This might be my favorite episode. Not very action-filled or loud; just a simple, quiet journey of Morpheus trying to understand human life through a human and another Endless.

I think it makes sense that Hob isn't a billionaire. He's not the brightest person in the world, he's more into living in the moment rather than planning his life and buying land and etc.

    • @bouboulroz

Hob himself says that even though he learns from his mistakes, he just can't help but repeating them.
There's also the question of would being a powerful billionaire satisfy Hob ? He already knows what being rich and influencial feels like. But he's the kind of person that strikes me as being satisfied having just enough money to always live in comfort (and even a bit of luxury) in his day to day life, but not needing more.
It's not about the power money gives him, it's about having enough to afford and enjoy whatever new experience life has to offer.

I think the point of this episode is: in the first part, it's trying to say that maybe death isn't as scary as most people think. That maybe death is a friendly face and when it comes, we should embrace it the same way we embrace life. And for the second part, maybe it's trying to say that there's so much to live for. That even if the first part is about embracing death, we should continue living our lives to the fullest and see the many reasons to live.
It's just ironic that Death in this episode is so warm and so full of life. Meanwhile, Dream is just sad, lonely and confused. Maybe because most of our dreams are dead haha.

'Sound of Her Wings' is in many ways an epilogue to the sort of "arc" that happens in episodes 1-5. Dream has to sit with the fact that he's completed his quest and feels empty about it. He had 100 years to sit and think about being free and getting his tools back, but now it's all over. Death has to remind him of his true purpose. Sandman as a whole is much more of an anthology series, but the show has done a pretty solid job of finding a way to have an overall arc while still maintaining the anthology aspect.

  • @jmhaces

I always took it to mean that Dream isn't so much confused about mortals as removed from them at this point in his existence and he just can't relate to their brief lives and trivial concerns. As Death says, she went through something similar at some point when she didn't see her connection to sentient beings and started struggling with her duties until she figured it out, and Dream tells her that thanks to her he learned something he had forgotten, so he already knew it at some point and over the millennia he just got caught up in his duties and became aloof, which I'd assume is a risk for all the Endless given their eternal nature. I mean, we already saw that 10,000 years ago he had a human lover that's now trapped in Hell, so at some point he was in fact more involved with mortals and even now he has moments where he shows compassion and empathy, like when he chose not to punish John Dee by killing him because he decided the Ruby drove him mad and it wasn't his fault because he simply was a mortal that couldn't handle the Ruby's power.

Dream runs a kingdom. He has to delegate a lot of the process to his creations, and a lot of the direct interactions with humanity is done by the dreams and nightmares he created to do the task. And he does it for everyone every time they are dreaming. He's basically a manager, and is very busy with the work. His sister can spend a bit of time with each person, and really make the effort to connect. People dream far more often than they die. It's a matter of time and scale of the job that they do.

Historically there actually was a sleeping sickness called Encephalitis Lethargica first written about in 1917 which affected people all over the world ........ the factual cause of which was never actually discovered, but a cure of sorts was eventually discovered many decades later and is the subject of the movie Awakenings, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.

I believe the feeling of unsatisfactory comes from typical storytelling 3 act structure. We as an audience get used to the mindset that every story needs a low, a high and an end. That's a simplistic way of thinking of life from our limited, immediate human expectations. I see that as a positive since it gives people the tools to fill the gaps with their own input. It's up to all of us and I love it when writers enable viewers to be autonomous

Though I will say that whenever a really good, intelligent piece of writing occurs, people complain that it’s vague, or they expected a different ending etc., so it’s possible the writers feel that have to dumb things down for their customer base.

