Matt! It was good to see this film again. Like an old friend who went on a diet, got some exercise, gave up the bad habits and found themselves in-sync and awake with a whole new outlook.
the one thing I didn't like about Get Back was the chopping up of the recording sequence toward the end. It's great to have the three songs intact here again.
Let It Be had been intended for TV so was shot in the 4:3 ‘Academy’ ratio. 16mm film was used too which meant when it was ‘blown up’ to 35mm for cinema release there was increased grain and general ‘fuzziness’ etc. Peter Jackson’s technology improved all the original footage. In Get Back he was criticised for using DNR which intensified the sharpness but at the cost of making faces ‘waxy’ etc. He therefore didn’t use the DNR for this release in deference to MLH’s original vision.
I think Let It Be needs to be thought of almost in terms of it being a Beatles movie in the same league as Hard Days Night, Help, YS, and MMT. And it does have a huge historical place in Beatles history. The full videos of the 3 songs are great.
One thing the "Let It Be" film that "Get Back doesn't have are complete performances of songs like "For You Blue," "Two of Us," "Let It Be," "The Long and Winding Road," and more of "Dig It." Also, the fact that the footage that Peter Jackson used was almost completely non-"Let It Be" footage (alternate camera angles, etc.), so what we see in the 1970 film is mostly unique footage. The 1970 film and the 2021 mini-series complement each other.
The film was shot on 16mm film, which has 4:3 aspect ratio. This is what was shown in theaters. To make the image wide-screen would require cutting off the top and bottom Of the picture.
Of course all of us that have seen in the past and those that missed it. We have begged for over a half century for its release and finally got our wish. So I’m thankful for that. In regards to introducing future generations, like my grandkids 10 and 4 at the time. I took them to see the rooftop concert in IMAX on its anniversary. I was a bit embarrassed at the cursing that played in the closing credits. I would have to watch the Get Back version again, but I think the Let it Be version had no cursing and definitely less smoking. I think the Let it Be version of course is shorter in length would’ve been a better choice to introduce my two grandsons to. But still seeing it in IMAX here in Memphis, Tennessee was very special. They gave us a lanyard with the photo from the backside of the group and also a poster to commemorate the event. That was so unexpected. Being the Beatles fan I am I still want it all.

Yeah I can see why MLH and purists would want the 4:3 aspect ratio and “grainy” look. But I think that will be a slight turnoff for newbies and younger fans. I have no problem with it. Hopefully an extended Blu-ray with original grainy and a pristine cut? Doubtful, but we shall see. Cheers😎👍
Enjoyed your review! I was 13 in 1963 when I got the Meet the Beatles album for Christmas. A lifelong fan, I saw them in Toronto in 1965 and '66 at Maple Leaf Gardens. I saw Let it Be in June of 1970 and found it dark and kind of depressing because the group had just broken up. As an historical document, it's worth seeing for those interested. For me, include me out.
I just saw the new Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense" 2023 restoration. And I felt the same way you feel about the new Beatles' "Let It Be" 2024 restoration. It doesn't "pop" as much as I was hoping. But, it's still very good. "Stop Making Sense" also retains that older "film" look. Maybe that's more appropriate for those older films. The big new addition with "Let It Be", is the three full song performances from Jan. 31st.
I just finished watching Let It Be on Disney+ tonight. I really enjoyed it, and found it not as sad and depressing as I felt it was back in 1970. Probably felt that way back then because the Beatles breaking up was so fresh and upsetting. I remember my Dad taking me to the movies and I stayed for several showings of Let It Be that day.
it's better quality, and I liked that it is now available as originally released. I hope to add it to my collection if they release a physical edition. It is History and I like it.
Great review and yes the restoration is a bit grainer but the original director didn't want it cleaned up as much as Peter Jackson's version. I enjoyed watching it but of course Get Back is way better.
I watched the first 10 or 15 minutes. Looks much better than the 'boot' DVD I had. I'll eventually watch the full thing all the way through. It is fascinating but I think I prefer Get Back more.
Great review as for 4.3 just hit zoom on your tv to blow it up some. Ill wait for the blu ray version the way Disney needs cash you can expect it by Christmas time im sure.
Let It be brings back great memories for me. Seeing it the theatre. Seeing it through the seventies with my friends at my college student union. Seeing it with them at midnight showings. We always looked forward to these showings. We never thought of it as a negative movie. The film release looking like a film rather than a waxy digital copy is great.
Hey Matt thanks for the review. Like I told Joe Mayo, I have no idea why the Get Back reprise was removed from the end credits. Makes no sense. I will celebrate more when this comes out on Blu-Ray/4K.
Excellent review, Matt. It's like one needs to have seen "Let It Be" first. It's probably gonna get a little roasted again by the "casual fans" (aka younger viewers) who don't know the history of the project. Almost like - you watch "Let It Be" and then a banner comes spinning across the screen (a la Monty Python) saying "And now for something completely better..." And then "Get Back" comes on. Like a lot of comments on here, I agree - they need to release an unedited, complete rooftop performance without the cutaways to the people in the street. Maybe this could be bonus footage on the physical release. But it probably won't be because that's the only part of the disc most people would watch....LOL. Anyway - good to hear your thoughts. Don't get rid of your original copies - the audio is tampered with, with pluses and minuses all over the place, switch from Twickenham to Apple is not exactly the same. Some fans complain that the wording and all on opening credits is different, but on bootlegs it's been noticed that even on theatrical prints there was two or three variations on opening credits.Oh and picture quality is plus and minus all over the place compared to others in circulation, so yeah, it's good, but it doesnt fully replace anything out there among collectors.

