This wood slab was supposed to become a large desk. But when the client backed out, we had to change directions...and turned it into something much better...and "bigger".

I subscribe to a LOT of woodworking channels. I rarely find myself watching the ones without narration anymore. The talking is what really personalizes the content and keeps me engaged, and your scripts are some of the best out there.
I agree...unless the piece is something REALLY special.
As someone who needs to understand the context of the project especially when it's outside of my expertise, narration that is well done, engaging, and to the point is something I don't mind at all. And though making a second video without the narration requires more time out of your day, is a good way to get more views and make more people happy. Don't let the trolls pull you down.
I agree, I watch a lot of woodworking video’s, some from other countries that don’t speak English and although the work is great, you’re wondering what is the build until the music starts playing at the end!
I enjoy your commentary of the projects, you guide me through the process. Give me insight into your decisions and direction.
@@Foureyes.Furniture it would have to be world class special to be worth watching the eversame cuts and sanding and finishing without any explanation of what idea sits behind "the build". Even though explaining the same step every time feels probably repetetive to both maker and consumer, every video is somebody's first woodmaking video and every video is somebody's 5,000th watch. There needs to be some sort of balance, at least giving hints about the design and steps and how this project is connected to what you do is essential to make thrilling content.
Else you can just watch one of these channels showing 10 hours of trainrides without comment or a campfire or whatever. Woodworking isn't that zen ;)
OMG the whole reason I watch your videos is what you say. I don’t build, use tools, or play with wood but I enjoy your humor and storytelling.
Appreciate that...if everyone were like you. I could save myself a lot of time by getting rid of the building portions. Just a blank screen with me rambling on about God knows what for 28 minutes.
@@Foureyes.Furniture see, I think I'd watch that video too!
@@marialeotta2973 me too
Hey wait…isn’t that what podcasts are for!😂
@@Foureyes.Furniture: Honestly, both aspects are enjoyed. Like "they" say, "A picture is worth a thousand words".
What?! No talking. The videos you narrate over are some of the most soothing and enjoyable content on RUclips! I love your narration. Perfect mix of description, thought process and humor!
i loved your math for justifing the investment of the cnc
Personally, as someone who wants to make furniture for themselves, hearing at least part of your thought process and how you overcome some of the challenges is really enlightening and I love hearing you talk. Keep it up man, you're doing beautifully.
Wow, thank you! Appreciate that :)
I agree on the problem solving, many could learn from you on that alone.
The majority of us are inspired by you and your comments so thank you
As an auditory learner, the voiceovers (or direct to cameras) really help me to process what I'm seeing on the screen. I LOVE what you do.
Your videos and narration are by far the most relaxing of the several hundred I subscribe to. I’m a fan of both silence and talking but I really think you should see the overwhelming amount of comments in here that feel the same way I do. It makes you channel feel personal to me. Especially if you’re quiet in real life. What a treat for the viewers.
I actually like listening to you. You tell it in such a way that can be understood by those of us who don’t have a lot of knowledge but come here both to learn and be entertained! Keep talking, your voice is soothing and you talk naturally as if you are talking to one person.
Quick question, how have you not filled your shop to the rafters with stuff? I’m always blown away and jealous by the blank walls.
I would say "I just like things clean"...but the truth is I'm extremely self-conscious and suffer from imposter syndrome, which makes me believe everything is going to end at any moment, forcing me into acting like a guest in my own shop and keeping me from ever putting stakes down and feeling like I truly belong.
...that and the cinderblock is a pain to drill into.
@@Foureyes.Furniture I only discovered you 2 weeks ago but I could hear every word of this in your voice.
@@Jessev741 SO TRUE!
Don't believe this guy. He didn't start his comment with "Promotion or Shine" so you know he didn't watch to the end of the video. /S
@@Foureyes.Furniture God bless you bro, we all have our own imperfections... ❤❤
I do think your channel is at it's best when you are discussing what you are doing during the build. If I didn't want to hear it I would put the volume to 0. Keep up the great work! The coffee table looks great!
I appreciate that!
For the record I hate videos without commentary. So I will continue to watch your main channel with all the talking. As a fellow woodworker I want to hear the process and explanation of what’s going on so I can learn and improve.
I will have to disagree! My jaw did drop. What a beautiful piece ! God bless
I love your drawings and diagrams, they help understand everything much better. So glad you kept them.