As I understand, the Endless exist to serve humans, and Dream has been doing his job, while remaining detached from the humans he serves. He remains an outsider (like Dr. Manhattan in Watchmen, in the beginning), without trying to empathize with the humans, because he is, for all practical purposes completely different to them, and being beyond human concerns and limitations. Death, on the other hand, deals with the very human raw emotion of fear (of death), on a daily basis, and ends up becoming more human (or at least learns to appreciate the depth of emotion, and the importance of her purpose). The other Endless (Desire, mostly, supported by Delirium and Despair), are also involved with humans, but treat them as inferior, and to be toyed with, thus creating friction with Dream.
That said, Dream is not completely aloof all the time - his story arc with Nada shows that he occasionally gets involved emotionally with humans, but after that incident, consciously avoids getting involved with humans beyond his role. His imprisonment, escape, interaction with John Dee and Hob Gadling all serve the purpose of showing him evolving into a being that is learning to relate to humans, and learning to deal with the all-too-human existential crisis he is facing (at the beginning of the episode), by examining his purpose and relationships.

  • @myafelicia

Death once decided that she would live as a human being one day per year. She doesn't experience humans through dreams: she lives and breathes alongside them while Dream stays mostly in his own realm due to his sense of betrayal and heartache after his romances with at least one mortal woman.
One thing about the immortal guy, to answer Gaby's question: Dream did recommend him to lay low in order not to be noticed. After his rich life, he did lose his family and then the villagers noticed his supernatural youth and lifespan; even Lady Constantine picked up their trail. Would it then really be wise to become the world's richest and/or most powerful man on Earth during eras when people were extremely superstitious about almost everything!?!

In the light novel/anime series "Baccano", there's a phrase that gets shown once, I think as a chapter title. It goes something like, "Those who live forever and those who don't love life equally." In that series, there are people who attained immortality and came to think of it as a curse, but being mortal wouldn't have made them any happier. There are also people who become immortal and, like Hob Gadling here, just live their lives through the ups and downs.
And then there's Isaac and Miria who became immortal and didn't even realize it for decades.

I believe the problem some people may have with Neil Gaiman stories is, at its core, he is working towards breaking down myths and showing they are essentially as human and flawed as anyone else.
When people come to his work expecting the grandiose and ambition you see on anime or other shows dealing with mythology it is not there neither meant to be.
    It is essentially deconstruction.
All the characters are just like us despite the powers and positions they had. It is a common theme through his work.
I personally like and find it more meaningful.
It is usually what attracts or repels people from his work but you can't demand things from an artist that he never intended on his work.

Dream sees people as things in a story - he is the "Prince of Stories" after all.
Also the unconscious is a lot harder to interpret than conscious actions, I think Death empathizes more than Dream because she sees that everyone suffers the same fate, it is more concrete and it's always terrible... everyone struggles to accept, and she has to be there for them. Dream doesn't go through this as a deep experience, the dreams of others for him are just stories.
Also take into account Death has been around a lot longer, and she went through a "fed up" phase as well

Ditto Hob and Dream's interactions are in my top 5 moments/scenes from this show. There's just something marvelous and pure about the multi-century friendship that develops, and Hob's character is great.

Men of Good Fortune was such a wild and out of left field kind of story I was not expecting them to include it in the show. And while yes this is an anthology type series there are threads that tie different things together. For example, near the beginning of the series Dream tells the 3 Fates that he knew of a Constantine a few hundred years ago and this episode reveals another Johanna Constantine was who he was talking about. Both here and in the comics Dream mentions the faeries leaving Earth and he cuts a deal with William Shakespeare and a few issues later we see a sort of continuation of those threads in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I’m only at episode 6 atm so I’m curious to see if they’ll show us Midsummer Night’s Dream

How could *anyone* not be 'satisfied' by this episode? It was the best of the season, imo.
Someone (clearly) did not 'get this'.
CLUE: She is fucking brilliant! Not just source material, she's got a great handle on the human experience as a whole. She has a way of embracing and expressing the abstract into something tangible - these complex, yet explainable ideas and themes!
Again, just fucking brilliantly and emotionally savvy. 🤗

