So happy to see a great paint job without 30 different shades for highlights
Thank you. Really glad you enjoyed the video. I try and keep things simple and easy to follow 👍🏻
I think this is one of the best looking Horus color schemes. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for watching
Great to hear you enjoyed it 👍
This paint job is incredible. That contrast paint wash is by far the easiest way to make sons of Horus green pop a bit more.
Awesome job! Big fan of the paint job on these.
Fantastic tutorial with superb explanations ! Thank you. Looking forward to more Horus Heresy content!
Thank you very much for checking out my channel. Really glad you enjoyed the video. Stay tuned for more 👍🏻
Great job chap looks amazing love the weathering

Wow! Looks awsome! And it was a really smooth and easy to follow tutorial, just earned a sub!

Really appreciate your support 👍🏻
Thank you for actually showing how to paint the MKVI that comes in the box. Excited to watch the rest of your videos.
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the video.

superb painting. love how clan and crips it turned out.
Thank you very much 🙂
Lovely finish on that man. Super clean.
Thank you sir
Looks great!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Wow.... absolutely amazing
Thank you 🙏🏻
GW have a newer runelord brass, exactly the same colour but it covers much better and doesn’t split. Definitely worth it.
Nice one. Thanks for the heads up
I’ll be sure to pick some up then. As I love the colour but the old paint is annoying
Amazing work!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching
Awesome job and a fantastic guide. Hopefully my sons turn out even half as good as this I’d be over the moon
Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed the video, please let me know how you get on 👍🏻
That is the cleanest green base coat I've ever seen!
Thanks very much 🤛🏻
great tutorial mate ! love that blueish tint - if I would paint them ( don`t like 30k aesthetics) Your guide is best by far ! keep up an amazing work
Thanks for checking it out, really glad you enjoyed it
great vid ! will be using this guide to do mine :)
Awesome, thanks man
Please let me know how you get on 👍🏻
Lovely painting! We’ll done ☺️
Thank you 🙏🏻
Absolutely love your vids and would love to see your take on HH Death Guard
Thanks man
HH Death Guard? Hmm 🤔 not even sure how they look. Will give ‘em a look 👍🏻
I have not thought about painting 30k nor playing it, but this guy looks so badass! The finish is so smooth and the highlights are done so well. It almost looks like it came out of that Horus Heresy trailer with the amount of detail and cleanliness. Amazing work!
Thank you.
I’m so pleased you enjoyed the video even without any interest in the game the minis from 😀 to me that’s the highest praise I could hope for
Really appreciate you checking out my channel.
Out of interest, what game system do you play? Perhaps I have a video coming up on that soon too 😉
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Personally, I play and paint 40k. That's kinda why I watch the 30k stuff, because a lot of what is said can be applied to 40k minis. It's not to say I wouldn't try some of the Heresy stuff, just that I think 40k is a bit more bonkers and I think its funny.
Also I would love to see you do Carcharodons with some of the Heresy minis. Just a thought. 👍
Amazing! I really like the helmet details
Thank you.
The helmet is from the new ForgeWorld upgrade pack for Sons of Horus.
I really liked the Darth Maul sort of vibe they have
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Yeah the spikes really bring it together
Wow so clean and beautiful! I can't wait for you to do one of Deathwatch or Legion of the Damned.
Thank you for checking out my channel, really glad you enjoyed the video.
Deathwatch and Legion of the Damned are awesome suggestions. 👍🏻
HH Blood Angles Please - Love the flexible armor method of Eshin Gray, and Nuln Oil. Really like the use.
First, really dig your tutorials, especially this one! Don‘t know how often i watched it in the last couple of months and it gave me the guts to try these scheme on my first miniatures after a very long break and my first Space Marines ever - started with Lotr as a teenager.
So one question i have with the shading. Do you wash all of the armor with the 5:1 mix or just the recesses?
Keep up the great work, yours are one of the best, most relaxing and easiest to follow tutorials on youtube 🤝🏻
Thank you 🙏🏻
So great to hear my video has encouraged you to paint again.
When shading the armour, yes you apply the thinned contrast paint all over all the armour.
You should find though, because it is so thin that it doesn’t want to stay on the flat areas and instead just wants to collect in the grooves and recesses. That’s perfect, encourage it to do that.
If it’s not going for stay on the other areas, what’s the point of painting them with it you ask?
The answer is two reasons, firstly it’s just quicker and easier to apply all over and it will prevent it drying with ugly tide marks.
Secondly, even though it may not seem like it, the other areas will still get tinted and you will get some lovely subtle gradients on those panels for very little effort. Bonus! 👍🏻
Hope that helps
Keep up with the painting and let me know how you get on
Nice mate. Can't wait if you do Space Wolves
Thank you 🤛🏻
Looking forward to the imperial fists follow-up
Very nice❤️
Thank you 🤛🏻
This is great. I’m going to use some of the techniques to make some T’au. I imagine that green working really well on Fire Warriors.
