who has a 3D printer in their home shop for making parts? only Sam does! very self-sufficient ... sewing parts, fabricating the hard dodger from scratch... have you ever felt like there was a problem you couldn't handle? Sam, I really do admire your problem solving abilities... so confident
Hi! I'm a Master Mechanic and I wish I could have a few hours with your engine but I live near Salt Lake City Utah. I see a lot of effort on your part to get things straight...cudos to you Sam...but I also see a lot that could be improved. When you're out in the Atlantic you have to think of parts like that as aircraft parts. It must be correct 100%. Good luck in your adventures Sam. Grandpa Steve in Utah.
I just love watching these daily vlogs. It really makes my day. I'm pretty young(23), and its always been a dream of mine to get a sail boat and sail with my dad down to the Keys or where ever for that matter. He was in the Navy for 25 years and sailed when he was a young man. These videos always inspire me to keep that dream alive! Thank you Sam!!
I’m enjoying your progress mate. Well done. Not sure if you know or anyone else has suggested, but it’s a good idea to coat your 3D prints in epoxy in some cases, especially for your composting head funnel. FDM 3D prints will allow liquid between the layers(and in that case stink quick!) Similarly the ones used outside of the boat will degrade less quickly as it will stop water ingress between layers. It also makes the parts stronger.
Using ballast to heel a sailboat like that will also pull your keel off the bottom if you run aground, the further you swing the boom out the more your boat will lean. Every sailor should know that trick and have a bag on board just in case.
I know it might seem obvious but people are going to wonder where you went when you are not uploading for 20+ days. Might want to mention how long it will take so people who aren't familiar with the times involved don't freak out. I look forward to the series!
I used to tie a string to a tool and drop it in the water as close as I could to where I dropped the other tool. Then slowly swim down alongside the string keeping my fins up and not disturbing the silt below. Then I would look for a hole and stick my hand in it. Or grab the end of the string and probe for the other tool. Saved many tools this way.
Sam you do great things to learn how to do things properly time it takes patience is the key a strong ruler will help don't do everything twice when you could get away with it the first time
Sam, Looks like you are getting very close to being ready for departure. I am going to miss your daily videos. I want to wish you all the best good luck for a safe journey. 🤗🇺🇸
Me too! I'm doing work on my new (to me) sailboat everyday and these days whenever it gets too hot or I'm tired I stop and watch his videos to re-motivate me.
Your energy and resourcefulness is amazing. I get exhausted just watching you. I could never imagine all the little improvements that you take on. Thanks for sharing.
My neighbour in northern Ontario Canada has Starlink but he's not using any ground station . We barely get one bar on out cell phones. His starlink is Geo-Locked now but before the end of the year they will have mobile units so Trucks , RV's, Boats, Planes and other things can use starlink anywhere on the planet.
I'm terrified of the water and and can't swim, but I find your videos very interesting and since I started watching you I've learned so much about sailing.
Love that 3D printer. What a handy thing to have. I restore vintage motorcycles as well as boats. What type (model?) is your 3D printer? Is your model overly expensive?
In regard to the cut-out in the mast bolt-rope channel being in the wrong place for your application: that happens sometimes. I've had to modify spars with cover plates and relocated "windows" - just work carefully and you'll be fine.
offshore your v-berth WILL be very bouncy, dropping 3-8' at a time, so yes, your head will levitate if you don't tie it down! good luck on this next adventure. Cheers,
It's easier to just go buy a new tool than muck around in the mud. Much easier. But it's the principal of not losing it. I've spent a long time finding stuff that went overboard. Always felt it was worth the effort. Next time you pick up a found tool, you remember recovering it.
Your boat is looking good Sam can't wait to see you actually on the water that's cool be safe out there sailing my friend. From Ray Garrett Roseville California USA
Wow! 😲 There are a bunch of really cool inventions, this time! 😃👍 At most I am impressed about your 3D prints! But it reminds me, I really belong to an older generation... 😂 But the two inch long bolts in the headroom over the bunks, just covered with a netting makes me really sorrow! 😲 In heavy weather it could become a bit dangerous, i guess... Also the shades for the side windows I like, even if the look a little bit like country jail! 😜👍 Success! Can´t wait for more!
ceramics are pretty awesome minus the brittleness. Like you said never pry. Never mention prying near them. Never think of prying with them as they are sensitive and chip! I had a ceramic knife that way. Incredibly sharp though.
10:20 look for a “mast gate” insert for your mast type. It allows the slugs to slide all the way down through the opening and to the bottom of the gooseneck.
Dude, you were right across the Neuse from me. (Clubfoot/Mitchell Creek). Lived in Oriental in ‘03! S/V Sun☀️Catcher. And now you’re in Scotland 🏴, one of my faves! Will you return to ENC?
It’s nice to cover the wire channel in the ceiling corners with that black mesh fabric, but did cutting out that channel reduce boat (top deck) strength at all?
I believe that’s actually secondary to the auxiliary proposition of the corollary according to my 1/2 inch thick book and Murphy’s Law and other reasons why things go wrong. I believe the second corollary is more to the point; if something falls it will fall into a position that’s most difficult to reach. Now on a boat that could be a lazarette that’s overflowing and you drop a bolt in and it bounces all the way to the bottom so you have to empty every last thing out to find it.🤣😂
Sam, were the clothes pins on your electrical wires (seen in your Live stream after you arrived in Hawaii) actually holding together the wires, or was it just a handy spot to keep them? Very random question 🙊😂
Always great projects to make one think of possibilities not yet on most boats. You should be getting patents and creating a “Sam Holmes” line of 3D printed products. I was wondering if you ever thought of putting those tiny packets into your little canisters that are used to prevent moisture from damaging food or other non-food products. They come in packages of 100 or more. In the old days, people would put chalk in their tool boxes to remove any humidity. Some are small enough to fit the engine parts. Others remove all the oxygen in the case of food to prolong shelf life. I use them both on kayak camping trips. They have pellets that absorb humidity for non-food and for food products.. They prolong the life of dry goods. I also found that “Boeshield T-9:rust & Corrosion protection/waterproof lubricate” beats WD-40 in most cases in the home and on the water. Also, “Blade & Bit: cleans saw blades, router bits & and other cutting tools” is a good product to have on hand. Comes in handy cleaning engine parts too. The T-9 also is great to use on engine parts. Tips gleaned from watching the tear down and rebuild of 2-stroke and Diesel engines. I learned about this T-9 via a RUclips live aboard sailing couple. If you want the link, let me know. I can find it for you. His tip made for a far better cleaning and lubrication of the sump pump too.
Hey, are you getting your food supplies ready too? Would be neat to see those preparations too. Will you be vacuum sealing? Dehydrating? Going with canned? Shakes? You are making such great progress.
Why didn't you finish the stanchions at your yard? Now you going to have sand the edges and install the stanchions in the water... maybe it was a time thing?
Sam My Man -- I am sooo stealing your upgrades whisker pole mast track setup. Brilliant dude. You never cease to amaze me. BTW. Erie Canal opens in 48hrs. Keep an eye on your 6, I’m coming to party with you bro. LoL I splashed yesterday and finishing up the list and doing a hardcore shakedown Monday-Tuesday to Detroit and back. Fair Winds Sam !!
I bet those SpaceX things won't be suitable for small boats. Even the fixed dishes are quite large and draw a lot of power. Presumably that will still be true for boat / truck versions and they'll need to be motorised so they can rotate and swivel, probably mounted in a dome of some kind.
For sat comms, check out an INMARSAT BGAN terminal. It will give u a broadband global area network. Should allow u to upload videos, but might be cost prohibitive.
Does your battery monitor screen light pulse? I think I bought the same monitor off of Amazon. The intensity of the screen pulses. Not sure if that indicates a problem or not.

