Great show and tell on catching those elusive suckers! I just learned how to catch them in January, but it was on the multi-jig rigs. I like your method with the Foley spoon. Great job.!
I dont even fish but I enjoyed watching your video and I appreciated your interaction with the other fishermen 💚 this is good knowledge and survival skills
interesting video also like the way you shared the Foley bait with your fellow Angler.thats one of the great things of our sport.anglers can approach each other and generally want to help each other be successful
I have caught them 2 and 3 at a time with three 2" blue and silver crappie jigs tied on. Last time I was there I caught over 30 fish at that same spot!!!
Awesome Joe, no skipjack out here in southeastern Virginia..The only Herring type fish we are allowed to keep are gizzard shad..Have to net those..Big fine if you have any other type of herring in your boat...
I always meet the friendliest people while fishing the bank or in the parking lot. This afternoon was no exception. Yesterday I got good info from a Department of Water Resources employee who was planting steelhead in The Feather River near Yuba City.
Skipjack if stored in the freezer for longer than 6 months are best frozen immediately. ice and salt bath will freeze the oils before they leech out. just a tip.
joe been catching skip like crazy up here at old hickory I know I have commented on a few of youre videos should come up here and do a few videos I like all of your videos tight lines
waiting until tomorrow to go to the Dam near me with my buddy. well about 45 minutes away in wv.. my buddy got a pontoon boat and turns it into a catfishin boat.. he has a freezer full of skips. we cal them and shad catfish crack lol.. all I fish for is cats and bluegill (to eat and for bait) I've never got to go with my buddy when the skips run Herr because of health issues but always get to use thrm as bait and reap the benefits haha. anyway this makes the probably 20th video I've watched of yours back to back tonight, I dig how you're a true fisherman, you fight the fish and wear them out instead of using big ol overpowering baitcaster with some 50# plus braid or something. I really enjoyed the video of you catch in that 53ish lb blue with 10# line.. that was awesome and would of been a memorable fight! I fish the Ohio river.. mostly from the banks, unless I get invited to go boat fishin from a few friends with boats. anyway I really enjoy your videos, your hospitality and your enthusiasm for the sport. one fish in videos I ever watch an sub to I ol Luke from cats and carps but just subbed to you sir! keep up the awesome videos! an keep them lines right brotha man!!
Just wondering. I see and hear so many in videos talking about whatever line they had on their reels then saying they were using leaders of equal or even heavier test. Case in point this video where you speak of 10lb on the reel and a 20lb leader. I was taught the purpose behind using a leader at all was to limit how much line and or equipment might be lost if or when the line snapped for whatever reason (usually as the result of a snag). Better to lose a hook and maybe a few inches of leader material. Keeping some spare leaders made up so you could just snap the fresh leader on and go back to fishing. As opposed to losing who knows how many feet or even yards off your reel. Plus the hook or lure, plus a snap or barrel swivel, plus any weights you may have placed on the line.
Which is my point. That same area that is prone to high abrasion is equally prone to snagging. How many times have you cast out. Then when you went to reel back in found you had hooked a tangled up wad of fishing line someone had left behind? How many yards of line have you lost in a single day of fishing? Because you kept getting snagged and ended up breaking your line. It's not like you can just wade out there and pick it up. It's not that often you know for sure where it's even at when it broke.
What's the ideal outside temperature to catch skipjack. I know in the winter people catch them near the steam plants but what about catching them in the spring and summer.
You can catch skipjack anytime really...it mostly depends on water temperature. I've caught them all year round. Best time to catch them is when water temps are in the 70's. That's based on my own experience.
where we fish we dont really have skipjack's there a bit south of where we fish. Seeing as there aren't any skipjacks in our area I would assume mooneye would work
Ziploc vacuum bags are kinda hard to find these days. I'm finding this out myself. But you can get them on Amazon. You can get the foley spoons here: bottomdwellerstackle.com/product/foley-spoons/
joe y they are super oily....so oily that when you get done handling a few of them your hands feel like they have lotion on them....the oils get in the water and are a good attractant for big cats...
They can stay fresh for a good while. I typically spend a few days every year filling my freezer with skipjack. I vacuum seal them to keep them fresh as possible.
Chatt Cats Fishing ok thanks, I love watching your videos. I don't live to far from Chattanooga. I have never fished up at Chicamaga dam. I would love to come fishing with you sometime.
hey man I'm 16 and every time I tried live bait or catching them and letting them die I always feel awful about it.how do I change my mind set about it

I've been there before! I caught a nice smallmouth bass on a rattle trap. I like catching skippies over here on Old Hickory as well.
That dam has it all! I've seen huge bluegill caught there that had to of easily topped 2 pounds.
That’s why I love fishing just seeing people being so nice to each other gives me a good vibe
It's good to share knowledge. Thanks for watching.

