Hi Richard. I just wanted to say that you have been the most influential artist for me personally. Your use of stippling and weathering techniques have truly changed my personal style in a way that has made me excited about painting my own minis again. Keep it up man!
Just tried this method out on a model and it turned out fantastic, a fun not frustrating process as well which is the best part! Thank you for sharing!
Really looking forward to seeing your approach to painting yellow using these techniques as I don't have access to an airbrush and a few squads to get tabletop ready for the summer. Great work - cheers!
Just to say thanks so much for this video! I have started painting some Blood Angels with it, and absolutely love it - think it's one of the only schemes I have found that replicates the lovely deep, rich red they are sometimes presented as. As an observation, I've found the stripling gives an almost airbrush-like effect at the end. While the contrast wash gives an almost oils-like effect! So this is ideal for someone like me who is too lazy to either airbrush or use oils! So thanks so much, you have saved me a lot of time and effort!
My first time watching one of your videos, and I really enjoyed it. It makes me want to give it a go as it’s a style I would never try, but seems very accessible.
Found out about your channel yesterday and today I am going to try to emulate what I've learned here with you (a bunch of stuff, in just a matter of hours). You really are a master. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for sharing this technique. Excellent timing for the release of the upcoming HH boxset but also applicable to plenty of other models. I look forward to seeing more of your tutorials!
Hey Richard, I found this guide and absolutely love it. However I often struggle to translate an infantry scheme over to vehicles. Contemptors are fine but tanks and flyers are more challenging because of all the harsh angles. Would doing a guide for how to ‘scale-up’ a scheme be something you would consider doing?
I’ve not long tried this - you have to work really fast with the contrast or it dries quick!! I’m really not sure you’d have time to work with it even on a Contemptor
This is great, so much so that I’ve dug out the Betrayal at Calth Chaplain to attempt to imitate your technique. I’m away with work for a few days and want to start Blood Angels again, they were my second Ed army
Thanks so much for this Richard - BA were my first army back in the RT days and I'm excited about adding some to my HH force. Your style of stippling, washing and a battle worn look is exactly what I am after. Thanks indeed!
Superb! I was already planning to break out my Artis Opus series D set for the new Horus heresy boxset, so absolutely brilliant to see your approach here. Taking so much inspiration from this. Cheers!
Looks great, definetely going to use this approach when the box releases. Im wondering how it would look like with the forgeworld BA heads... just too many beaks in one box.
I wonder at which point did this video turned into witchcraft... Superb content, as always. Will we be seeing some more Legions' tutorial in a similar manner ? Sons of Horus would perhaps be a fitting choice ?
Awesome, had a go at this and it turned out really nice. Definitely not as good as this one, and took me a LOT longer than an hour like! But practice makes perfect I guess. Just need to have a go at the battle damage and he's done. Also just used Agrax instead of the contrast paint as I didn't have any of that one lying about. I'm sure I'll get better once the other 19 squadmates are done though..
Wonderful video with an amazing result. I don't use airbrushes and tend to avoid using oils and this is exactly the sort of channel and video I'd expect. I see lots of other content creators from the community using far too wide a variety of tools and paints to achieve their effects and not all of us have a wall of a thousand paints and all the tools needed to achieve the same degree of results that they do. This is a fantastic, grimdark, worn looking addition to any army and has SO much character compared to the rather flat looking standard GW tutorials and has won you a sub from me. I know this video is several weeks old now and I just recently watched your Imp-fists video using similar techniques. Would love to see the 'other side' of the box set. Any chance of a Sons of Horus video to follow up? I've been a life long loyalist- but dipped my toe into the heretic pool for this release and would love to create an army of the Sons with a similar aesthetic and level of quality. I think it would look amazing on a shelf or on any table. Not expecting a response of course, but letting you know what I personally would love to see! Top class videos and will be recommending to everyone in the hobby that I know!
Hi Richard! I was wondering if you could do a similar technique to paint up an imperial fist, the stippling looks great and I'm looking to collect them for my first 30k venture
Absolutely fantastic tutorial - need to take this out for a swirl. Never thought to use stippling before. Are you planning on running more tutorials given the build-up to the new edition, like the Sons of Horus?
