Stravinsky's Rite of Spring Bassoon Solo | Play Me an Excerpt, Ep. 5
So excited to be looking at the famous and beautiful bassoon solo from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Oleksandr Kashlyuk is our featured player today. One thing that really comes across when I listened and watched this performance is how, despite sounding improvisatory, Stravinsky sets up some specific phrasing markings that can carry you through this solo and help you maintain the phrase as if you're also dancing through the ballet.

Ave Maria | Joseph Conyers ft. Joseph Conyers
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
Bach's Prelude in C Major from the Well-Tempered Clavier BMV 846 is a classical music treasure. French composer, Charles Gounod, enjoyed it so much, he added what ended up being a seamless melody atop the original score. He did so so convincingly that it's easy to to think that his arrangement is was the way the piece was originally written to be performed. He did this with the addition of two ...
Strauss' Don Juan | Play Me an Excerpt, Ep. 4
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
Hey musicians-especially violinists, today! We went in depth with Xavier's fantastic playing and how important consistency can be with an orchestra audition- making sure you are going to land where your fellow musicians need you to. This is an incredible piece, and it has a lot of moments where you need that cutting edge precision. Have you played Strauss' tone poem, Don Juan? Let me know in th...
How to Play Rossini “La Gazza Ladra” | Joseph Conyers, Double bass
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.3 года назад
Rossini’s “La Gazza Ladra,” or “The Thieving Magpie” in English, is a two-act opera that’s most known for its overture. The Philadelphia Orchestra’s upcoming virtual season will include the overture in one of our programs. In a previous video, I talked about how I choose excerpts for my Instagram posts and mentioned that I usually pick excerpts from music I am playing at work. Now that the orch...
Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre: A Study in Orchestral Excerpts

Instagram post number 666 was a special post. When I think of 666, I think of a really bad cold medicine, but that’s another story. Most people think of the devil when they hear that number. Rather than playing an excerpt from Symphonie Fantastique, which would be the obvious choice, I picked a piece that started with a tri-tone. A tri-tone is a musical interval that was for a long time synonym...
Double Bass Does Bach | Play Me An Excerpt | Joseph Conyers

Hey musicians! Today we head back to Bach, with double bassist Daniel playing an excellent rendition of the Badinerie (mvmt 7) from Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor. This is such a famous piece (even for non musicians- everyone's heard the ringtone!) so we get to discuss how important it is to really be aware of your fellow musicians, and how the phrasing should always be informed by wh...
Bach Excerpt Only | Joseph Conyers, Double Bass

Hey, everybody! Here's an Instagram video... that never made it to Instagram! I didn't start posting videos on Instagram until about 4 years ago, and this video is a walk down memory lane about one of my first very first video posts. I discuss Bach, my approach to his music, and why I was practicing this piece in the first place. Enjoy!
Play Me an Excerpt! Bach & Brahms | Joseph Conyers, Double bass
Просмотров 1 тыс.3 года назад
Today we return to Brahms, but on a different piece and with a different instrument. What a pleasure to hear flute player, Maria, play an excerpt from Brahms' 4th Symphony, which gives us the opportunity to talk about interpreting his dynamic markings for this flute solo. Later in the episode, we hear from David, a double bassist, as he performs Bach's Courante from the Suite IV, and we get to ...

Dragonetti: A Study in Melody with Joseph Conyers
Просмотров 12 тыс.3 года назад
I thought the Dragonetti Double Bass Concerto would be a great piece to look at for a beautiful melody that young musicians (or any musician!) can really dig into with their phrasing. How do you take a piece beyond just the notes and rhythms? What steps do you take? I think this piece utilizes an open string so well, so check out my video on playing open strings as well! ruclips.net/video/Z878a...
Excerpt Only: Dragoneti Bass Concerto in A Major | Joseph Conyers
Просмотров 2,4 тыс.3 года назад
Although it is more commonly known as a student concerto, the Dragonetti Bass Concerto in A Major has some beautiful moments that make it stand out as more than just a student level piece. The true authorship of this piece is in question as some believe it was actually written by Edouard Nanny. Either way, it has classical and romantic elements alike. It has a lightness, openness, and buoyancy ...
The Truth About Playing Open Strings | Joseph Conyers, Double Bass

To use or not to use an open string: that is the question. You asked and I delivered! The truth is, sometimes a score, composer, time period/performance practice, or what have you will all point towards a note played on open strings. Here are some ways I make sure that it sounds appropriate and elegant, and some questions I ask myself to make a final decision to play on an open string. What are...

I didn't have music lessons in school and only took up the double bass when I left the RAF in my early 30s. I've not had many lessons, but get by with reading a few tuition books and playing in an orchestra and concert band. Not having a teacher gets you to think about problems you're having with your playing and working them out by yourself.

That video was very helpful as I’m learning the technique. Is it better to bow while sitting or standing?

in Also Sprach Zarathustra, the low B appears once, in a two-way divisi. That and the march in Pines of Rome are the only examples I can think of in the orchestral literature of the note actually being written. There may be more though.

Given the double bass's relationship with the violone, it makes sense that we have 5 stringers. More would be cumbersome given the larger size of a double bass, less would be restrictive given the repertoire. Violones were once a "stylish" instrument for the time period (and were much more affordable than a harpsichord). Also, they came in various ranges kind of like some brass and woodwinds. They even had various string numbers from three to six.

Funny how Panormo didn't label his instruments, and several are notoriously mislabeled (e.g. label prior to his birth; label suggesting he built a renowned instrument at 13 yrs old; instruments with labels suggesting he was in one location when he was known to be working in another). Yet, somehow experts nonetheless attribute these instruments to Panormo - a man and family renowned for refusing to label instruments and for consistently altering the style of build. Weird.

Excellent session. Those triplets on the of the 3rd and the entire 4th line are played in the string halfway between the middle and the upper fourth of the bow, basically three quarters up the stick, and literally stick the stick on the string like glue. That gives more control, allows for fortissimo, and doesn't give it a spiccato.