@@matthewstreet1961 Biggest ones are the studio reverb on the vocals and distortion added to the guitars on the rooftop concerts, and we all know there are better rooftop mixes out there than that. I've Got A Feeling even changes in amount of reverb for the second half of the song with none at all, but it's back for the next song, LOL. A few seconds of Paul laughing before 'mugshots' at Twick, not on the original version....Transition between Twick and Apple footage is different....I mean, it is nice, but it makes nothing obsolete because it's different.

So I propose AI voices of all the Beatles releasing a new single called 'Don't Bring Matt Down'. Iy will be on an album with other greats including 'Let Matt Be.' I Matt Mine, Mattie Mae. For You Matt and the ultimate Get Back With Matt. What a album that would be. I would call the release Nothing Really MATTers. Totally hear ya Matt....but who has the time to sit and watch Get Back all the time. This will fill the gap sometimes. What I'd like to see is the 90 minute Get Back version he used at the Premieres for all the "stars" to watch.
I think another big difference is that Get Back is in chronological order. You get to see songs develop. Let it Be is quick 50 minutes and 10 minutes of 3 videos and 30 minute concert. If I am going to watch rooftop concert I will watch Let it be over Get Back.
Matt I agree with you on some of the grainny footage. Overall? It looks a lot better. I have like you to remember that original Let it be film looked a lot worse. Michael? Remember is an American? So trying to make a coherent film must have been a challenge. I like the film over all? Takes us back in time. So like you I am happy to have it available. Kind of makes you wonder what music the Beatles could have continued to make if that whole problem with Klien wouldn't have happened. I am pretty sure? They would have made solo work and eventually reunited? I really believe that.
I think it's quite appropriate that the picture is presented in 4:3, because now that Get Back exists, Let It Be feels like not seeing the full picture, in all senses. It feels like getting a small fragment of the story that we all know now. As I said previously, for completists it's great, but for me Get Back will always best it for telling the story of the project adequately.
I kind of get what ur saying but since you've seen it many times before, I don't know what you were expecting? You knew it didn't have as much dialogue, knew there wasn't as much structure to it as Get Back. You knew there were not going to be any changes to it. Lots of great stuff still on it that wasn't on Get Back. After the happier Get Back series, I felt Like there wasn't as much negativity on Let It Be as I remembered it. I do feel a bit like you that it doesn't have the impact that Get Back had which is understandable.
Well, strange as it actually is, I never say the original!! I did buy the album, but I play it WAY less than any other Beatles album. I think I went into some weird kind of denial about their break-up. So, I'm still trying to decide whether to spend the bucks to sign up for Disney just to see it. I now have my own copy of "Get Back" on DVD. I think I can wait for the new film to come out on DVD. About the same expense, but with a DVD, it's mine. Thanks for your input, Matt! I think you came along just in time today!!