I don't often sit through full painting videos but this was great. Love the final effect. Do you have any Blood Angels Vehicle tutorials.?? I'm just a bit cautious to use Contrast on large flat pannels. However I'd love to recreate this effect on say, a Predator or even larger like a Spartan.. Keep up the great work...
Really interesting approach! I must say I was worried there with the Darkoath Flesh :p Say, is there any chance for a Space Wolves Heresy tutorial similar as this? Cheers and fantastic work! Thank you!
Awesome guide! Your method is killer, Im about to start a BA army cuz of this video. Did you apply any varnish to the weather dust or was it able to remain straight out of the pot?
Fantastic 30k blood angels painting. I always wanted to paint in this method. I wonder how you can apply this technic to 30k imperial fist. how is it done for yellow color? thanks for the video!
Hi Richard, im hoping to use this on some Angels Sanguine, which are halved Black and Red, any suggestions on how to do a black to match this style? Would you Black Templar tutorial work do you think?
Really love your videos and particularly find your narration informative and interesting. Thank you! Were you to use an oil wash for Blood Angels, what colour would you suggest?
Hey Richard! I was looking for the necron Skorpekh Lord painting video on your website today and couldn't find it at all. Was it removed for some reason? I've subscribed to you there and I used to be able to find it and watch it.
Amazing Work Richard this is perfect timing. I’ve just got back into painting and had been planning a Blood angel army thanks heap for the tutorial and inspiration. Quick one where did u use the Vallejo mech gloss I don’t recall seeing you use it.
sweet guide. However how does this translate to larger Tanks? what works for infantry doesn't work for larger tanks. Contract over big panels is a hella a challenge to not look like trash
I recently stumbled upon your Night Lord praetor video and I'm already hooked. This is a gem as well! I've been practicing my drybrushing for my up coming White Scars army. I quite prefer this finish compared to the chalkiness I often end up with while drybrushing (even with a damp brush). Do you reckon this kind of stippling would work with lighter greys on a grey primer, finished off with oils for a "white" armour?
Beautiful - think I’ll give this a try but with purples for some Emperor’s Children. Hope you don’t mind me asking, if you were working with purples, what contrast colour would you use for the shade stage, still Darkoath?
"Quick Gaming Level Model" - paints superb mini.
Quality video mate, saw this on twitter and subbed in anticipation, not disappointed.
Thanks! Great to see an approach that doesn't rely on airbrush and oil washes!
Hi Richard. I just wanted to say that you have been the most influential artist for me personally. Your use of stippling and weathering techniques have truly changed my personal style in a way that has made me excited about painting my own minis again. Keep it up man!
I liked in advance because I know this will be awesome! 😁
Love it, looks awesome. I prefer this technique way more than the traditional way of painting.
Great video as always Richard🙃🤗
It's way quicker and the look fits the game I think.
I've been looking for Blood Angels tutorials overnight... it's like you knew. Thanks Richard 🙏
Just tried this method out on a model and it turned out fantastic, a fun not frustrating process as well which is the best part! Thank you for sharing!
Liked in advance. Your videos has made a huge impact on the way I paint!
This might be the scheme I’ve been waiting for! Thanks Richard, nice clear instructions as usual!
Damn you're good. Love your painting style, it's so crisp.
Your approach makes me want to buy these marines just to paint them! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Very cool technique with the stripping and the way you applied contrast. Thanks for another tool in the tool box
this is my fave blood angel on youtube, amazing work man. cant wait to try it.
Really looking forward to seeing your approach to painting yellow using these techniques as I don't have access to an airbrush and a few squads to get tabletop ready for the summer. Great work - cheers!
There's already a tutorial on this channel. Search for "Imperial Fists grimdark". :-)
Just to say thanks so much for this video! I have started painting some Blood Angels with it, and absolutely love it - think it's one of the only schemes I have found that replicates the lovely deep, rich red they are sometimes presented as.

