    Of Note, regarding the Orks:
One of the best parts about Orks is, in my experience, just how enthusiastic it feels to collect, build, paint and play this faction. With Orks, it feels like anything goes - want a mixed army of vehicles and snakebites? Maybe a very cunning mek convinced the snakebites those are just metallic squigs. You open a new toothpaste and decides that that part you twist off with the cap looks like a gear? Glue it to the back of a spanner or nob for some extra mek-yness. Particularly building is just insanely fun with orks - you can really kitbash to your hearts content, wether you channel your inner mek to give your vehicles or guns some extra flair, or your inner painboss to doctor around with your infantry until every last boy is a unique piece that you will want to give a name and a little bit of backstory.
Tankbustas being old is not all that big a deal, since they are just basic boyz with Rokkit Launchas and you can cobble a great looking unit of 5 to 10 of them together very easily between boyz (old and new), Lootas (Spanners get rokkit launchas too) and Nobz (different looking rokkits from their kombi-rokkits). What's more of a pain is the weirdboy, for example. In my opinion, it still looks good - but resin doesn't make for easy kitbashing, so if you want more than one and share the orky view that two models looking the same is a sacrilege against our great green gods, you will need to get creative. The same could be said about meks, but yesterday I slapped the mentioned "toothpaste-gear" on the back of an old boyz nob and used some leftover snazzgun bits to turn his slugga into a kustom mega-slugga, so turned out to be easier than expected.
Another thing worth mentioning is that our character support is kind of shit. Ghazghkull and Makari are absolutely awesome, and Mozrog Skragbad, the named Snakebite Beastboss on Squigosaur is nice too - but that weird HQ Runtherd Fella is just a garbage-tier character in every way. I don't even remember his name, and I can nail the points cost of pretty much any ork unit without looking it up. Our other characters were pulled this year - Auspex here is the sole reason I managed to get my hands on zagstruck, badrukk and snikrot. Grotsnik and Zhadsnark are long gone, and Bad Moons just didn't have a named character model to start with, as far as I can tell.
One of the very biggest points for Orks is that you can loot anything. I am about to loot one of chainbreaker lances, and some day in the future, when I have enough of all the ork units and knights and have enough confidence in my green stuff handiwork, I will begin to collect a Tyranids army and turn them into a runtherd- beastsnagga- or just snakebite ridden squig faction. I will say it again, just to emphasize my point. With enough experience, you can loot ANYTHING as an ork player.
Though you will need a large box for bits and tools.

Very well said. I don't currently play the game, I just watch these videos for nostalgia and when I get that plastic crack itch, but when I DID play, I played orks mainly for all the reasons you mentioned. A little story to drive the point home: back in 5th edition, my friend played blood angels and his brother played space wolves and during a game against each other they managed to drop the blood angel land raider, totally smashing it in a way they didn't think they could fix.
Both of them were regular enemies of my orks and I use to buy bits off them that they didn't want or use and I also bought this looted land raider. Little bit of pins, some extra bits, loads of non GW stuff, and just a little paint and I made myself a brand new battle wagon that matched our narrative because it looked like a wrecked and looted blood angel tank with space wolf bits stuck on to reinforce the damaged bits. Total cost for the whole thing: $13.
The face of my blood angel playing friend after I rolled that sucker out: priceless

Pro of collecting orks: kitbashing. “Every kit is an Ork kit”, after all. Even if you take an Ork kit and chop it up to make something new, you can be a bit more ramshackle and creative with it, since it’ll still fit the aesthetic. I recently made a trukk based on Lord Humungus’ truck from Mad Max 2 from a basic Trukk kit, and let me tell you, you can cover a LOT of sins with scrap metal and dreams.

It should be mentioned that, aside from the sheer amount of glue and paint each individual model requires, Imperial and Chaos Knights are probably some of the most straightforward to assemble and paint on a stricter budget or at a lower skill level.
Larger scale parts and lack of ultra-fine details such as visible human eyes do not demand as minute a degree of precision as some other faction models, such as particularly blinged-out Marines or Aeldari. It's also very practical to magnetize the assorted options for each of your Questoris knights, reducing the likelihood that you'll need to buy more/replacement Questoris if the rules change on you.

I started with the Indomitus box because the Necrons looked scary awesome, and I heard Ultramarines were the easiest army to learn 40K. This was a few months before the pandemic started and I played countless Necrons vs. Ultramarines battles with my roommate during the lockdown, and gradually expanded both armies. I played both armies but I prefer Necrons. One of reasons I didn’t like Ultramarines was they were a shooting army, so when the 9E Black Templars codex was released last year, I dived in deep and now I definitely prefer melee Space Marines. I love the Black Templars lore and their badass chains and colour scheme.
I got into 40K even more in 2022 as things got back to normal, competed in a few tournaments, and tried out several new armies, including Custodes, Genestealers, and recently Leagues of Votann. The look and lore of Votann are great, and it doesn’t hurt they were so OP’d out of the gate. The only problem is that Sagitaurs sold out immediately from my LGS and haven’t been restocked yet, so I’m still proxying Impulsors and haven’t played in any GW tournaments yet.
I agree with the suggestion of choosing an army you like rather than one based on the meta, because it’s always changing. I kinda regret starting my Custodes army after they got nerfed. TBH I enjoy playing Genestealers more even though they’re really tricky, and it’s mainly because they’re freaky evil cultists and remind me of Lovecraftian horror.
Just pick the army you think is coolest and have FUN!!

Appreciate the long-form video, mate. I know it's normally not financially worthwhile to do long vids like these. So, it's greatly appreciated that you do it anyway!
I'm a Necron-nut. I love their lore and aesthetics. But, I've actually retired from playing them and am starting up Leagues of Votaan. I don't like how Necron's have to cheese their faceroll secondaries and cross their fingers that their early point generation sees them to a victory. As they often get wiped off the board by turn four regardless of how you scored. It doesn't feel good winning or losing right now. Leagues are strong while having challenging secondaries that keep them balanced. Winning with them feels good. While losing, still feels satisfying as I normally do a lot of damage still. I think it's good to pick the army you like the lore and look of when you're first getting into the game. And then picking an army that is radically different than the other in playstyle to feel fresh and unique when playing the same game with a different army.

@CarlTheJar if you want alpha legion focused models, the forgeworld has an alpha legion sniper model that looks cool. If you mean for creating from scratch, then you can not go wrong with chaos legionaires as a starting point. Then maybe some havocs and a rhino. Otherwise, there is no specific unit type I can think of. A warpsmith might be nice if you want to go vehicle route. A lord discordant as well. Maybe a Maulerfield. I am not really good at list building, though. I just like making models so you can always do some research as well. :)

    Blood Angels, because I loved the Command Edition boxset so much I bought it twice, and their colour scheme is easy to paint well (plus see above re: Space Hulk and my Xenos need something to shoot at);

I got back in to collecting and painting things recently after a 24 year break and am astounded by the detail and thought put in to the lore and the sheer amount of GW stuff available these days. Its not cheap but is such a rewarding hoby - even if you dont play any games with the things you build and paint! I keep tyring to learn the rules but they are so bloody complex to a dyslexic beginner. Someone needs to write a 40k for severely dyslexic people simplified rule book!! Id buy it tomorrow if they did! I got the cadia stands set last week and have so far kit bashed a Skaven field ordanance team and skaven scout sentinil from a storm vermin kit!
