Man the NightHawks ruled back in the day.. He also played Flying V as well.. Would take a 20 minute solo and walk the whole crowd on both the first and second floor of the Mad Monk in Wilmington NC.. great memories..
Saw him with the Nighthawks all over DC area in the 70’s and later with his band the Drivers. The Hawks played at our Madison College ( now JMU ) Auto Auction party ( a huge warehouse type place we packed out )………
Saw him many times in Houston back in the 80's & 90's. One of the best to ever strap on a guitar & dare I say, if I had to pick between him & SRV it'd be Jimmy. I guess he's still living in Belize.
Check out Mark Wenner and The Nighthawks backing Pinetop Perkins that I loaded last week. They were really paying homage to Pinetop in their set so not driving as hard as they normally would. Saw them many years back at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest... great performance - great venue!
I saw Jimmy first in a small bar on ocracoke Island when he was still with the nighthawks. Back in the mid-80s. Later in the early 2000s, l saw him a number of times in the Tampa area. One of my favorites.
Must have been a great show(s), was that the Tampa Bay Blues Fest? Mark Wenner still fronts The Nighthawks and you can catch the band (without JT) as they back Pinetop Perkins in the video we posted last week.
This is smoke'n! I'm 63 never heard of him until now. ??? How and why? I don't know. Great guitar player and band. The thing I love is he pretty much just stands there and plays, no trying to look cool moves. And, most important, he doesn't make those idiotic faces that too many players use. Good stuff here. Now, I'v got to go do some research on Jimmy.
Glad you enjoyed it... JT is the real deal. There are a lot of great players out there most we will never hear of or see. Blues Fests are the best way to discover bands that are not on your radar... the guys who put the fests together look for the best players that are different and also make an impact on an audience. Be sure to subscribe to my channel and check out the guitar slingers that I've already loaded like Walter Trout, Larry McCray and check out the explosive James Montgomery episode with the 15 piece Shaboo/Mohegan Sun Allstars... 3 keyboards, 2 drummers, 5 horns, the Joe Cocker backup singers and more Also I will be loading out other national performers over the next weeks and months (just have to wait for Tinsley Ellis)
Yes Joe Barden pickups. I came across an interview of JT a few years back and he talked about them but I couldn't find the old article but the attached short RUclips clips he talks about his strat and pickups ruclips.net/video/6_0NeUU06UY/видео.html
@ I remember one of his CDs showed a close up that showed the pickups. I always loved Barden Pickups so I always check guitars for the staggered blades. Great video link…Thanks
I wonder if Jimmy is going to tour anymore in the USA? I would like to see some new videos. I think Mark Bumgardner is in bad health and unable to play anymore. 👋
Based upon his facebook page looks like he has no plans to resume touring. I think the Covid epidemic and bandmates health issues must have put the kibosh on putting the band back together. I feel bad for the many bands/musicians who had their music career cut shut because of the disease.
If I'm not mistaken Carmine Appice was the drummer for Vanilla Fudge. JT has had many bass players but for this show at the Berlin Blues Fest he had "Mark 'Bumpy Rhodes' Bumgarner" from North Carolina (who is still active in the music scene down there.
@@tjsmith3741 its funny as Carmine is the spitting twin of bass player Mark Bungarten! I came across a cool interview of Carmine below at 75 years old and he looks and sounds great! ruclips.net/video/eAe6LsdYIlc/видео.html
Yeah I saw an interview where he talks about those Barden pickups. Also why he bolted on the neck of his Strat to keep it from going out of tune whenever he used the whammy bar.
I saw a couple years back he talked about moving to Belize from Eureka Springs with his wife and the big adjustment it was. It didn't mention her name but everything alluded to the wife being Sally. Maybe JT will pick up on this post and confirm?
@ Well Sally was the director of the Eureka Springs (Ark) Blues Fest for many years back in the ‘90s-‘2000s She booked Jimmy & his band one year & that’s how they met, & got married. the rest is history as they say. I worked for Sally as a Stage Crew manager for most of the bands she booked for Blues Fest. That’s how I know her and met Jimmy. One was my boss,(Sally) & one was the talent (client) Jimmy. Until I saw your post, I hadn’t heard anything about either one of them in years & I was just curious. Thanks for your comment, maybe Jimmy or Sally will return a comment. Yeah, "live" recording concerts is always a challenge. For audio we take a direct feed off of the soundboard (from the sound company) and we also put a microphone on the main speakers which gives us a balance of the 2 sources. So typically, what we get is what the audience hears (sometimes better), but "live" sound production especially outdoors is a delicate balance that can change from the weather and size of the audience.
@@BluesPlateSpecial No I didn't, and I'm probably not going to. It was just a comment on phrasing a statement. Americans are bad at it. Like using the term hot water heater, which makes no sense. Basically I was being a wise ass. Sorry. I'm sure he's good at what he does, but it's not really my cup of tea. I used to love the blues. Then I did sound at a blues festival for a couple of years. Now I can't listen to more than one song. Blues overload.

I did not pickup on that so I will have to go back and watch it closer, but Bruce Katz is one of the top Hamond Organ players in the country. He has a Masters Degree in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston. He played on 6 of Ronnie Earl's albums. He has led his own band The Bruce Katz Band and simultaneously is a sought-after sideman for recording and touring with many other artists, such as Delbert McClinton, Duke Robillard, Joe Louis Walker, Debbie Davies, David "Fathead" Newman, John Hammond and multiple offshoots of the Allman Brothers Band. So definitely an experienced B3 player.

I was not aware that he lives in Belize... looks like he is still there with his wife. Heard its a great place for fishing.
Saw The Nighthawks at Jokers 3 Greensboro North Carolina! Amazing band and show.

DC!
Awesome vid….been checking him out since seeing him at Wilbert’s in CLE back in the 90’s….
A lot of great Blues played there, I think they are temporarily closed
One of my favorites is a song called Cool Guitar
A favorite of mine too!
amazing!👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. It's encouraging to know that other folks appreciate great music (and blues).

Excellent 💪🤠✌️

Blues can get monotonous, but not with Jimmy playing. Great jams James!

Bethesda ‘s finest blues man ,sorry Mark !😎
I remember when he was a skinny boy playing at graffiti’s in DC. That’s where the nighthawks cut their teeth.
Did another of my favorites from the DC area play there... Deanna Bogart?

If he closes his sets with kick ass tunes, doen't that imply the rest of his sets are lame?
