I lived in Fort Davis when I was a kid from 1962 to about ‘66. Saw Lady Bird Johnson dedicate the fort as a National Historic Site. Great memories riding our horses around town!
Lady bird Johnson did so much for our state . Wildflowers, memorials, she really did beautify Texas.
My grandpa was born at Ft. Davis (the Army post) back when it was an active post. As a youth he learned all about mules and horses, and for a time was a mule skinner. His brother joined the Army and spent 30 as an enlisted man and served in the Philippine Insurrection and rode with Black Jack Pershing in in the Mexican campaign. He was stationed several times down at Brackettville, at Ft Clark Springs. That is another good fort to go visit.

I love Fort Davis. It’s a beautiful small town! If you are visiting the state park and need supplies or food, it’s great having this wonderful town nearby. It’s also close to Marfa and the observatory.

We went and spent a night in this neat town this past summer. We also stayed at Limpia Hotel.
The nature trails there show a lot of geologic uplifting in the hill there . And I'm never disappoints me to not see a rattlesnake unless it's one that I should of seen .
Some sort of volcanic rock, looks like old basaltic columns.
Hiking up to the top of the Davis mountains at the state park is a must do. My favorite place to stop and eat is at Cueva De Leon in town.

OMG you missed some of the best parts of Fort Davis. The nature trails you observed leads up and over the hill behind to Fort Davis State Park and Indian Lodge built in the 1930's by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). Too bad. Maybe you can cover it in a future video. Also the McDonald Observatory is only a few miles (14) up the road.......Glad I found your channel. I am enjoying your video's
Nicely done video. We were in Ft. Davis about a month ago. We stopped by to see Ft. Davis and I thought it was such a quaint town and drawn to all the historic buildings. We would have loved to have explored more of the area but high winds came up while we were touring the fort and we were in the worst windstorm l have ever seen. It was whiteout conditions, like a blizzard except with sand. We wound up getting a room in Van Horn just to get off the road.
And Ft Davis looks like a great town!

My wife and I went to Ft. Davis several years ago, on a my Harley, from Dallas. It took 10 hours to get there. Sadly, at the time, we both were working and because of that, we had to leave the next day without seeing much of anything there. Maybe sometime, some day, we’ll go back and see what we missed.

I lived in Ft Davis back in 1966-1968. My Dad worked construction and was building the new dome at the Observatory. We lived at the Limpia.
Summers I worked at the Prude Ranch, went rafting down the Rio Grande and went swimming at Balmorea Lake. For big doin's, we would drive to Marfa to see the lights or Alpine where the Sul Ross College was (female college). The deer hunting was good too. It was the first place I got real close to a tornado.
On the hunt to see old cabooses. Gotta get there now.

Yep too late unfortunately because of RUclips and Facebook people have discovered our once quiet little town and now come here by the droves making it difficult for us locals who moved here years ago because it was remote, undiscovered, and quiet. We have lost our quiet little town to tourism. So good job telling more and more people to come out here, just what we wanted.
Been going here since I was a kid, still love it I'm overdue to go back for another visit! My grandparents RV a lot growing up so they got me started on this area, great memories
Another neat Fort is Fort Mckavett. I found it when I was running from a hurricane when I lived in Port A. I stayed in the Ft Mckavett Inn which is pet friendly and why I wound up so far from home. Another to add to your bucket list if you haven't been there because you keep adding to mine with your wonderful videos :)
A caboose ice cream shop, how fun! The albino rattlesnake (I think that's what it was) was really cool. The hospital was sobering. I wonder if you ever see any ghosts around old places like that.
Yes it was albino. I do sometimes feel a presence in these historic places or maybe it's just me realizing the significance of where I'm standing.

I absolutely love your videos, I was raised in the West University, Houston, Texas area, which I absolutely loathe. It’s hard to believe I was racer at one time it seem like as a child. It’s such a nice close knit community from the Rice University all the way to Belair and southside And W. University Pl. where we lived off of Belmont and University Boulevard but I digress I went there as an adult and I cannot believe how much it stinks. It’s horrible, that’s not my point my point is I love West Texas I live in the area of Arizona that’s known as the Mogollon (that’s pronounced muggy-on) Rim an escarpment that’s over 7400 feet give or take, I live just below it in town called Strawberry, which is about 62 to 6800’ sea level so our weather is very similar to West Coast Michigan matter fact today we were been dumped on by over 6 feet of snow in the last four days, I’m getting to my point slowly recently in the last two years we’ve had every single home in our area sold out between Strawberry and pine by California people and they’re bringing their ridiculous culture with them, I have horse property and one lady asked me is there anything I can do about the flies because they’re going to her house she lives a mile and a half down the road I assured her they’re not my flies lol and of course, being raised in Texas I was not as kind as I normally am to people that are complete morons I don’t have patience for that, so I told her basically how it is so my point now is I really like West Texas and I was wondering because it’s so similar to here especially in the Fort Davis mountains area and there’s a community and they have large properties and I cannot believe how inexpensive they are in the Fort Davis resort I don’t think that’s what it’s called. It’s the Davis Mountain resort community. I was hoping you could drive through there and kind of explore it for us and let us know what the summer winter fall in spring temperatures are like I know it’s quite cold and up there which is fine with me, my property value in two years has gone from 189,000 to 475,000 and everyone thinks that great except for our taxes tripled so now for a house is barely 900 ft.² I’m paying over $4000 a year for property tax which I think is ridiculous so the more of the California people move into this region even though they’re just summer people because most of them moved to Phoenix Scottsdale typical spots Arizona it’s hot and then they realize they can’t handle the heat so they have to buy another house up here for the summertime. Anyways, I would love if you do in depth investigations on some of the mountains there in Texas West Texas and give us hard-core information. Whether climate taxes may be really neat. I noticed from a map there’s lots of cute little creeks and then they have some with some kind of embankment to keep the water back a little bit through the summer months I suppose we do the same thing here in Strawberry Arizona anyways, thank you for all your wonderful videos, sorry for the long text