Thanks...I weirdly love making them :)
Your mood is calm and relaxed. Your voice is clear and understandable. Your comments are on the mark, neither condescending nor insulting. And your woodworking skills are top notch. I encourage you to ignore the trolls. (Yes, I know their comments can hurt.) Thanks for your great channel.
Thank you! 😊
Appreciate the kind words of encouragement :)
I agree. Don't listen to trolls who try to suppress or silence you or change your commentary! Keep up the great work.
I absolutely agree here.
@@Foureyes.Furniture i also love your come backs to haters online they are hilarious
@@Foureyes.Furniture thank you for the effort that goes into this work, and these videos.
a big reason I watch/listen to your videos is because you have a really nice voice, and talk about a variety of things. I'm glad you can accommodate others with another channel without speaking. keep up the good work.
I love your commentary. Your uncertainty and willingness to talk the audience through the decision making process is refreshing. Most of us are just winging it, all the time. At least we can hear your reasoning and learn a little something too.
ive never really watched any wood working channels, but your narration got me to stick around, honestly. your scripts are very well written, and your voice is super calming and pleasant to listen to, especially after a rough day. keep up the great work!
Wow, thanks! I really appreciate that :)
Almost a million subs, so proud how far your channel has come!!! =)
Thank you...It's kinda hard to believe...but I'm very thankful for it :)
🎉
Keep kicking ass! You and Shaun are two of my favorites out there!
Sitting here, one earplug in. Listening to you for the first time, forgetting I’m watching something. For the first time.
Also, the piece turned out bonkers. More of it all.
Haters gonna hate, no matter what. I love the running dialog, and how the woodworking flows along and it's like you look up and realize "Oh, I should explain this bit." Humans are story tellers, so just building a beautiful coffee table is great, but getting the story behind the build, in the makers own words, is next level. I've seen a lot of paintings where I wish I had a clue what the artist was thinking. Thanks again for another great video!
Appreciate that...and thank you so much for watching :)
You're absolutely spot on about being a good teacher ( I suggest you're more than good) ... you have the ability to break down complex processes into easily understood sub processes ... in addition, the dry humor is fabulous commentary! ... thoroughly enjoy watching your work flow, as well as admiring the design work!
Thank you so much...really appreciate that :)
Exactly. I subscribed a few weeks ago or maybe 6, I don’t know what time is anymore. Anyway, I’m an architect and enjoy learning about the design process and physical properties wood has. Exciting to learn how splaying (edit: spalting , probably misspelled it) happens. That’s new for me. But I’d love to have the coffee table you designed in this vid. I just don’t have the slab of walnut I’d prefer it be made from nor the 5 or so days to build it. But I definitely feel that I could. You are really a great teacher.
I like the talk. The detail is great and you have a calming tone. I almost always click away from woodworking videos that don’t have narration.
First thing, you are amazingly humble. The fact that you gave credit to haters for inspiring you to create a second channel is amazing and inspiring. I like your speaking voice and enjoy your self criticism and banter.
Thing two, you really are an excellent teacher. It's amazing you offer build plans that are so detailed and more so that you are offering this one for free.
Type C, I think you make top notch work and though you may be more critical of yourself than many other folks would be, you still put it out there and show your successes and mistakes.
thank you for the kind words. I have to admit though...part of that "thank you" was me being sarcastic :)
I really love what you do man. I just stumbled on your page after look for relaxing woodworking videos, and I really liked your personality and humor you put into your voiceovers. Keep up the good work!
Awesome, thank you! Glad you found me and enjoy :)
This was the first video I have ever clicked on that had no views. That means, I could have been the first view... and as the self proclaimed first viewer. I can with all honesty say, that I watch your videos to listen to you talk. Have gotten so much inspiration from your videos. You are humble and true to yourself. Keep at it.
Thanks man...appreciate it. I think the video says 0 views for a while. The view count always lags behind a bit.
just wanted to say i appreciate the voice overs all the talking actually makes a difference, that being said might turn on the one without as some background ambiance lol
Lining up the top of the legs against the fence , then cutting the bottom of the legs on the table saw was a neat trick to get a clean and accurate cut,
Another vote for narration, there are plenty of other RUclips videos with only the presenters hands in shot and no words at all!.
Thanks...yeah, anytime I can cut an assembly like that...I go for it. Gotta be careful though, sometimes those cuts can get a little sketchy
I have aspergers (autistic spectrum) I love listening to you, no wasted dialogue talking about things that are irrelevant. Given your talent I would say you are on the spectrum, super high functioning and willing to share your entire knowledge catalogue for nothing. No offense meant if you aren’t, but we tend to recognize the trait in each other.
