Weird review... he keeps saying the Focus is faster... but he was keeping up with it, and needed to brake not to hit it... until the last 30 seconds of the video...
they're filming a review. If the ford took off, that wouldn't give them very good footage for the video would it? :P They purposely kept them both close for the video, but then you see at the end of the video, to demonstrate that the focus was faster, it then took off and left megane for dead.

Compare two cars with a big difference in horsepower! It is understandable that the focus is faster. But it is better? What time is done in the nurburgring?
@StefanTetteroo I drive a RS and in the beginning I thought the beep to be nonsense too, but because it revs up really fast and just straight up into the rev-limiter in lower gears (1,2,3) without really giving you any indication that it soon reaches the rev-limit (decreasing accelaration etc.), the beep actually does make sense.
@ixianja You're half right, over there it was called an s16 but in the UK it was badged as a GTi the 306 was badged as both S16 155 bhp and 5 gears Gti-6 167 bhp and 6 gears.
And also, megane is infinitely more luxurious inside and has a very high quality feel inside , unlike focus (and old megane). Megane is just a better car. I drive a focus for 3 years now, and every time i sat inside the megane, its just such a nice place to be. Its feels nice and compact. Seats are awesome, even the basic ones.
1) utter respect to Renault - the new Megane coupe is just gorgeous and now we also know it is very good... (needless to say I would take Focus in a heartbeat over Megane) 2) it is good when you hear a reviewer saying his opinion in a clear way, without lots of b/s around AUTOCAR rocks!
you are right. you have to know that r26 is totally stripped car made for the cup, while the FRS isn't and it can be normally used even for a family car. i do agree that FRS for the price, it doesn't have a real competator.
@akumadriver quite opposite. i think that since the clio video they are trying to show that focus rs isn't so good afterall. the same thing is their scirocco vs. focus rs video. check it out and you will see.
Forgive me Sutters but weren't you close to overtaking the Focus on several occasions there? I think I would have the Megane. Seen the interior for it and I think it's a pretty good looking machine overall (maybe the rims on this car are exempt)! The Megane probably is the best to own everyday mind. Less power = less unnecesary power. A better ride. I know a lot of potholes where I live including infamous John that would cause that Focus trouble.
French car builders have made the best hot hatches for years now, they certainly know how to develop a great chassis. Usually flimsy build tho, but this might have improved over time. Focus rs can be fun just listening to that 5 pot thrum !!!
@Mantua64 How about if the Focus was chipped as well?Various parts of the Focus RS have been strengthened to cope with the hp and torque.A re-flashed RS Focus would be able to take a lot more power and torque than the RS Megane. The Focus handles well enough and is faster in every respect in real world driving. So what if the Megane on certain tracks, maybe a couple of tenths quicker than the RS Focus? .
@Blackbold1970 you forgot to mension that it wasn't a rs megane but cup edition, whigh is totally stripped down. it doesn't have even a real windows, it has plexy glass. it weights more than 200 kilos less than the rs. strip FRS and then you will see the real results
Whats there to think about. Even the old Megane RS is more than 30 seconds faster around Nurbrugring than any other hot hatch (including S3 and Golf R32 with 4wd).
this is correct, although i dont think either pushed at all. The focus he says is faster than the renault, obviously, but im a bit bored of renaults chasing the ford now, just do it the other way round to prove the focus worth please. Both cracking looking cars though
hmm... both cars I can't get in the US... and a road I'll never find around me too. I'd take the Focus for the extra power... mid corner grip is just some new tires away... maybe different sway bars... but the ass end on the RS needs some help. the front looks great though.
its not always about speed.... while these cars a reperformance cars, Ford Focus is based on a family hatch with proper head room and normal road manners. Its the better balance between letting mum use it during the week (if she doesnt mind the looks) and taking it for a spin at the track on weekends! As for the renault...you better leave it at the pit garage during the week.
@hultii If you watch the video closely the Megane matches the RS about 4 min of the 4:27 min of the video. Only when he doesn't look on the road anymore and talks directly into the camera the RS (naturally) gains that lead from the end... So actually in my opinion the Megane clearly won, because the 55hp stronger car could not get any substantial lead as long as both drivers drove concentrated.
