Spring-Summer Sketchbook Tour 2024
I'm finally getting around to show you my Spring/Summer handmade sketchbook. Well March until July when I finished it. Where did the summer go?
Make yourself a tea and sit back and wait for Finn the kitten (who turned 1 last month!) makes an appearance.
Some things I mentioned in this video...
I like following @landscapeartclub on Instagram and each week they have prompts. This is so handy for when you just want to create but are stuck for inspiration.
Along the same lines but live are the first Thursday of every month World Street view meetups hosted by Jenny Adam and Eleanor Doughty. Check out the latter's link here to sign up

A Mini Summer Art Haul from Jackson's
Просмотров 26214 дней назад
I picked up a few things from Jackson's this summer. I wanted to add to my urban sketching gouache palette. The one Daniel Smith gouache that I have has stayed pretty stable (not cracking) so I picked up Payne's Grey and Moonglow. These are very similar, yes, but different enough and I like them for mixing and shadows. I also picked up some white Neo Color I crayons as my local art supply store...

Back in March this year (2024) I didn't know how much I would need a city break and art weekend when I registered for the Urban Sketchers Chicago Chapter's symposium weekend. I'm so glad I did. Reorganizing my Gansai Watercolour
Просмотров 711Месяц назад
My dad gave me this old printer's drawer for my studio (he was so happy that I wanted it). I thought it was actually smaller than it is. This has huge deep drawers and I thought how perfect it would be to have my gansai watercolour all together and arranged by colour. It would make it so much easier than having them strewn about in their set boxes and I have the space to have them out here too ...
Stone Paper Sketchbook Tour - Spring

I just loved working with the stone paper from Aboveground Art Supplies (thanks Ann for the heads-up on this). It's cheap and coloured pencils work like a dream on this mineral, smooth paper. These are great pencils for hair, fur, and fine details. Devastated that Derwent doesn't offer the full 120 open stock anywhere anymore. Especially not even the 120 tin for Derwent Artist. These pencils are wonderful for artists that sell "prints" of their works. Very Sad the price point is now so HIGH to get the full range in a wooden box that would Never be used. HUGE Tragic Decision on Derwent's part!!! 😭😡

They are great pencils. I hate when they don't do open stock on things. In Toronto I can't find a shop that offers the Caran d'Ache Luminance pencils open stock. I definitely can't afford to get a full set of those!

@@eileenreillyarts1229 unfortunately I can only stock my Luminance pencils when Blick's or Cult pens or Hyatts has a sale for open stock. Although, when the full 100 sets go on sale at these stores sometimes the full set is a better price.... Blick sometimes has bulk buy for pencils but it's tricky... unless it says mix/match they may or may not give the bulk price unless it's 12 of the exact same color.... Best of luck honey.

Please don’t put yourself down like that by saying “ like I’m some kind of Saint”, I recently lost my father and I looked after him and although he wasn’t very unwell but had mobility issues. It was my privilege. However there are a lot of people out there that don’t have any relationship with their parents or will even look after them if they’re unwell. I think it is a beautiful thing that you looked after your mum and it is very taxing, emotionally and physically. No one is accusing you of being a saint, but being a wonderful daughter you’re definitely guilty as charged. Sometimes it’s okay to take a compliment. It was my privilege and honour to look after my father after he had looked after me for so long.

Thank you so much for that. You don't know what that means. I'm so sorry about your dad. I'm so glad you both had each other. I have two older brothers and you're right there are people out there who wouldn't look after their parents because I have one and the other was very much not wanting to admit to the seriousness of the situation and so hasn't talked to me since. He prefers to live in a bubble. He at least calls them once a week and visits them every couple of weeks. I've scaled back to calling only once a day. It was getting tiring and I couldn't even remember to do things for myself like ordering my own meds or making an appointment.

Thanks for you "SHOW OFF" of grate samples. I am not familiar with the paint brush cleaner. Meaning I normally use soap and water, and not sure if there is something, better. WHAT I DO KNOW, and you may want to get, what I use often even when I did in acrylic on a canvas to remove something I did not like, also use it when I get paint on clothes, or just grease when cooking on clothes, RED spray bottle called AWSOME carpet stain remover, still sold at dollar tree. I have spent GOOD money to clean sofa, chairs and carpet, but this does it for me, NO Lighten in colors, if clothes been Washed before, and never turn water when washing pink, red, or black. SOME clothes , not sure why will bleed when washed. We use to have nice art stores, but DICK BLICK hardly has anything, Charge a lot for mechanical pencils sold cheaper at Walmart. Disagree with your comment regarding the barrels not all being “smooth” as a sign that the Artists line is of a “lesser quality” than other lines from them. The only thing it shows is poor quality control. The machines responsible for lacquering/finishing the pencils barrels clearly needed maintenance. I recently received my 120 Artists box set and NONE of my pencils barrels had issues. These pencils absolutely need to be sharpened before even swatching to get a true idea of how they lay down. And they need better quality paper than what you used. It’s actually not a sign of bad/lesser quality if a pencil doesn’t work well on any surface one chooses. It’s like people thinking if a colored pencil doesn’t color great in an Amazon paper coloring book that it’s a reflection of the pencils….which couldn’t be further from the truth. ❤

It is sort of similar but because Yupo is polypropylene it is more "slippery" to deal with. I just tested both out together with the same amount of watercolour and the Yupo took longer to dry. The stone paper being a mineral will allow for some absorption. It also looks less"streaky". On the Yupo you will probably see the brush marks or the way the watercolour has dried. And of course this is just a spot of colour and not a painting where you will probably have colours going on top of each other and so that can create challenges. I think I prefer the stone paper but then I haven't been using much watercolour in these sketchbooks. I like to use something that is watersoluble if I do instead like Neocolor or tempera sticks.