I find myself appreciative and slightly jealous of the ease in which you Fab and acquire parts and stuff!
Sam, those little pots for your spare engine parts really sedates my OCD. I love them. It’s too perfect.
At 16:05, your Sailrite sewing machine is a beast! That view really shows how strong the components look. It sounds pretty beastly too. I want one!!
Idk if you’re plannin on it but a video of how you plan your route would be cool
I’m enjoying your progress mate. Well done.

This must be the worlds first glow-in-the-dark winch handles :) Awesome!
It really is amazing how you can perform any task with not only one hand but either hand equally!!
You’ve gone 3D printing mad!!! Great to see it coming together. Keep up the good work.
thanks mom!
I have to say Sam.. I have watched many people on RUclips but you are the only one I will continue to watch. You're awesome!
Using ballast to heel a sailboat like that will also pull your keel off the bottom if you run aground, the further you swing the boom out the more your boat will lean. Every sailor should know that trick and have a bag on board just in case.
If you have an extra sail on board in a bag you are set. Just put a couple spare anchors and whatever else you can find.
I know it might seem obvious but people are going to wonder where you went when you are not uploading for 20+ days.

I bet Columbus wish he had Sam on board.
Sam, Love your videos. You exemplify the can do attitude. Keep em coming.
I realize their passion projects but Watching you overhaul the boat and remodel your shop makes me feels sooo lazy! LoL
Dude, I want a glow in the dark plastic torch.
So cool to see all your resourcefulness in doing these boat projects.
Sam didn't refit his boat to sail around the harbor - things are about to get real
He said he’s going on a trans Atlantic soon.

Nice video as ever Sam. If you ever decide this RUclips business isn't for you then you've already got a good sideline in glowing winch handles 👍
Wow, Sam lost the beard without a comment :). Now he looks 12 again LOL.

The porthole shades are genius “pickle marine” products ?
Getting ship shape.
Maybe seals on screws to wall with dessicants
on engine parts
avoiding rust.
I always appreciate Sam’s commitment to getting the shot even if it means making the work that much harder (with one hand). 😆
I just assumed he always worked with one hand? It’s what sets him apart.
Hard work and a high IQ = this guy.
Exactly why I watch.

May I suggest investing in a GoPro head mount so you can use both hands.

In regard to the cut-out in the mast bolt-rope channel being in the wrong place for your application: that happens sometimes. I've had to modify spars with cover plates and relocated "windows" - just work carefully and you'll be fine.

Throw magnets in your spare engine parts containers, mount a metal plate somewhere, then you can stick them anywhere, as opposed to being screwed in
I really want to get a sailboat but I'm worried I wont know how to put it all together haha
Boats near ready, clean shaven, now your near ready, now if only the worlds near read. Remember, 3 for you and 1 for the boat.

Not sure what material you're using but just be aware that pla degrades in the sun pretty quickly.
So there’s an Ana out there. Is that changing any plans?
Look at the app Luck GRIB for iOS. Works with iridium go.

Can you epoxy over 3d printed parts?
Yes