5 seconds? Not a chance. The front wheel drive focus would struggle to put the power down. It's a struggle to control the torque steer of the 300 horses it has now! I test drove one.
I went to Renault and Ford dealerships today. The Renault is £21,000, the Focus £27,000. With a £3000 deposit and a final ballon payment at the end, over 36 months, the Megane was £367.24, the Focus was £590!!! Renault offer 5.6% APR, Ford 10.3%. That was including £2000 of extras on the Renault including the Recaros. The Focus isn't worth over £200 a month more…
Im a Clio sport owner and liked how the R26R whooped the Focus RS on Top Gear, so to see the car they're replacing it with is a whole 50bhp less than the R26R seems like a bit of a white flag from Renault - "We're still going to make a decent Renault Sport but we cant be bothered competing with the Focus anymore" kind of attitude. I like the new shape Megane and was looking forward to the Sport but if I had to choose I'd buy the Focus, its more raw and everything the megane should have been
What are you talking about? Megane RS is not a F1 car , like focus RS is not the WRC. Again , sorry , the full equiped focus RS is faster than the full equiped megane RS
yeah you right about Renault they totally change the look of the car i really like the new design really its fantastic to look at rather than the focus
So really what they are saying is... The Clio Cup they test drove that STAYED with the RS is better than the more powerful and refined upgrade?! The Megane stayed with the Focus until the end, and looked like it was gonna pass at times. Was this a real race? I guess we'll see when it goes to the Top Gear test track!!!
@Genius83 we should wait before the new astra vxr...i dont think will be that good but still it might be worth...i own a vw golf gti mk5 and i think my next car will be this megane...i like very much hot hatches too :)
Actually the Megane is lighter and Autocar tested it as being quicker to 100mph than the Focus RS a week later in their magazine. AND it handles better....
The Renault Mégane wasn't at its finest evolution (which is out now in 2014), and it doesn't look very old, whereas the Focus looks old and the new is only available in ST for the moment, and looks strange to me.
I'm a "yank" and I completely agree with you! I WISH that our cars were as good as yours (EU). We could do it, but there are too many idiots willing to pay for "power" instead of handling here. I had a second gen RX-7 that only had about 160 hp. A Camaro Z28 would destroy it in acceleration but the RX-7 could EASILY destroy it on a curvy back-road. Give me handling over power any day. ALL American's don't believe power is everything!
@reecekym24 may I ask you if you´ve ever had the chance to sit in each of the cars? Only sitting, not driving (I don´t expect that much). Because to me it seems, that you´re just talking.. WITHOUT ANY experience. Sorry
Not strictly true... Watch the top gear megane R26R against it, in a straight line drag race the megane pulls away and holds it off to 110mph, not bad considering its almost 80bhp down. I still think the focus is the best hot hatch around tho overall
cant wait to see the megane on the "ring" funny how a 230 bhp R26.R beats the Focus RS on the RING and a more powerful megane 250bhp is reviewed to be worse than the focus RS? I dont think the Renault would launch a car that is outperformed by its predecessor, so my choice would be the megane 250, Cup suspension and leather recaros a must! nice vid!
ok NOW YOUR LOOKING FOR EXCUSES because your wrong, but answer this, if renault was so good at developing their own engine why was their logo not dominatly displayed on any car with their motor?.........( their engine logo was no bigger then fords when they where in f1) don't you think thats something to be proud off!
i must disagree, put the focus behind and it will be the same although if the road had a little straight the focus would be straight by. These videos are all of the renaults chasing, its easier to do that
@reecekym24 without looking for a verbal fight, but let me tell you this in peace: I own a Renault Megane RS. A guy who lives in the same village like me has the Focus RS in white. We have a very long straight street that leads to the next village. Exactly 2kilometers I don´t claim that I can overtake him. But I´m 5 meters behind him through the whole street. I think the Focus RS is amazingly beautiful and brutal. But don´t tell me that the Renault can´t keep up - especially interior quality!
