My favorite town in Texas. Lived there awhile and loved every minute.
The court house allows people to climb the steps to the top of the tower. From the tower you can get a great view of The Whole
town and surrounding area.
Thank you so much for including the World Soaring Championships display. You brought tears to my eyes remembering my Father. My Father wanted to be a pilot. Before he could earn enough to take lessons he came down with Parkinson's Disease so he could no longer achieve his dream. He was only in his early thirties. So in order to be a part of Aviation in some form he became a Chief Timer/ Line Chief at Texas Soaring Association and many competitions. I did not attend that Championship with him but years later on our way to Hobbs New Mexico he told me about attending that Championship and the Marfa Lights which he was able to see. Again thanks for bringing back memories.
The Marfa Lights are probably the most authentic and unexplainable phenomena in the world. No, they aren't car headlights. While it is true that you can see some lights that can be attributed to cars, the Marfa Lights are clearly distinct, and their mystery hasn't been solved to this day.
You are absolutely correct. My wife and I have seen them several times. Some nights are much better than others. Very puzzling phenomenon indeed!

100% not car lights, agreed. you can see the lights from the hwy in the background and they are totally separate from whatever the lights are. i dont know how you explain the movement those lights made it was truly bizarre. and so distant there was no way we could get any of it on camera.

We lived just outside of Marfa when I was the maintenance manager for a local ranch. If you’re ever in town make sure you attend church services on Sunday in Valentine just up Hwy 90 at Valentine Community Church.
Also some cool little known history surrounding the Barrel Springs Ranch that was once a stop for the stage couch and even had an army detachment that guarded the water hole just across the Hwy from the Barrel Springs present day property.
Been there. No lights. Nevertheless, great little town. But it is something about that big sky and openness that makes it so intriguing. Great video. Brings back memories.

We have visited Marfa and stayed at the Hotel Paisano a few times. The food is good there and the room we stayed in last time had the most comfortable bed/mattress I have ever slept on. Conversely, down the road in Alpine we once stayed in a motel which had the most uncomfortable mattresses in Texas. They were lopsided and literally felt like they were stuffed with straw. The fascinating and mysterious Marfa lights (between Alpine and Marfa) are a must-see. Yes, car lights CAN be seen on distant Hwy. 67 but once you have seen the real Marfa lights, you will easily recognize the difference between the genuine and headlights. Probably the best ‘show’ occurred the first night we witnessed them over twenty years ago. The red, blue, white and amber lights danced, expanded, split into two and split into three and back to one. They streaked horizontally above the ground and then shot up into the air like bottle rockets. Through binoculars they look like plasma. They also have an unsettling live quality. Dancing spirits? They are certainly an enigma. The nice viewing pavilion (with bathrooms) is a welcome addition and you can meet interesting and usually friendly visitors there from across the USA and the globe. We met some young travelers from Sweden on a recent visit. If you have the time, make the drive down 67 from Marfa to the border city of Presidio. The Chinati mountains and hot springs are worth the drive.

When growing up in ojinaga mexico across presidio texas the 1960s we would glance across n e and we would see lights like that 2 years ago my friend and I went to the hill and we could still see them at night! good memories!🥺
Great video. Last time I traveled to Marfa the Chinati Foundation was closed due to the pandemic. Really hoping to check it out one day. I recommend trying the Chinati Hot Springs just south of Marfa. It’s a beautiful scenic drive. You definitely need a truck or other high clearance vehicle nut great place to disconnect and enjoy the beauty of the Chinati Mountains.

Pretty sure any time "Marfa" is mentioned my first thought will always be Giant. There is also a very good PBS doc called Children of Giant that I highly recommend for the history oriented types. Meanwhile, I did enjoy your little tour.

I worked fairly close to Marfa in the early 80s. Funny to think I could have bought something there for a song back then. Marfa has turned into a pretty cool place.

A pretty place. Nestled in the highest range of western Texas.
The museum was my best friend’s Grandmothers home. They had a ranch out towards Presidio that borders the Resort Ranch( The one Justice Scalia died at) I spent a few nights in that house when I was younger. We go to the ranch to quail hunt and stay with his grandmother. When she passed they sold it or donated for the museum, not sure.
Its quite an artsy mecca for artists
I wish people would stop buying up all of the properties in our town. Now it has become a AirBnB grave yard with no real residents and a place we cannot afford, destroying the people takes away the soul of the town.
but @SmokinZen, not just Texas has that happening. These towns are dying without jobs for the young. Sometimes out of staters come and do GREAT THINGS that the natives should have done.
@@MTknitter22 What great things were the natives lacking. What great jobs are you talking about or how do they benefit from the outsiders. They didn’t need saving or outsiders they were fine just being who they have always been.

