So… what I’ve been doing since the beginning of the channel? 😁 ok, I know I’ve been a little heavy on “revival” type stuff lately, and opinion pieces trying to make a point about spending money on these cars. Those videos have also gotten way more attention than (almost) anything else I’ve done. But these things come as they come. The weather’s nice, the iron is hot, and these cars keep showing up. I have a lot of different things I want to do. In fact, I just finished recording my first podcast type history episode. I don’t know that it will do well at all, but it’s something I have long wanted to try. The bedrock this channel is built on is Mopar technical guides, and specifically electrical guide videos. I will go back and forth between these things - and sometimes, I’ll make silly things like The Corndog Car Chase. I want to make stuff people will watch, but also stuff that I believe in and enjoy, and I definitely don’t want to limit myself to just one thing. Thanks for watching! Lots more coming up.
WOW! This channel just keeps getting better and better. Extremely useful information delivered quickly and clearly, with a generous helping of humor on the side!
Funny story, that’s what I started with a year and a half ago 😅 I just sorta took a long detour through primarily revivals and project videos. I’ll be doing a lot more like this.
It’s funny just a couple days ago before this video came out. I was thinking about swapping my 318 to a 360 in my 71 charger. It’s 100% stock and still has the original two barrel carb but still runs amazing!!! I figure it’s a shame to take a perfectly good engine out so I think I’m going to just upgrade a few things.. great video like always!!
I would have a hard time taking that apart too. We are replacing the 318 in Tom’s ‘68 with a 360 Magnum - but only because the 318 is smokey and tired. If it was a good runner, we’d leave it alone.
Another very useful and timely video apparently made for me again 😜. Those balancing concerns regarding the flywheel/flex plate were something I hadn’t considered yet.
Re: vibrations and externally balanced Mopar LA engines. In 1973 only, 340's received an externally balanced cast crank so their harmonic balancers and torque converters had external balance weights on them, unique to that year's production. I don't know why they thought this was a good idea, but they did it anyway. If your LA rotating assembly has weird vibration issues, check if you have mixed a pre-73 340 forged crank with 1973 340 harmonic balancer & torque converter (or older style harm balancer and/or torque conv on a 73 cast crank). All 3 parts must match and be oriented correctly or it will shake off-idle to 3000 rpm like my 340 did (above that it smooths out but will suffer an early death)
The why-they-did was definitely cost cutting, and the fact that they had already lowered the compression and output of the 340 made this acceptable. This was actually in the middle of the 1972 production run, as I understand. It’s similar to the 360, which always had a cast crank, but the weight is unique to the cast crank 340. The 318 also had a cast crank, but with the lighter rotating assembly, they were still able to balance it internally. Not so with the cast 340 and the 360. This video was mostly intended to discuss the important difference between the 318 and 360 for swapping purposes, so I did not get into the particulars of year to year changes, or the late 340. I discuss the history of the 340 in an upcoming history type video about the A-body, but it will probably warrant its own history video at some point.
Great video. I have always said the best way to spend a Saturday hopping up a 318 is to swap in a 360. A cheap easy upgrade that most people wouldn't notice even if they looked.
Oh yeah. Even the Magnum will go largely unnoticed if you hide it under LA valve covers…but I should say I do really like a good 318. Haha. They can do some cool stuff if asked correctly.
Thanks for explaining the difference between a 318 and 360! I always thought they were exactly the same except for cubic inches. I thought a lot about putting a 360 In my 318 74 cuda, but I’ll probably just keep it original and numbers matching and put a 4 barrel on it at some point . I’ve been thinking about a 4 barrel for a while because no parts stores in my area want to carry BBD rebuild kits. I actually had a set of super rare ‘Cuda 360 emblems to put on the hood scoops, but sadly, they went missing when we moved.
That was great 👍 thanks so much! You are right the info is out there on the forums but I find it doesn’t sink in when there are also so many contradicting theories/ideas etc. where I watch one of your videos and bam I get it
Very good and though you talked about the balance being different in detail but you forgot to mention why. 360 has a cast crank and the others a steel crank. Other than that you about covered all the LA points very well. Minor oversight on the crank thingy i am sure. There was a lot to cover.😊 well done. Remember its not rocket science or is it.😂
That isn’t exclusively why, but it’s definitely a factor. I don’t think of it that way, because cast crank 273 and 318 are still neutral / internal balance. The cast crank 340 and all 360s are external balance. It’s all about weight, and where that weight is.
@DeadDodgeGarage So, very good sir.. I'll add my 2cents that not all 340s were cast crankshafts, the early ones 68 -71 were steel from the factory I've had many and have one now, I've also got a 360 in my 90' Dodge truck I swapped from a 318 but now it's internal balanced steel crank in that 360 because i bought it to switch bottom end to internal balance... scat I recall was manufacturer, just a better engine that way and perhaps a lil tuffer to... yes true stock 360s are cast/external balance.... love your material!! 😍 ❤️!!
Good video. I think the lower hole on the drivers side for the block to transmission support bar is about 1/2" forward on the 360 vs 318 also. I had to use spacers between the support rod and trans bellhousing. Maybe do another with the cylinder head differences, rod differences, cams, and the different version of water pumps. I put the Edelbrock Performer intake (EGR version) on my trucks 360, and found the intake port necks down to the 318 size less than an inch from the gasket surface. I just had to gasket match the port to the 360 size, and only had to go less than an inch into the port.
That’s a good one - we learned that hole moves somewhat recently on a 340 actually. Frankly, very few cars left on the road have those braces… and that includes all of mine. So I didn’t think to mention it. There are lots and lots of little details like that to be found - I’m really just going for the broad strokes that people need to get swaps like this done successfully. There will definitely be more videos on these engines coming. As long as I’ve got Mopars and a channel, I’ll have a pile of LA engines. Haha.
