  • It was a tight race between the MB-01 Alpha Romeo car and the TC-01 Mercedes CLK race car when I asked you guys what you wanted to see built from my birthday haul. I chose to start with the MB-01 since I just got dome with a lengthy build of the Hilux (that video is coming up!!) so I wanted to go to one that seemed a little easier!!
    It was a fun build, and it does not take too long either! There are a couple quirks and things to look out for. The body seems fairly straight forward as well so that should get wrapped up this weekend, I hope!
    Enjoy the build and my thoughts on it. Let me know what you think of it and do you have one or are wanting to get one.
    You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

    It's good to see a new chassis from Tamiya. The fact that it's multifunctional probably means we are going to be looking at it for quite some time! It's a cracking body too.

      It is a cool idea and a neat little chassis. I just hope it doesn't just become the two of them as their only on-road platforms as it would get boring after some time, kind of like the TT02 being the whipping boy for them for the last decade! I am sure I will buy more regardless, I am weak! LOL!

    Now, that is an interesting new design that Tamiya created. The ability to go front or rear wheel drive is pretty cool. I agree with you I hope this doesn't become the norm. Looking forward to seeing your finished work. Thanks for sharing, take care and best wishes to you and the family.

      It is a pretty cool chassis setup and a cool idea to be able to flip flop it to make the correct wheelbase and drive design for the particular car body. I am just guessing but I think we will see a lot of European bodies on this chassis and more of the normal sports cars and such on the bigger BT01 chassis and the super cars and such will still be on the TT02 until they replace that. again, all speculation as Tamiya often is confusing and keeps us guessing! LOL! I am lookin forward to seeing it running around a parking lot soon I hope! Take care Al!!

    Hi Addam, nice video my friend and a great overview of this new chassis. I enjoyed the rant about the manual and the electronics and agree, what were they thinking?!?!?! Good choice with the motor and those low friction balls. Looking forward to seeing it with the finished body! Cheers! 😎👌👍

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  4 месяца назад +1

      It is a neat chassis and it I look forward to playing around with the different setups. The ESC things is dumb, I can give them a break on the old manuals but this is a new kit and those ESCs are not available so why design it and the manual to use them? At least they could have made a spot to mount it properly. I used double stick tape but it you use it a lot it will eventually fail. Bad decision on their part. I though the ST motor would give it a bit more pepe and the low friction steel balls seem to help out over the standard plastic ones. I kind of want to replace them on all my TT02 kits but I don't want to spend that much money on them! LOL! I am looking forward to seeing it done and zooming around too! Take care Mark!

    I like it. I also like the MT01 Poor Boys RC recently did. I understand the frustration with slop in the connections but having a platform that can transform is neat. The slop can be mitigated but I’m mostly building for fun, a few runs, then onto another build. Have a great week Addam.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  4 месяца назад +1

      I have that Supra on the way as well, I think it will be a fun one! I can live with the normal slop in it from all the linkages and stuff that makes it able to be flipped and flopped around. The axles though is kind of unacceptable for a brand new design, one that is 30+ years old is understandable but bearing are a very precise for a reason and they should be able to make the hubs in a manner that does not allow for that much slop. I can fault them for poor design there, as well as the manual including their ESC when they are not making them. That was a head shaker too! I know I was sounding rough on it but I want to make sure folks now the issues with it and I am not just presenting the sunshine and rainbows review of it. LOL! My driving does not warrant a fine, precision race car at all but I do want to to not look like the wheels are going to part ways as it drives around! LOL! Take care Trey! I finally found what I was looking for yesterday and I have you stuff boxed up. I forgot where I had put a tote of some stuff I had made and finally remembered! It will be on its way very soon.

      They do seem to do the trick on helping tighten up the suspension slop. I kind of want to replace them on all my TT02 kits now but I don't want to spend that much money on them! LOL! That is true! The out of sequence thing was annoying but I can see where they did it to fit the steps on the pages a bit better. The instructions showing their old ESC and not the 1060s they are all coming with not is just dumb to me but I am not a designer, marketing person or a tester for them so I will have to mumble my complaints here and live with it! LOL!

