Fantastic reviews of games. Just found a more recent video on C64 titles and now working back across the older ones. I like the fact you let the videos speak for themselves and don't take over with excessive commentary. A nice touch.
Gotta love that PETSCII revival! The Lovecats demo is endearing. Also, I believe that David Murray wanted PETSCII Robots to be basically the same game on a number of systems that have the charset. So, he makes use of only that and no fancy hardware scrolling "tricks" to make the C64 version stand out. It does have a few more colours and detail but that's basically it. Anyway, he has a number of videos about the making of on his channel.
I've recently bought a few new C64 games and has brought back the love for the device. There are some awesome programmers out there wringing every last bit out it. Love their work and it's well worth supporting. C64 everyday now.
What a great list of games and demos. David Murray is quite the talented programmer.. I have been subbed to his channel for years and only recently discovered that he creates games for the beloved Commodore and very well thought out, designed and great looking ones at that.. Using only PETSCII characters to draw the graphics is another interesting idea and looks great (I had the same idea back in the late 80s/early 90s and created my own PETSCII graphic games in basic myself). All the other games on this list look very impressive too, I'm amazed at what the C64 is capable of when in the right hands.. Amazing stuff.. Sarah is also a very talented programmer, Briley Witch looks like an incredible experience.
Robots did give me an appreciation for David's game design style and he deserves more attention from the non-USA community - hopefully he will get this now.
@@RetroGamerNation Most definitely. BTW I love your channel, I'm a fellow Aussie myself and it's great when I come across Australian channels based around my interests and hobbies. Thanks for creating such interesting and well thought out videos. The presentation is perfect and you clearly put a lot of effort into each episode of RGN.
It should be mentioned also that not only are there other graphics modes for Attack of the PETSCII Robots, but that the game itself is available for the Vic-20 and even the old Commodore PET computer! Hats off to David Murray for going the extra mile as I can't imagine there are too many people out there with working CBM PET computers. David ("The 8 Bit Guy") has also made several videos on the making of this game (as well as his other recent retro game, "Planet X2", which is also available for MANY platforms).
Thanks for the feedback - it is easy to take for granted that not everyone has the time to follow the current C64 scene in its entirety so this format looks to be connecting with viewers.
Really like the look of Zombie Island. It has the look and pace of some of the good Ocean platformers like Batman, Navy Seals, Total Recall etc (which is a good thing). Although we've seen many platform games in the last couple of decades none that I can remember have that classic Ocean-like (when they got it right) feel.
Lions of the Universe raised the shooter bar - in my opinion - back in 1994 and still has not - again, in my opinion - been bettered. This is an objective assessment, it's nothing personal against any other game devs!
Enforcer (1992) and maybe Soul Force win over LOTU I think. Though Lions is certainly among the best SHMUPs. It just looks too much like Armalyte for my taste.
Not mentioned in the video, but Wor2one looks just like an enhanced version of Wizard of Wor. which is one of my fav C64 games. Same "Wor" word, labyrinth , players move the same way etc.
Good points. I deliberately left out mentioning Wizard of Wor as the game seems to be missing a fe of those unique characteristics that make Wizard of Wor as stand out. We'll see how the finished product ends up.
@@3622Dave I was thinking the same but the game's website is wor2one.com and the game is inspired by Wizard of Wor - hence the reference to Wor 2 in the game name.
The fire to jump and up to shoot control scheme in Run n Gunn is great! An example of modern game design in a C64 game. One annoying thing is that if you try to jump straight up after moving, the character will do a diagonal jump instead. You have to stand still a brief moment before jumping to not get a diagonal jump.
@@snakefriesia6808 But then you can't jump while shooting and jumping will take way too long. This game is pretty hard and at the latest when boss fighting this button design would break your neck. ;)

I wish the 8-Bit Guy would use a better scrolling method. My eyes hurt when watching this and Planet X2. We don't live in 1985 anymore. C64 games have come a long way since then.
@@RetroGamerNation Thank you, and you can tell those demo creators that even an old C64 vet was so impressed with those demos that they were suspicious of them :)

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and welcome to the channel. September video coming out soon.

Yes, the two sided disk contains the same game for C64, VIC20 and PET. With the latter two possibly needing RAM expansions installed.
I will never cease to be amazed by what we still manage to create today ..
On a 40 year old system no less.

@@RetroGamerNation For what it's worth, I think the main coders for the Apple ][ port of PETSCII Robots were an Aussie and a Canadian... xD

Just bought Runn 'n Gunn...cannot await to play it this afternoon. Thanks for your round ups! Love to watch'em
Aw sweet they featured David's game
Another nice presentation. We definitely have the second golden age of the c64 at this point
Really enjoying these monthly round-ups! Thanks!

Very good pick up on the 'Ocean' look of Zombie Island.
Awesome round up again. Thanks!
Many thanks for this video! Panic attacks are devastating but we can learn to fight them! Well done!
As always - thx for this great summary.
I own the digital version of "Attack of the PETSCII Robots" and it is a great game. I even enjoy it in PET mode using xpet :)
really cool games....I was impressed by all the content created. Well done!
How good are the C64 games these days !?! Just remarkable... absolutely wonderful what they are doing.
Some great releases to look forward to :)
I really wish coding wasn't so hard, I would really love to be able to make some new 80's arcarde style games on the c64.

Ooh, I don’t think I have any awareness of that title. Something for me to check out.

Reminds me a little of Berzerk as well. Minus Evil Otto that is
I wonder if it is meant to be pronounced 'Wor 2 one' or 'Warzone' since the 2 is of course similar to a Z and Wor 2 one does sound rather strange!

i for one prefer that it only jumps if you press and hold the button, and it will fire if you only press it shortly

Is there a cjm file available so that mini or maxi owners can play PETSCII Robots with a SNES style pad on their machine?

He wouldn't be big into smooth scrolling, that's for sure!
well.. he DID port it over from a PET.. so he kept that up for compatibility sake
Hi. What's the name of the game at 4:32 ?
It is called 'My Day on the Highway'
@@RetroGamerNation thank you very much
what game is this 5:45 ?
Gravity Duck. This game is still being worked on I believe.
Hi just a comment some of those demos do not look like they could run on a real (stock) C64. I hope there is some due diligence done to verify these.
Hi, all demos run on my stock PAL C64C computer.

The game of the minute 5.30 it's call zombie what?

That demo is full of charm, love the expressions on the cats in the background