What is that amazing song in the beginning? I'd love to know. It's sounds familiar, but I can't place it. I went through Ft. Davis once on my way to El Paso, but never really explored the city. Would love to go out there again. Thank you for all your amazing videos. They make my day, and they give me so much peace after listening to politics during the day.
My cousin lived on top of that little mountain for two years. At a Girl Scout ranch or something.

As mentioned below, don't forget the McDonald Observatory and take in a star show where they set up several telescopes for guests. (if that's going on post covid) The Indian Lodge Hotel has got to be one of the best kept secrets of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. If you want the very best cowboy hats check out Limpia Creek Hats in town, this is the real deal, not cheap ... but beautiful. (And I'm not affiliated with them) Ft Davis has (had?) a film on the Buffalo soldiers narrated by non other than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Interesting area, along with visting Big Bend National Park one of the more interesting trips I've taken.
Hey man, what days were you in Ft Davis? We were there the week after 4th of July. Love that area. We actually didn't go to the Fort, as we have been there a couple times. It's such a cool little town. Like a tiny resort town. The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute was an awesome highlight. We loved the cactus and pollinator gardens. We saw the same herd of Aoudad.
Wow, we probably narrowly missed each other. I was there the same week. Yeah I really like the atmosphere out there.

I asked myself the same thing! I had to rewind that part a few times. Can't tell if it's a ghost or an actual person. The way they're walking looks pretty spooky! Plus old forts/military posts are known to be haunted! I enjoy watching these videos. I love the Secrets of Texas guy! His voice and the way he moves around with his camera from place to place. I will soon be exploring a lot of these places myself! Love it! Keep up the good work!

How does Fort Davis compare to Alpine in terms of the town itself and the surrounding landscape?

New owner of Drugstore quit serving food! Only hotel guests can play pool. Turned Drugstore into a lounge for his guests.🤷♂️
Shame to see those fort houses with adobe walls and no roof - the 17 inch av. rainfall will destroy them

If you're asking about the Hotel Limpia, it was $113/night during the week the last I checked.
Awesome vid, however the Native Indians didn't pray on travelers lol!! They defended there land from invaders. I guess there is more than one point of view. Thanks for this vid.

The slanted rays of a rising Sun to start your day hit dew drops as you imagine the scenes of a time gone by. A circling hawk over an ageless land with cry’s that that puncture the silence. You need to be comfortable in your own skin to enjoy the peace & serenity. No distractions are needed
@@MrsRyan247 interesting that you should bring up that Texas history jewel. Cynthia Ann Parker is in my family’s ancestry. She was taken after her family was killed. She completely assimilated into the tribe and barely spoke English after a while. Texas Rangers found her & brought her back but she felt she was kidnapped … not rescued.
Love your video. Although there are great shots of the fort and the placard of Lt Henry O Flipper, I would like to mention that after the end of the Civil War, the fort became the Regimental Headquarters of the Buffalo Soldier regiments. For almost 20 years they protected the area against Indian raids, and most importantly, constructed nearly 100 miles of telegraph lines. The history of this area of Texas is compelling and well worth an in-depth read. There are several good books on the subject. Thanks for the beautiful video.
The First Presbyterian Church features prominently in the 1998 movie "Dancer Texas, Pop 81". It's a fun coming-of-age story that has some really outstanding cinematography of the area in and around Fort Davis. Well worth a look.

Love Fort Davis. Stayed at the Prude Guest Ranch several times. 4th of July parade and fireworks, so much fun. Balmorea Spring is a fantastic place to swim.

If you’re not far from it and you ever get the chance, you owe it to yourself to visit. It’s situated in such a beautiful area. As a West Texan, it’s my favorite little getaway.

my dad used to ride horse and was part of a reenactment troop of frontier soldiers at ft Davis. parents used to take us to the garrison in the 80s

I went to the Boy Scout ranch in the late fifties. Not many swimming holes out there, but I still know a couple,lol.

I passed by that area multiple times on my way to west Texas but haven't visited. The next time I go through Brackettville I'll probably check it out.
@@secretsoftexas6872 Brackettville the town I could not think of it. I went to Fort Clarke after Alamo Village. I understand Alamo Village is closed now. There was a Calvary Outpost I want to say near Kerrville that was testing the use of camels as military pack mules I believe all that is left is a nice restaurant and store. The store had the post office in it
