For a long time I thought I wanted to study fashion design and then before going to uni I realized I loved fashion but I wasn't seeing myself being an actual fashion designer. This series is so great because it makes you understand that there's a lot more in the fashion world and there's a place for everyone. I'm studying graphic design now but I really want to get in the fashion industry in the future!
One of my favourite videos out of this series! Paul Smith and Judd Crane really resonated with me in terms of finding out hidden career options within Fashion and it was so interesting to see how WGSN works and how they forecast - love their coverage of window displays from around the world.
Who's watching this series just for Alexa :)? Her voice is mesmerizing and she is knowledgeable about the industry and asks the right questions that lead to an informative conversation. Love it
This is so perfect for me right now. I'm finishing my business degree and a lot of the jobs I'm applying to have to do with fashion forecasting/buying/marketing. I know the job I apply to wont be nearly as glamourous as in the companies shown here but this still made me really really excited! Getting paid for stalking brands and influencers on instagram?? YES PLEASE 😁🙌
I Love this video and I am also a Fashion Merchandising Major..Watching the video makes me a bit nervous because there are hardly any people of color and afraid I wont fit in.
irepdesigner TV Yourself is your own obstacle. Work on yourself to let go of your negative mindset. How come Asians are so educated and successful at everything they set their minds into? It's their strong values and tough work ethic.
I hate that everyone is telling you to just be confident, it is more than just being confident. When you are a person of color, Particularly, Black, Latin, Middle Eastern etc. we are always the last or after thought especially in the fashion industry. We have so many skills and great ideas that we can bring to the table but are not able to have the same opportunities as others and that is the problem! It is now 2020 and I myself feel the same way and I've studied fashion in my undergrad and currently an art student. I just hope that the industry continues to progress in all areas. Let's just keep the faith that it will @Jimmy I feel your pain. Hope you are well!
I absolutely adore these videos, they are full of personality, aesthetics and useful information that has completely inspired me. I would love to work in the fashion industry!
it is such a great series to do, thanks for making those videos. I've always been so curious about what fashion industry can contribute to job outcomes. There's so much stereotypes about the fashion industry. Everybody is telling me that fashion does not going to get me a job. ;) thanks for the episodes
this is a great series with alexa as a perfect presenter. i have shared it with my two daughters (aged 11 and 13) to encourage them to think of fashion as a viable and accessible career. style is fun.
Loving this series! Not a fashion designer per say, tho just about anything artistic intrigues me, but as a creative, I find this super fascinating! Thanks for taking us behind the curtains.
Going down the Art School route, then interning and actually getting a job I realised that the industry wasn't for me. I guess I just like style and the expression that comes with it!.
really insightful video... through the conversation, I could not help but reason with - How can a buyer disconnect from always buying his taste and choice in clothes to actually curating a mixture of what everyone else would like? Any views?
I just started a job in the fashion marketing industry and these videos are so helpful! I got a little bit lucky that my hometown has such a huge media company in it, but I'd encourage anyone considering it to stick with what you feel you're good at because there are so many options!
Question I'm a 19 yr old guy who lives in NY. want a career in fashion, but haven't gone to college yet? What should I do? Also work in macys if that helps ..
I want to know why he says "get that out of your head" to people wanting to become designers, it's the designer that is the centre of mostly all of those jobs, without the product what would they do? Shouldn't we be encouraging more people to pursue a career as a designer? in the long run that will open more jobs for fashion buyers etc.
But I do agree with the "it's about today & tomorrow, you never really make it" we should focus on changing that system, not for the designer but because it's sad that once the next collection is showcased the previous collection slowly becomes irrelevant and that to me isn't very sustainable. Dying art.
+Andrew Semple i agree about encouraging as creativity is an amazing skill to nurture. a designer is a very specific concept in the way it is taught within universities etc. i think he meant it in a way that encourages individuals to not become disillusioned towards the industry, embracing jobs at the bottom of the triangle to step out of the subjective zone of creating a collection. behind each designer, is a team who understand the primary & secondary consumer which is integral to each collection because that is essentially who you are making these clothes for to help fund your next season. :)
As much as "fashion" has become much more flexible in terms of actually incorporating trends that are not exclusively "Parisian" in their essence, like the head of WGSN has pointed out, there's still something very disturbing when you realise that trends are being forecasted by such a narrow number of people who are clearly part of a same social strata. Trend fore-casting can be incredible, but the way it's done most of the times in the industry ends up being obtuse and scarily non-creative.
