is there a surprise to a comedian or any/every celebrity doing a bit on a talk show? Only Letterman, the GOAT, went off script (which is why he made it a show of throwing the blue note cards through the fake windows) because he'd rather start beef with egotists like Madonna, Juaquin Phoenix or Lady GaGa, which is far more entertaining then talking about the boring things their publicists want them to promote - which sets this clip aside as one must admit this was a murderess construct by Jelinek in front of a large broadcast audience who now knows his work and a solid reason he will be known as a Legend.
I have watched standup for over 60 years. Jeselnik does not necessarily have the best material I have ever seen-although it is very, very good-but he has, hands down, the best timing. His pregnant pauses allow the audience to fill in the punch line, and then, he goes off on a totally separate tangent. He is brilliant.
I agree 100% to this comment. humor is all about timing and how to come across. The actual joke is only a small part of it. There are way too many standup comedians just telling jokes.
thanks jb. i guess technically it was like a 6 minute story. and its a story about him offering up the wardens daughter to a bunch of prisoners. whats not to get
He definitely just flat out makes up stories in his stand up for sure, and some of this is probably exaggerated, but he definitely went to San quentin to open for QOTSA, he talked about it before and then afterwards on his podcast, and told a pretty similar story straight after.
Jeselnik is just another level of class. It's great to see darker comedians getting airtime on mainstream chat shows. Anthony and Daniel Sloss are both killing it 👌
@@brianmaher22 I personally prefer Anthony. It's natural. Like that's just how he is. With Tosh, it's like he is purposefully trying to be dark to get a reaction.
He wrote it, and it's really well-written. Who cares if he's sitting or standing when he tells it? Comedian guests on late night shows don't come up with these stories on the spot. Most of them are telling a prepared story/anecdote. They're all doing material.
Sad thing is you guys didn't get that the warden WAS a fan...and that Jeselnik thinks the warden is cool. It shows the cleverness of Jeselnik's writing, but it also shows your low comprehension skills.
@@nateriver2132 The girlfriend's new haircut is too horrible to the point that he can't stand it and will be looking for a new girlfriend. That was one of the greatest talk show anecdotes I’ve ever seen. What a badass comedian. And he kicks it with Queens, which is even more ultimately badass.
In 1962 the number one person on TV was Bishop Sheen. He was invited to give a talk at a prison The warden warned him before he took the stage “Listen, these are not house wives, these are hard core murders So don’t think you can just talk to them like regular folk.” The bishop thanked him and walked on stage and began. “There is only one difference between me and you, you got caught.” He got a massive standing ovation.
@@BadassRandomness No, admittedly Jeselnik has that on him. But has Jeselnik ever made a religious joke in Indiana that got taken as so offensive he was threatened with a gun on the spot?
Simply a genius. The only comic who can tell five jokes in 30 minutes and be absolutely hysterical doing it. BTW....he's about two decibels away from sounding like Christopher Walken.
Right! His stand-up material and the style gets old real fast after seeing just one special. This video was the best footage I've ever seen of him in a while.
I don't know that I've ever seen a better constructed late night guest story than this, other than Nathan Fielder's terrifically weird stunts. This is fantastic, with a crazy-good singer of a punchline. Wow.
He's not wrong about the crowds sometimes, I saw him in Chicago and this dude, who apparently was there as a last replacement with his friends, was so offended by everything he said. He was standing next to me, I finally had to confront him because I could hear him over Jeselnik. He was admonishing the crowd, calling them terrible people, etc. I finally told "do you think anyone here cares?" He got all in my face, his friends noticed came over and actually took my side, lol, 2 of his buddies took him away from me, his 3rd friend apologized and bought me a drink, he explained to me that that one guy didn't know who Jeselnik was and only came because their other friend couldn't make it. It was hilarious. Love this dude. ✌🏼
Jeselnik is my favorite comedian working today. He tells AWESOME joke STORIES instead of lame one-liners. He is so original that I can't even think of a single comic to compare him too. But that can also be a curse. Another favorite comic of mine was the late, great MITCH HEDBERG who was so original the networks didn't know what to do with him so he never became the next SEINFELD, even though he was MUCH funnier.Hard to believe the day after tomorrow will be the 15th anniversary of his death. RIP MITCHIE!!
Perfectly executed closing line... we all know it didn't happen, but still entertaining nonetheless. (and, yes, I know he played San Q with them, I've seen the pictures... I meant the punchline)
His slow paced humour is the best for dark comedy!
Manilka Sheran Yeah, people say they like Dave Attell better, but his speed ruins his jokes I feel
Jeselnik is an evil Mitch Hedberg. Best comedian working today. Excellent misdirection comic with short sharp jokes.
@Jeff B it's a compliment to both of them. *tips fedora*
The way he takes his time, it’s him displaying his control of the crowd.
It lets what he says sink in and simmer in your mind lol
he legit did a solid 10 minute set right there
For real, this was an actual set. Looked very well rehearsed talking points.
That's the way talk shows work. 😂

If you watch him on podcasts he talks pretty different so this kind of makes sense tbh

Kind of true. He's doing a character based on elements of himself.

Never seen Jimmy Kimmel laugh this hard and for so long...
Bill Hader had him laughing like that about a month ago.

He seemed like he was faking it a little lol
I love that he calmly, clearly and with such purpose and deliberate pace, says things that people would never dare say quietly or with haste.

His recounting of this is note perfect from beginning to end. Best job of comedic storytelling I have heard on a talk show in 50 years.
Norm macdonalds last dying wish from a child cancer sufferer tale . Is also a ripping yarn .
Perfect delivery. Making it seem like he's just talking to Jimmy and not towards the audience.
yeah that has been getting to me in interviews lately. it was refreshing to see otherwise
“On Tv talking like it’s just you and me..” Kanye West
“Now keep in mind Jimmy, that’s not what I’m going to do at all.”