@@awatercolourist Yes I've heard that too about the yellowing. I think that would be more likely if things were exposed to light for long periods of time. I would think disposable palettes would be even worse over time but I don't know of any testing that has been done on them as they are meant to be disposable. I'm looking into waterproof tissue although that wouldn't be opaque. You would have to mount it to a backing. I have some on order so I will test that here at some point.

I really like reviews of art books and agree that library books are a great way to peruse books before purchasing. My library is smaller so I like that in Ontario we can do inter library loans from anywhere in the province. It means that I can access library books somewhere like Toronto, etc by just asking my librarian to request them for me absolutely free. I have been enjoying watercolour books from Thomas Szabo, Geoff Kersey, Terry Harrison and Gordon MacKenzie. My all time favourite watercolour book is The Complete Watercolorist’s Essential Notebook by Gordon MacKenzie. The first part of the book covers the basics and how to put together a composition. The second part of the book is everything you will ever need to know about landscapes in depth.

Thank you for the suggestions! Libraries are wonderful and should be treasured and open for all and they do so much beyond books. I love interlibrary loans. I remember doing that at university too because even with huge collections like TPL or UofT, they don't have everything.

I love travel brushes… great video!! I’ve been wanting to try the Rosemary & Co, but so hard to get in Canada (without duties/fees). I have a set of Tintoretto and love them. I especially like that the cases/handles are black and not as reflective as the silver. I also love my Escoda Prado travel brushes. I like brushes with firmer bristles. I have the Princeton Neptune travel brushes, but they’re too soft for me, so I keep them in a travel kit that I don’t use as often. All of my travel brushes are round and I’d like to pick up a flat or filbert brush (or two) for gouache.

      @eileenreillyarts1229 3 месяца назад

Yes, there's something about the black and slim case for the Tintoretto that I love. I wish more stores would sell the Rosemary and Co. brushes here but I think there are issues with the shipping and wholesale cost to the deal. I don't have any filbert travel brushes. Now I must research that! 😂

  • @anitaanderson2326

You have a nice selection of travel brushes. I have one Tintoretto size 6 which I used once, closed it into the handle and can’t get it to reopen. I also have the black Escoda set of 3 travel and the red Escoda set of 3 which have various types & sizes of travel brushes. I highly recommend them but I just saw them on Jackson’s website and they have increased the price $75 per set since I bought them in 2021. I have two of Jackson’s own brand which I like, are relatively inexpensive and rumoured to be made by Escoda. They even look like Escoda brushes. I am going to look into your flat brushes. Thank you for sharing.

I’m glad to hear things are settling down for you with your mom’s illness. I just purchased the 27 new chromoflows from Bromley’s so I guess I also missed one pencil. They must have it away from the others marked as new. This was my first time buying from them but the process was easy and I also had freebies added to my cart. I hope they don’t take too long arriving in Canada and customs doesn’t charge too much. Thank you for talking about them. It’s always nice to have another art supply store on my list.

There are still issues with my mom but at least I am having more of a schedule. I don't know what happened either to the 1 chromaflow! I swear it said 28 items in the basket. Maybe it was out and did a final calculation at the end? It was a seamless process with Bromley's, though. They sent it out so quickly, I didn't get hit by duty and I think I got it in in under 2 weeks.

This was such a lovely video to watch. Thank you for making it❤️ I had to laugh at your viridian comment because I am SO with you when it comes to disliking viridian 😂❤️ and like, I know it’s not meant to be used straight out of the pan and it does make absolutely gorgeous mixes but I’m still reluctant to go out of my way to purchase it😂 I’ve ordered this vintage palette and it’s in transit but I know when I get it, it’s going to take me a few months to actually unwrap the pans and use them. Purely because it’s special packaging and it’s difficult for me to use very special things without feeling bad. Thankfully, I always keep a backup pans of my favourite colours so I will use those in the tin for now and when those pans are finished, I’ll muster up the courage to break the seal on the special retro colours😊 and I’ll definitely stick those adorable little labels in my swatch book!🥰 I’m very excited to have such a portable tin and have a slightly more limited choice of colours. I like a bit of a challenge and I find some limitations to be inspiring and I enjoy finding creative ways to work within them😊

Thank you for such a lovely comment and from a non-fan of viridian too! Give me a readymade, natural green any day. It is so difficult unwrapping them when they look so lovely in their tin. That's a great idea about using up what you have and putting them in the palette for now. I also like having a challenge so I like to mix things up and use different palettes. I'm really liking just bringing in odd things for the day to the outside studio. It really helps to focus and maybe try things that I haven't been using.

What a cool option for a studio space, rather than letting the buildings just sit there unused for a period of time. I can definitely see the benefit of having a spot outside your home as well. Even just limiting the supplies and options you have in your ‘out of home’ studio might inspire creativity since you wouldn’t be overwhelmed with all the choices in your home studio. Very exciting development!! ❤ I hope you are seeing improvement in your mom’s condition. You definitely need a little break from the stress of providing care all the time.

It is such a great use of the space and there are so many needing studio spaces. And you're right, I like the challenge of having less media around. Mom is getting better. She still has memory issues and feels overwhelmed by it all but luckily she is getting professional care at home a couple of times a day so that helps.

I tend to walk along King St as they make it less hospitable to drivers because there's a stretch that means cars have to make a turn within a block. Hope you had a lovely coffee.
