    I had a 67 Dodge D200 that someone had dropped a 318 in along with a 3 speed stick in the floor, It was rusted thru in a couple of spots and the passenger floorboard was eaten out so I used JB Weld and sheetmeatal to repair. It ran good and had good power so I did a cheap paint job and drove it like it was. Fun truck

    In '81 it most likely came out of a Fury. Those were most common chryslers at that time in use. Full size were still getting HP 360. Midsize (Dodge Diplomat & Plymouth Fury) got the 318 in several versions.

    I got one of these it came in a 1972 coronet 4 door sedan that originally had the slant 6 but the engine blow a rod and took a large chunk out of the block!!!
    Very happy with this motor even being in such a heavy car!!! Still has performance ability and that deep-throated rumble people look for!!!
    I'm referbing the car now but may post a video or slide show when she's finished!!!
    Can't go wrong with this engine!!!

      They all want to Run.. I really believe that.. I was almost given a 318/A904 after the impossible also happened.. my Slant6 gave up the Ghost.. 300 bucks for V8 and Trans from a fellow Dart owner.. non smog 318... Mopar also lied about HP until the had to put the dreaded smog holes and EGR.. 75 I believe..
      Cheers from Southern California.. daily driver 68 Dart grandma special..

    My 92 Dodge Dakota went to the scrap yard. It was literally falling apart from rust, but that 318 was still going strong. Always started without any problems, just changed the oil every 3K miles.

      Dodge does a really good job, better than Ford i think. I have a 95 Dakota magnum 3.9 V6 and I love it plenty of low end torque. And yes, i never had a problem starting up, reliable as hell.

    An HDC equals high duty cycle. They were all made or assembled in Canada. My parents had a travco motor home with a 360 hdc in it. It got 16 + mpg had plenty of power with 4.10 full floating rear axle a 727 torqueflight and weighed 4800 lbs curb weight. I wish I'd of kept it after they died and put that motor in a ramcharger.
    But like my mom always said
    IF FORESIGHT WAS AS GOOD AS HINDSIGHT WE'D HAVE IT MADE.

    Hey thank you very much for this upload. I am just learning about these engines. I just got myself a 1979 Dodge B300 high top campervan with a 360 CI engine paired with an a-727 transmission. The smog stuff is sort of a pain. I accidentally caught my engine block on fire while cleaning it so I was forced to replace all the hoses that vaporized along with a bunch of wires from the harness. Got everything up and running it sounds good but what a mess.

    What did this 318 come out of? Where did you get the Thermoquad rebuilt?

    Just out of curiosity. How much ( including shipping) would this cost?

  • @natebridges468
    @natebridges468  9 лет назад +9

    I am not sure what this motor came out of. It was a motor and transmission still coupled together for sale on Craig's List. I was looking for a donor motor for parts only. When I saw the four barrel carb and intake I decided to buy it as it piqued my interest. I wasn't aware of factory four barrels on the 318 at the time. As we tore it down and researched the casting numbers, we realized that we didn't have an ordinary old 318. I didn't pull the cam and crank out as the cylinders were perfectly smooth and the pistons all looked great. The mains looked good so I just replaced the oil pump, timing chain, lifters, and had the heads milled and valves ground. I wish now I had gone ahead and torn it all the way down. I would love to know what cam shaft is installed. I might tear it down yet. If I get a good weekend to myself I might pull it off of the engine stand, tear it down and put new bearings and rings in it. Someone told me that these early engines had a problem with not seating the rings properly. Compression is 120 pounds on all cylinders. I think it should be stronger.
    The Thermoquad was rebuilt here locally by my machinist's father who has rebuilt more carbs than I have ever seen. He is a master at rebuilding and tuning them.
    I have yet to install it. This motor had a bunch of smog stuff on it and I took it all off. I am afraid that the Thermoquad will have ports and such that want those smog lines hooked up. I don't think I have the skill to make it run properly so I just stuck the Edelbrock on it. I am familiar with the 1406 and getting it jetted. I am close to having it running perfectly. It is very strong, but my interest is in getting my strong 360 finished so I can get it into my '71 Dart project. Thanks for the questions Mickey.

      Ernie, I haven't really considered a price. The heads are pretty valuable. I almost couldn't pry them out of my machine shops hands when I had them done. I would probably let it go for a thousand, just to make space in my shop. It would fit in your Ram. It would be pretty straight forward as you wouldn't need a computer or anything. This is pretty old school. No smog stuff, no electronic idle air control, no oxygen sensors, etc. I don't know how economical it would be though. I doubt if you could get very good mileage.

    I actually bought an 89 D250 that was gutted and the guy threw in a 318 with tranny to sweeten the deal. Got the same results of it being a mopar race performance engine like you said. Other than that it seems to be a mystery on the engine's history and origins. Spent a few hours trying to search it's block numbers and such and kept getting "Race Engine" from mopar and "Ordinary 318" from forums. Either way I too am taking all that smog nonsense off.

    • @pkranz937
      @pkranz937 6 лет назад +1

      In 1981, there were 3 possibilities: R body St Regis, R body Fury, or M body Diplomat. This same engine was used through 1984, with a change of heads (to 587's) in '83. In '85, the intake changed, and in '86, the pistons changed. From '85 through '89, no other Chrysler product utilized this exact engine. It was police - only. It never did get the TBI that Chrysler had designed for it for the '86 cars. That system went into trucks in '88.
      Halfway through the 1989 model year, Chrysler ended production of the M body at Kenosha, WI. The ELE police 318 was then given a new tour of duty: Chrysler added TBI and hydraulic roller lifters, and shoehorned it into the new Shelby Dakota.

      @@pkranz937 good info, I worked on that conversion assembly line in 89'
      Shoehorned in the Dakota 1500 units. Later when Dodge resumed V8 Dakota's, they changed the front radiator clip to accommodate a conventional fan & shroud and used the original V6 motor mount as both blocks had similar side mount castings & front/ rear block trans & front accessories holes. And upgraded EFI.

      I like the big block "B" motors. They are easier to get into cars because they are a lower deck height. I currently have a 400 in a '75 Power Wagon.
      If the motor hasn't previously been bored out, I think you can bore it and make a really strong "stroker" engine out of it. Then find a non assuming car and drop it in for a great sleeper hot rod.

    What did you time your 318 4bbl to? 8, 10, 16, degrees. BTDC?

    • @natebridges468
      @natebridges468  9 лет назад

      I don't really know at this point. I timed it with a vacuum gauge. I set it initially when I put it together at TDC. Then adjusted it with the vacuum gauge to 17 pounds. That was the most I could get. It is a little advanced, probably 8 or 10 degrees, but I am not sure exactly. I am just running it on the test stand for now.

    • @adamtrombino106
      @adamtrombino106 7 лет назад +2

      I know it's a million yrs later, but a stock smog era h/p sb Chrysler with the stock cam ( about .410 lift) and TQ generally likes 16* btdc for ignition timing. FYI You should pull nearly 20 inches of vacuum at 750 rpm with that. Compression will be 120-140psi warm engine with all plugs removed and WOT or carb removed. Oil pressure looked good. 30-45lbs at hot idle is excellent, as the h/p engines had higher pressure pumps in them from the factory. Careful carb jetting and matched metering rods are the key. Run an orange box MP electronic ignition system with matching distributor and you've suddenly woken up a rather bland 318. 1 thought though... ditch the stock iron intake with the floor jet EGR. It's garbage, and it weighs a ton, not to mention it runs too lean at idle.