I like it too. My engine color choices have gone through phases over the years. Haha. Another video I have planned is comparing all three 318s in detail - poly, LA, and Magnum.
Excellent! I’ve done a lot of this type of stuff in the past. I’ve been enjoying a summer full of revivals and project videos, but I do want the channel to be a resource that Mopar people can come back to for useful information for years to come. Thanks, Stan.
I have a 1979 Aspen R/T with a factory 360-4 w/727-3spd TF both have been rebuilt and it still vibrates like crazy! I never really could pinpoint the problem. Put a new harmonic balancer and the former owner put a new drive shaft still no change so im guessing the torque converter maybe?
That would be my guess. Either no weight on the converter or something else weird. My Demon currently has a 360 and it also vibrates quite badly. I used what was supposed to be an aftermarket LA 360 flywheel with a small weight bolted onto it, but I’m fairly sure it’s wrong.
Fully inspection cover off where the torque converter is and look at it and see if the weight is on there I had this happen I put a 360 converter on a 318 if vibrated like crazy drilled out the rivets and took the weight off with the converter in the car problem solved
there is a Mopar part# for weld on weight kit. when using a non-weighted torque converter on a 360, you get this kit, and weld the weights on it. i did this on my swap and it saved me from having to buy a new torqueconverter
Two things, torque converter bolt location on he flex plat between the Magnum and LA, and main bearings between the 360 318.. can you verify? I had to re-drill the LA to fit the Magnum torque converter. Thanks for the video👍👍
Yes, Magnum pattern does not have the offset bolt - that may have started in ‘96 or ‘97 and not at the start of the Magnum run though. Early Magnum 5.9s are still weighed on the converter, and later Magnum 5.9s are weighted on the flex plate. LA 360 and 318 don’t share main bearings. I am fairly sure that the Magnum engines are also different between the two, but I haven’t actually verified this. I will do a detailed rundown on Magnums in the future.
I had a 340 Dart in1969. Had it for 10 years. It had a small amount of coolant in the oil from day 1, and it was never fixed. What do you think was the most likely cause? Head gasket or block porosity? I wasn't much of a mechanic back then. Thanks for an interesting video.
Me be in a crafty Mopar nut, with a little work you can take the 360 crank machine it and have it put in a 340 block and you end up with a 392 after everything is said and done😁
I edited out the part where I explain that the 360 crank can be machined to fit in the other blocks. I decided it wasn’t worth mentioning in the context of this video. I’m not sure how you end up at 392 cubic inches though, given that the factory bore of the 340 is only .040 larger than the 360’s. I could see offset grinding the pins and using different rods accounting for a small amount… this is all a moot point in this day and age, where stroker cranks and matched kits are readily available that fit both blocks.
Ive got a 76 W300 with a 360 and a 4spd NP435. A couple cam lobes wiped, so I've got the engine out. Its all good now. Reday to put it back in. Haven't worked on many Chrysler V8. Have worked on about everything else. Just about every i can think of has a thin plate between the engine block and the bellhousing. Dont appear to have one for this. Theres an inspection cover on the bottom. And theres a small cover that covers the space around the starter and to rear of oil pan. Did dodge not not have one ?
That’s a Ford thing. I don’t think I’ve seen that on any other make. No, these did not use a plate like that - just the inspection cover / rock guard at the bottom, and the often missing starter shim.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I've seen them on many different brands. GM used them. Doge used a spacer for I think old poly engine with auto because crank stuck out . But not having one sounds good to me. One less thing to mess with. This bellhousing might be a bit difficult anyway. It was coming out. A groove inside on each side the flywheel rides in. Not much, maybe 1/8 inch deep. Has to turn sideways or flywheel catches. Hoping it'll goin easier than came out. Part of why I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Get it right first time and be done with it. thank you for the info.
Well, dang it! I’m not sure how I stumbled across that information years ago - probably on Allpar or similar. I have had a really good run of getting the balance weight right - until the 360 swap in my Demon this year. And in my defense on that one, the weight screwed onto it was presumed to be correct for the 360 LA, but pretty clearly isn’t.
Good break down of the situation. I wouldn't mind seeing the Magnum version of this video. One clarification I would like to know, you mention the balancing was different from LA to Mag. Does that mean you can't swap a LA flex plate and converter to a Mag and vice versa, like a lot of people will say in various internet places. Or you can't do something like using the Mag flexplate with like a LA converter.
Basically, if it’s a 318 you can use whatever combination of flex plate and converter as you want as long as there are no weights. The Magnum flex plate is fine, but you will likely have to oval out one torque converter bolt hole. 360 Magnum and 360 LA have different balance weights, and later 360 Magnums have that weight on the flex plate instead of on the converter as LAs and early Magnums did. This change came somewhere in the ‘96-98 range, but I don’t have that nailed down for sure. All of the different flex plates bolt onto any of the engines. You just need to watch the balance weight and use the right one if you’ve got a 360/5.9. The Magnum version of this is definitely coming.
Yes magnum video love the content been longing for a channel like this mopar or no car love Dakotas with the magnum 318 owned a bunch of them love la series of engines to just haven’t had much experience with them trying to get my hand on one now wether a older car or truck I don’t discriminate work io semi trucks and trailers for a living will all the valve covers also bolt on the magnum 318 thinking about cleaning the engine bay up on my current driver
I see a Police Alternate and a Thermoquad on that one engine . What did that engine come out of ??? . I've got one that's in a 79 Newport ex Texas State Trooper car with only 100,000 miles on it still runs good but car body is rusted out but I've got a 1988 Plymouth Gran Fury with a 318 two barrel ( Texas DOT package car ) that's like new . I use to buy and sell old Mopar Police cars and always wanted to put a 360 in place of the 318 ( with 360 heads ) that came in 1982 through 1989 Diplomats in Plymouth Gran Furys police package cars but never got a round to it.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Texas DPS / State Troopers had the 79 Magnums for under cover cars back in those days , bucket seats but no console and shifter on the column . Had the police package on the Magnums just like the 79 Newports they had .