You really are a master. Thanks a lot!
Citadel equivalents for the gun highlights could be corvus black and dark reaper, or mix mechanicus standard grey into the dark reaper.
Defiantly going to use this for my normal Blood Angels.
Can't wait to check out some Imperial Fist content, but this was fantastic! You've made me want to give it a go. Thank you for sharing!
Really loved the stippling style for the power armour. Going to be adapting the colours for my word bearers!
Thank you for sharing this technique. Excellent timing for the release of the upcoming HH boxset but also applicable to plenty of other models. I look forward to seeing more of your tutorials!
Great video Richard! Looking forward to seeing how you do your imperial fists
Really good question, and would also love to hear an answer!
Yup same here - the prospect of vehicles always confounds me
I’ve not long tried this - you have to work really fast with the contrast or it dries quick!! I’m really not sure you’d have time to work with it even on a Contemptor
Great video, I will sign up to patron soon.
After painting dominion for the last few months I am ready for some horus heresy. Keep up the good work.
Could we have a video on painting Heresy World Eaters
lovely! great idea with the dabbing paint
This is great, so much so that I’ve dug out the Betrayal at Calth Chaplain to attempt to imitate your technique. I’m away with work for a few days and want to start Blood Angels again, they were my second Ed army
Very nice.
The new Heresy stuff looks great, so exciting to hear more will come :)
Thanks so much for this Richard - BA were my first army back in the RT days and I'm excited about adding some to my HH force. Your style of stippling, washing and a battle worn look is exactly what I am after. Thanks indeed!
Always a pleasure to watch your process. Thank-you sir.
I also liked in advance lol because these videos are constantly feckin awesome. Great job Richard
Excellent technique! Really impressive work.
Could you PLEASE do one of these quick paint jobs for Sons of Horus? I would be eternally grateful!
Superb! I was already planning to break out my Artis Opus series D set for the new Horus heresy boxset, so absolutely brilliant to see your approach here. Taking so much inspiration from this. Cheers!
Excellent video, I hope you do more HH videos in the future 👍🏻
Wahoo, the one I've been waiting for, thanks Richard 👍😁👍
Excellent tutorial Richard, I'll echo what others have said and say I'd love some tips or a video on how to translate this over to a vehicle!
Neat tutorial. Never used contrast as a wash, usually argax earthshade gets that job. Lets see how you do Alpha Legion
Looks great, definetely going to use this approach when the box releases. Im wondering how it would look like with the forgeworld BA heads... just too many beaks in one box.
Thank you for another great video, Richard
Love it first time watching your video very cool effect doing the stippling dropped you a sub
great tutorial, as always! i would love to see your approach on a true metal armor. please, do one!
I wonder at which point did this video turned into witchcraft... Superb content, as always. Will we be seeing some more Legions' tutorial in a similar manner ? Sons of Horus would perhaps be a fitting choice ?
what a video. thankyou very much. amazing work
This is a great tutorial, love the finish and hopefully will be faster for when i get the Heresey box set👍☺️
Awesome, had a go at this and it turned out really nice. Definitely not as good as this one, and took me a LOT longer than an hour like! But practice makes perfect I guess. I'm sure I'll get better once the other 19 squadmates are done though..
This is probably the best Blood Angel scheme I've seen. If you were to use oils instead of the contrast wash what would you use?
Audio is a bit low had to turn the volume almost all the way up just to hear you other than that love your work and thank you for sharing it
Wonderful video with an amazing result. I don't use airbrushes and tend to avoid using oils and this is exactly the sort of channel and video I'd expect.

I will do more, I just need to get more beakies!
Fantastic! You are like the second coming of Christ in the painting community... Dark Angels next maybe? :D
That is beautiful
great video, thank you for sharing - question, if you where to use oils instead of the Darkoath Flesh (Contrast), - what would you use?
Really interesting approach! I must say I was worried there with the Darkoath Flesh :p Say, is there any chance for a Space Wolves Heresy tutorial similar as this? Cheers and fantastic work! Thank you!
I love German grey. Cheers.
