AGAIN !!! Another "Tapping" 5.3 !! It's not lifters or exhaust.. 2nd time I've seen this..

- Is this going to be a common occurrence? This is the second time I've seen this , granted the first one was 15 months ago..
Also, the "Black Widow" package is an aftermarket package installed on GM trucks and sold by GM dealers with a factory warranty.

I owe you a huge gratitude of thanks for this video. I had a service stability system and check engine light come on at about the same time, and then my engine started tapping just like the one in your video. I was told that I had to have the engine replaced, and it would cost about $7k by a mechanic. After seeing this video, I made sure that all my coil wires were tight. Both errors went off, and the engine knock stopped.
Thank you very much. Save me $7k for engine replacement and about $3k for rental car while truck would be getting fixed.
Sometimes a good mechanic has to be a better detective to find the true problem cause. Relevence can lead you to the root cause if you ask yourself relevant questions. You did just that with this truck. Excellent job!
That is literally the definition of a mechanic. The other person is simply a parts changer.
Thank you Sir! You just saved my bro's bacon. He has a 2015 GMC Sierra and it has the same tick and he checked the spark plugs and found 1 loose one that once placed back on properly stopped the tick! Great stuff!
My 04 Z71 has 413k on it. Original engine, trans and rear. Yes I've done the rear main seal, axle seals and stayed on top of the maintenance since I got it at 178k. Gas mileage ain't what it used to be but I'm proud of that truck.
Hell yea!
Your like an auto detective, most people wouldn't have thought of that
Great detective work and trobleshooting walk thru. Your a great mechanic to follow. Thanks for sharing your tips and years of experience with us.
Subbed instantly. You sir know your shit. I'm very impressed with all of your observations under that hood. Truly watching a professional.
Couldn't agree with you more sir! Truly a professional 👏
Me toooo😂 Instantly! Love authentic people
We always called it spark jumping. Good job recognizing it
The tire wear is indicative of cranking up torsion bars or installing a leveling kit. Any time the suspension is touched it needs an alignment.
I love how detailed your investigation was. Freaking art. I wish I knew how cars worked.
So stop wishing and start Learning.
It's honestly not that hard, spend a day on RUclips and you'll find out how simple it all is.
@jellydonut360 I'm replacing a rear end on a dodge 4x4 and I keep getting my ass saved by the internet so I've been publishing video of the project.
Crazy but after getting the brush off by good mechanics I decided to just dive in.
The tool bill...ouch
Like your teachability . Very informative. Thank you.
I just bought a 1500 GMC thinking the lifters were bad, after seeing this video, sure enough all spark plugs were loose. The seller did say he just installed new spark plugs and cables. He didn’t tighten them correctly. Thanks for this video
Thanks Kenny. This video is exactly what was wrong with my 15 5.3l ltz I had no engine light, no off oil pressure or over heating. I second I heard this noise sounded exactly like mine an it was an now all is good!
The real question is? How many shops have installed lifters because of this? 😂 Sounds nothing like it but you never know nowadays….. Great video and great observation!
I have a 5.3 tore down now. 2 lifters quit pumping up and started off as a slight tapping. You can actually see the difference in the tops of the 2 pushrods where they were sloppy against the rocker arms. Sometimes it really turns out to be the lifters…
@@shadoughbanned I have done so many of the lifter jobs on GM AND Chrysler products too, Starting on a 5.7 Hemi pretty soon. If it fails silently, Lifters it is. As soon as it ticks, the cam is wrecked. On GM its usually an AFM lifter. On Ram 5.7 its usually intake cylinder 3. Which is not MDS (AFM) lifter. On both manufacturers cylinders 1,4,6,7 are the deactivated cylinders.
Rainman ray would've figured it out. Go watch his videos. He's a genius at this sh*t.
I’ve had to coils go out on mine and paid the dealer a good bit to replace them. Something tells me I got screwed.
@@petemoore8923 Dealer screwed you? No way. That never happens. Car dealers are nearly as honest as lawyers.
You are one great mechanic. 👍
That ticking/snapping is unique ..I knew what it was as soon as I heard it ....

got a ticking 5.3 out in my driveway! Thank you for the tip, I saw your first video about it but was busy and didn’t end up watching it back then. Will be going out to do the quick fix now!