Hey your video is super helpful. I have the very same situation with an original 318 on a 1973 challenger with a 360 mounted. I need to change the 4 barrel carb. You mentioned an adaptor to make the process easier. Do you know where I can find such a jewel?
Good Video Janie but I have a much needed matter fixed on my 1969 Dodge Charger. Yes, the Magnum 360 engine. I tried using the standard 318 Motor Mounts but without any luck. Engine doesn't seem to fall into place or line up with the "K" Frame. Don't know what to do? PLEASE HELP!!! Thank You
Are you sure you’re using 318 mounts? Are they bolted on the engine correctly? This should work, no problem, except for the spacing matter I discussed in this video. Been there, done that. If you like you can shoot me an email with some pictures of what you’ve got going on to Jamienoise@gmail.com
Lots of excellent info on the LA motors I never new! Probably bc I only have big blocks . Am I the only one that noticed that the teal Cummings colored LA #6 spark plug wire has left the chat? Lol
DDG is it normal not having all ur videos show up from a Y.T. search ? This is the 2nd video tonight I've watched that wasn't available to me in my previous search. Thought you should know if you didn't already know , kinda strange. Great video too.
Yes, that’s one good place to find them. One has to verify the 727 isn’t the heavy duty unit with a drum brake on the back or a fixed driveshaft flange though.
No. There really isn’t much to know about swapping a big block for a big block until you get to the external balance engines. The width difference and the different intake are notable. Not sure there is a whole video there. Plus - I usually live in small block land. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I accidentally got a 1964 Dodge witha 361. I was passively looking at slant 6 cars for budgetary reasons, so now I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the 361.
GREAT Video. Are you in my head? I'm getting ready to do EXACTLY this swap. 318 2bbl to 360 4bbl. Are the 2bbl and 4bbl tranny kick down rods the same or do I need to track down different rods to go from 2bbl to 4bbl?
I believe they are supposed to be different lengths, but the 318 rod can be made to work with a combination of bending, threading it all the way out, and in some cases extending it or adding a nut and bolt in the slot to effectively length it. Having the correct Chrysler throttle adapter I mentioned is a big help.
If i want to revuild my 360 what is a good place to get a rebuild kit? Also if I want to upgrade it what would be some good parts to upgrade? First time rebuilding an engine.
I always go for regular old FelPro gaskets, speed pro rings or whatever I can get my hands on, and ideally Clevite bearings. What upgrades you make really depend on your end goals. Usually when I’m build a 360, my horsepower goals are modest and I just want a nice street performer. A mild performance cam and matched springs are essential - and I highly recommend you buy an old Mopar Performance purple shaft cam with specs that fit your needs. OR use a local cam grinder and get a set of original lifters refaced as well. Do not buy a Comp, or any other off the shelf cam and lifters - unless you will have them checked. You almost certainly need to have this engine over bored by a machine shop, and you will then need a matching set of flat top pistons with valve reliefs. This will raise the compression to something usable. A good port job and valve job in the heads is also time well spent. There is a lot to this, but these are the basic ingredients for acceptable performance.
Hey one last question! I have a early 90’s 360 I’m going to use my intake and my hooker headers, but I would need to run a electric fuel pump with a regulator I have the sfi flexplate to the tf904 trans and I have the water pump, valve covers, intake seals does it all sound good to swap over? Would I be missing anything?
Early meaning 90-93, pre-Magnum? If so, all of that will work great, and you will indeed have to run an electric pump. I’m at least fairly sure there will be no eccentric for the fuel pump in there. Truth be told, though, I’ve never looked.
Is it the SP2P? Those are a very small runner/port, funky economy piece. It will bolt onto the 360 no problem, but you’ll definitely be leaving some top end power on the table there.
@@DeadDodgeGarage thanks for replying as long as the truck drives for a couple of weeks till I can get something better, any recommendations for down the line?
Hi, i have a 1995 ram 5.9 Magnum with an automatic transmission, I'm planning to swap to a manual, i found a manual but the only thing is that came out of a 1978 318 engine. Do you think will work? Or do I need something else? Also they are offering me the whole vehicle to do the swap. Thanks!!
Don’t do it. No part of that earlier manual swap will fit your truck. Mating the transmission to the engine is relatively easy, but the clutch setups are completely different between the two trucks - pedals are completely different, linkage from the ‘78 is incompatible (the ‘95 would use a hydraulic clutch.) Additionally, the transmission mounting, the shifter setup, and more will not be right - and that’s going to be a four speed without overdrive, most likely an NP435 with an almost useless granny low, so it’s more like a three speed. In the trucks they came in from the factory, they make good sense. In your Ram, trying to install one is a fool’s errand. Look for a stick shift Ram donor instead. If you can find the right parts, it will be great.
Love Mopars, but, what do you need to swap a 305 or 307 for a 350 Chevy? Nothing! And if you get back before the LA engine series with the Poly's,Semi Poly's and Hemi's like I collect, you need to be a full on Mopar soothsayer.
Hence this video 😅 hey, 400 small blocks are externally balanced too, aren’t they? I clearly know a lot about Chevys. Haha. I do know that GM made this stuff easy mode. One bellhousing for all engine lines at that time instead of three. The same mounts… distributors small block to big block… etc.
@@DeadDodgeGarage every time I was in the car when I was a kid I always asked my dad to turn the jets on so he would slam it in 1 gear and slam the gas and it sounded like a airplane taking off and it was so cool to sound I loved it
I did that video. Haha. It’s in my Magnum Stuff playlist. And as far as your flywheel, is this for an old school retrofit deal? If you’re trying to use a car flywheel, refer to my video Magic Trick That Shouldn’t Work from way back. If this is in a truck, buy the 90s Ram 5.9 flywheel.

