  • 35018 British India Line was one of the first batch of twenty Southern Railway ‘Merchant Navy’ Class steam locomotives to be built by the Southern Railway in 1945. British India Line was first allocated to Nine Elms shed, where it was to remain for most of its career, under both the Southern Railway and British Railways.
British India Line was withdrawn from service in August 1964 and sold on to Woodham Brothers Scrapyard in Barry, South Wales. It was rescued from the scrapyard in November 1979, but work to restore the locomotive to mainline running didn’t begin until 2012. British India Line first ran again under its own steam on the main line in May 2017. The locomotive is currently out-shopped in BR Brunswick Green with the late BR crest.
On a rather blustery Saturday morning in mid-July, 35018 is seen pulling out of Stevenage with the “White Rose” charter to York. Regretfully the glorious sound as she built up speed was lost due to the wind noise, but the camera still picked up an exchange of horn and whistles as an LNER 800 passed through on the fast line.

Been there once or twice before... but yeah, fancied a change. Didn't wait around for the second charter as the weather didn't look too great