Thank you .A lot of help.Thats why my truck was missing .Would not start good on hot weather.
I got a kick out of the smile on your face when you opened the hood. (Yep! ! ! ! ! ! I know what that is, , , , , )
As soon as I heard it , I knew what it was !!! It's a distinct sound that's etched in my brain lol !
I think you are honest but but some of them would act like it lifted or something and they did charge all that not done nothing
What a great video!
Very informative
Process of elimination as my dad always showed me to work on my cars!!!
Great video, Kenny.
I’ve been problem free engine wise (knock on sheet metal) on a 2011 Silverado with an AFM 5.3 and I’ve been running corn squeezins (E85) for the majority of the last 2.5-3 years (huge cost difference in CA). I’m about 3 oil changes from 500K on it (miles). In my experience I believe that a large percentage of AFM issues are related to oil quality, change interval and treating changing the oil like surgery. I always change it hot, and I wipe down everything remotely close to an opening and make sure things like funnels etc are clean and use new or laundered rags. FWIW too, this guy is great, with his honest attitude and savvy he’s going to have to disappear to retire 🤣
2015 Chevy Silverado with the same "Tapping Noise" with a the feeling of a misfire with no codes. I changed my spark plugs and wires about a year ago. This issue started about 3 months ago and thought the worse. Just found this video and went out and checked the wires and found the same issue. Thank you for posting this. My conclusion is that the metal prong inside the wires boot is lose.
This is exactly my noise! The dealer said it takes 3 weeks to look at it! I'm about to go over there and check my coil! You sir earn a new sub!!
Thank you !! Let me know what you find !
Check for broken manifold bolts as well. Had 2 rear broken ones on my 2014. Kenny has other vids on that diagnosis. Thanks Ken!!
Great fix! Wish he was my neighbor 😅
Judging from the way that sheet metal was pushed back, I would say that the front bumper was replaced at some point in time. And, it looks like, a front end collision may have thrown the tires out of alignment. I would send him to a frame shop, to at least have it set up and measured. If either frame rail has been mashed or swayed or has an out of level condition. It will affect the sai, steering access inclination. (Steering wheel returns to center.) Which is all three, tow, camber, castor, set properly. Any one of those three, can cause excessive tire wear. I've also seen in the past, where the alignment shops have cranked up the torsion bars. To create the illusion that the frame is straight. And don't think just because you have a big Chevy truck, that you have a heavy duty frame on there. That is not the case at all. The frame on those trucks is just enough to get it down the road. There's nothing special about them. They're pretty much at one size fits-all program.
Definitely looks hit.
Lol. Just good enough to get down the road
Or just rotate the tire more often before you buy a new frame
@@truckingoover ... You won't have to replace the frame. They're pretty workable. As long as they're not rotted out in the seams. A good frame and alignment shop with a good measuring system be able to straighten that puppy back out no problem. And if you do a return of cost benefit analysis on it, you're not just saving tires. You're also saving ball joints tie rod ends shocks and brakes. Brakes are the most important. Because you want the brakes functioning on all four corners the way they're supposed to. The biggest part of that is making sure that the wheel is where it is supposed to be.
As a former Mr Goodwrench, service technician. I would hate for you to reach down for that brake pedal someday, and it not be there.
I bought a brandnew 2018 Chevy 1500 LT. 4 yrs ago. First set of tire wears are almost the same, front driver side tire is more bald than the other side. Tire people telling me, do you always turn left??? Hahaha, but yah he made me believe it. Truck is my daily ride, route always more with left turns. Lol. More frequent alignment and tire rotations prevented the obvious wear on one tire.
Great video! Thanks!
Excellent video, great content , your sharing of experience is worth thousands of dollars!
Your like the Sherlock of diagnosis, that can save you and your clients a lot of time and money. Great job.