I don't understand why many call it a negative film. The general feeling is basically the same than in Get Back, there are happy moments and one or two negative moments. But that's how it is with any band in a creative process. Paul and George arguing is quite a minor incident... Maybe people were shocked in 1970 to realize that their favorites are human beings who can argue just like any of us. I'm sure there was similar arguments occationally from the beginning of their recording career. We know for instance that Paul walked out from the She Said She Said -session after an argument in 1966. I think Michael Lindsay-Hogg did a good job under those difficult circumstances where the band's plans were constantly changing etc.
I just watched and enjoyed it very much. Let It Be is more about the music than dialog. Get Back makes a good companion film to get more of the story but there isn't much in the way of complete performances. LIB is not as depressing as people have made it out to be. Not many negative scenes in there. I think that when this movie came out they had broken up so it was what it was. Looking at it now, we had Anthology, Free as a Bird, Real Love and Now and Then that gives us more positive closure. I agree it isn't as sharp picture quality as Get Back but I'm guessing they had to restore an actual print of the finished movie rather than Get Back being extracted from the original footage (just my guess) But I'll watch this more than Get Back just for the music performances.
Just finished watching after seeing it in the theater 54 years ago. Hadn't seen it since 1970. I actually "enjoyed" it. Loved seeing the FULL performances of the songs and the rooftop concert was great because it went straight through all the songs without the repetition as in Get Back. Of course Get Back is much more comprehensive. I enjoyed Get Back but it was too much of the same thing over and over again. And a bit too long. Seeing the rooftop concert showed what a great live band they were. Too bad they couldn't have tried to go out on the road again. Just too many issues that couldn't be resolved. It would have been nice if they 'd have lasted a little longer. But they were done and at least they went out on a high note.
I need Let It Be! Brings back memories of seeing it on the big screen in 1970, with Yellow Submarine as the ‘B’ movie, yes, we still had a second feature here in the U.K. back in the olden days! Where else can you watch The Beatles perform Besame Mucho, Shakin’ in the 60’s, Suzy Parker (or Parlour) or the fab For You Blue etc. ?
I haven't seen it, having ditched Disney+ after watching Get Back and then buying the Blu-ray set. I'm gonna hold tight and see if it comes out on Blu-ray. (if it gets an end of year release it may be a Christmas gift to myself) I'm just not motivated enough to re subscribe to a streaming service that is now charging different fees for different shows, and certainly not just to see one movie. I will see it at some point and will look forward to seeing what has been done to clean it up. The way I see it, the last time I saw it was on BBC TV here in the UK in 1982, and I can wait a bit longer for a blu-ray release. In the meantime I can enjoy my Get Back Blu-ray, despite the fact it had no extras....
Yeah not worth re subscribing to Disney just for this. It’s a fabulous reissue of Let it Be. But I’m almost certain it will get a physical release! 🙏😊👍❤️😎
Just to update you Matt, on Saturday night I was over at a friend of mine's house, and we ended up watching Let It Be, and I have to say I loved it. They have done a great job in cleaning it up. That hour and a half just seemed to flash by, but it was great to finally see it again after about 41 years. But I may upset a few fans here, but I do prefer Get Back, it gives more context as to what was going on during January '69, it may not have any full song performances, but there is some excellent footage. I will buy Let It Be should it be released on Blu ray. It's a shame that it can't be seen on cinema screens, as I feel it would look and sound even better, especially the rooftop gig.
I've just switched it on and caught the opening sequence. I love the symbolism of a half-eaten APPLE (since it was already a shit-show at that time). I'm also beginning to question whether Paul was actually playing "Adagio for Strings" because the piano was audible, but George and Ringo's chatting was NOT? So much for NO OVERDUBS
This very important truth is often denied by so many that I think this a very important and timely reminder about The Beatles, McCartney and longevity. Love that this movie is finally available and out to view….albeit with a few changes here and there. I will say because you were speaking about the concert at the end. It does sound a bit more echoey in this new version. I guess to make it sound more live, where the original and our boots it is more straight voices mix as opposed to a live sound. Still happy to have it out to at least watch for now!!
Matt I agree with you seen it on the 8th it was not bad first time I watched since 1986. I like the 50’s medley the 3 tunes in the Apple Basement and the rooftop show . What Apple should do is release the rooftop show on Vinyl for the public and collectors to get it and. Reissue of Let It Be Naked . Great video Matt!
Hey Matt, I understand what you are saying. For me I really enjoyed watching it but I did feel it’s a good trailer of GET Back. Lol. I have seen it before so too have a bootleg copy. I did enjoy watching it in its cleaned up glory. I did love the songs two of us, Let It Be , and Long and Winding Road in their complete videosk forms ( that is the one complaint I have about Get Back ). I enjoyed the concert on the rooftop and I like the different shot footage - or I. Guess I should say how Peter Jackson used different shots to show the rooftop show. Yes I can see how after Get Back Let It Be would fail or be underwhelming as I said it is a Good trailer for Get Back music number after music number lol but I’m glad it’s out there and when it is released I’ll look to buy it on BluRey as I have said before it’s a good bookend for the Get Back Film it would have gone over better if released with the Let It Be box set like the videos and doc’s where released with Sergeant. I’ll go one step further. Once you see Get Back, you realize that Let It Be is not a particularly good film. It’s choppy tells no story and looks just like a bunch of clips thrown together.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Let it Be" I feel like the film really gets to the point. Rather than seeing several types of the same song over and over again we see those takes composited into one coherent visual take. This film really focuses on the music while progressing towards the payoff on the roof.
I really enjoyed seeing it properly - only time I’ve seen it was on a dodgy RUclips version that was low quality- the rooftop segment is brilliant still . Now bring on a physical release ! (And the curse appears to have been broken -you may like my let it be video on my channel - it was particularly inspired by your fake George Harrison box set spoofing) ❤

