Thank you Heidi! I graduated from FIT with Fashion & Graphic Design degrees. I also majored in Surface Design. I didn't want a fashion design job because it started out at $25k & I have children. I became a CAD/Textile Designer & started at $65k. Best decision ever. I still get to draw & design pretty things & go to the shows. I love it!
Aw, thanks Talya! Glad you have been enjoying. Make sure your Illustrator skills are top notch! Check out my free Ultimate Guide to Illustrator for help with that ;) bit.ly/UGtoIllustratorYT
Hi Heidi, I've been in apparel my entire career. I started out as a fabric/trim buyer after college and ended doing product development/sourcing. And now starting my own loungewear/sleepwear brand. With all my experience in the industry, I am still learning everyday. I came across your podcast and love it so much! No other podcasts is as real as yours. You are performing a great service for beginners as well seasoned veterans in this business. Thank you!!!
Hey world! Design is really not sexy or glamorous. It’s a TON of work and pretty thankless. I did CAD for a while and I truly prefer it to bring a designer. I just listen to music, RUclips videos or Netflix shows (either splitting the screen or using two monitors or watching ie. listening to videos) and working, the day flies by and I made a really good salary as a CAD artist.
When I finished fashion school (2016), I looked into the different fashion jobs, simply because EVERYONE wants to do design and I don't want to design for a brand that's not my own. CAD designer, technical designer, product designer are my top options. I used to do CAD for freelance and I'm going back to doing that soon. After business school, I'm MOST likely going back to fashion school, for technical design since I really want to and need to understand the technical aspect of fashion.
I’m 16 and I LOVE fashion. I’m a junior in high school so I’m at the time where we are talking about life as an adult. I have no interest in doing a office job endless it has something to do design :) I know that I’m probably talking way over my head but I know I want to work in fashion. I used to dream about working with fashion shows I New York, things like that. Anyways I would really appreciate it if u have any feed back on what I could get a head start in researching or what I should look at for volunteering or job ideas to think about. ☺️
I'm 16 too and I have the absolute same ideas as you for my future omgg. I love fashion and I really want to work in this domain when I'll be an adult but I don't know how to start bcz all my peeps have desk jobs/office jobs.
Lol I know this is an old comment and you are older now, but I am also 16 and want to work in fashion. I love the idea of it and even with the hard parts, I want to work I fashion so bad. I’m towards the top of my class, but I still don’t feel like I can compete in the industry, so I’m looking for any advice on RUclips. Sorry for the long comment, I’m just excited to see other teens trying to figure out how to get into it too.
I’m 20 and I graduated earlier this year with a degree in finance. I’ve been in love with fashion since I was old enough to know what it was. Unfortunately I’m a terrible designer but I do have a really good eye. I’ve just started working in a complete finance oriented industry but I desperately want to get into fashion some day and I have no idea where to start or what’s even out there for me.
Hi Sew Heidi, I’m currently studying Fashion Design. I had a whole other career in my twenties but am going back to school in my 30s because I’ve always wanted to do something more creative. I’m taking a Fashion focused Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator class right now and I could see myself doing this as a job. Here are some questions I had for you: to be a CAD designer do I need hand drawing skills? Can I intern for a CAD designer? Are CAD designers freelance or full time jobs? Do I need to learn InDesign? How do I get a CAD designing job (for example, can I just make a portfolio of my work rather than getting a degree in Fashion Design)? Thank you! I appreciate your videos and guidance.
in asia..almost 1 person usually does those 6-7 job mention. And it's almost a must requirement for a fashion designer /merchandiser job, that you know from designing the clothes, drawing illustrating, A.I , graphics/ cad, knows about technical pattern making (even you don't know much abt sewing) . Merchandising , budgeting, look for vendor \factory. Negotiate pricing, sourcing ,chasing the shipment date, q.c . Allocation of stock to shops. Visual and some times sales.Only done by 1 person . And if you are a senior designer, you have to forecast the next year trends ,colors and seasons collection directions. And they paid quite low.