I don't get what exactly a buyer do? You know... He/she buys for a store from for example zara and gucci? Or she buys from a mass production for a brand like gucci? Can some one help me with my question? I cant get it...
iluvsps Get educated and you will get a job in the industry. You are the problem to your problem for refusing to cooperate with other people other than your skin tone. That's a f#cked up, selfish mindset you have.
Idea Alexa. Please help young girls buy less. Maybe experiment. Can you wear same item everyday. And learn to realize most people in world don’t have all their fast fashion options. Please help young people wake up to their contribution to global warming.
I remember watching this when it first came out and wanting to become a buyer. Didn't think it would happen at the time. This popped up on my suggestions and now I'm watching this as a buyer. Life's funny 🤣
Hey, can I please talk to you directly.. I'm looking to get a job as a trainee buyer and I'm trying to do some research but I'm struggling with some information 🙏🙏
So happy for you! I’m a sales person, I decided to move towards a fashion career a year ago. I want to become a buyer but not sure how to make that jump
I'm honestly a little disappointed in this episode, there is so much more to fashion buying than sitting at a fashion show and picking out clothes. Buyers must know their clientele's tastes and preferences, and not to mention have extensive knowledge of merchandising such as Open To Buy systems, six month planning, inventory maintenance, and vendor relations. I wish a little more of that was covered in this segment instead of just sweeping over the basic idea of fashion buying.
I am definitely glad they started this series, I think it helps people realize how much hard work goes in to not only the fashion industry, but the retail industry as well. Hopefully there will be another season that covers more of the retailing aspect of fashion.
its never to late. Many people are self trained in buying or fashion. If you want to be a designer you need to start at the bottom, work hard and have quality work. Same thing as buyer, if you have a business degree many buyers do. Hope that incorages you.
+watermelonprincess I would say just go out there and get experience. You dont have to have a degree in fashion to work in it. I've had a lot of experience in media and write for a fashion magazine, and I'm doing a Psych degree. I just spend my spare time doing media related things
+watermelonprincess fashion still needs you! so many of us studied it and didn't really get to learn much else while we did. the industry is 360 but most of us will graduate with only a 90 degree perspective. whatever you studied, you can work in fashion.
this is so perfect for me, I really interested in becoming a buyer but I'm not really sure where to start. Should I get an Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree in fashion? Any suggestion would be nice! :)
+angela lissette Interning is vital whatever degree you choose! Try interning as an admin assistant or buyers clerk and make some connections, follow them on social media and keep in touch on linkedin you never know what might come of it! On my course it was compulsory to complete an unpaid work placement each year so we'd have relevant experience and job contacts by the time we graduated, and a lot of people I know have been took on as juniors and buyers assistants at the companies they've interned for since leaving!
Get a bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising , FIT in new york is a great choice, and then the most important thing, experience ,try to get internship and be a buyer assiant is perfect

This series is amazing. I've recently in the past few years discovered a passion for fashion and my own style voice and this is just blowing my mind with how much goes into it all.
Planning to go back to college to take more fashion classes and then I found this series. THANK YOU! Started to believe busting into the industry would be damn near impossible, but this has opened my eyes and heart again. To be honest, I believe I'm now converted to British Vogue...
I'm studying marketing and looking forward to make a career in trend forecasting, fashion public relations, brand management or visual merchandising. Basically anything related to fashion and marketing.
Ahh, this series is perfect and so inspirational for me. I'm pursuing fashion management and was a bit shaky as to what options I would have upon graduating. Thank you British Vogue and Alexa Chung.
absolutely loving this series!! alexa is fantastic at keeping it simple and to the point while being informative, its so interesting to see inside the fashion industry!
Not even joking this series has made me have a whole different opinion on Alexa Chung. You are so babin' girl! So down to earth, I am so grateful that I stumbled across this series. Subscribed. xx