      Yeah did not see why they went from "install electronics" to "build the wheels and tires", then "mount the wheels and tires" and then circle back to "tidy up your wiring exactly like this". The ESC thing was also a bone head thing to have in there and not design the car to accommodate the 1060 they all are coming with. At least make a supplemental insert for it and provision to screw the switch in place. They like to keep us guessing!

I can see these being "the thing" for a while as they are new and interesting, I just want them to be the only options. Right now the axle slop is the worst bit and that is easy to fix, I was just out of shims/washers for the axles. I guess I used them all up on the speed run car build. More are on their way so I can get that fixed before running it. Overall I am happy with it and excited to see it done. I just have to be careful cutting out that body! It is thin! The chrome bits and all the stickers going on the super curvy shapes looks like frustration. I will have to see how many bits are molded in chrome and how many are decals to decide.

Interestingly our kits come with pre-painted bodies. I initially set mine up FWD, but after some track time switch to an FR setup and I like how it drives. 👍

      It was a fun build and I like the ability to swap things around really fast to change from rwd to fwd in minutes! The axle slop was unacceptable from a newly designed kit but the rest of the slop is kind of unavoidable considering the adjustability and interchangeability of the whole chassis. I am sure it will be a fun one to drive and I know I am going to enjoy seeing it run, the body on this just looks happy and fun!

      It is a neat little chassis. The ESC switch thing is annoying and like I said, for the old ones I can cut them some slack for not changing the entire manual for the new stuff but for the newly designed kit to have an ESC shown in it you have not been able to buy for 2 years is pretty dumb! I was able to mount it securely but they could have easy made provisions for it, just refuse to whish is lazy and stupid!

    Cool! I ordered the fiat but then cancelled it lol - I wanted the chassis but the body just wasn’t grabbing me. I’m waiting for the next body style they do on this. Something will stand out for me. But I agree with you this is an Italian herbie! :) as a whole just like the BT-01 I’m really happy to see that you can configure the motor/drivetrain to whatever car is being built. If it’s a front engine rear drive car then you can build it that way. But I agree with you about the electronics. If the 1060 is going to be the new norm their cars and instructions should be designed for them. Unless…this ESC issue isn’t permanent? Who knows. Weird axle slop though…not sure I understand what they did there. But great stuff as always.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey there Freddy! I could not order the Fiat, I am just not a fan of the looks of it. I am sure in person it is probably better but I just couldn't. When this came out it looked too fun so it went high up on the list. The chassis is pretty neat and I can see some custom builds being done on it with other non-Tamiya bodies as it is pretty adjustable. The width is really the limiting factor with it. The ESC thing really was sill to me, they could have at least made a provision in there for the 1060 switch but instead did it for their old stuff you can't get, it made no sense to me. I will demonstrate fixing the axle slop in the next video, I thought I had the shims to do it but was completely out. It is a simple fix, I just don't understand the reason for that much play from a newly designed kit.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  4 месяца назад

      Yes, it does have droop screw in the upper arms. I forgot to mention that, it is kind of nice to be able to limit the suspension travel/ride height with them. In the stock settings there is a lot of travel in the rear and very little in the front. I softened the front a tiny bit but it is cool to have the adjustment there to tinker and tune with. I look forward to seeing it zipping around a parking lot some time soon!

    I do like the various configurations of this chassis. But it seems to just equal more tamiya slop. Which in general is a shame. But even with slop tamiyas don't drive that bad. • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  4 месяца назад

      It is a neat little chassis and it is far from a race spec car but is really cool to be able to swap it around so fast to other configurations. I know there is a lot of racing done with Tamiya kits but I have never seen their on-road cars as 'race cars' just cars you can race. I know there are top end kits nobody really buys unless they are racing, I am not counting them. The TT02s and TT01s, TL01s ect. are all to me cool cars to drive on-road but are not race cars. So with that I am looking at this the exact same way, it should be a fun and versatile little kit that will be fun to drive but will never be a great race car. I am sure there will be plenty of folks racing them but folks out there race snow shovels too LOL! sorry for long winded, yes it is sloppy response...
      It should look great and be a blast to run in the end so that is all I need!