Real master of deduction 💯I got a 2017 that gives me that Shutter, misfire, loss of communication(I replaced master control switch haven't fixed it) Harsh tire wear after a front end colission.
The coil wire happened to mine. Slight rough idle and hard to hear tick with the purge valve up front. Remembered the earlier video and got it. Also the tip with coil pack saved me too!
great video! thanks for the info
I just subscribed because Kenny knows his stuff!!!!!!
I got 270k miles on mine. Been tapping for at least the last 100k. I took off heads (had leaking head gasket) , did VLOM mod and re seated the valves. New guides, and sanded the heads to .001 with a piece of glass and sandpaper. Cam was good, lifters were good. Been 5k miles after repair and all is good. Crazy what these engines will go through..
Yes they are way more durable than any Dodge or Ford engine today. they are not 800HP flashes in the pan, they are meant to last you ten years or more, just like the 1st gen small-blocks. I'm not nuts about too much aluminum but these seem great. I have a 2011 I got last year and it's beautiful, a Vortec head engine. they all seem to have a low knock when started, not from lifters, it's lower frequency in tone. could be related to the variable valve timing (?) but it seems to go away and not cause any issues. the tradeoff is a superb engine that will perform and last a very long time. I got my 1st mechanic job in 1984...

Ive had my 2008 Chevrolet 4X4 for 7 years and it rurn me into mechanic . 4.56 gears , beefed up transmission with Teflon pads 3 to 4 pin , heavy vales job. Rebuild 5.3 with big cam, springs lifters . 430 hp and just put new coils , airmass flow, plugs , wires , o2 , map, evap , radiator, fans , larger transmission cooler , new A/C , heater coil , head lights, belts , pully , door controls , fuel pump.
AWSOME JOB!!
my 02 Tahoe LT had the lifter tick. good to see GM has taken care of it 😄
Its not the lifter, HE SAID THAT IN THE TITLE OF THE VIDEO!!!
Very interesting diagnosis.
My 09, 5.3, barely started ticking and dealer replaced Cam and lifters at 4 years 364 days, under warranty, 60k miles. Didn’t tap that bad. Technician said he replaced lifters with LS7 lifters. 135K miles and no problems. Been using Mobile 1 since day one.
Ls7 lifters? I'll keep that in mind if mine ever fails.

I recently fixed a ticker 2007 silverado. It was a loose sparkplug i can literally see it moving up and down as the cylinder fired against it . . crazy! Tightened spark plug and fixed the problem
Happened twice to us too. The Chevrolet dealer said they fixed our rig. Turns out they put in the old parts that we just ordered and she got to Arkansas to have the lifters fail again. We got a new engine. Hate chevrolet.