If it's a spectrum...I guess we're all on it somewhere right? JK. Appreicate the support...and I think most people like the talking. It's just an (ironically) vocal minority.
@@Foureyes.Furnitureusing the term spectrum is a way of describing everyone, however the spectrum is a polite way of describing those of us that aren’t neurotypical. I only discovered this when I was 45, nothing changed it just helped me understand why I thought differently from others.
Anyway, I love your furniture, love the videos, incredible content.
Hi, I like to weigh in on this, I've Asperger's as well. The philosophical musings of our friend show to me he embraces the atypical. In that he has an overlap with what is reckognized by most as autistic behaviour. Also the monomanical pursuit of these project could define autistic behaviour, but, our woordworking friend shows also a lot of non-autistic trades. But where the atypical overlap shows? Mainly in the musings? Yeah... it's almost asmr! So, a relaxing bonus on top of the nice projects. Still... having said all this, can we have a non-slab project, the next time? A chair maybe?
And the autism spectrum is limited. There's a bottom limit. So, most people are NOT on it! (which gives it a nice sheen of exclusiveness. 😁)
I find it really interesting that there is something inherent to these videos that appeals to those of us that are atypical. I have ADHD and ASD and there is nothing better for me to work to than Chris presenting a Four Eyes video. Other woodworking videos with similar presentation help as well, but they haven't managed to get the self deprecating humor down as well as Chris and don't feature any where near enough AJ1 styled push blocks!
Dude, the commentary throughout your videos is why I recently started following the channel. 🤘 I dig it and the beautiful art.
I personally find your talking to be. Just. Right. You’re not monotone, your not super edgy or excited, and you keep it in topic. You have excellent cinematography, your designs are excellent.
I hate channels with no talking, and I hate having the same “pocket hole this, box store that” content so many others propagate.
I personally love the voice over, I want to know the process and the things you learned while making. It's super interesting!
Having said that I'm also a massive fan of woodworking videos that have the ASMR vibe. You're hitting both demographics now you genius!
This is an AMAZING coffee table - don't get that twisted
And
Keep talking. For us learners it's not only helpful it's motivational because you're human
You make watchers and listeners feel "don't worry you can do this too. Chris and Shaun will help you"
Peace
Aside the wood crafting, camera work on these videos is one of the best i seen!
As a non-woodworker, I love your designs, your build videos, and your narration. Makes me feel part of something beautiful!
As someone who does video voiceover, I can tell you that yours is excellent! Great script, great tempo and style ... improves the video. Anyone else can just turn down the volume, for pete's sake!
Honestly, I didn’t even notice you were woodworking I enjoy the dialogue so much.
Just as an antidote, I am attracted to your videos for your ramblings!
Keep it up buddy....
I love your work and the voice overs. You have inspired me to design more modern pieces. Keep up the great work!
AND the voice overs hahaha
Definitely a phenomenal teacher! I am a beginner and this is the first video I've seen that wasn't someone goofing off or sounding too pretentious. You teach it like it is and I really appreciate that!
Very honest to include the Blacktail product mention near the end of the video; Cam’s videos are interesting to watch but with a very heavy focus on epoxy surfaces, but you go to a higher level with excellent instruction on real woodworking. The talking is perfectly pitched.
That colour change in the magnolia is almost like some really expensive exotic rosewood (although maybe it was just as expensive)
So your narration makes a real difference and add to your immense design skills, your designs are always so refined, never to less, never to much! Absolutely unique in my opinion
From one designer to another, your work and videos are very enjoyable to watch and listen to. I would also go as far as saying that it’s inspiring because your work helps others be more creative. Keep doing you.
Wow, thank you! Really appreciate that :)
This long form is my favorite. Talk all you want man.
Excellent project. Stop worrying about what others say, focus on your craft.
Listening to your commentary is my favorite part of the 4 Eyes YT Channel experience. Just sayin.
You never disappoint, your designs are really fantastic, the woodworking a pleasure to see and the finishing is sublime! I do also really enjoy your narration, it adds context to the films and learning of your thought processes 👏👍😀
Thank you very much!
Wow. I'm really looking forward to these plans. I so wanted to do one of your builds but never had the extra money or time to fork out for it. I think the learning part of it is more what I'm wanting then anything. But yeah. Highly anticipating this.
