  • I saw the Schmincke retro sets advertised on Jackson's website and leading up to my birthday I thought I would treat myself. I didn't need a travel set as I'm curated and made my own palette for that but I'm a sucker for retro things especially with an art deco feel. It turns out I was getting a birthday present from my husband after all (being so close to Christmas it is never a sure thing). But if the travel palette that I've created gives up the ghost then this will be put into use as it is actually quite light considering its robust quality.
For my travel palette see my video here:

I also added an A. Gallo colour Roman Black Earth to my collection.

This was such a lovely video to watch. Thank you for making it❤️
I had to laugh at your viridian comment because I am SO with you when it comes to disliking viridian 😂❤️ and like, I know it’s not meant to be used straight out of the pan and it does make absolutely gorgeous mixes but I’m still reluctant to go out of my way to purchase it😂
I’ve ordered this vintage palette and it’s in transit but I know when I get it, it’s going to take me a few months to actually unwrap the pans and use them. Purely because it’s special packaging and it’s difficult for me to use very special things without feeling bad. Thankfully, I always keep a backup pans of my favourite colours so I will use those in the tin for now and when those pans are finished, I’ll muster up the courage to break the seal on the special retro colours😊 and I’ll definitely stick those adorable little labels in my swatch book!🥰
I’m very excited to have such a portable tin and have a slightly more limited choice of colours. I like a bit of a challenge and I find some limitations to be inspiring and I enjoy finding creative ways to work within them😊

Thank you for such a lovely comment and from a non-fan of viridian too! Give me a readymade, natural green any day. It is so difficult unwrapping them when they look so lovely in their tin. That's a great idea about using up what you have and putting them in the palette for now. I also like having a challenge so I like to mix things up and use different palettes. I'm really liking just bringing in odd things for the day to the outside studio. It really helps to focus and maybe try things that I haven't been using.

Want…need…it is a fine line. I also noticed the change in Jackson’s shipping. I was going to order 2 neocolour IIs because paying $3.00 shipping on $4.00 worth of product is way cheaper than buying them somewhere in Canada where I’d have to spend $150 to get free shipping😂. And I hesitated at the new quoted shipping price. Thank you for sharing this palette. I was intrigued by the retro items.

I know that's what gets me when you're buying something small and low value. I remember creating an order from Blick's in the US and the starting rate is $25 even if one pencil! And I just did shipments of my handmade watercolour - one to the UK and one to BC - and the BC one was more expensive! Shipping is so prohibitive in North America.

I might be wrong, since I can’t feel thickness of the paper with the squares and layout on it, but I think it’s for doing your swatch on

Yes but people complain wanting a larger swatch out. I generally keep the ones provided for myself.

You made me smile with your beginning comments because they’re so true. I haven’t been purchasing from Jackson’s for a few months because I really dislike their new website. I noticed that if you get on the old Jackson’s website by error, the Canadian prices are actually cheaper than on their new Canadian website. I am wondering if they are converting UK prices to US prices then to Canadian prices and that is why the new website prices are higher. I can’t think of any other reason for the discrepancy. I have been disappointed because some items that used to be available to Canadians on the old website, we are no longer able to purchase on the new Canadian website. I didn’t know about the shipping change so I am glad you mentioned it. I hope you have a great birthday and trip.

I noticed a while ago that if you kept the prices in sterling you had access to other products especially Holbein that have import issues to Canada. And now with the new website it's worse. I will try to use that tip of being on the UK site and see how it goes. When you are just buying a few pencils and the total value isn't huge I tended to go for the cheaper non-tracking option but now that's gone. 😒

It does have a similar build quality - robust but surprisingly light

Can this tin fit 4 extra half pans across the middle?