@jarrus464 Depends what track you go to - the MeganeSport is probably more nimble - but the RS on a faster track will destroy it. You can tweak the RS for £400 to give it 350bhp - you cant compare "tweaked with standard" though as you propose.
lloyd dixon Yes but they matched the top of the line Focus against the lower version of the Megane. And there is a difference between the 250 and the 265 irelevant of how big the difference is, the 265 was the fastest FWD car ever around the nurburgring...whilst the 250 is well discontinued.
i don't know about that who is better thing, but about laptimes on nurburgring....when they are doing offical lap times, car goes full circle, but if you look at videos shoot by amateurs, the lap ends when the final straight begins, so it is not the full circle ;))
The RS seems to be a huge car CYLINDERS rally theme but if I dream of one of these, I would dream of the Megane RS, look the LED and the front wing on the face of the car to remember formula 1 engagement. That is a car. But to be honest, i don't dream of hot hatch like you and I have no xbox, i jjust work for a brand as designer and know probably more about car than you will ever.
How much more is the Focus RS? Enough to make you tune your Megane to beat the Focus. Moreover, Megane is great as it is. I don't see why people who are dedicated to look for a Focus would get a Megane, nor will the Megane people get a Focus. Anyway, to sum up I'd say go with whichever choice you want because they are both great cars.
ive actually owned fords and renaults, unlike some,rs1600i best ford i ever owned,xr3i,rs turbo series 2,clio 172 cup(valentines present for my fiance)great fun car.megane full fat 225 and the r26 in liquid gold.i never had a fault in the renaults but last year bought the nissan xtrail,28k,and had so much trouble with that, particulate filter is a *itch....im gonna probably buy the 250 next april.
The same guy puts the Clio RS with 200hp against the focus RS and 'keeps up with it'... and now he says the megane with 250hp is in a far less class then the ford? strange..
@Genius83 ok sorry than...but one thing u should know ....the renaultsport megane 250 cup is the best hot hatch...is cheap and faster...and more fun to...i like the ford but the megane more
what this vid doesnt mention is although the focus is the fastest it is also £6000 more compare it to some other cars like in the sme price range like the bmw 135i coupe and its not so impresive then!
I bought an RS250 a few weeks ago, its a brilliant car, its handling is amongst the best and its grip is monumental. In a road like that, it should have easily destroyed a Focus RS. Maybe they should have found someone who can properly drive. The proof is in the Nurburgring lap time.
Well...Iám a focus RS fan to the bone...but I love that Megane just as much as i love the Focus... difficult for me to decide..It´s like deciding wich is your favorite test... you know, imposible
@shadowbillyphone Finally, someone on the internet that talks some sense! And as for tuning a 250, 500 quid chip sees 300bhp in a more capable chassis. I am a Renault fan, but I too love the Focus, however there is no denying, the Megane handles alot better and with Equal BHP the focus would be no match.
Autocar tested these cars in the last magazine and the Megane was quicker to 100 than the focus, and faster round the track. This guy obviously can't drive. Evo magazine also tested them both finding the Megane faster. The Megane was up 20bhp on claimed and the FRS was 20bhp down. I've ordered a Megane 250 Cup :-)
Evo magazine did a track test of these two, the Cupra R and Golf GTI and the Megane won hands down. Beat the Focus by 2 seconds on a wetter track! The Focus is looking old. I'm biased though, my Megane 250 Cup is being delivered March 1st...... :o)
the good thing with Ford is that you'll still enjoy it in 10 years you can't think of buying a 5yo hot french car without talking what did, do or will go wrong with it
I love both these cars. But i would take the Ford, because it is slightly better. And i have always been a Ford-guy. :) But the Megane would be my second choise, its awsome.
depends on how you approach the pb of making the fastest traction in the world. But testing such car on then nurburgring was something Renault already know and from the analysis of the datas to the study of the chassis I think Renault used his exeprience in F1. Full equiped doesn't mean nothing to me.Full equiped has no sense and focus is not made for the track so I don't see how it could be better than the Renault.
what was this all about. first he starts saying really good things about the Megane 250 and when he almost said he prefers it he went with the Focus RS
megane makes the focus look "old".the focus is for chavs with a few quid.the vents on the focus should work well with a burberry cap and stone island jacket. no doubt renault will develop the 250 into the rs250r.and again give its customers another peach like the r26r,which at the moment is the fastest fwd production car to lap the nurburgring. i do like the look of the focus but its, well, like an old shirt, comfortable once loved but "old".