Thank you.
The green would work great on T’au for sure. Please let me know how you get on 👍🏻
I will when I get around to it :P
Life is hard.
Giving it a try now. Was delayed by life.
More HH please, especially Abaddon and some Death Guard 😊
Would love to see some Thousand Sons Heresy content.
Will see what I can do
great lesson! I vote fore DarkAngels for the next Legion!
Thanks so much for
watching
I’ve done a 40k dark angels video, which I know is completely different, but I think I might not do a 30K one straightaway
Another great video! Enjoyed this one even more than the ravenguard tutorial, what are your thoughts on laying down the sons of Horus green with an airbrush? Also that pigment looks amazing, what colors where used on the base itself because they match perfectly. Thanks again for the great tutorial!
Thanks man
If you’ve got an airbrush then hell yeah use it for the SoH Green. Will make your life a lot easier when batch painting
As for the basing colours, I’ll make a vid for the process, as I’ve a lot to make up anyway 👍🏻
Awesome thank you! This armor and black might be the nail in the coffin for me to start buying some marines. 😂
I find listening to your voice to be very therapeutic. I love how you explain everything very thoroughly while still managing to be concise.
Thanks man, much appreciated 👍
Awesome! Will definitely try it out. I hope you are doing a Word Bearers tutorial as well :)
Thanks, please let me know how you get on if you do try it. 👍🏻
Thanks, please let me know how you get on if you do try it. 👍🏻
He is clean! I need to check out Dark Star's paints. Those are some nice metallic colours. Glazing with metallics is also really cool.
Thank you.
Definitely check out Darkstar’s metallics, they are gorgeous.
So, how did this recipe compare to your own?
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides A bit brighter than mine. I went with Lupercal Green as my armour colour. I'm rapidly warming up to Sons of Horus Green however. Lupercal looks a little too much like Dark Angels. Overall, I picked up some cool ideas here.
@@mirage809 I know what you mean about getting that balance with the green. This was a good excuse for me to try out Sons of Horus Green, and I have to say it’s a really nice colour.
Really glad the video gave you some ideas and was of use 👍🏻
This is a great tutorial. How would this transfer on larger models such as dreadnoughts? Should you know
Fantastic job and tutorial! I was struggling with my own SOH. I think my Terradon Turquoise is still to heavy at 5:1. Ali’s what color did you use for the contrasting orange look of the eye lenses and lower leg tubes please? Super work!!!
Thank you
If 5:1 is too strong it could be because you’re applying it a bit too thickly on the flatter areas. Try knocking it down to 6:1 and see if that helps reduce the strength on those areas. It’s all about finding a process that works for you.
For the little red hose it was mephiston red and then the agrax wash.
The eye lenses are Mephiston red with a glaze of wild rider red in the middle
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Thanks much! I may indeed be using too thick an application. I was using a thicker wash brush. I will also try a test model with a smaller round brush
@@rhettscott3124 nice one
Let me know how you get on
Absolutely amazing! What varnish did you use?
Thank you
I use Testors Dullcote
But that’s getting harder and harder to get, so I’m on the hunt for a more available alternative
Could u PLS do a carcharodons tutorial?
nice.
Thanks 🤛🏻
eres un maestro
Thank you very much
This is a great tutorial! I'm not sure if this is explained but what Artis Opus brush did you use for the edge highlights?
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed the video.
For the edge highlights I used a 00 series S brush. 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thank you so much
Would you ever consider painting a 40k emperors children model? I love your style and have been searching for the right approach for ages
Thank you, much appreciated
Yeah, I do quite like the idea of doing some multi-coloured schemes and Emperors Children is one I've been looking at as it happens.
Wont be immediate, but it is on the list for sure. Just need more time in the day :(
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thanks for the response! In any case keep doing what you’re doing, I’m learning a lot with every video so thank you 🙏
Dunno why but I picture you as Samwell Tarley maester of paint, sitting there in his robes showing us all how to paint like a pro...😂 Think it's your accent, particularly when you say games workshop 🤔🤷🏻♂️
Great vids and paintwork btw 👍
This may be a bit late, but can I proxy the Citadel Paints with the ArmyPainter set?
Not sure the video picked it up… does Priming it with black and then again with the white at an angle make a difference once it’s covered in the SoH base coat?
No, the zenithal priming doesn’t make a massive difference to the end result, as the SoH base coat is applied as a solid colour. I zenithal prime for the video just so the model doesn’t look like a featureless blob on camera for the first few stages.
Zenithal priming does help you see details you may miss if you prime a single colour though, so it can be useful for that purpose though. 👍🏻
tried to follow this tutorial but the contrast paint left a lot of streaking - would you thin it down more?