This is honestly one of the best episodes of tv of all time. The whole episode could’ve been just about Dream traveling and talking with Death while she is guiding souls to the afterlife. I mean first the scene with her guiding the old man, letting him say the Shema prayer made me tear up right away, and I’m not even Jewish. But then they show us the story of Hob Gadling and I could NOT take my eyes off the screen for a second.
I’ve been on the side that thinks immortality for mortals is a curse, that over time your moral compass would break, you would look at other mortals as just insects, and your own sense of humanity (your soul, spirit, chi, ka, whatever you want to call it) would crumble away into dust. But Hob Gadling is a truly exceptional man for living as long as he had and not become either a power hungry psychopath or just an outright piece of crap. Yes he veered off the path and was involved briefly in the slave trade, but Morpheus managed to show him the error of his ways. Hob is the embodiment of looking at the bright side! And Hob had an effect on Morpheus because after spending so much time with Hob he actually did come to care for him. And in the end Dream finally admitted that he and Hob were friends.

could not disagree more about Gaiman stories not being satisfying, or not having much meaning or purpose...and Jaby saying "no, they won't" about whether they'll explore more of the Shakespeare story indicates a clear bias...you had no reason to assume they won't (and yes, they will).
if you don't get the point of this episode, idk what to tell you...
Sandman is all about *change* more than anything else. it's the central theme; that change is necessary and inevitable, and we shouldn't fear it. a lot of the story is about Morpheus's (ironic) resistance to change (despite being the lord of a realm without a static reality). in this episode, his views on life, humanity, and himself, changed. he learned that he does actually need companionship. he learned from his sister and her interactions with humanity. that first half also had other themes along the same lines; viewing death as just the next phase. a big change, but not one to fear
idk how someone could find Gaiman stories unsatisfying...

Death exists in the world and deals directly with people's lives while Dream tends to stay in his realm and remain aloof, using his tools and creations as intermediaries to avoid dealing with dreaming minds directly because otherwise he'd be overwhelmed by all the thoughts and emotions, like an empath who's so sensitive to everyone around them that they become a bit of a shut in and seem more stoic on the outside.
The meaning of the episode to me is twofold (understandably so since it's combining two entirely different issues of the comic that came out months apart, but the show does a brilliant job of elegantly weaving them together to juxtapose them both). To sum it up in the simplest terms, death isn't so bad...but life is pretty damn good, too! I'm a bit biased because Death and Hob are my two favorite characters from the comic, but this is my favorite episode of the entire series!
Oh, and Hob says at a couple of points in later centuries that he's put money away all over the world in case he needs to get away quickly, but he's also learned the value of living a quiet life and not drawing too much attention since his neighbors turned on him the last time he got careless and stuck around in one place too long. I also think he rather enjoys the simple pleasures and doesn't have much time for "power" or living a wealthy lifestyle (again, he's learned how temporary and futile such living can be. The Queen slept in his house, but it didn't impress his friend or stop him from losing everything and having to live in the streets within a century). I also got the implication that he'd bought/built the new pub we see at the end, specifically so Dream would hopefully be able to find him, so he is using his money for something other than building ships (and erroneously funding the evils done with them, ahem) these days.

They actually showed this better in series in comics you didn't quite understand that Dream missed his meeting and Hob was sitting there every day for years(!) waiting for him. In the book it was just another meeting and you didn't quite get that it was different from any other times they have met in the past. Dream was captured in 1916 so that would mean Hob waited at least 30 years probably more. Pretty loyal friend.

Actually, in first episode guard is reading Sun dated 5/26/2021 when Dream gets out. Taking into consideration he would need time to take his things in hands before he meets Death for a walk Hob has waited for him for 33 years. Pretty symbolic.

This was my single favorite episode of the show so far. Hob is my favorite character from the comics, and his story is just... amazing. I'm _honestly_ on the same page as him. Death's a mug's game. Look, I'm not someone of grand ambition, my ambition really comes down to enjoying the experience of life and doing the best that I can in the world. So, that's why I see myself as on the same wavelength as Hob. If I could make a deal to meet with Dream every century, I'd happily take it XD I'm really happy that they incorporated his story into the story of Dream's meeting with Death. Otherwise, it wouldn't have made it into the first season of the show, and I am so happy to have two of my favorite vignettes together in one episode. That's really the core of Sandman... there's very little continuous story, just... vignettes and cohesive arcs. It's one of the very nice things about the story, in my opinion.
And, ultimately, _yes_... it _is_ the experience that is the most important thing in a Gaiman story most often. He doesn't necessarily write to create a perfect narrative, I feel, he writes to communicate what (in his opinion) is a fundamental truth. In his Masterclass (which is quite worth taking in), he talks about how authors use lies to tell their audiences true things. Not that he sees himself as someone with a firm hand on the true nature of the world, and the owner of deep, hidden truths, but he has beliefs and views that he builds his stories around in order to communicate those ideas. If the story reaches a "traditional" endpoint that people are trained to register as "satisfying," that is all well and good, but it is never the fundamental goal of the story. The goal is to communicate the idea he was working with.
If you want some Gaiman stories that hit very well on that "unsettling" note, you really should read (or listen to on Audible) his collection of short stories "Fragile Things." It is very unsettling, but in the most enjoyable ways that I've come across. It isn't grotesque, but it is... eerie and, yes, unsettling.