There needs to be a complete, clean rooftop concert - every second of it, every version of every song, and no cutaways to random people in the street.

Don't get rid of your original copies - the audio is tampered with, with pluses and minuses all over the place, switch from Twickenham to Apple is not exactly the same. Some fans complain that the wording and all on opening credits is different, but on bootlegs it's been noticed that even on theatrical prints there was two or three variations on opening credits.Oh and picture quality is plus and minus all over the place compared to others in circulation, so yeah, it's good, but it doesnt fully replace anything out there among collectors.

@@matthewstreet1961 Biggest ones are the studio reverb on the vocals and distortion added to the guitars on the rooftop concerts, and we all know there are better rooftop mixes out there than that. I've Got A Feeling even changes in amount of reverb for the second half of the song with none at all, but it's back for the next song, LOL. A few seconds of Paul laughing before 'mugshots' at Twick, not on the original version....Transition between Twick and Apple footage is different....I mean, it is nice, but it makes nothing obsolete because it's different.
I was glad to see it, but Get Back is far superior. I enjoyed the thoughts!

I think another big difference is that Get Back is in chronological order. You get to see songs develop. Let it Be is quick 50 minutes and 10 minutes of 3 videos and 30 minute concert. If I am going to watch rooftop concert I will watch Let it be over Get Back.

Matt I agree with you on some of the grainny footage. Overall? It looks a lot better. I have like you to remember that original Let it be film looked a lot worse. Michael? Remember is an American? So trying to make a coherent film must have been a challenge. I like the film over all? Takes us back in time. So like you I am happy to have it available. Kind of makes you wonder what music the Beatles could have continued to make if that whole problem with Klien wouldn't have happened. I am pretty sure? They would have made solo work and eventually reunited? I really believe that.

I think it's quite appropriate that the picture is presented in 4:3, because now that Get Back exists, Let It Be feels like not seeing the full picture, in all senses. It feels like getting a small fragment of the story that we all know now.
As I said previously, for completists it's great, but for me Get Back will always best it for telling the story of the project adequately.

I kind of get what ur saying but since you've seen it many times before, I don't know what you were expecting? You knew it didn't have as much dialogue, knew there wasn't as much structure to it as Get Back. You knew there were not going to be any changes to it. Lots of great stuff still on it that wasn't on Get Back. After the happier Get Back series, I felt Like there wasn't as much negativity on Let It Be as I remembered it. I do feel a bit like you that it doesn't have the impact that Get Back had which is understandable.

Well, strange as it actually is, I never say the original!! I did buy the album, but I play it WAY less than any other Beatles album. I think I went into some weird kind of denial about their break-up. So, I'm still trying to decide whether to spend the bucks to sign up for Disney just to see it.
I now have my own copy of "Get Back" on DVD.
I think I can wait for the new film to come out on DVD. About the same expense, but with a DVD, it's mine.

I don't understand why many call it a negative film. The general feeling is basically the same than in Get Back, there are happy moments and one or two negative moments. But that's how it is with any band in a creative process. Paul and George arguing is quite a minor incident... Maybe people were shocked in 1970 to realize that their favorites are human beings who can argue just like any of us. I'm sure there was similar arguments occationally from the beginning of their recording career. We know for instance that Paul walked out from the She Said She Said -session after an argument in 1966.
I think Michael Lindsay-Hogg did a good job under those difficult circumstances where the band's plans were constantly changing etc.