Dayem thats a very nice model, better than my guys 😂
Thanks man
Slt, super tuto, pourriez-vous faire un tuto sur un Space Wolf, SVP ...
Thank you, really glad you enjoyed it.
30K Space Wolves is on the list for sure
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides Cool, Thank's ...
I didn't get that head style in my kit where did u get thst one ? Age of darkness astartes have the beak style helmets
The helmet is from the ForgeWorld Sons of Horus upgrade pack
It was released at the same time as the Age of Darkness boxset
www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/horus-heresy-sons-of-horus-mk6-heads-2022
What would be a good Citadel color equivalents to SC75 Graphite & Darkstar Graphite?
Citadel don’t do exact matches for those colours, especially in terms of their matte / metallic properties.
I guess, just on tone alone, the closest matches would be Dawnstone and Ironbreaker.
Hope that helps
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thanks mate 👌🏻
How do I ensure I don’t leave any brush stokes when doing the wash on the flat armour panels? Mine look very streaky and not as neat as yours!
So, the large amount of contrast medium should help make the contrast wash less prone to settling on the flat panels, but there’s still a couple of things you can do to help it go on smooth and neatly.
The main thing is to not over work it. That means, not disturbing it once it has begun to dry.
So, you need to work fast and try not to touch an area more than once.
I work a panel at a time. Apply the wash in the middle and work it out to the edges. That way any excess will end up away from the centre.
Sometimes there’s a temptation to “just add a bit more” to a panel because it doesn’t look dark enough. But resist. Let it completely dry first.
You can always apply another layer later if it needs to be darkened.
Using a large brush can help too, as it will allow you to coat a panel quicker and avoid over working it.
Finally, and this is cliche but it’s true, practice. The more you do, the more of a feel for it you’ll develop.
Never forget though, if needs be, you can always repaint the odd panel with the Sons of Horus green and try again 👍🏻
Hope that helps
Thanks for watching my videos 👍🏻
Is Scale75's Flat Black just called Black now? All I can find for SC00 is Black.
Yes! It is.
Sorry, I need to update the description for this video.
SC00 - black is the paint you want
Thanks for watching 👍
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thanks for the speedy reply!
Do you have plans for space wolves ?
For 30k or 40k?
Before I had a RUclips channel I did a picture guide to 40K Space Wolves, which may help in the short term?
instagram.com/p/BuLnel6nZPL/?igshid=MDJmNzVkMjY=
Longer term, yes, I very much plan to do a Space Wolves video 🐺
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides for 30k I meant
@@masterballuk6780 no worries 👍🏻
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides thats a very cool guide but I'm coming from mesbg to hh so I'm learning still
Using your video for my sons of horus, however my soh green is far darker than yours, it reminds me more of dark angel green, has anyone else found this?
that sounds very dark.
What colour primer are you painting it over?
Even though in this video I paint the SOH green to a solid colour it will be lighter where it's painted over the pale grey primer.
please please please do a tutorial for alpha legion
Good call
I love Alpha Legion
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides would be awesome to see, i could see me doing an. alpha legion force using the sons of horus upgrade head kits - think those helmets are quite cool
Where did u get that head style

Do a deathguard paint sceme or a dusk raiders paint sceme :D HEresy 4 the win, even tho0 printer goes BRRRR
Ooo! Deathguard could be a great video, good call
Thanks for checking out my channel 👍🏻
I despise painting things twice. As General Patron said " I don't like paying for territory twice" This will always be my biggest gripe about acrylics. With enamels I paint them one and that is it. I come from the car modeling hobby where painting things twice makes Zero sense. Still does.
No problem. Paint your miniatures with enamels then 👍
@@BrushstrokePaintingGuides I have taken to it somewhat. The colors that are the most problem I have replaced with enamels
There are a great many acrylic colors that can be done in one layer, but there are some that are really a pain.
@@NitroModelsAndComics that’s true, your whites, yellows and reds will always have coverage issues in acrylics, due to their size of pigment molecules. Enamels get away with it due to their chemical composition not suspending their pigments in water based solutions.
As you’ve said, it’s about finding the best solution for you 👍
ive followed this guide two times and both time my model comes out a lot darker than yours. I'm thinning the contrast but still not the result like yous
For this scheme you’re just looking to apply the contrast wash into the recess and panel grooves. The contrast shouldn’t darken the main armour panels much at all from the Sons of Horus green basecoat.
If the contrast does go on a bit too heavy, my solution would be to just apply a thin layer of Sons of Horus green over the panels which are too dark and brighten them back up again.
It really shouldn’t take much to lift the green back to the lighter shade again and you can actually leave some of the darker tone showing through nearer the recesses to enhance the shading, which will be a nice touch.
I can offer more specific advice if you send me some pics through on Insta 👍