Each of the job roles can depend on the size of the company - at smaller companies you will have more responsibilities. And in general, you are worked really hard in the fashion industry since it is so competitive, meaning you will be required to wear a lot of hats! I suggest only going into this career if you *really* love it and want to work hard :)
I have worked at small brands in addition to large chain store brands in the US and never had a separate CAD designer. These days you are lucky to have an assistant. You’re expected to do your own tech work as well. The industry is moving toward consolidating roles. ESPECIALLY in a tough market. And the more investment conglomerates buy up brands with no understanding of how things work, the more they expect designers to do it all themselves.
wish i would have found this video 10 years ago. had to learn the truth about the fashion world on my own!! went through so many disappointing experiences and doing free work!. nobody can survive like that!! thanks for this video will be looking into these other jobs with higher pay!!
thank u heidi. this is awesome knowledge. im a technical designer. i create designs from inspirations in 2D. and then sew them myself into 3D. but its super cool because the 3D design looks exactly like the 2D. its super earning. my customers love me for that. they call being super unique. n to me its fun.
Thank you for this video! It was really helpful. I have a degree in journalism, but currently work as a graphic designer for a small local company that does custom dye-sublimated webbing for all sorts of applications. My pay is terrible and I want to get a better-paying job elsewhere, but feel like my skills not directly related to this job have atrophied. CAD Designer, as you described here, sounds like it uses a lot of the same skills I use in my current job, which is a form of surface design, so I'm going to look more into the possibilities there. Thanks again!
Hello! I've been wanting to work in the fashion industry, but never had the slightest thought of being a fashion designer. so i'm really thankful for this video. this video really helped me to choose which career i want to pursue. But, does every country have these career on every fashion company? or should i move to another country like china, america, and other countries where the big brand HQ lies?
This is very interesting. I myself am an assistant garment technician, and have been doing so for the last 2.5 yrs. It's got its up and downs like any job, but it's fun. I'm always running back and forth btwn factories, cutting rooms and pattern graders (im in NYC'S Garment district) which can be tiresome but time flies and deadlines wait for noone...but it's fun nonetheless. Being an assistant and as a part timer, i get paid okay. About ~30 - 35k. On the side im also going to school for nutrition (true rooted passion)... but im at that cross roads on which i should continue with. Both are rewarding.
Hi Heidi. I'm getting ready to shoot a video to give practical advice to people trying to go for the fashion design jobs after 15 years there myself via NYC and London. I'm going to link this video to mine as I think this is an incredible REAL LIFE resource exposing aspiring fashionistas and "os" to what is possible in the industry. Awesome video!
Mam, can you please tell me what I've to do for my masters to become a product manager. Is there a job similar to this in a fashion magazine?.. Please help me out.
Yeah, maybe much more satisfying and worth it, considering the competition. Some of them are creative as well, like cad designer (like you said it's between fashion, graphic and technical) and visual merchandiser/stylist or merchandising. Awasome video! ;)
Love this video, short and to the point and very informative! I'm interested in pursuing either the CAD designer or Technical Designer roles. I have no formal fashion training but have been sewing for myself and my kids from store bought patterns for over 25 years, so the basic knowledge is there. I have a tech background and have and know adobe software. I'm not looking to be a designer(so I don't know if that eliminates the CAD job option), but would love, love, love, to do the other technical stuff. My question is, how do I get into this industry, where do I get the training? Who do I contact, are there apprenticeships in which to learn? Any suggestions from those of you already doing this would be very appreciated!
Hi Heidi, I just watched your video and it was really informative. I'm actually an Interior Designer and I'm designing various products for retail. I've been and ID for 25 years (never went to college for it - go figure) and I've been researching everything imaginable to do with my latest venture and I thought your video was not only applicable, but really helpful. I'm at the ugh stage of finding the right manufacturer. I'm creating a tech pack for the latest manufacturer that I hope is the right one and I'll keep following you because I like your low key approach to supporting those of us in the industry. Looking forward to more from you, Allison
CAD and Tech Designer are my top picks. Actually, Textile Design is the dream job, but all three are so close I'd really be happy doing any of them. My BFA is in Graphic Design. I did work in that industry for some years, but I'm more of a technical type so I wound up in prepress and print production. That was fine, but I LOVE textiles and I am not fond of advertising materials. I already sew, weave, knit, crochet, quilt, and dye yarn and fabric, and am currently studying Fashion Merchandising and Product Development and taking Tech Design and a Computers for Apparel class and LOVING IT. L-O-V-I-N-G it. You're right, it IS the perfect blend of fashion and graphic design. I have 25+ years of very in-depth experience with Adobe products (Illustrator, Photoshop) largely due to working in prepress, and the skills have transferred so seamlessly into the Tech Design-related courses that I can't believe it took me this long to find out this career path even exists. So all I really need is to finish this degree (which will be within 18 months at the latest), have a bang-up portfolio, and go out and land that job. I also think that working "behind the scenes" is probably a better fit for someone a tad older. I'm not 25 anymore, LOL. I can't compete with the 20-something fashion designers. And that's OK! I really LOVE playing with Illustrator, drawing flats and floats, making textile patterns, applying them to the flats/floats, playing with position... I'm also an Excel guru so Tech Designer and tracking all the spec sheets and POMs is right up my alley.
