  • After five days and six nights of riding and camping and the loss of four out of our six original riders, the end of the Washington BDR is finally near. In this final installment of the WABDR video series, Tim and I finish WABDR section 2 and jump immediately into WABDR section 1. Our Washington Backcountry Discovery Route journey started in Canada, and today we reach the Bridge of the Gods and the Oregon Border.
We started our BDR Adventure this morning by waking up atop Bethel Ridge on Washington BDR section 2. After descending the ridge, skirting the edge of Rim Rock Reservoir, and gassing up in Packwood Washington, we turned off the pavement onto Washington BDR section 1, the last and easiest section of the WABDR. This WABDR section 1 is mostly fast gravel, with a few cool highlights like Mt. Adams, Takhlakh Lake, ice caves, natural bridges, and the like.
After a long day of Husqvarna Norden 901 off road riding and covering a ton of miles, we finally reached our destination: The Bridge of the Gods and the end of the Washington BDR.

I just watched your entire series of the WABDR, and I really enjoyed it. Last year I rode part of the Kentucky Adventure Trail (KAT) on my XR650L, and I learned the same lesson that you did on your trip. Heavy bikes and technical trails are best left to advanced level riders who are in pretty good shape. I packed light for the KAT, and I would estimate the bike and gear were at about 365lbs. The fire roads and double track were fun and easy, but I had a very hard time on the tight technical single track. I dropped the bike several times. We were riding up steep muddy and rutted trails with lots of rocks. It wore me out. I can't imagine trying technical trails on a big ADV bike.
I actually have a 2016 CB500X with only 1500 miles on it. I got a great deal on it when I found it a couple years ago, but I have never taken it off road. I don't think I ever will either. It has a wet weight of 430lbs which is close to the Norden's weight. After the KAT experience, I made the decision to sell it. Unfortunately I also bought the expensive Rally Raid kit for it, but I never installed it. I lost the desire after getting my butt handed to me on that trip.
I know there are a lot of guys who will say I just need to practice more and suck it up, but in my opinion, why should I ride something that I don't enjoy. I learned awhile ago that I need to keep myself safe and happy and not cater to popular opinion. I have nothing to prove. I consider myself a fairly experienced intermediate level rider. I'm 56 and I've been riding since I was 13, but I don't do it enough to be a great rider, and I'm not getting any younger. I'm planning on riding the MABDR and NEBDR next year, and I may take the XR650L, but I'm also seriously considering riding my street legal (with electric start) XR400. I have no intention of riding on the freeway.
Thanks again for posting the videos and for reading this.

Looking forward to a report on how the Norden performed and if a decision on which bike stays around has been made. I rode the first two sections on a 2019 690 Enduro - trip was cut short as one of our riders was injured. The 690 seemed like the perfect setup for the BDR and my skill level.

My son and I just finished the WABDR this last week. We rode a 2016 GSA1200 and a 2021 GSA1250. It's a tough one and the whoops/washouts on the big bikes were unreal on sect 3. My son only had a couple of weeks practice on the bike and weighing in wet at 145 lbs he did an amazing job! Try the IDBDR much easier and in my opinion much better. Less traffic and smaller towns.

I don't know that I want to put an entire BDR on my bucket list, but definitely a few sections!
Looking forward to more camping trips with Chewy! I need to catch up on some of your videos, but hopefully you found some new camp sites devoid of obnoxious, noisy Ewoks.😆

Way to keep going and make the experiences and memories. Great videos too. Ya'll can call me a puss all day but strictly in my opinion, a 250 lb to 350 lb bike is plenty for the BDR's. Not as good on the highways, true, but easier off road if you pack correctly, I mean light enough.

Man I'm very envious of your BDR! The Trans Euro Trail (TET, the European equivalent) doesn't have such open large roads and huge sceneries, it's much more technical so less fun for riders like me that just want to leave asphalt without hitting heavy rocks.