I did too! But I spend way more time in RUclips studio than I’d ever care to admit (hell, I’m in it right now, responding to comments…) and the fancy, space age analytics data told me that people were skipping the intro or tuning out altogether while it rolled. In general, viewers coming to the channel seem to prefer that I get right into it. I ran a shortened intro for a while but eventually decided to just do away with it entirely.
Well, funny you should ask. I rebuilt it for my blue truck, but I just sold it back to Dave and he's going to do a big block instead. It could well be available - although I also have a Dart it could live in. If you're near enough to Aberdeen, WA to buy it and want to negotiate, feel free to email me at DeadDodgeGarage@gmail.com
Hey I got a question for ya, my water pump went out on my 5.2l magnum 1998, I see Mopar makes a water pump for a 2001 ram 1500 and ACdelco also makes a pump for my truck, should I go with the Delco or go with the Mopar, and I’m not sure if you can go 2001 to 1998, I’m still learning n goin into automotive
Some factory pumps had a removable pulley. Essentially all replacement pumps have a fixed pulley. It doesn’t matter - they should all work. I believe Mangum pumps is Magnum pumps. You should be able to go to your local parts store and ask them for a pump for a 1998, no problem. One thing though… when you loosen the water pump bolts, you will loosen the timing cover’s pressure on its gasket. It is extremely common for those to start leaking after changing the pump. I always recommend doing both at the same time. I am about to do a timing cover on a Ram on which exactly this happened. Just saying. I’ve got a video on the Magnum timing cover gasket problem if you want to check that out and see what is involved. It kinda sucks… but so does doing a job twice.
@@DeadDodgeGarage thanks for the quick reply! Wasn’t expecting that, good to know that the pumps should work, I’ll keep in consideration the timing gasket and will probably do that too. Do you recommend replacing anything other than the gasket?
@@MartyWolf-i9l Oh - you have an AMC 360. They are completely different and share nothing with these LA Chrysler engines. There were Chrysler transmissions behind some of them, but no - the bell housing pattern is totally different.