I'm using a heavier leader line in this video because I'm fishing in the rocks. The heavier leader just provides more abrasion resistance.
Which is my point. That same area that is prone to high abrasion is equally prone to snagging.

What's the ideal outside temperature to catch skipjack. I know in the winter people catch them near the steam plants but what about catching them in the spring and summer.

nice video buddy
Thank you!
Catching bait can be fun to.
It never gets old.
I like you.You are a good person. 👋
Thanks for watching!
wow you're a nice guy 👍
So what type of spoon are you using? Do you think a johnson silver minnow in 1/8 oz will work fine.
Foley spoon.
It's worth a try. Give it a whirl and see what happens. Tight lines!
You are the best
Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
Can you catch them there this time of year? I’m thinking about going tomorrow…
Yes. Good luck.
do you think I could start catching mooneye's yet? in wisconsin btw
where we fish we dont really have skipjack's there a bit south of where we fish. Seeing as there aren't any skipjacks in our area I would assume mooneye would work
Mooneye will work. I don't think we have mooneye in my neck of the woods but they are an awesome bait for sure.
Thanks, I only started cat fishing recently and remembered the Mooneye that I would throw back as a trash fish. Now I have a use :D
give me name of place, city n state, I'd like to give it a shot there, looks like fun
This was below Chickamauga Dam in Chattanooga, TN. Thanks for watching.
What kind of a spoon is that you're using for the skipjack?
Never mind. You said what it was. Where you get yours? Also I didn't catch what size you where using
Size I use is 1-3/8" I get mine here: bottomdwellerstackle.com/product/foley-spoons/
I just checked them out. They have a bunch of colors and nice prices to boot
I have two questions where can I get the Foley spoons at and where do I get the Ziploc vacuum bags
Ziploc vacuum bags are kinda hard to find these days. I'm finding this out myself. But you can get them on Amazon. You can get the foley spoons here: bottomdwellerstackle.com/product/foley-spoons/
He just let the fish suffocate rather than slapping it to finish the job. What.
So where to nuy a foley spoon. Amazon doesn't seem to have them.
You can get them here: bottomdwellerstackle.com/product-brands/foley-spoons/
Do you use the sumo spoons from sumo in chatt?
No, but they are a GREAT company.
Yo. What size folly spoon you got on there???
1-3/8"
I use the 1 5/8
live to shad fish I live in va thay are thick in the Rappahannock river
What is the name of that lure you are using and where can I find them
Foley spoon
so what makes skips the best for cats, is it their scent or oils or what
joe y they are super oily....so oily that when you get done handling a few of them your hands feel like they have lotion on them....the oils get in the water and are a good attractant for big cats...
Enter Iowa's Outdoors thanks i was always wondering why so many ppl rave of them. makes sense
how do they taste. idea for catch and cook lol
I've never eaten skipjack herring. I use it for catfish bait.
Where can you purchase Foley skip jack spoon?
bottomdwellerstackle.com/product/foley-spoons/
The best way to catch skip jack is a white and red curly Tale
How long do skipjack stay fresh for?
They can stay fresh for a good while. I typically spend a few days every year filling my freezer with skipjack. I vacuum seal them to keep them fresh as possible.
Chatt Cats Fishing ok thanks, I love watching your videos. I don't live to far from Chattanooga. I have never fished up at Chicamaga dam. I would love to come fishing with you sometime.
OH DAD!!!!!!!!
Haha. Oh, Dad!
hey man I'm 16 and every time I tried live bait or catching them and letting them die I always feel awful about it.how do I change my mind set about it
William Dawson think of it this way there bait fish ... they were put on earth for two things to breed and feed other fish
Hmm OK thanks man
Are they skipjack still up in there?
I haven't tried in a while but I would think they are still around. They are for sure at Nickajack Dam
Chatt Cats Fishing thank you
where is it at?
Below Chickamauga Dam
Y r people so nice in the south
Good values attract good people
CatfishinTheEast were just polite thugs were nice till u fuck up lol
Thinking Junish
Are those white perch or daise?
They are skipjack herring
Thank you i just stocked up on a cooler full of daise they look relativley close and was wondering if theyd work the same. I just started catfishing cause of your videos so thanks for that lol
what's the limits on skipjacks
I think the creel limit is 100 per day. That's for TN.
Have you ever tried Sabiki rigs to catch Skipjacks from your boat?
I have not. But they work great.
Looks like shad.
do they get bigger than that ?
Yes. Average skipjack size is around 1-2 lbs
That's a good size .
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
1st
Nice!
oversized herring.
Sir, you make other people trying to fish around you look dumb. 🙄
Wow, I'm not sure how you got that out of this video. That is never my intent when fishing with or around other people.
What rod and reel were you using
I was using the Gander Mountain "Competitor" rod/reel combo.