    I am sure I will enjoy the build ☺️
    I do wish the suspension and steering was a bit tighter but I do like the fact these new chassis use the TT-02 diffs, quite a few upgrade there.

I had a chance to see the MB-01 up close and was quite turned off by many things, which is why I don’t have a video on it, I avoided it. It seems like it has even more slop than the BT-01 but both are slop monsters by nature of design, a flaw if one wants a purpose built race car, but for it’s purpose and price, like you said in the comments, it will be what it is due to its purpose, an all a-rounder.
    Shims shims shims oh man, but then again, race tier cars also come with or require shims, just less and much thinner hahaha.

    I've watched quite a few videos on this new chassis, and it's bigger brother.
    I must admit, I'm liking the versatility of these new platforms..... It's a very clever piece of design, and refreshing to see Tamiya thinking 'outside of the box' for a change!
    But, versatility always comes at a price unfortunately.
    The amount of slop on these kits is not good, especially for a company that has been in the game nearly half a century.... that kind of slop really does affect the cars handling, and general performance.
    I'm also not a fan of plastic driveshafts!
    I tend to agree with your concerns about Tamiya potentially over using this chassis over multiple bodies, from a business point of view it makes a lot of sense, not quite so great for the consumer!
    That's a cool looking body mate, albeit a tad flimsy..... but Fils one actually stood up to things extremely well.
    I would love to see the original Mini on this platform, that would be superb!
    Fils BT01 actually performed really well in front motor set up, and looked like a lot of fun with a faster motor fitted.
    It's great seeing Tamiya try a few new things going forward..... probably won't purchase either myself, mainly because I love the vintage stuff, but who knows?!
    As for the weather..... don't get me started on that one matey! ☔ ☔ ☔

      It is a really neat platform and I think we will see a lot of European bodies on this chassis and more of the normal sports cars and such on the bigger BT01 chassis and the super cars and such will still be on the TT02 until they replace that.
      The slop is a issue but on mine the axle play is the worst and that is pretty easy to resolve. The rest of it is not terrible and going into I new it was not a high end race kit and my driving is all going to be ripping around in a parking lot so it won't matter to me as much. Those that plan on racing it may struggle a bit with it as it is never going to feel dialed in on a track without a good bit of work. I think for most of us they are going to be parking lot bashers and/or shelf queens so it should matter too awful much.
      I would love to see the original mini body come back out, I need a Mr. Bean car in my life! LOL! Him sitting on top in his recliner would be an epic build!!
      Fil's videos have been great on these, I have enjoyed them a lot!

I think the bigger Bt01 is going to have more of the common sports cars and stuff like that on it. I think the TT02 is still going to be around for the super cars and rally cars. Yeah, even wit the foam I would still want to back it in some shoegoo/E6000 so it doesn't crumple and crack. It is a heck of a pull to be able to get that body shape in one piece so I can why it is thin, it would have been great is they had made a second mold of just the nose section separately and you could have stuck that in behind the finished piece to have two layers in the front, a nice form fitted reinforcement. • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  4 месяца назад

      I have not gotten my hands on the BT01 yet, it may be a bit worse in the slop than this one is. I did wonder if it was going to be restricted by the width of it. By the nature of them being so versatile and re-configurable there is going to be some slop in them. they are like other from Tamiya's on-road fleet where there are not race cars, just cars that people end up racing. I don't mind a little bit of play and wiggle as I am never going to race any of them and my driving typically is messy and erratic already so a bit of slop is no big deal. The axle slop in this one is unacceptable for a newly designed kit but the linkage slop, that is just going to be the nature of a highly configurable chassis that is not race spec. I hope once you get it done and are out driving it you end up enjoying it and forget about the wiggly bits!

    • @dannyseville2543

      @AddamsPlayground while I can see the benefits of a flexible chassis, it seems we are having to sacrifice quality for it. It could be fixed with a few parts tree changes to include shims and the like given how many spares they give us already. Either that or this was made to incentivise hop ups. Maybe I'm being g a little harsh but for a new kit, I'm really disappointed.

      @@dannyseville2543 no I get it. I have built kits where I wondered why they did things in such an odd way or was just left kind of let down with the overall design of it.