Sad that so many small towns are basically being abandoned by the residents either by just needing to find good paying jobs or just dying .
It has nothing to do about not finding jobs, there are plenty of jobs, it’s just that people from outside of Marfa who don’t even live there buy up all of the properties for a mass amount of money to turn into short term rentals and make money off of all of the tourists and so there is no more housing or affordable housing for essential workers, locals and their families so they have to leave. That’s why when tourists pile in here and then go out to eat and complain that there is no service because there’s not enough work force in Marfa, being a tourists they have no idea they’re the problem by renting and supporting these wealthy short term rental owners who push the local workers and residents out.

Basically there is just some old, decaying beams and lumber on the historic Ryan Ranch. However, the recently set up display on Hwy 90 going toward Marfa from Valentine has become quite a point of interest.

I went to school there. It was the worst. Alot of bullies and discrimination. The teachers hit the kids with wooden cutting boards. The only think I liked about marfa was my grand Mas house on oak st. To this day its haunted by my cousin David.
Not much to do there except get drunk ditch trains and get pregnant. Then again it's not the 1980s.
What is the best month to visit? Are there any safety concerns right now, due to the wide open southern border?
I can't speak for the current conditions out there, but my experience has been that the biggest problem areas are from Del Rio to Brownsville and El Paso. I went to the border for a week last year at a time when everyone was hyping it up and it was extremely quiet for me. I was in Brownsville, San Ygnacio, Rio Grande City, Laredo, and Eagle Pass. However, I imagine you probably need to spend much more time down there to get a good read on the overall conditions.
Is Marfa a place you can live without being too far out from a metroplex? I am thinking of leaving Dallas. My property taxes and cost of living are just too high here. I have always wanted to live in the desert somewhere in West Texas. Just seems so far away and the move would be hard to organize.

How do property taxes work in Texas? They are sky high and as your house gets reassessed you'll have to pay more each year regardless of your income. I have no clue why so many people are ok with that.
@@luperamos7307 The property tax system is very basic. There is a rate for your county, hospital, community college, school district etc. The rates vary. The highest rate is the school district. The lion share of our property taxes in Dallas, as I imagine most cities in Texas, come from school districts. The rate is multiplied by your appraised value as appraised by the appraisal district. That is basically what you pay in taxes. The problem is the system, advertently or inadvertently, assumes the higher your home is appraised in value that you must have more income. That's the flaw with the system. Homeowners who have lived in their homes for decades have no doubt seen great appreciation in their home values. That doesn't mean homeowners suddenly are flush with cash in their bank accounts. Essentially homeowners are being taxed on unrealized cash value. We do not have access to the cash values of our homes until we sell them. Most of us just want to stay in our homes. Let's use an analogy. Imagine owning stocks in your 401K and those stocks go up in value. You haven't sold the stocks. You're still holding them. Imagine if you were taxed on the value of your stock portfolio every year. You don't have access to the actual cash value of your stocks but you are taxed on the value anyway. Well that would sound crazy. But that is exactly what is happening with home owners. We are being taxed on unrealized gains every year. It's extortion and is forcing many of us to consider selling and moving.
@@tritosac I agree with everything you said. I was extremely surprised when I found out how high property taxes are in Texas. For homes in some new developments they can often charge you 2.8%! A rate close to 2% is seen as low. Ultimately the state needs income and Texas does not have a state income tax that would be more fair in my opinion. Bc a state income tax is barely noticed by the poor and will only make a massive difference if you have a really high income. I was also surprised how many roads you have to pay for in Texas. Many are even owned by foreign companies that can make a massive profit. I thought of living there many times, but the property taxes are the main reason why I always shied away from it.
@@luperamos7307 Well I don't agree on a state income tax. Let me use a couple of examples. Nevada and Florida both have effective property tax rates at 1% or less compared to Texas effective property tax hovering close to 2%. In some cities like Dallas, San Antonio and Austin it's closer to 2.5% Neither of those states have a state income tax. Now you may argue tourism is a big money maker for Florida and Nevada which bring a lot of income. However Texas actually brings in more tourism dollars than either Florida or Nevada. There is a better way to do it and if Texas really wanted to be competitive with Florida and Nevada our property taxes would be eliminated. Texas brings in over $150 billion in from tourist dollars compared to $112 billion for Florida and around $67 billion for Nevada. At the very least our average effective property tax rate should be less than 1%. A state income tax is not the answer. The counties, cities and more importantly the leaders in our state capitol need to stop using no state income tax as an excuse to extort us home owners out of our homes that we own free and clear.
My family had a ranch in Presidio county. My father use to mention Rick Thompson. He thought he was framed. Pretty crazy story if you read about it.

Sooo... Marfa is know for it's galleries and artists and you finish your vid with a tour of the local museum ONLY. No food; do they eat in Marfa? If not open ... what day of the week is it best to visit Marfa?

I am so disappointed you down-played the Marfa Lights. Why did you not stay and observe the mysterious lights yourself? I have been to Marfa three different times (years apart each visit) and have seen the unexplained lights clearly each time. Scientists have not been able to explain the lights. I say that a one time visit to see the lights for yourself will make you a a lifelong fan and a longing to return to Marfa anytime you are near.