Great video
Great job 👍
Awesome video!
Just got an 05 avalanche from a friend with that ticking.. will have to check that wire.. thanx for the vid brother
Check out the comments on this video & the other ticking video. Other techs had interesting finds on their vehicles. Thanks for watching & keep wrenching 🔧
Very interesting! Thanks
Need more mechanics like you ken good work
I dont know this man's prices, but no one pays for knowledge, we want things done for cheap, but also not to be taken advantage of. Kind of a catch 22.
really cool, love to see mechanics ask why, rather than just fix n go.
5.7 never let me down nor missed a beat
Great video.
Great video!
cold start rough idle can also be the high pressure investors as well its covered up to 100k miles had it happen to my 2017 silverado
Man this is a great video
Just had the same plug wire come off on our of our customers truck today. Found it quick as I've heard that arc sound many times in the past with mouse eaten plug wires and such.
5.3s notorious for broken GM exhaust manifold bolts. I had one a few years ago and replaced them all with stainless . I believe there are kits out there
There is also a company that makes a bracket front/back L/R that wraps around the ends of the exhaust manifolds & draws them in on the gasket. It works well until the gasket is too deteriorated.
Nice looking truck!
U1510 sets when the shutter actuator takes a dump. U1510 is LIN BUS and the shutter has LIN BUS line to it. Replacing the shutter resolves the issue.
Hay u do a very good job thank u
Wow. Excellent.
I've seen this multiple times in person, Same white to.
I've had the same thing happen on my 2018 Silverado V6 and 2018 Camaro SS. I don't know if it is the strength of the spark or what, but it has happened various times. Thanks for your videos.
This was a good video to keep on the back burner for the oil “I seen this RUclips video once”
Then reach down and plug it in with the lightning pack still connected😂
Yup, wires coming off is not a super common issue but it does happen enough for a TSB!
There's also a TSB for the radiator shutter wire getting pinched, and needs to be rerouted, or replaced if rubbed through.
People are nuts. as soon as I buy a used vehicle I throw money at it. right away I first changed my plugs, wires and all the grounds which are an issue on these. then I popped in a thermostat and a new master switch for the power windows. and on it goes.. ordered tires from Walmart 😉
my 2003 Tahoe has an additional AC compressor belt and tensioner. Both wear quickly because of the location. When the belt looses resilency and tensioner get rusty it sounds like a valve tap.
Guess i will check this once go back to work monday. See if that causing the ticking noise.
I have an F150 with a 4.2 V5. It had a hydro lock and afterward developed a ticking sound. Turns out the rod was bent and the big end was turned just enough to kiss the piston skirt.
Great videos. Subbed.
This is obviously a common problem. I had that exact same problem with my 2014 Sierra sle 1500. Also on a 5.3 liter engine and also the same cylinder. I knew exactly what the problem was as soon as I heard it, as this happened 3 or 4 times. I am pretty sure that the issue is that the wire is just a little too short and loosens from tension.
I recently found out that what happens is the boot is such a tight fit , that the air gets trapped inside and with heat , if the air doesn't come out on its own , the expansion from heat forces the boot off.
GM likes tight harnesses. The things they do to save a penny. Either that or their engineers need to learn about wiring.
@@WrenchingWithKenny maybe that is what happened to my 2014. I changed the plug wires a month ago, and a couple weeks ago one popped right off on me(cylinder 5), and found a second one that was also coming off. i was using aftermarket plug wires and thought maybe it was the wires themselves, but if this is happening even with OEM plugs.......
I'll check today
Dude, I learned something, thank you!
BTW, what brand and model of frames are those glasses?
Had this happen on my #7 on my 5.3L as well. Misfire only happened at high speeds and was random but not enough to trigger a code. We thought it was the transmission slipping when accelerating. Honest transmission shop owner drove it and in 1 min said “this is not a transmission, but i have a hunch”. Took a look under the hood and found it, Plugged it back in and hasnt been a problem since. Guy refused to let me pay him.
My 08 5.3 has 180k and has been a good work truck. Tows over 5000 lbs daily
Dam😅
Thanks bro
I have the same code on mine, and it reads misfire too. I'm going to check that out.
Eric O at south main auto just replaced one of those shutter assemblies and it was a pita to do.
The scanner creates another genius !
Back in 16 I got a 13 GMC with 10K on it put a little 6K on it and a dod lifter did indeed fail. Found out it had pistons rods and bearings done just before I got it Never knew why and far as I ever found out or was able to tell it was not a abused truck I got rid of that POS soon after I got i back Thankfully it was still under warranty
Big trucks and SUV that take 0w-20, I live in a warmer climate all rear round and use 5w-30 instead and seems too work a lot better. For example 2022 BMW x3 takes 0w-20 but it’s never reached below 50 and 5w-30 seems to make the engine smoother and quieter
I have a 2018 z71 just had trans replaced luckily under warranty no charge 121.000 miles i dread motor doing tick
Sweeeeeeeeet