Hi, I’m in FIT right now and about to graduate with my associates do you think I should continue and get my bachelors degree? My job thoughts are Visual merchandiser or Cad design. And I’m wondering should I start working with my associates or should I continue and get my bachelors?
I have diploma in architecture but i decided to pursue degree in retail management to be a visual merchandiser or any job related to fashion 🥺 im still anxious bcs the course is completely different..
So I’m in year 9 and we have to decided what gces we want to take I really want to work in fashion as it’s something I really enjoy yet at the same time I quite like the idea of being a makeup artist but also enjoy decorating like for example planning the design of a place or event like winter wonderland I know that those 3 things are so different and don’t really fit together I was wondering if there was a job that kinda fit that all or if it would be possible to have like a career in fashion/makeup and do decorating/planning on the side
If you're interested in both fashion and makeup maybe look into Editorial Makeup Artists. Although your job will consist of makeup, you'll have the chance to work with the designer and collaborate on what type of look to create for a runway/magazine/photoshoots
I am a product developer and I am very boring because I am a more creative type. Although creativity may be applied to problem solving, I prefer using my creativity in choosing or developing artwork, deciding on fabrics or in styles. It is a great responsability and it is way hard work. If you are in the right company and developing the right product, it could be really great fun. Classic and casual menswear developing is such a pain.... oh well maybe it was just a bad day!
If you already work at a brand, have you tried asking to help with parts of the design process? I am sure you could create an opportunity for yourself :)
And that is why I am listening. First of all thank you. You are going great job. Yes I love designing garments but I gave never dreamt of hand illustrations job, but more the technical part of it. True is I am very analytical and except my fashion alter ego LOL I am logistic by my hart and soul. And yes shipping from China is even 60 days. 😆 however your ideas are giving me so valuable insights. Amazing
Can these jobs be applicable with a fashion design degree? I am sophomore in college and I’m trying to figure out what is the best paying job I can get with a fashion design degree once I graduate
Hey sweetie ! Currently I've completed my bachelor's on the basis of computer science. But I'm passionate about fashion, design, modelling and stuff since childhood. I'm motivated by turning my love of fashion into a career. I've always been fascinated with every aspect of the fashion industry. Working in a fashion environment is my top career objective. A job in fashion would be a dream come true for me. So is there any career for me as a computer graduate ? Like Let's say animation design, filming and video, graphic design.. I mean it can be anything on design..
I have my own company, which is in the startup phase, so naturally I am searching for funding opportunities. This is an amazing video with great insight, one my strong points is CAD design so I will be looking into jobs regarding that!
I’m here because I was just told that despite having the ability to create, I’m not the best drawer. So that makes it almost impossible to be a fashion designer. Crazy.
Great video, Thank you. I’m from IT background and doing an IT Job. But my soul interest is doing a fashion related job. Any help how to get first job or enter into fashion industry.🙏🏻 From Canada :)
Love this! And if you are planning on launching your own brand singlehandedly, you will be ALL of these things. Which IS as terrifying as it sounds lol
We share opps inside our private freelancer group - if you're looking to hire someone, you can email learn at sewheidi dot com and we can get it posted for you ;)
This is extremely helpful because I'm really anxious whether I'm gonna get a job in fashion or not. Thank you so much!💜🩷 I hope everydat is the best day 4 u
Apparently she doesn't know who you real front person really is. Its us in Production were the ones that actually make sure everything gets done. And us Production Manages deal with all the product development and sourcing. A lot of companies don't use product developers and Sourcing specialists because us production managers do it. Production is the most stressful.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Denise, and while that can be the set up at some places, many companies do use product developers. There are many variables (company size, etc) and there are a hundred ways to organize a team. A title is just a title -- it's really the workload that defines the role 😉
I work for a pretty big company. We do private and licensed brands and my work load is hectic. We use have product developers, product managers and tech designers but some how my production coordinators and assistants ended up with the work load. But production we bring things to live and many don't know.