Not to be a sour puss or anything, but I've driven both on numerous occasions, and I own a Megane RS 250. Yes, the Focus is much faster in a straight line. Yes, it has a much bigger boot, one you can actually lift stuff into, not that narrow gap you get in the Megane. But still, there's no feel in the steering, and the interior feels horrible. I still prefer the Megane, it's just a nicer place to be.
Skidpad g doesn't represent real handling, and those numbers for Camaro and Mustang are well over exaggerated in your comment. Besides, Camaro wasn't even designed in USA.
Weird review... he keeps saying the Focus is faster... but he was keeping up with it, and needed to brake not to hit it... until the last 30 seconds of the video...
So the 200hp na clio can keep up with the focus but not the 250hp turbo megane ? Please ...
....not as fast as the Ford? The RS didn't look like it was getting away at all.
they're filming a review. If the ford took off, that wouldn't give them very good footage for the video would it? :P They purposely kept them both close for the video, but then you see at the end of the video, to demonstrate that the focus was faster, it then took off and left megane for dead.

They did a test of the clio 200 v the focus RS at milbrook, and the clio kept up with it, so I find it hard to believe that the megane 250 wouldn't.
autocar is hands down the best automotive sourse at combining footage, expertise, information, and entertainment in a review.
If you match the meganes power (stage 1 remap 296hp) to the focus it's a completely different story.
That's on real world where budget is the only limitation and cars are compared power vs power. But the anyone could argue that a 'stg 1' focus rs would kill an stg 1 megane rs.
at 43 seconds when the focus is firing away from you its actually parked up in the background.
Compare two cars with a big difference in horsepower!
It is understandable that the focus is faster.
But it is better?
What time is done in the nurburgring?
I picked up my Megane 250 Cup on Friday. It's amazing! I've done 400 miles in 2 days. Another 200 miles to go before I can boot it!
Depends. Camaro was designed and engineered in Australia.
1) utter respect to Renault - the new Megane coupe is just gorgeous and now we also know it is very good... (needless to say I would take Focus in a heartbeat over Megane)
2) it is good when you hear a reviewer saying his opinion in a clear way, without lots of b/s around
AUTOCAR rocks!
Now this is what a review should be like
I always wonder when they do these tests,
Do they go into the RenaultSport Monitor and turn the Engine Mapping to Extreme Mode..
Wish we had either of these here in the States.
This guy is in the wrong business.Go sell some stuff, cars are not for you...
you are right. you have to know that r26 is totally stripped car made for the cup, while the FRS isn't and it can be normally used even for a family car. i do agree that FRS for the price, it doesn't have a real competator.
im guessing its the gear change indicator, all the rs models have them altho not with the beep noise. Could possibly be the limiter?

The Focus handles well enough and is faster in every respect in real world driving.
So what if the Megane on certain tracks, maybe a couple of tenths quicker than the RS Focus?
.
@bmwe92m it indicates the optimal moment for changing gear
@Blackbold1970 you forgot to mension that it wasn't a rs megane but cup edition, whigh is totally stripped down. it doesn't have even a real windows, it has plexy glass. it weights more than 200 kilos less than the rs. strip FRS and then you will see the real results
@jonnykemp11285 wasn t the 250 superchiped ? and the megane is more of a head turner...well you don t see them everyday in australia
What's that annoying beep? Is that to tell you it's in the redline?
@Mantua64 For example : Nurburgring track time: Focus RS= 8:26 min Megane RS= 8:29 min
@poktehmat, the Megane 250 and the new 265 has this warning beep when you reach the rev-limiter.
WHERE THE HELL IS THAT ROAD PLEASE STEVE??!!! I cant quite make out the sign at the end...
Really? Which standard Ford exactly is overall better than Renault (engine, comfort, material quality)?
