I like that Audi A2, can take 4 adults easily comfortable, and not a bad trunk space
The Insight is a legend. I'm quite happy with mine. He forgot to mention that it's a stick-shift, which is exceedingly rare for hybrids. It's also all-aluminum like the Audi. Engineering-wise, it was Honda's second most exotic car after the NSX. They were built in the same plant in Suzuka.
Or just buy a second hand Fiesta.
I had a roadster for three years. Cost me £3.3k to buy with 30,000 miles on the clock. Sold it 3 years later with 65,000 miles for £3.5k (appreciating classic). I only ever needed to service an MOT'd it whilst I owned it. It's so light it didn't even need a new set of tyres in 3 years and would give at least 45mpg regardless how you drive it. Great car (so long as you get one that doesn't leak). They're like a go-kart to drive and so much fun!
Jonny ended up buying that Insight - twice! He still owns it and the car now has 327,000 miles on the clock.
The little A2 has grown on me tremendously. I used to not like it at all, but now I recognise that it is genuinely brilliant and looks rather adorable.
The Insight is also brilliant in every way, no question about it.
The Roadster I am not massively keen on, but considering how many are still on the road, I would wager it is rather good as well.
That insight is still on the road as of now with 319k miles!!!
My goodness. Price of fuel taxes and insurance is ridiculous in the UK!
Insurance for young drivers is a joke... My s40 2.0d cost nearly 3k to insure my 1st year and that was with a box. now on my 4th year tho and is only 500 a year.. at least now insurance is way less than fuel cost
Yep, cheapest insurance I could find for me (21 year old male in london) was an old skoda Fabia for £4000 a year. I was so infuriated I decided to just do my CBT and buy a Honda CBR 125, which I insured for £750. Honestly if you live in London, it's the cheapest and best way to travel.
it is more worse in india
@@CheapskateMotorsports at least you have insurance for motorbikes, and your life is way better if you compare to Brazil, here things are really hard to suatain
@@lucas_bacchiegaoli I should explain, insurance is mandatory in the UK, you aren't allowed on the road without it. But I would never compare the UK to Brazil with its extreme level of corruption and crime. For instance: insurance probably isn't going to matter to someone who probably commits way bigger crimes on a daily basis: "lemme just get your insurance details sir" *gets shot*
I owned a Smart Roadster, they're excellent little cars
Let's look at some retro content!
I'd rather have crippling debt than an a2
Both the motor and finance industries need guys like you.
@@voncoconut5293 never financed anything in my life
@@HAYDNBBH Well, you're the guy who mentioned crippling debt. Either way, the cost of your ego is high.
I like the a2
I still don't get the depreciation argument. Sure, if it's absolutely massive and you're buying a car so expensive it's an investment like a house but at the end of the day a car is an appliance. You don't sell your dishwasher off after you fancy a new one and expect to get 80% of the value back either.
It's not an investment, but in financial terms you have to treat it as one. If a company buys a car as a tool of operations (e.g. delivery car), they will have income and expenses associated with it, so they very much care about depreciation as the biggest cost. For private buyers it's very hard to quantify any income originating from owning a vehicle, however the alternative costs (public transport) are known, and on top of that there is probably some economic utility originating from the personal mobility offered by the car. Now if you are the kind of person, for whom that utility offsets the sum of depreciation of a new car, you are probably well off in one bought from the dealership. However, for some that utility offered on top of the alternative transportation methods is marginal, therefore they will look for cars with very low running costs, otherwise it wouldn't be worth it for them: they would ride a bicycle, take the train or just walk.
For one, a good car is definitely more than an appliance, but that is of little importance this time.
And on the other hand, they are massively expensive to buy. Most often the most expensive thing to own after a home. You don’t really want to loose that much money every few years.
I tend to say that owning a car for a long time and taking care of it well are the best way to save money in that respect (the first sentence coming into some importance there after all), but I am definitely not the average owner when it comes to that.
Always entertaining. Thanks Jonny. Thank you Fifth Gear.
Love that Smart sportscar 😍😍
I just have a transit Connect that is very economic, fast enough, drives nicely, and great when you drive alot
When was this aired originally?
Video looks like it's 10 years old
But it's still great I'm not complaining it's lovely
All I can hear is the Love it or list it music
In America I’ve never seen the Audi or the smart 😢
Because they've never sold here.
Simon Liu dua Ik 🙄😂
My 2005 civic still runs like new and throws 40mpg at me, couldn't want for more as a daily runner.
40MPG is nothing
So running an old car saves you money. It's a revelation !
To claim that these 3 cars are the cheapest to run is just ridiculous. Old cars like a Ka,Fiesta,Corsa,Micra,Polo,Panda,Argo,Civic,Jazz etc are much cheaper, newer and more reliable cars to run.
this was ages ago
It’s like u don’t know what Honda is
@@originalpadoru MK1 Ka is more reliable
I never buy cars that cost me more than 500 euros. If I can drive around in them for two months/2000km, I drive a bargain. :) My latest utter success was an '04 VW Polo I picked up for 500. Served me well for 2.5 years. Sold it for 365 Euros. :) Bought back a VW Golf MK4 2.0 for 350 euros... I've owned it for a month now, 2000 km already. No problems whatsoever. Wish me luck. :) My girlfriend likes depreciation and drives a newly bought Fiat. :) Well... I like to compare prices with public transport rates. That helps.
Buying a new car might be financial suicide as Jonny makes obvious (and most of us already know).
But without those people determined to have the newest models, cost conscious buyers further down the road wouldn't have choice of so many pre-depreciated motors.
There's so much more to choose from then these 3 if your savvy.
What about the Suzuki wagon r 2000-2006
I´ll go for the Insight 1! :-) Oh wait a second...
Where's the Mitsubishi mirage?
Honestly smaller modern cars like Swifts etc dont really depreciate now. Whod suggest buying a used AUDI! lol gee wizz fifth gear do you hate your viewers or what
They should update this video. I think today Toyota aygo and Honda vits will be the new cars for low cost
Who’s here from LateBrake Show?
My favourite motoring show.
It's been a pleasure being the 420th like...
What an odd choice of 🚗 cars... all hard to find & sold in low numbers
This is an old video

Interesting thing is,all these cars (possibly not the Smart) are seen as cult classics now.
The Smart is becoming a proper classic though
Get a Saab
Come on even my Rover 75 gets better fuel mileage than a 9-3 they're not exactly in the cheap to run category
God no.
Jonny Walker then ur not a car person
ShroomWalrus actually they have stopped depreciating a 9-3 2.0 aero good condition could cost £1500 23mpg urban 37mpg extra urban and around £2500 insurance
@@unkonwn5390 not a car person because I don't like a saab? You couldn't be more wrong. You really couldn't.
