    What makes me think it may be a sequel still is the fact that they showed exact clips from advent children in ff7r during the fight with the arbiter of fate. We fight and kill the arbiter and manifestations of Kadaj, Loz and Yazoo from Advent Children. After defeating them I believe we may given freedom to original og sephiroth from what I can tell . It seems he was imprisoned and we were manipulated the whole game to essentially free him . The developers want us to know advent children for a good reason. It’s also interesting that advent children is going to be in theaters right before rebirth is released too.

    You're right. This is done in film and television a lot.

    I feel if it were merely a reimagining of FF7 Aerith and Sephiroth wouldn't have access to these fate defying powers from the get-go. Aerith's touch that awakens Cloud and calms Red XIII, and both of their visions of the future, solidified in my mind that we are at least dealing with an element of time reversal if nothing else. While it does seem as if the development team is introducing loads of elements that had been left on the cutting room floor, their philosophy seems as if they aren't trying to replace the original game in our minds, but expand upon it in so far as they could while keeping the compilation canon as a whole.

      Thy is actually literally reimagining the characters

    • @Nero_Jero
      @Nero_Jero 9 месяцев назад +3

      A big reason why I feel there's some "time reversal" as you say is Aerith's reaction when Cloud asked her "What's special about today?" after they first met. She definitely KNOWS something.
      Oh and of course the "You can't fall in love with me."

      @@Nero_Jero I got the Aerith night sequence during my first playthrough and it blew my mind. I felt like Cloud was literally talking to post compilation Aerith. From there I always thought of the flowers representing Aerith from the original lifestream, but interpreted as Aerith's Mother to Remake's Aerith. In Advent Children both Kadaj and Cloud mistake Aerith as Mother in the presence of the lifestream. I feel these games are the last of the compilation gross lifestream timeline wise, but all the character's still have new development left to go.

    Remake's in other forms of media are rarely 1:1 'remakes'. Whether we are talking about songs, movies, books, etc., artistic liberties are generally par for the course. Because generally speaking, the purpose of a remake is for the sake of adaptation. Thus, I don't see a reason that a sequel can't be adapted to also be a remake. Especially if time travel is involved.
    And that is basically what I think FFVIIR is. A remake that is also a sequel.

  • @ETHomerin
    @ETHomerin 9 месяцев назад +1

    I agree with so much of this. I'm going to make an analogy because anything else would take to long. FFVII was a perfect cake without frosting. The compilation was the frosting, and while a lot of it was great frosting the bakers had it in them to make another cake. Now the new cake is very carefully decorated like a masterpiece. Some of the people who eat the new cake might want it on it's own plate, and others will want to mix it with the old leftovers, but either way we're all having a little party while eating it lol

    I don't think you're off base about anything else, but the OG game and the future are both at play in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. There's a part during the harbinger or maybe it's after the sephiroth fight I don't remember, but you get to see snippets from the future of the series (for example Red's pups) as it seems like those future memories are erased. Also the flavor text for the whisper generals you have to fight says that they came from the future. *mic drop ;)

    I've been pretty upset about them not doing a full on remake, a 100% retelling. BUT as soon as they even announced it would be in several parts years before remakes release, I've been looking at it not as a faithful remake.
    it's more of a 2020+ game adaptation of a 1997 game - much how the hobbit movies went from one book to three movies. things are added, things are lost but more importantly cinematography over text is also added. which adds so much to the experience, it adds performances etc.
    BUT it being an adaptation, it's not going to be using the script of FF7-97. the devs have said that they wish to remake it faithfully though - so how do we reconcile these widely different events and motivations versus a faithful remake? I believe that what the devs mean is that what the experience of FF7-97 gave you upon first playthrough is what they are replicating, in terms of narrative/story even for diehard fans. because if you think about it:
    1. 90% of remake was faithful to the source, but enhanced.
    2. the diverging elements are : Sephiroth and Aerith.
    Sephiroth in the OG was a force of mystery and "unimaginable" power - how do you recreate that if people have the script of FF7-97 out there. You change things, you make him alter events as a force for evil. He deliberately "wastes" Clouds time in chpt2 in order to have Cloud and Aerith not meet. which was foiled by the whispers.
    now with this new plot of altering/straying away from FF7s plot you can have Sephiroth be this enigmatic and seemingly omnipotent being since he's conquering the lifestream.
    3. that makes both Sephiroth and Aeriths fate no longer set in stone - another way to illicit the experience OG brought in 97 of having you lose Aerith suddenly, abruptly and without warning.
    how many people are not right now saying that remaining true to OG is counter to what they did with the whispers? that's the seed of doubt needed to have you not play Rebirth from the start, bracing yourself for Aeriths death.
    I'd liken it to the scene in Inside out - where memories are changed from happy to sad or bittersweet - the devs want us to not go through rebirth with those events already colored as bittersweet but happy until the shift, if there is a shift.
    so whilst all is up in the air, I'm not seeing what the devs are doing as purposely destroying what FF7 was or is - or belittling FF7 as some inferior story to remake, they are trying to capture what FF7-97 is in this ADAPTATION made in 2020+