It’s a ‘73! It’s also not mine. I sold it before I bought my ‘68, and the guy has had it painted, and replaced just about everything on it at this point. All new glass, interior, wiring, etc. I am almost done building the 440 for it now.
Oh, dang! Usually when you join the live, the comments come up and there is a box for entry there! At least on mobile it always comes right up for me. If you're on a computer I'm sure it's different - I've never done that myself. But it's gotta be there somewhere!
Ok, but it was commonplace across the industry. If I recall correctly, Ford had three different balance weights on the Windsor. GM used it on at least the 400. I guarantee there are many more engines that utilize external weights.

Throwing 360 heads right on a 318 with all else stock is a bad idea, and I don’t recommend that anyone does that. Bigger valves and ports have more breathing potential, but reduce low speed velocity (where the 318 lives,) and the larger chamber reduces compression. Further modification is required.

Dude I just woke up and saw this notification!! Alright I’ll watch the video now.
You are right the info is out there on the forums but I find it doesn’t sink in when there are also so many contradicting theories/ideas etc. where I watch one of your videos and bam I get it
That’s my thinking! I learned a lot of this by reading, but it’s so helpful to at least kind of see it.
Especially when you throw kids into that equation
Excellent videos sir!
I'm lovin the fact that you explain everything so simply
0:32 Yep, I'm doing that with a Poly 318 to LA 360 myself. Moreso to get it roadworthy again then circle back later.
Man you do some Mopar engine swap videos, all Mopar videos, love the channel Jamie 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage I was think about how many of the engines are likely missing the supports by now. I'm enjoying your channel, one of my favorites!
Great information on the ,
poly to LA platform design .
I'm liking the Detroit Diesel green .
I like it too. My engine color choices have gone through phases over the years. Haha. Another video I have planned is comparing all three 318s in detail - poly, LA, and Magnum.
Enjoyed it. I’m ok with these sorts of videos. Looking forward to the next ones!
I've installed 318 heads with 360 valves on a 318 in a '76 M884 (read military power wagon), what fun.
there is a Mopar part# for weld on weight kit. when using a non-weighted torque converter on a 360, you get this kit, and weld the weights on it. i did this on my swap and it saved me from having to buy a new torqueconverter
I have done that too. I could’ve mentioned it. But buying the weighted plate is so much easier…
Intake manifold or gasket could do that too. Head gasket is possible.
Ahhhh if only I had this video a few years back when I figured this all out myself! Took me 2 or 3 weeks off and on to balance the crank on my own
Well, dang it!
Great info for the small blockers like me , Thanks