I like how thorough you were with your investigation. I'm a roofer and I do the same type of thing with roof repairs. I think you need some work on your conclusion drawing though 🤣 the hood could have easily just been taken off for better access, looks ECT and the truck could have more easily been jumping another vehicle vs needing a jump. Good work though! Will watch more for sure.
I have had the bolt retainer clip on the steering shaft pull the plug wire off if it isn't turned to one side a bit, it happened the last time it got a tune-up, it was the wire behind the one you found loose.
My 2017 Silverado had the same problem it got pulled off multiple times before I figured it out that it was the clip on the steering shaft
I've got a 5.3 that did that, it ended up being the o ring that seals the oil pick up tube to the pump. The o rings degrade from heat.
Awesome score, 300.00 diagnostic and 250.00 in repairs R/R electrical wire.
Man gotta love mechanics
Jim jab you have to remember, that scanner cost $5000.00 so there's a reason mechanic's are expensive.
The shutter function isn’t for dynamics. It’s to help the motor get up to operating temperature faster
I had a rattling noise, no codes that sounded just like it was under my driver's seat & would happen on a smooth road, rough road, while in gear but when I put it in neutral it would go away!
It would never happen when a Tech Test Drove it!
Found out it was a loose passenger side hood bolt on my 02' Blazer ZR2 4x4. Funny how these noises can travel.
I'll add one to the mix...
If you park with the nose up ,like my neighbor was because of his driveway, the oil pump is not happy about it after a while. We listened ,we scoped ,he took it to places ,they did the same, nothing...
Randomly he noticed it wasn't quite as bad when he parked turned around, nose down.
within a day the noise was gone, that's at least 40,000 miles ago the way he uses it.
So just one more random tick thing to be aware of.
I have a new 2022 Silverado that does this on my inclined driveway, I now back up the drive to park and no ticking.
Wish my ticking on my 6.0 in my H2 Hummer was a plug wire coming loose. Mine is those stupid ass rusty exhaust manifold bolt heads that break off. That is a nice a Silverado, that color and whole package is exactly what I want eventually.
Good call on that engine noise. As soon as you lifted the hood I could hear it sounded more like a "snapping" noise like a bad plug wire I guessed. But you showed the loose wire!
WOW, do owners actually put 0w-20 oil in these engines like it showed on the oil fill cap!? I never go below 5w-30 in mine. Auto manufacturers are sacrificing our engines life in the search for higher CAFE Fuel milage numbers to me Regulation and impress the buyers.
Most people really don't know anything and let shops or quick lube place change their oil . Most shops or QL places will use what the manufacturer recommends unless the customer requested different.
If the receipt shows one weight , and the vehicle calls for another , then that's a potential claim if something were to happen to the motor . Especially in NY where I spent most my life . The DMV doesn't play in that state . If a customer files a complaint with the DMV and says , let's say , that their DOD lifter failed (common failure) because the shop used the wrong weight oil, the DMV will investigate and they could hold the shop liable for tge repair!!
My Rav4 hybrid uses 0w16. INSTANT oil pressure
My grandpa worked for Chevrolet for 42 years. That’s all we have ever owned. I replaced my engine at 100k miles because of the 4cyl crap. Blew. New engine started tapping. Changed spark plugs and coils got it to stop. Deleted the 4cyl mode and never again. I will never buy a chevy after 2008. I will never own one again. My dad has a new trail boss and I bet he will regret that.
That's spark jumping. That communication code is from the misfire. Maybe he jumped someone else. I think maybe you worry too much. Clear the codes and see what happens
My 98 silverado with a 5.7 just did this last week on cylinder 7
Happen in Mexico 2015 4.3L Spark plug wire came loose, misfire on hard throttle.
I called it before you even looked under the hood 😂