I just watched and enjoyed it very much. Let It Be is more about the music than dialog. Get Back makes a good companion film to get more of the story but there isn't much in the way of complete performances. LIB is not as depressing as people have made it out to be. Not many negative scenes in there. I think that when this movie came out they had broken up so it was what it was. Looking at it now, we had Anthology, Free as a Bird, Real Love and Now and Then that gives us more positive closure. I agree it isn't as sharp picture quality as Get Back but I'm guessing they had to restore an actual print of the finished movie rather than Get Back being extracted from the original footage (just my guess) But I'll watch this more than Get Back just for the music performances.

Just finished watching after seeing it in the theater 54 years ago. Hadn't seen it since 1970. I actually "enjoyed" it. Loved seeing the FULL performances of the songs and the rooftop concert was great because it went straight through all the songs without the repetition as in Get Back. Of course Get Back is much more comprehensive. I enjoyed Get Back but it was too much of the same thing over and over again. And a bit too long. Seeing the rooftop concert showed what a great live band they were. Too bad they couldn't have tried to go out on the road again. Just too many issues that couldn't be resolved. It would have been nice if they 'd have lasted a little longer. But they were done and at least they went out on a high note.
I enjoyed both. I think Get Back and Let It Be compliment each other. I’m very happy we have Let it Be officially now. Finally! Cheers❤️😊❤️😎

Brings back memories of seeing it on the big screen in 1970, with Yellow Submarine as the ‘B’ movie, yes, we still had a second feature here in the U.K. back in the olden days!
Where else can you watch The Beatles perform Besame Mucho, Shakin’ in the 60’s, Suzy Parker (or Parlour) or the fab For You Blue etc. ?

I haven't seen it, having ditched Disney+ after watching Get Back and then buying the Blu-ray set. I'm gonna hold tight and see if it comes out on Blu-ray. (if it gets an end of year release it may be a Christmas gift to myself) I'm just not motivated enough to re subscribe to a streaming service that is now charging different fees for different shows, and certainly not just to see one movie. I will see it at some point and will look forward to seeing what has been done to clean it up. The way I see it, the last time I saw it was on BBC TV here in the UK in 1982, and I can wait a bit longer for a blu-ray release. In the meantime I can enjoy my Get Back Blu-ray, despite the fact it had no extras....

Just to update you Matt, on Saturday night I was over at a friend of mine's house, and we ended up watching Let It Be, and I have to say I loved it. They have done a great job in cleaning it up. That hour and a half just seemed to flash by, but it was great to finally see it again after about 41 years. But I may upset a few fans here, but I do prefer Get Back, it gives more context as to what was going on during January '69, it may not have any full song performances, but there is some excellent footage. I will buy Let It Be should it be released on Blu ray. It's a shame that it can't be seen on cinema screens, as I feel it would look and sound even better, especially the rooftop gig.

I've just switched it on and caught the opening sequence. I love the symbolism of a half-eaten APPLE (since it was already a shit-show at that time). Love that this movie is finally available and out to view….albeit with a few changes here and there. I will say because you were speaking about the concert at the end. It does sound a bit more echoey in this new version. I guess to make it sound more live, where the original and our boots it is more straight voices mix as opposed to a live sound. Still happy to have it out to at least watch for now!!

Hey Matt, I understand what you are saying. For me I really enjoyed watching it but I did feel it’s a good trailer of GET Back. Lol. I have seen it before so too have a bootleg copy. I did enjoy watching it in its cleaned up glory. I did love the songs two of us, Let It Be , and Long and Winding Road in their complete videosk forms ( that is the one complaint I have about Get Back ). I enjoyed the concert on the rooftop and I like the different shot footage - or I. Guess I should say how Peter Jackson used different shots to show the rooftop show. Yes I can see how after Get Back Let It Be would fail or be underwhelming as I said it is a Good trailer for Get Back music number after music number lol but I’m glad it’s out there and when it is released I’ll look to buy it on BluRey as I have said before it’s a good bookend for the Get Back Film it would have gone over better if released with the Let It Be box set like the videos and doc’s where released with Sergeant. Pepper Box Set.

I’ll go one step further. Once you see Get Back, you realize that Let It Be is not a particularly good film. It’s choppy tells no story and looks just like a bunch of clips thrown together.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Let it Be" I feel like the film really gets to the point. Rather than seeing several types of the same song over and over again we see those takes composited into one coherent visual take. This film really focuses on the music while progressing towards the payoff on the roof.