Yes, the old school valve covers bolt onto the magnum using older style gaskets and the five bolts that line up the same.
That’s my ‘79 Chrysler 300, factory equipped with the E58 police 360! It’s low miles and relatively original, and it’s a pretty sweet running unit.

Hey your video is super helpful. I have the very same situation with an original 318 on a 1973 challenger with a 360 mounted. I need to change the 4 barrel carb. You mentioned an adaptor to make the process easier. Do you know where I can find such a jewel?
Summit racing, jeggs, anywhere. There is one for an Edelbrock and one for Holley carbs. You definitely want that!
Lol

I’m not exactly sure how all that works. I’ve got almost 600 videos out there…
Good job J!
So, those early '70's era Dodge motor homes with the van front clip are a good source for the LA 360 with automatic trans?
Yes, that’s one good place to find them. One has to verify the 727 isn’t the heavy duty unit with a drum brake on the back or a fixed driveshaft flange though.
kopy
Have you done a guide like this for big blocks? Both B and RB? I didn't see one if you did.
Also… yes 👀
Can you re-use the pickup from a 360 truck engine when you swap to a car pan? Or do I need a car style pickup tube also?
You have to get the car pickup unfortunately. They are very, very different.
Awesome vid....MOPAR 4 EVER.
I also had a friend with a 66 barracuda with a 273, 235 horse. It was very fast.
@@DeadDodgeGarage yes sir pre-magnum!, thank you you make this very easy for people like me, appreciate ya.
Awesome video and information!👍
I have a edlebrock manifold that o my says something like prp 318 behind the carb would I be able to use this with a 360?
Wow!!!! I really appreciate your support and advice. Thanks again and keep up with this excellent channel 👍

Cool video!! Thanks for the info.
Can I use magnum exhaust manifolds in a 3rd gen B body?
I had some on a 318 in a ‘72 Satellite and they fit great.
do you have to do the weight if you use the cut out flex plate? if so what size is the weight ? thanks
The cut out flex plate *is* the weight. They take that cutout from the opposite side of where the weight would be, producing the same result.

Do you recommend replacing anything other than the gasket?

its seems a bit sucky they had to rely on external balancing for the crank
Ok, but it was commonplace across the industry. If I recall correctly, Ford had three different balance weights on the Windsor. GM used it on at least the 400. I guarantee there are many more engines that utilize external weights.

Throwing 360 heads right on a 318 with all else stock is a bad idea, and I don’t recommend that anyone does that. Bigger valves and ports have more breathing potential, but reduce low speed velocity (where the 318 lives,) and the larger chamber reduces compression. Further modification is required.