What he said!
Ĥy, Rainman Ray speaks constantly, with spoken sound effects included!
For what it’s worth, I enjoy the commentary
I love to hear your commentary on the build because you're so knowledgeable and a great teacher! but, as someone who doesn't woodwork and stumbled across these videos as relaxing background during work, I'm also so excited that you're doing a channel of no talking videos for me to zone out to 😂
Thanks! I think the other channel will definitely be nicer for background noise. But hope you can continue to enjoy both for different reasons :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture absolutely!
Haha! I like the talking. I also like the sound of tools... so I'll see about giving both channels a watch... or maybe watch the one where you talk, and listen to the other in the background so I can imagine I'm in the woodshop doing my desk job while you build furniture. HA.
...and I'll appreciate racking up the views for 8 hours a day M-F as that background noise :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture happy to give the views. Especially as it’s a very low effort way to support what you provide through your videos.
I'm a simple man. I see Big John on your videos, I upvote. You need to do a sit down interview or an AMA with him and just plumb the depths of his knowledge.
i enjoy the commentary. screw the people saying shut up
Really appreciate all of the work you put into your pieces, the videos, and all of the details you add into the videos. I appreciate the talking and listening to how you work through your process. Thank you and keep up the great work.
I appreciate that you appreciate it :)
It's definitely a lot of work...but I figure, they'll be around forever, so...
You're one of the best teachers I've ever encountered! Don't change a thing, love your style
Wow, thank you!
Great storytelling and explaining.
Well Done!! There is no need to cry. Go ahead!
sometimes i wish i could just give a like twice for the amount quality and effort these videos must take. just like a double like.
and i dont know if you and Shaun get this a lot, but your jokes are actually pretty funny, not that there were too many in this video, but just saying, you dont need to stop with the jokes.
oh, and i cant wait for your mechanical pencil, it really does look awesome
Thanks...a few people tell us. But more people probably just think we're lame :)
@@Foureyes.Furniture in one of your videos, im not sure which one, but apparently you said that people dont usually reply to your replies, but i quite like that you actually reply to comments like mine, it also makes me happy to know that you wrote this specifically to me, but thx for replying
Well, those people would be wrong. In my opinion. Anyways, people don’t tend to like or subscribe or support on patreon because they don’t like what a creator is doing. Rather the opposite, actually. I love your humor, and every comment I‘ve read so far here said about the same thing. You‘ll always find haters under every video of every big creator, no matter what kind of content you make. What’s important is that for you, the amount of people who love your stuff is disproportionately greater than the amount of haters.
I‘m not against taking criticism to heart, that’s a good thing. But if they’re rude and hateful about it, they don’t deserve your attention. And if they want you to change anything, they can say that in a nice way.
Great and informative video. I love the talking and instruction/narration! I have stopped many videos with cook thumbnails when I realize its no talking. They just aren't my thing. Love your content!👍
Keep talking, that how we learn. You are a great teacher
One of the classiest woodworking RUclipsrs from the americas, really beautiful pieces. Could be Japanese could be scandi, absolute class!
Your voice is one of the reasons I watch this channel over other ones
You now have my attention. I like what you doing. Let’s build and learn
Love this book! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxpCNxqmAkyjN6NPx1fyB7QiEFWyO5mUWL it is simply one-of-a-kind! I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. Amazon was great, they delivered on time. Thank you!
I'm apparently different than the nay sayers, I like the narration a lot more than silent videos. More often than not, I'm "watching" videos while doing something else and narration allows me to follow along and know when to look for when something important or technical is going on. I don't have hours to just stare at my screen and watch a video lol. Keep it up, I'm trying to formulate my own style and your style and Nick Pedullas style are kinda of a combination of what I like to build. Great stuff.
I have nearly finished building this coffee table and what a brilliant set of plans and video instruction. Just got to sand it now and put the finishing coats on. I have been so inspired by this course, I have bought the Pico Console Table course now and I am so looking forward to reading and watching all the videos before my next adventure. Foureyes you are a inspiration and highly recommended
The second thing I love after your beautiful designs, is your talking. Please never stop !
I LIKE TO HEAR YOU TALK WHILE YOU WORK. IVE BEEN WITH YOU FROM THE BEGINNG. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND TALK AWAY!
Dude, the narration in your videos is one of the things I enjoy about your channel! It’s a really nice way to be able to follow along throughout the build, plus, I’m a sucker for dry humor. Keep up the great work! 👍👍
I like the talking and your solution for those that don’t.