Really excellent in style, please could you confirm what contrast paint you would use if doing an army in dark angels green for 40k? Thank you!
Gorgeous
Awesome guide! Your method is killer, Im about to start a BA army cuz of this video. Did you apply any varnish to the weather dust or was it able to remain straight out of the pot?
Fantastic work! Would this work on models with larger flat areas like a Spartan (particularly with the contrast paint)
Fantastic 30k blood angels painting. I always wanted to paint in this method. I wonder how you can apply this technic to 30k imperial fist. how is it done for yellow color? thanks for the video!
Looking forward to seeing this too.
Amazing as usual Richard ❤️ These new beakies are too cool! I might "have to" buy some despite the "gray horde" currently amassing on my shelf...
Hi Richard, im hoping to use this on some Angels Sanguine, which are halved Black and Red, any suggestions on how to do a black to match this style? Would you Black Templar tutorial work do you think?

It should still be there. I'll check
Are you using a paid subscription or free subscription? It's only available with paid subscription it seems.
Brilliant!
Amazing Work Richard this is perfect timing. I’ve just got back into painting and had been planning a Blood angel army thanks heap for the tutorial and inspiration. Quick one where did u use the Vallejo mech gloss I don’t recall seeing you use it.
How do you keep the paint from drying so fast on the brush? I always end up with dried paint specs on the bristles after a couple of brush strokes...
Move fast and keep washing it. It will also depend on your environment.
i hate how good you are
Are there any replacements for the weathering powder? I don't think FW do it any more.
Excellent video and result. Did you fix the pigment powder down at all, or is it still loose?
Nice work! Any tips on painting Necrons with true metallics?
what brushes do you use?
sweet guide. However how does this translate to larger Tanks? what works for infantry doesn't work for larger tanks. Contract over big panels is a hella a challenge to not look like trash
Looks awesome! If you’d paint it with greens Salamanders style which contrast instead of Darkoath would you use?
Totally awesome
presumably I can use an oil wash instead of contrast, that amount of it scares me :P
Superb!
I have a question: could I use something else other than Daroath Flesh Contrast, since I don't use Contrast paints? Would a shade wash do a trick?
Love the bit more simple tutorial
I recently stumbled upon your Night Lord praetor video and I'm already hooked. This is a gem as well! I've been practicing my drybrushing for my up coming White Scars army. I quite prefer this finish compared to the chalkiness I often end up with while drybrushing (even with a damp brush). Do you reckon this kind of stippling would work with lighter greys on a grey primer, finished off with oils for a "white" armour?
Awesome as always Rich, what brush are you using? I really struggle to find size 1-0 brushes that have sturdy bristles
Beautiful - think I’ll give this a try but with purples for some Emperor’s Children. Hope you don’t mind me asking, if you were working with purples, what contrast colour would you use for the shade stage, still Darkoath?
I’m now thinking Shyish Purple or a dark blue contrast for the shadows
This is great - if you were to use oil instead of contrast what rough colour would you aim to mix up?
I don’t understand why the matte varnish doesn’t seem to affect your red at all. It ruins every red I try and it drives me crazy
Lovely work Richard! I was wondering whether you'd be able to approach painting black armour using a similar technique?
A month before this one, Richard actually did paint a Black Templar: ruclips.net/video/1rgAhJuJ4ro/видео.html
Good tutorial, too!
That colors would you use to do this with an Emperor's children marine?
Superb 👌
Very nice.
can I use streaking grime instead of dark oath flesh?
darkoath? would agrax or seraphim not work?
As someone who doesn't really have space for an airbrush setup, this looks incredible! I have to try it! Does it work for vehicles as well?
Vallejo German Grey and Neutral Grey for bolt gun higlights. Not on paint list. 👍
Forge world weathering dark sand doesn't seem to exist anymore. Anyone know of a replacement?
How would you go about doing this with an airbrush please?
For your gaming pieces, do you fix the pigment powder in place with anything?
No, I only pick up by the rim of the bases. You can give the powder a quick coat of matt varnish or mineral spirits.
@@demonrich Thanks.
