Very brave to grab that plug wire. I had a miss on my minivan so just started by pushing plug wires down tight onto plugs and coil. Well, I found the miss when touching one wire nearly made me p my pants. Another time, same van, another miss but didn’t see anything initially. Great job Sir. Unfortunately its taken me 53 years to first check the easy stuff and not go right to thinking the worst.
That is EXACTLY what happened to my 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. That ticking noise started a few weeks before I changed my spark plugs at 100K miles. Then, when I was changing them, the front right coil wire just fell off into my hand when I pulled it from the plug. It was barely connected (if at all). I reconnected it adding some dielectric grease. Viola! no more ticking noise. That had been the problem all along. Now I check it ever once in a while because I don't know why it came loose in the first place. But it's been 3 months and no problems so far.
I work with a couple guys that have 14's and 15's. They both have over 200k on their truck. They didn't even disable AFM because they don't care about internet hysteria. They're both the kind of guy that changes their oil by 5k miles. I think changing the oil often to keep the carbon and combustion byproducts out of the engine oil makes the biggest difference in the longevity of the lifters. Short tripping is another thing that causes problems since full synthetic oils don't react well with that kind of driving habit. Deboss Garage tore down a Ford Coyote that the owner used full syn oils in and short tripped it a lot and there was a thick layer of sludge buildup inside the engine -- not good for modern engines with tiny passages that oil need to flow through like cam phaser solenoids and AFM lifters/control modules.

I have an 2011 suburban with 124,xxx miles. It has developed Cold engine hammering on number three cylinder. Not in the valve train. Not the coil wires. Stethoscope zeroes in on the noise below manifold in the block/cylinder. Not in the rods or mains. Sound persists until engine is at 180 deg plus. Then it’s gone. No misfire. New left bank manifold & gasket. Had a broken rear bolt. That was repaired. Oil pressure at idle hot 25-30. Warm at 2000 rpm 45 plus psi. Using Valvoline High mileage full synthetic. Engine runs strong. It sounds like a Ford diesel engine from inside the cab until warmed up. I assume this is piston skirt slap from reading other’s complaints. Questions: 1. Is this hammering destroying the engine? 2. Is there an additive that will calm this down? Rislone didn’t stop it. Lucas? Ceramic moly? 3. Do you have a recommendation? I have an extended warranty and their position is this is normal for these engines. The vehicle is immaculate and I want to keep it.
From Leo: Isn't it amazing that the electronic ignition is so powerful that it can jump a gap at the plug wire and still have enough to fire the plug? That would have never happened on a typical 60's ignition system.

Exactly what happened to mine. Me and told me to sell the truck. A bit of poking around myself and the number one wire was loose. Great vid
I respect that a technician doing his job and not being a parts changer
Thank You !!
@@WrenchingWithKenny my brother tool his van to a shop ( he is not a car guy) because it was stalling then no crank no power
The napa bolted on new battery, alternater he spent hundreds after it was still doing it
He got me to look and his battery terminals were loose 🤣
@@adammcintee4439 I personally would never trust one of those "Chain" shops . They have a revolving door when it comes to their mechanics
@@WrenchingWithKenny my brothers choice not mine
Thank you! I’m gonna give this a try on my 2018 with 49k. It’s made a ticking sound since new and the dealer never could diagnose the issue after multiple trips and days without my truck
Good luck!
this is why the customer keeps coming back, honest shop. 👍👍
Thanks so much for this Kenny, my truck was making this exact noise and I was fearing the worst with all the issues with AFM lifters.
I would never have thought to check but the #5 plug cable was loose. Popped it on and the noise immediately went away.
Your customer will be faithful to you and your work ethic Sir, not lots of people like you.
I appreciate that! Thank you so much for watching 🔧
This great mechanic- brought all of us wonderful people together just to make a comment . 👍
Questions:
You Sir are a gentleman! Thanks for sharing. What is that old saying...I am a Mechanic, what is your super power!
What you don’t see much of anymore….. HONESTY!!! Great mechanics like this one are hard to find.
Brother you are a life saver. Mine was not as prominent, figured I was screwed with a stuck lifter but it was a damn loose plug wire. Thank you!
From Leo: Isn't it amazing that the electronic ignition is so powerful that it can jump a gap at the plug wire and still have enough to fire the plug? That would have never happened on a typical 60's ignition system.
I have seen this a few times right after someone did a tune up or replaced the exhaust manifold, lol good catch.
Now that is Great customer service. He will never have to worry about staying in business
Sir! I thank you and appreciate your honesty!! 🙏🏻. God will bless you.
People could have said something in the motor and got $1,000’s of dollars.
I too have an honest master technician!!
I had dropped off my truck to him and later needed some information off of a white piece of paper I thought underneath the sunvisor. He said he would call me back. He said he couldn’t find the white piece of paper I was looking for but he found some green paper. It was five $100 bills in my console had forgotten about. Restore the faith if man kind again!!
I’ll be subscribing to your channel!
Я из России у меня chevy silverado я ремонтирую его самостоятельно
Спасибо вам за такие видео, они очень помогают в ремонте
When you originally unplugged the coil what was your purpose in doing that ? I get the idea that by doing so would force create a misfire however just the idea of doing it has me wondering how was that test originally suppose to help you ? I’m asking because I’m trying to figure out what might your next purpose had been
Not to brag , But I did noticed that right away ! You could see the wire was moving kind of freely . Thanks for the video
Yep, the moving wire drew attention to itself, after which one should readily notice the boot is sticking out more than the others.
I saw the wire shaking before you mentioned it, but failed to see the problem. good diagnosis
You are a GOOD and ONEST mechanic!👍👍👍👍👍👍
This video saved my ass today ended up being a loose spark plug I changed them a month ago and must have missed putting a wrench on it thank you so much
I'm glad I could help. I appreciate you sending a comment. Thanks for watching the channel and keep wrenching 🔧
Didn't think to check for loose bolts. Found it, drivers side front manifold bolt was 2.5 turns loose. Thanks for your knowledge. Subscribed

Thank you! Mine noise was this exact problem! Such an easy solution thank you
I wish that a mechanic that I know where I live in San Jose, which was charging me $ 3K to make an unnecessary head gasket change Would watch this video. Good for this guy.
And honest mechanic , we more like you as most make problems happen so they can rip us off. Happy New Year 2022.
It's a shame there is not more good people in this world like you. I was out of town and my 82 year old mom sent me a picture of her fan belt on her car a Toyota corolla, it was starting to come apart a couple of the ribs had separated so I had her cut them off and she drove it around the corner to a new shop that had just opened. Needless to say I have not been home yet but they charged her 849.00 dollars to put a belt on it.
Thats terrible . When you find out what work they did, I'd be curious to hear about it. Thanks for sharing your story
There are honest businessman, and there are dishonest ones which category are you put yourself in is up to you and in this case you’ve made the right choice. Unfortunately there are too many bad mechanics out there making us good ones look well not so great ….having a solid belief systemin mind is something that people notice and are attracted to anyway great show… Keep on rocking
Never saw any of your videos. It’s great to see a true technician at work. The for posting.
Thank you sir, for be a honest man, and for posting this video Mr.

Nice of you. It's quite clear you had good parents! There is a lack of integrity in this world these days.
Great Video I have been a mechanic for a long time, I have had the experience several times customer care. Thank you for a honest answer to that issue.
Thanks for watching !!
