I have had this combo in my 1960 Plymouth 9 passenger wagon for about 1.5 years now. It has 3.31 gears and 255/70R15 tires (29" OD) and it runs great down the road. I can drive it like a diesel truck, keep my RPMs low. I run 1500 RPM at 50 mph, or 1800 RPM at 60 mph. Averaging 15 mpg all around right now on 87 octane.
Thanks for posting this! We had a 66 dodge d200 with a poly...loved that truck. Planning a setup like yours for a 1949 jeepster; a stock 2 barrel motor, tho.
Had a 318 poly back in the day. My forever memory is how smooth it was and how much torque it had. Notice it doesn't vibrate at all on the engine stand.
Both of those would have the LA engine. The Poly's head was more akin to a hemi head. The LA series had "wedge" heads. The LA was choked down with a very low lift cam (.390" lift) and most were equipped with 2 bbl carbs. A very few with the "Denver package" had the Thermoquad 4 bbl.
I am woefully late to viewing this video. I recently purchased a 1966 Dodge C500 2-ton farm truck. It is all original with 53k mi., It has a 318 in it with a factory sticker on the valve cover that says “Premium 318 202hp” I had to chuckle at Dodge for displaying the “202hp”, like it was something earth shattering. Anyway, runs like a top, doesn’t quite sound like yours though. Curious if you put an electronic ignition in this, and if you put hardened valve seats in...? Also, I could not quite tell what your oil pressure gauge was reading, looked like maybe 55-60lbs...? Thank you.
The big trucks would have come with a 318-3, or a commercial grade engine. Lower compression, but higher quality and tighter tolerance parts. Good engine. I do have electronic ignition in this engine, a pertronix conversion. Oil pressure when cold at high idle is between 75 and 80 psi.
@@BigJonsAntiqueMotors I have been reading up on as much as I can, and just about everyone who has the rig I have or similar says a money well spent item would be HEI. I will most likely source one, for the less maintenance. Thank you for responding back.
Weiand made that intake,it's a single plane aluminum high rise. I don't think they make them any more they sold for around 260 bucks. Jegs or Summit used to sell them a few yrs ago.
The intake is a vintage factory piece, Chrysler stopped offering the 4 barrel on a 318 poly after 1962 (I think, may have been even earlier). They are getting hard to find and quite valuable.
Offenhauser did make a single plane aluminum intake for the 318 poly, I had a intake like the one in the video, sadly I scraped it about 15 yrs ago. A buddy scored a offenhauser off a 66 power wagon for me, still have the intake, don't have a 318 poly anymore.
Since my Poly is a 1962, the 5 speed bolted right up to the block and the flywheel to the crank. No adapters required. The Jeep crowd is running this 5 speed behind 318s for off road rigs without issues, so the 5 speed was just a stock rebuild.
Yes, there are plenty of examples online of people going 0.090 inch over bore to 4.000" total bore with a 4" stroke crank to make a 402 cubic inch Poly
Twas a troll guys. 🤣 any how, better get the cam phasers changed while you were in there. Like. I build engines with HEI and points all the time. I was making the joke pointing towards the 90s 5 speed on the back k with the crank sensor hole lol. Sorry for any miss understanding, gents
Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!!! (BABBVEN LAWS )
The best motor for sweptlines in my book. They're great racing engines too and were used for that a lot in the past.

My brother dropped one of these in his 1955 Plymouth back in the day. It was a screamer and tore up a few rear axles. :)
good job
Cool setup what year and what transmission are you using
Nice!!!
Im not a pro on mopar. Was wondering what poly block means as i hear it alot. Thank you great videos!!👍
Just a marketing term from the era, really. Short for polyspherical combustion chamber.
What Transmission is That?
Is that a Big Block Stick?
Wondering about the transmission what is it what year is it from?
Had two Mopars, ‘71 Charger 318 auto, 82 Ram Sport Stepside 318 stick. Bulletproof and fun on a budget!

What setup did you need for the trans? I assume its a tr6060?
What transmission do you have behind this? I want to take my three on the tree to a 4 or 5 speed floor shift.
What engine power are you betting on? What torque? Greetings from Poland

What is the model of that transmission ??
AX-15 5 speed from a mid 1990s Dodge Dakota.
318 from the 60's
Anyone know a part number for a manifold for these bad boys? My still has the original 2 barrel on mine..
I know it's late but my 75 dart has a 2bbl on it and part number for that was 3830941

AX15, 5 speed manual from a late 1990s Dodge Dakota.

There is no crank sensor, this is a 1962 engine and distributor.
