I had to get a replacement horn in the middle of the school year, and the one they gave me was brand new, the school bought it that year. I refused to take back my old one. Now marching band rolls around and I’m expecting to get the old, rusting mello I had last year. Surprise! The whole section got new mellos. Like, still wrapped up in plastic, not a single fingerprint new. We all were just staring in awe for the first half of practice.
It's so hard to find any principal hornist (or just a prominent hornist in such a high caliber symphony orchestra) who is female... My daughter is so inspired. Thank you Sarah.
+gishman2 Yes, Germans usually spend around six years learning English while in school, and they learn Oxford English, so they tend to have very nice, English accents.
I believe she mentioned when she joined the Berlin Philharmonic she did not know, or did not know much, German and had to learn. But do not take my word for it
What a beautiful sound you make Sarah on the lower register, which, as we brass players know, is where the skill is. An excellent technique and a great presenter. Brava!
My jaw drop when i hear her play. She is amazing with all the low notes. All the notes that she played was so full and round. I'm gald that I have found such an amazing video. This really help me a lot.
Estevan Hinojosa I'm pretty sure she means that because she's a low horn player (she plays 4th) she hasn't preformed the solo before not that it would be a range issue
Doesn't sound rushed to me. Do you know the part? The rhythm is trickier than you'd think just hearing it without seeing the score (each of the three iterations starting with the perfect fourth begin on a different beat of the 6/8).
Iam sure this will be one of the most watched horn videos on youtube, I like the way Sarah says "I will try and play"..... then goes ahead and plays it fantasticley with apparently no effort at all! Thankyou
Merci :)
I wish I had been able to play the horn like that when I was in college. That horn is beautiful, but my 5 valve horn was beautiful right after it had been refinished back then, my orchestra director always loved to show off my 5 valve horn when they got together, its pretty rare, I've never seen another 5 valve French Horn.
"if you dont agree, you are envy!!" I mean...I really like Sarah Willis, but please? Why the shit would you say such cringy childish crap? People can have opinions.
This whole entire comment section is joke lmao, one person on fcking love with like a 40 year old person... another person is roasting the person... and another person made a sex joke. Lmao this is too funny
You know, I listened to both Clevenger and Myers play this piece before this has to be my favorite recording though, because most horns can get that low but they cannot get it solid as Sarah, She is a Low Horn player so she can go circles around a lot of 1st horns. I loved this version thank you, Absolutely perfect
I play french horn and am watching this for an assignment and Im impressed the tone is amazing the slurs are just *chef kiss* I wish I could play that good ❤️
Thank you Sarah, you are a wonderful teacher! Your humility and mad skills are inspiring, and more horn players could use those attributes. This master class was fun and informative, and your tone is solid gold. Thank you for your example to all horn players everywhere!!
I’ll never forget the time when playing clarinet with a major Canadian orchestra which shall not be named, I was sitting in front of the fourth horn player when she bombed the Beethoven 9th fourth horn solo and then, in front of the entire orchestra, soloists, chorus and audience, she dropped the F bomb. It’s seared into my musical memory forever.
@Haeronthegreat they both have their cons and pros and areas of praise. I think they are equally impressive. What is most interesting is that you have to develop your low register before you can develop a great high register. You can play low horn for quite a long time, but it takes a lot of endurance building to play high for a long time.
I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah and her colleagues at IHS47 where a work of mine was premiered. As a composer, I found this video most helpful. Thank you so much for sharing!
great lesson of Sara, his interpretation of a fragment of 4th horn of Beethoven's Ninth has a level of complexity atlo but with the advice and recommendations of Sarah, seems to be easy. Great horn player, congratulations
THE master of the low range. Look up the Berlin Horn Ensemble on here if you guys and gals want to see more of her low playing. It's sickening how good she is.

I am going to be a horn major for college and I have a question. What is the difference between the low horn player and the lead horn players? You all sound the same and are really good.
You know, I'm really sick of people asking what horn or what mouthpiece she uses as if she's only good because of her mouthpiece. I guarantee she would sound absolutely fabulous on any horn and any mouthpiece. Instead, you should be asking who she takes/took lessons from, her favorite horn players to listen to, what books she studies out of, her practice schedule.
@Fhorn5114 Yes I agree, it's the player that makes a good Horn sound. I spoke to a czech and told me its all stomach, throat, and shaping of the tongue for difference in sound :)
This is Sarah's reply: "I recommend taking a breath where you need it but so that it doesnt disturb the musical line of the exerpt..but everyone is different!"
French translation error. At 3:23, should be : "Aussi, le fa doit être joué un peu haut, mais il est souvent joué très bas. Alors, plus vous ouvrez la main, plus il sera haut.""
Just wondering, is anybody allowed to just walk on stage and say they want to audition for the Berlin Phil, or are there long processes in order to get to that point in which you're performing for them?
my hunch is that it's simply not needed, the midrange of the horn is covered by the horns and reeds as it is, as well as the nature of the horn in general being at its best in concert halls as big as this one. That being said however, there are jazz horn players like James Macdonald or Don Elliot if you want to dip your toes in that world