@mattsgoneskatin you cannot get 350php from a chiptuning for the megane. 300 yes, maybe a bit more, but not 350.
Whats there to think about. Even the old Megane RS is more than 30 seconds faster around Nurbrugring than any other hot hatch (including S3 and Golf R32 with 4wd).
missing headlightwasher cover on focus RS.....
this is correct, although i dont think either pushed at all. The focus he says is faster than the renault, obviously, but im a bit bored of renaults chasing the ford now, just do it the other way round to prove the focus worth please. Both cracking looking cars though

I've got to own a Renault before I die. Either one of these Renaultsport Meganes, or a 5 Turbo would be my most preferred.
@poktehmat RS-models have a beep for people who don't know when to change up a gear.
Focus RS isn't it discontinued now...
@poktehmat shift up / rev limiter?

I knew all the way through the video that the driver in the Focus was toying with the Relault
My mate has a R26r and he said it definately takes the edge of the performance with a passenger in the car. Just saying :)
@reecekym24
may I ask you if you´ve ever had the chance to sit in each of the cars? Only sitting, not driving (I don´t expect that much). Because to me it seems, that you´re just talking.. WITHOUT ANY experience. Sorry

lloyd dixon Yes but they matched the top of the line Focus against the lower version of the Megane. And there is a difference between the 250 and the 265 irelevant of how big the difference is, the 265 was the fastest FWD car ever around the nurburgring...whilst the 250 is well discontinued.

I wonder if I could ship a Focus RS over here.
I bought an RS250 a few weeks ago, its a brilliant car, its handling is amongst the best and its grip is monumental. In a road like that, it should have easily destroyed a Focus RS. Maybe they should have found someone who can properly drive. The proof is in the Nurburgring lap time.
@tn21beer thats the exact point of the ford, you said it spot on sir, i totally agree.
THUMBS UP tn21beer's comment!!!
Well...Iám a focus RS fan to the bone...but I love that Megane just as much as i love the Focus... difficult for me to decide..It´s like deciding wich is your favorite test... you know, imposible
the renault looks awesome, the rear reminds me of the scirocco
@LiamDeth someone brought up the r26r, which is what i was commenting about.
The Focus dosnt look like its trying, especially on the straights where its meant to be faster.
This guy has no idea what he's talking about.
This dude is my favouite car reviewer.
Evo magazine did a track test of these two, the Cupra R and Golf GTI and the Megane won hands down. Beat the Focus by 2 seconds on a wetter track!
The Focus is looking old. I'm biased though, my Megane 250 Cup is being delivered March 1st...... :o)
the good thing with Ford is that you'll still enjoy it in 10 years
you can't think of buying a 5yo hot french car without talking what did, do or will go wrong with it
@HipHopBible08 i thought the Cobalt SS/TC was teh quikest matching a BMW

I love both these cars. But i would take the Ford, because it is slightly better. And i have always been a Ford-guy. :) But the Megane would be my second choise, its awsome.
depends on how you approach the pb of making the fastest traction in the world. But testing such car on then nurburgring was something Renault already know and from the analysis of the datas to the study of the chassis I think Renault used his exeprience in F1. Full equiped doesn't mean nothing to me.Full equiped has no sense and focus is not made for the track so I don't see how it could be better than the Renault.
Both cars are pretty good looking and certainly fast. Its only logical that the Ford is faster because of its more powerful engine.
Sorry to hear that mate, I can honestly say and from experience you must have got a lemon!
And as I touched on, im not "guessing" as you put it :P.
what was this all about. first he starts saying really good things about the Megane 250 and when he almost said he prefers it he went with the Focus RS
megane makes the focus look "old".the focus is for chavs with a few quid.the vents on the focus should work well with a burberry cap and stone island jacket.
no doubt renault will develop the 250 into the rs250r.and again give its customers another peach like the r26r,which at the moment is the fastest fwd production car to lap the nurburgring.
i do like the look of the focus but its, well, like an old shirt, comfortable once loved but "old".
Besides, Camaro wasn't even designed in USA.
oh, how i wish renault would come to the states.
