    Similar in look to a fine tuner on a violin or cello, a hip shot is a contraption for that bass that goes on top of the tailpiece and holds the string. The hipshot has a lever on the front of it so that when you open it,you can change the pitch of the string. As you may have seen in my extension video, the lowest note a regular four string bass can go down to is an E. Extensions were created so that we could play down to a low C, exactly one full octave below the cello. Five-string basses, like the ones that are commonly played in Europe, go all the way down to a low B. So, when we add the hipshot to our low C string, we can tune it down one half step which allows us to open the lever and go down to a low B like our 5-string bass counterparts. Though we don’t play low B’s too often, there are some great opportunities in the repertoire for them. Some examples are Rachmaninoff’s second symphony, Tchaikovsky’s sixth symphony and “Romeo and Juliet,” Brahms’ third symphony, and Shostakovich’s fifth symphony just to name a few.

    Thanks, now I want a hipshot for my 5 strings to get the instant infernal low A...😈 Great vid, In Zarathoustra there is a low B written after the basses solo.

    I always wanted the low C extension on my bass. I remember in my first season with the Fort Worth Symphony in Texas we did Tchaikovsky's Russian Easter Festival which has a low D in a spot. I would fly tune, this is the name I came up for it, or retune my bass in the middle of playing to a low D and then back up to E standard. I picked up the knack for it while playing Jazz which I did before being exposed to Classical. Ron Cater did it if I recall correctly and so I picked up the talent from him; man, do I love Ron Cater. Anyway our conductor and especially our first chair bassist was quite impressed with the fact I could retune in the middle of playing, but the then second chair bassist was also a Jazz guy and would call me a 'show off' as he rolled his eyes at me. Our bass section was tight and we each had something that made us special. Dallas had all the good music because their company is outstanding, but Fort Worth has a better set of players. I used to jump at any chance to go sub for the Dallas Symphony or the Dallas Opera. If I could get hooked up here in along the east coast I would be a very happy man. I really miss those days.
    Anyway I'd never seen a Hip Shot until just now. That is super cool! So now of course I want both a low C extension and a Hip Shot. lol

    in Also Sprach Zarathustra, the low B appears once, in a two-way divisi. That and the march in Pines of Rome are the only examples I can think of in the orchestral literature of the note actually being written. There may be more though.

    Hey Joseph, loved the video! Been trying to work on the Elgar cello concerto and was interested in maybe getting one of these so I can easily do the open C-G double stops. Just wondering how effect the change in tension has on the rest of the bass. Do you find it to be a significant change?
    Thanks,
    Alex

      That's A GREAT question. Going down to the b natural hasn't been such an issue that I feel like I must "retune" the bass... That said, I do check my other strings afterwards to make sure nothing shifted. Every once in a while, things move more than expected, but that's more the exception than the rule.

    Do you use grease as Hipshot suggests to ensure the E string moves smoothly over the bridge? Or did a graphite pencil work (the way we usually do)?

  • @abrahamflannigan8427

    wait till they invent a 6 string bass with a low F# that you can put a low d0 extension on with a hipshot that drops to Db0

  • @Aio-Project

    I don't know how I've never heard of this! Thats a cool choice of mechanism. Over here in San Diego, the principal of the symphony here has an extension that simply goes down to a B. Considering those Bb and A 0s, I wonder if one could put an A extension on a 5 string. Maybe thats too much tension on the neck

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  3 года назад

      Well dropping the pitch would release the tension... The question is if the string would actually be able to vibrate! 😂

      Dennis Roy in the Boston Symphony has an A extension on his 5 string. I’ve seen him use it for works by Thomas Ades.

    Hi Joseph! is that the only way I can get the low B? with the Hip Shot? What if I don't have a hipshot? is it possible to tune down to B with the Extension only?

  • @marktomko3201
    @marktomko3201 3 года назад +1

    Did you need to trim the silks on your E/C/B string? They’re right up to the bridge with the hip shot, but I can’t tell if you took some off so it didn’t reach the playing length.

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  3 года назад

      No, I haven't trimmed my B string. It sounds good that way, and it works for me. :)

  • @1MRBASSMAN
    @1MRBASSMAN 3 года назад +1

    I've heard complaints that use of the hip shot can throw some of the other strings out of tune. Have you ever had that problem? I would also be interested in using one of those extenders to lower the A string to a G, to help with some spots in the Enigma Variations, and also to lower the D string to C to help with that spot in the end of the first part of the Rite of Spring. Would a different mechanism be needed to adjust these two middle strings. And of course it goes without saying that I love listening to you play. Beautiful sound and musicianship.

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much! When adjusting the tuning of any strings, there will definitely be changes to the pitch of the other strings as they try to maintain equilibrium. This change has never been so extreme that it has been concerning for me. I'm always fine tune adjusting my strings as needed throughout performances so it doesn't feel any different.

    Your videos are always very interesting. Many thanks.
    I'm only wondering, if the "B" means what we in Germany are calling a "H"?
    It is confusing because in Germany (and Scandinavia) the "B" is called "H" but the "B flat" is called "B".
    The other "flat notes" are called Ces , Des, Es, Fes, Ges, As, - but the "H" is not called "Hes" but "B".
    The "sharp notes" are called Cis, Dis, Eis, Fis, Gis, Ais, His
    This german "H" never made sense for me, because the alphabetical order of the other names - especially in A minor:
    German and scandinavian languages: A H C D E F G A - but in English: A B C D E F G A .
    This makes much more sense for me.

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  3 года назад +1

      Yes!!!! The H string! And thank you for solving that mystery for me! I used to get solo strings from a German company - or a company that used German - when I was young and always wondered why the B string was labeled as H. Now, I know why! 😁

      @@josephconyers7854 I just a few questions because I’m very interested in this thing:
      1) does the hip shot cause you to need to readjust your bridge any more frequently than usual?
      2)does it change the sound of the instrument drastically or at all?
      3) are certain strings better with it than others (would it work well with a spirocore)?
      4) do you need a luthier to install it?
      This thing seems incredibly cool and a significantly cheaper alternative to a B extension. Do you think it’s really worth it if I’m going into music?

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  3 года назад

      1) not that I have experienced.
      2) other than the fact that it can now produce a low b, no.
      3) you can use it on any string that is naturally supposed to be on the instrument. Because it releases tension and doesn't add, there's no threat to the health of the string.
      4) You can install it yourself, and it literally takes no longer then installing any string you would normally have to change. It's surprisingly easy. I'm sure there's a video out there about installation.
      Good luck. The hipshot is an incredible alternative to putting a b extension on one's bass. That's what I refused to do....
      I hope that helps!
