      Totally agree your bang on, in the days of over paying anyone buying any of these cars around 2 grand is just buying a heap of trouble..As someone between me and my wife we've had 2 minis a late 56 plate R50 cooper & a R56 10 plate cooper S. The build quality etc on the 1st was rubbish the 2nd didn't improve it involved backwards as in it was twice as bad. Minis are just so over priced crap and I wouldn't have another , but they do drive well just drop to bits . The Alfa I've had that 1.9 CDTi Engine in a 57 plate Astra Elite & my 09 Saab 93 sportwagon and other than EGR valves both were brilliant , even when EGR coaked up it made no difference on performance just black smoke lol.

    Audi TT lovely cars, which incredibly they made it look even better with the newer models. ❤ And back in 2004 I bought new a Leon Cupra R 225bhp. Still have it today. Love it, recently had a stage 1 remap which has taken it to 275bhp

    The MR2 is a wonderful car to drive, with the pre cat issue mentioned as well it was fixed for the face lift versions so anything post 2002 will have a much more reliable engine

    Those manicats/cats on the mr2s are incredibly expensive, if it's got both you may as well chuck the car away, several hours labor and that's if the manifold studs haven't seized , last time I quoted over 2k to do the job as it was specialist genuine Toyota parts only, wrote the customers car off! Please make sure this isn't blowing or chucking eml and emissions faults on before buying people! Another great vid as always!

    Picked my R53 up in 2020 at around £1.5k - she's a bit rough round the edges, but I love it to bits

    The E87 118d, and 120d are great fun and loads of torque. Don’t believe all the bad timing chain hype out there. Just make sure it’s been serviced regularly and there’s no noise or rattling sound coming from the engine. Also running it on Shell V power keeps DPF clogging up at bay. Great rear wheel drive fun.

    Fantastic J.B. Sorry it was frustrating but you did do it justice buddy. It’s not easy to find what you want for that kind of money. The second hand car market has taken off again. I was always partial to Mk2 focus CC3. The diesel is nippy. 😀👍

    For me the car under 2k I've been eyeballing for some time is Lexus IS220d. Heard they have head gasket issues and horrible gearing, but with some work, namely a ECU remap and Sports variant rear diff you could have a nice BMW E90 alternative

    Bro, I can't belive you keep missing out the z4. I picked up a 2.2 54 reg roadster for just over 2k and it's amazing in many ways. I mean, looks like a hairdressers car and has electrical problems but man I love it

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 9 месяцев назад

      If being unreliable and looking like a hairdresser's car were things that would stop cars getting onto the list, then the TT, Alfa and Mini wouldn't get within 100 miles of this video 🤣 Z4 is an interesting one, is it actually possible to get a vaguely solid one for £2k?

    • @bwilliams5966
      @bwilliams5966 9 месяцев назад +1

      @ApothecaryTerry mines in a great condition, rough round the edges and 100k on the clock. But for a 19 year old car, I'd say 100k ain't so bad. It sounds amazing, powerful and drifts nice

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 9 месяцев назад

      @@bwilliams5966 Sounds pretty good to me, gaps in mileage are an issue but high mileage isn't (and 100k isn't a lot really). Obviously with a car like that, it was originally expensive so you need to be prepared for costly issues, but I'm guessing there aren't many if it's looked after.
      Counting all costs (purchase, depreciation, fuel, tyres, repairs, etc), a £2k Z4 is probably cheaper to own than, for example, a £5k Fiat 500 and a far better car in basically every way!

      @@ApothecaryTerry there's electrical faults, expected for a convertible. Some of the interior is water damaged too but again, expected. Someone loved this car and sold it to me in mint condition

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 9 месяцев назад

      @@bwilliams5966 For a car of that age, mileage and type that sounds great honestly!
      I've bought 2 cars this year with a combined mileage barely half as much and they were both in worse condition...gave the 1st one back because "we replaced bits but we don't know what bits" isn't acceptable paperwork. Then replaced it with a 2nd one, which is due at a transmission specialist on Monday to see if the diff is knackered (Torsen, so guessing not cheap!). Also has a torn driver's seat, worn steering wheel, broken armrest and some strange noises from the suspension. Actually impressive for a car that's only done 40k miles 🤣

    I feel like £1k would have been tricky, since you're well into bangers at that price these days! Even my first car back in 2006 (...which makes me feel old) was £1500 then. Can get good cars, especially if you know what you're doing with them, but for most of us it's risky!
    On that basis, the best car you can buy under £1k: one that works!
    From this list, the TT is nice, and I always love a Swift, but the GT 🤤
    Got my Pug booked into a garage next week, to get someone competent to confirm my suspicion that not driving straight (diff, possibly) isn't a design feature. Alternatively, it is, and the other 3 I've driven (and owned in one case) were all broken 🤣 Then I've got it booked back in with the main garage to get them to actually bother fixing it rather than saying "it's camber mate" - yeah, that explains why it pulls the right and only under (light) throttle, muppets.
    Fun fact: 2 cars I've owned this year are currently up on Autotrader! The Porker, with Priddys (who sold it to me) and the previous Pug, a grey one with Cazoo. I can highly recommend buying that Porsche, the Pug...well I think it works better than the new one, but has 0 paperwork including for work Cazoo themselves did, which is mildly terrifying...

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry 9 месяцев назад

      I feel like your list is familiar...mostly from "worst car in the world" lists worryingly! The Pluriel and 1007 are stalwarts of those, while the Grand Voyager was the first NCAP 0 car. The JLR products top the (un)reliability lists instead.
      All that said, I've not driven any of those ones I've mentioned there, so can only find it interesting that not everyone hates them. I have driven a Fiat 500 though and the most positive thing I can say about it is that it's very slightly more practical than other handbags 🤣 I do like the Citroen C5 though, so this isn't a "you're wrong" comment, it's a "hmm, interesting", except perhaps the 500 because that's awful.

      @@mckokto It's possible to have an opinion and discuss that opinion with someone who doesn't share it (and has presented some evidence that others also don't) without closing your eyes, flapping your arms and yelling "only my opinion exists" 🤣
      As I said, I wasn't even saying I necessarily even think you're wrong about most of it, just that your view is against the prevailing opinions and that's interesting. If any discussion should be started from that it's not "I'm entitled to my opinion" - it's a geeky car discussion about why you think your opinion is right. This isn't some official mainstream sport channel where you'll get flamed for having an opinion, this is the land of car nerds! Your opinion is as valid as other, banter may happen but s'all good.