It was your soothing voice that drew me to your videos in the first place!
I really love your sense of humor.
Expecting ChatGPT to give you any kind of reliable answer is hilarious.
Beautiful table.
Like hearing you talk about what you are doing.
Man, you don't talk too much. You ARE a teacher. I taught for 30 years and you, like a few others on this vast subterranean vault called RUclips, have the gift. Your ability to break concepts down into workable segments is excellent. I'm a relatively new woodworker (hybrid-do a lot by hand/retired etc) and after two hours of watching you guys I've already gained at least $5000 worth of saving (less wasted wood!). Be well. You obviously enjoy your work.
Great videos. Love your honest opinions and self-awareness. Don't stop anything you're doing, the recipe works!
i like watching videos with people talking and explaining their thoughts as well as joking around, because it keeps my brain focused on the video
Hi guys, been following your channel for some time now, really like the content presentation, the sense of humour, and appreciate the effort that goes into these
videos, thanks a ton for sharing the plans free of cost, I really appreciate it, and am in awe that you would share this for free after putting so much of effort and time into it, please keep up the good work.
Came here for the thumbnails, stayed for the narration. Your pieces are amazing, and as a newbie, I always come away with some valuable lessons learned. Feel free to yak away.
KEEP TALKING! Love your humor and honesty
I'm a superfan, it's your show talk all you want.
Thanks...and will do :)
we need Sound of Saws !
I actually like you talking. Especially when you get sensitive about the comments. Your work is so beautiful, I cannot conceive that you would be bothered by comments of people who, chances are, are not worth bothering with. Good luck
this is my first video from you and I love your talking during it. Liked and subscribed. People complaining forgot there is a mute button...
I LOVE YOUR TALKING! ALSO YOU'RE A GREAT TEACHER!
Agree with teaching and design being your strengths. Proud to be a Patron of yours.
The Ira Glass of woodworking ❤
Your dialog is soothingly pleasant. I love you and your videos. You have grown your channel while keeping yourself grounded. Your voice and videos are as warm as Watching Norm on a 33 inch tube TV while laying on the floor on a Sunday afternoon in the mid 80s. Thank you
best segway to a new channel ever.
I also really enjoy your calm and informative narrative. However, I really love your design, your pieces are so simple, the lines work so well and they are so balanced. Absolutely inspiring.
I like the talking! It is nice to hear your insights and you have a great speaking voice. Keep it up!
Just beautiful! I can't wait for the plans to totally mess the project up! Thank you so much for the opportunity to get them, Chris. Keep up the great work!
Excellent build. Thanks for all your work. Screw all the haters and keep it up.
I definitely have a love/hate relationship with your voiceover, it's a great idea to have started the new channel.
It has almost become a meme to hate on your voiceover, so I'm glad you have harnessed the power of the haters for your own betterment. Love it!
It has? Oh no!!!
I thought I was the only one meme-ifying it in my videos
@@Foureyes.Furniture What if your self memeing has created such a feedback loop that it has presented itself as a truth of the universe.
Maybe you have somehow developed to ability to shape the fabric of reality with your voiceovers.
After watching a good portion of your videos, I have to agree that you are a great teacher. Keep up the good work. Oh, and keep talking. It is engaging.
Love your work brother, it's creators like you that have given me years of knowledge that has turned my side hustle/hobby into a full fledge business. Thank you!
For what it's worth, Chris: I enjoy the narration. I know a lot of people watch woodworking videos as "ASMR" or "Oddly Satisfying" nowadays, but many of us actually like to learn new tricks, tips, and design insights for our own projects. I've benefited immensely from your "talking" over the years. If I want oddly satisfying/relaxing, I'll go watch some person play with colorful sand or something.
Just want to say thank you both for everything you do. The plans are incredible.
Love you. Do not change anything about you. Finally, thank you. You are the gift, and the projects a bonus.
I don’t have the first idea of woodworking, but I love learning about how the things I use in my everyday life are created. I could just watch your videos without you talking, but honestly, if I want saw sounds, I‘ll just buy a tiny piece of cheap wood and saw it up myself. I got a saw.
What I‘m here for is learning about the process, and as you said, you’re great at teaching. Without your voice to explain why on earth you’re cutting this piece the way you do and not a different way, I wouldn’t have a clue what’s going on. I love your explanations, please keep up the good work.