There is something quite touching about this weird friendship. Yes, this was a good episode. I haven't really read many of Neil Gaiman's works, but his Death seems to be somewhat similar to DEATH in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, minus the love of cats and the empathy, and speaking like an ordinary person, oh, and the sex... Hmm, maybe they are not that similar after all. I should read these again.

To answer Jaby's question on why would Dream not understand humans more than Death, The Endless are lords of their concept as well as the opposite of it. Like Destruction is to creation and Despair is to hope, Death is to life. She pretty much understands more of people living.

Recently Gaiman shared what Hobs was doing when Dream comes into the New Inn. Hobs is a history teacher.
The difference between the vampire stories and hob is the humanity. Vampires are so limited in their enjoyment of immortality. Humans can change and grow and experience everything.

    1. Worth noting that in the comics, Death wasn't always as sympathetic as she is in the present. Gaiman actually did a miniseries (I think it's "Death: The High Cost of Living") where we find out how she becomes the sympathetic person we see here. Interestingly, in the issue about Hob, we meet the "before" version of Death. I wonder if they will readapt that part of the story and put it into the series elsewhere, or if they get to spin Death into her own series.
    2. Also worth noting that the comics ran from 1989 to 1995, so their "present" was 1989, and Dream was not late for his meeting with Hob. Moving the present to 2022 gave them a chance to see how Dream missing the meeting made Hob feel.
My own head canon about this new reality is that Hob did help finance the move of the inn to it's new location, but that he wasn't there all the time, just the same day every year when they are supposed to meet up. And speaking to why Hob isn't a billionaire, we saw a version of that in 1589. You have to be pretty rich to host the Queen, so Hob was definitely the 1% of that age, and then he lost it all. I don't know if Gaiman intended to address the issue, but being very rich would make it hard to disappear and come back as your own child. We hear that Hob was accused of performing witchcraft, and the 1789 meeting slightly speaks to the idea that people have a memory of these once a century meetings. I suspect that Hob worked out how much money/valuables he needed to save up, and just moved it from bank to bank or house to house, instead of trying to build something so large that he would have to hang around to manage it.

17:50 While I don't personally understand it, some people have a need for resolution, and I think that's what that person was getting at with their comment. Ultimately, I think The Sandman is less about plot structure and 3 act stories, etc. and more about being with these characters as they go through the story. The events ultimately don't matter, but the way those events impact the characters does. It's like some people are predisposed to not seeing the forest for the trees, I guess.

From what I interpreted, death has more experience with life working with people personally, whereas dream is only involved with people in their dreams and nightmares telling them stories, while death knows the human passion and emotions while involving with human life and death situation and this is what Dream is trying to figure out with the project of 100 years.
    That's what I think.

I’m a big Sandman and Neil Gaiman fan… and much of his work is about the power of stories (and dreams, and mythology) and it’s often not very linear. Parts of it can be, parts of it are just an interesting tale. Both halves of this ep are about life and death and what mortality means. It won’t necessarily work for everyone, but I find his style really compelling. FWIW, the back half of the season is a bit more of a connected arc.

I JUST LOVE how right after the darkest, most twisted episode of television i've ever seen (the diner), we then see the most wholesome one. It kinda has the same tone/message of the previous episode in which no matter how dark/twisted humanity can be, there is always hope that things will get better (which is one of the main theme in the hell episode)