    • @chainclaw07
      @chainclaw07 9 месяцев назад

      there are gonig to be things going differently but the characters will be the same, because we are starting Rebirth with the flashback, we're going to get a resolution to that earlier than in the og. before ancient city even ... which I doubt will be the same story but I'm excited to MAYBE be blown away with how they tell things this way around.

    The Time Guardian sort of gives precedence for time shenanigans. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a sequel.. but could possibly be viewed as both in a way. They may just be showing us things that they weren’t able to in the OG, maybe they were cut, maybe they couldn’t fit it all, as you said.

    Certain story elements that didn't make it into FFVII were used in VIII. The characters Fujin and Raijin and Sorceress Edea's visual design were created during production of VII, and I wouldn't be surprised if the concept of the gunblade was invented at the same time; it feels like it would belong in VII's universe. The gunblade reappeared in XIII, which has more story elements in common with VII than any other game in the series, with the exception of X. I think it would be a nice little Easter Egg if Cloud or Vincent got access to a gunblade at some point in the Remake project.

    Wow, I truly hope you are wrong, and I'm not sure how you can confidently state it with 99.9% certainty when there are so many contrasting, compelling ideas out there. And like you said yourself, there's so much still that we don't know and have yet to see.
    The simple standalone 'reimagining' would be the most disappointing theory of all to come true in my opinion, and I imagine there would be a lot of backlash. It's basically the storytelling equivalent, after purposefully building up so much intrigue, of saying "It (the original and all these flash forwards we keep getting in the game) was all a dream." ~ Square surely wouldn't do us dirty like that. It's actually far worse than a simple "it was all a dream" ending, because what you are saying is "it was all an extremely convoluted and misleading dream being had by the planet which you had no way to understand as you were playing"... sounds like some absolutely dogshit storytelling to me haha.
    And I guess the Stamp logo being different would have been nothing more than an extremely cruel red herring they left us to discuss for 4 years? Because having a dog logo on a packet of chips and then replacing it with a different one sure doesn't sound like an idea they had 27 years ago that they just had no way to squeeze into the original game.
    I think far more likely than you ever being definitively proven right on this (and also a disappointing ending) would be that they keep it very vague and open for the entire trilogy, and everyone gets to still think their theories are right by the end 😅. Then the debates can rage on for another 20 years til 'Re-Remake'

    Very well stated.
    A lot of western entertainment fans don't understand that the metatextual aspect of Japanese storytelling is WILDLY different to ours.
    It's existed as far back as their history goes. They're not invested in canonicity the way western media it. They're not trying to tie every detail together or explain everything meticulously. The focus of their stories are on the ideas and the themes, not the superficial semantics of the plot.
    In Japanese literature, stories will often have multiple versions, with the only true connection between them being that they're based on the same source. It isn't any more complicated that that. And that isn't a criticism against them - complexity =/= depth.
    I'm not personally a fan of the new additions, but I respect the intent, and the execution is hard to flaw. I choose to take the elements of the FF7 "remakes" that I enjoy, and move past the elements that I don't.

      Do we KNOW it’s the bad ending? A lot of conjecture flying around online but nothing concrete.

      @@RayCoffman the game literally has Red say "a future that comes about if we FAIL here" - failing would be bad now wouldn't it?
      it would be undesirable - to the characters who speak that way.
      turning the characters against the OG ending might be Sephiroths doing BUT the scenario was written for this to be the case - the party has been turned against the OG ff7 events. some would consider that disrespectful or a way for the devs to highlight that ending as the BAD one compared to what they're cooking up for the ending of the remake trilogy. essentially saying "when this is all over you guys will see that this ending is so much better than OG ff7s and that warrants us changing things"
      and just the notion of antagonising your diehard fans is not conductive to a good relationship with them. So - what is worth doing that? and in regards to "is it the bad ending" what other hints do we have to consider for us to BELIEVE that's what the devs are telling the story as?
