwack true but the struggle is real no matter what age you are... Struggle makes us stronger 💪🏻
Caligula was a bad ass in the roman days.
:-: I'll have to look that name up.
if you love solos then do Tool - 7empist. duuuude!!!
My advice is don't get caught up in the lyrics on a first listen. Take it all in understanding the whole song and all four instruments. Come back after that and dig into the lyrics. The band and Maynard himself would prefer it that way. They've said as much.
:-: Gooooott you.. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 Thank you for the advice.. I'll keep that in mind..
You could even go through the song twice. Tool fans would love it. I've not seen reactions where you take in the song as a while first time around then break it open with the lyrics and the bits you enjoyed. Who knows might catch on!
The solo you are referring to at 13.30 or so is actually the bass guitar! Sorry if someone already said that
:-: yes someone said that.. I also knew it was a bass guitar when I heard it to.. Still absolutely beautiful..

If your looking for warrior songs, check out Iron Maiden "The trooper", "aces high", Metallica "Disposable Heros", "for whom the bell tolls" they deal with war. Also anything from the band Sabaton, all of their music is based on historical war.
He's chasing the fountain of youth found by Ponce de Leon
It's about getting old... Nothing more
Poncedeleon searched for the fountain of youth.
Ponce de leon was a Spanish explorer searching for the fountain of youth.
:-: Thank you.. Much Love and Respect..
Ha ha
:-: For sure they don't have to worry about that and I don't believe anybody said the lyrics was slightly wrong.
Warrior song suggestions from Tool-
"The Grudge"
"Ænama"
"Stinkfist"
Tool songs to make you question your place in the universe-
"Wings for Marie pt.2"
"Parabol" and "Parabola" (listen in sequence)
"Lateralus"

Warrior list song without ticks? One is not amused 😋
:-: Interesting..
Leonidas or Alexander or would also work but they ain't got that Caligula drawl
Awesome stuff bud! Love your vids. Appreciate your effort with the lyrics. You're gonna love Descending from them off the same album. Guitar solos big time. I look forward to the next one. Cheers!

Tool was my first love of music, Danny and Maynard are GOATs. Now I mostly listen to hip-hop like Eyedea, Aesop Rock, and Tech N9ne. That's why I play classical guitar, because I'm a dumb ass, a well versed dumb ass.

:-: Got you... We won't jump to that one then... Lol I Love having stuff to save and Listen to..
Agreed. Lateralus may be one of, if not the greatest rock song ever written and performed. Pretty well flawless in all aspects of production.

And how badly in life you need to go back "there!" This is one of their worst songs. Still not that bad ofcourse. I'm a huge Tool fan, but the new album is definitely their worst. The fact that you started here will really make it fun to see you react to the creme de la creme in the future
