Grew up w/Castlevania so I love dark action platformers. KoD isn't one of the best but has superb art direction. The games designed well around all the forms for some great replayability. I love that they let you go through it all in human form- most devs would force you to pick one monster form to continue.
This game desperately needed a password system. It's absurd that you have to play it all in one go, even with unlimited continues.

Crazy, one of my buddies is making this game for me soon. I was going to have him make it this week but then I found out about Gunman's Proof and needed that one first! King of Demons is next. I would just import it but man, I have seen the price for that game jump pretty high, as of late. Great review and still one of my favorite channels!

the snes sure had gorgeous art. Such a leap from the 8 bit era. I remember when it launched, maio world was mesmerizing. Never felt such a jump from one gen to the next.
SNES to N64 was a similar milestone for its time.

I love this game! The controls are somewhat stiff but eventually you get used to them. Also, you can eat the fairy enemies to regain health, which imo is a nice touch.
I ordered the reproduction today. Looking forward to playing this.

THe game is great, completed it multiple times. There are different endings depending on what forms you using in the game. I think there are 3 endings: 1 - complete the game only using human, 2 - using any demon form and 3 - using final demon form (this is kind of dramatic and, beleive it or not is considered "good")
I've tried many times to find out who devleoped this game but I can't find out. It says KSS most places but they were a publishing house so was it really them? Did they start developing too? Did they outsource? Did they hire devs by contract? Some places say "Nihon Soft System" to whom there is no information whatsoever. The game kind of reminds me of Dragon Fighter NES however so maybe Natsume shadow-developed it?

Sega has some games that look and play like this. Alien Solider has some really crazy enemies.
this was a weird game, definitely worth a try.
you should review Parodius for super famicom...there are 2 , i always forget the good one. the one with kid dracula because he is pretty overpowered with his homing attack.

What about Musya: The Classic Japanese Tale of Horror. That has some weird imagery aswell. Psycho Dream is also really weird, but not as pretty.
Hyper Iria and Ushio to Tora are also similiar, but more cartoonish due to their anime roots.

There's a reissue of this game coming out later this month.
This is a goodie, and weirdly enough, I actually like playing as the regular guy more than the different transformations, the hit detection on his gun shots seem a bit more forgiving, but maybe I just haven't played it enough to get used to it. Anyway, great review as always.
If you're scrounging for more SFC goodness to review, give Hyper Iria a try, it's really solid, also getting expensive for a real cart, but if folks just want a new game to try out on emulator or what-have-you, yeah, it's good, make it go. I also won't judge you if you need to check out gamefaqs or something to help navigate some of the non-linear level design.

I really apologize for being obnoxious but it's pronounced "Mah jew oh", the romanization is "Jyuu" but it's just pronounced as straight "Juu" in Japanese. Three "syllables" here.

I know this is from like 4 years ago so maybe you've had more practice since then, but when you see two 'U's in a row in Japanese it just about always indicates one slightly elongated U, rather than two that need to be pronounced separately. So 'Ma-Joo-Oh' rather than 'Ma-Joo-Oo-Oh.'

Get Sweet Home on NES. Also Clock Tower on SNES, Innsmouse, Mushya: A Classic Tale of Japanese Horror on SNES, Super Castlevania, and a BUNCH MORE. Even Contra III: Alien Wars has some pretty damn dark imagery...
Does anyone have any recommendations for other hellish looking video games? It reminds me of Akira Wicked City and other dark anime from around this timeb

maybe Koji Igarashi was influenced by majuu ou that he decided to reboot the whole akumajo dracula x/castlevania story into rondo of blood and symphony of the night kind of castlevania

I've bean this game only once, but assume there are multiple endings, as is the norm with a majority of Japan Only titles.

Have you played Blackthorne/Blackhawk? It's pretty similar to this, relatively small sprites and detailed animation. Goes for a badass Terminator-2-ish vibe mixed together with Conan the Barbarian, pretty interesting.