😭😭😭I finished my AS in Fashion Merchandise and Management with the highest GPA. Not even one job offer, I was too old at 30 something. Eventually, I got a job in a complete different field that paid me really good money. Soon I will retire and I planning to open my own fashion business. Finally I will be working on what I’m most excited about, fashion, trends, fabrics 😂.
I didn't forget you, I was sharing more uncommon jobs ;) And remember that often, depending on the size of the company, the exact name of the role varies! Sometimes production is bundled into design / technical.
I know AutoCad and I used to draw my own clothes. Hmmm And im in need of a new career. I do have some business knowledge. I do have some college experience in office administration. I did want my Associate Degree. I did work in retail. I do know color Hmmmm I don't know.. School expensive. Im still paying for that one. Hmmm im thinking. I used to be an office cashier i had to do shipping and receiving. I am a people person. I know how to sew too.
Thank you Heidi!

How did you get into CAD design ?? Like what type of degree did you pursue ?
What would you need to study in order to go into this career?

Thanks very much 😊
You're welcome 😊
loved watching you. exciting information.thanks
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed!
How you guys get so mant options and knowledge.. I m still confuse what to do in my life
Heidi, how does someone go about connecting with factories?
I have some podcast episodes and blog posts that will help you! successfulfashiondesigner.com/?s=Factory
Thanks for a great video, I would love to see a dedicated video on fashion buying.
I will add to the list!
Amazing
Awesome!
thank you so much for this
Hi Heidi
What courses should one learn to become a CAD designer?
So awesome to hear!!!
How are you doing now?!
Excellent video thank you
Thank you for this video! Super useful
You're welcome Fiona! What was your favorite part?!
Every second of it! :D
Great explanation.
Thanks - glad you enjoyed :)
Thankssss heidi!
Welcome!!
I’m here because I was just told that despite having the ability to create, I’m not the best drawer. So that makes it almost impossible to be a fashion designer. Crazy.
Don't listen to this person. I cannot draw and know many others as well who have still had successful fashion careers ;)
That's non-sense. If you can create, that's your way to visualize.
Great video, Thank you. I’m from IT background and doing an IT Job. But my soul interest is doing a fashion related job. Any help how to get first job or enter into fashion industry.🙏🏻
From Canada :)
Nice speech with details. Thank you
Hi Heidi. I have been working as a customs clearance agent now for almost 7 years. Can I do customs compliance coordinator as a freelancer?
Love this! And if you are planning on launching your own brand singlehandedly, you will be ALL of these things. Which IS as terrifying as it sounds lol
YESSS so true!!! But it can also be an insanely fun journey at the same time :) x
And I wouldn't change it for the world! x
Love it 😍

Can you talk about Personal Stylist jobs.
Not my area of expertise...
You should check out @schoolofstyle across social... They are the Best! ruclips.net/video/xFqaxdA-Thg/видео.html @laurenmessiah and @lukestorey teach the business of style like Heidi teaches about fashion. Just dive in & check out Lauren's YT channel ruclips.net/video/oRfjogWMe50/видео.html
Mam when you will upload new video?
Working on some, soon! ☺️
That is awesome and good for you!! It’s still quite a tough venture, I started my own brand too! Check my latest video 😜
Hello ma'am
I'm a tailor I love this job I'm from India but working in Sudan African state in 4years you have any job for me
Product management major!
Woot woot! Awesome :)
Wow you forgot us Production Managers. We are the most important of all because without us nothing gets done.
I already knew those jobs!
Good for you! Most people have NO idea ;)
Although merchandising requires analytic skills, proficient use of Excel etc...=(
Yes!! Honestly, ANY job requires the use of Excel - I consider it basic knowledge anymore, like using email :)
Heidi, I studied your Design to Development course. Which other more useful skills do we need to know in Excel, so I can deep dive into it?
Be good Designer
Wow she forgot Production.
We are the most important in the production process. Without us nothing gets done.
I didn't forget you, I was sharing more uncommon jobs ;)
And remember that often, depending on the size of the company, the exact name of the role varies! Sometimes production is bundled into design / technical.
does age mater? im 30
Definitely not! I wrote an awesome article about this on my blog successfulfashiondesigner.com/avoid-ageism-in-fashion/
नाइस वीडियो है बहन👌👌👌👌
Can anyone learn photoshop+illustrator by herself to deliver professional work??

Which one of these jobs would you say earn the most?
I mentioned it in the video 😝 Anything technical design or pattern making related earns more than creative design.
