Parent to parent. I told you.
When I watched this episode, I thought about Nikki, & how she'd... dislike the baby part, but by the ending, I thought the episode was so beautifully written that I figured Nikki would appreciate the story, more than a short sad, yet beautiful, scene.
I think I was right.
Either way, this was an incredible episode!
🤘😁
As for the style of the show, I believe they're doing every episode as one comic...
(You guys do know this is based on a comic book, right?!)
I own, & have read, several of the comics, & they're alot like an anthology, so thinking it's like the 'Twilight Zone,' is pretty on point! Though, just like the show, there is a small thread of a bigger story, but it's very much of 'slow burn.' I don't think this show has a season 2, yet, but hopefully enogh people will tweet at Netflix, until they get another season! Lol. 🤘😁
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention something ...
I mentioned that the episodes are based on the comics, (graphic novels,) but it's the imagination, & writing of NEIL GAIMAN that brings these stories,
& the amazing characters to life!
AND... If you're interested, there's an independent film, released in 2017, called...
"Sandman: 24 Hour Diner."
(* I copied the title from imdb, but I didn't expect the font! Lol...)
Anyway, the movie has some great reviews, & though it was a 'fan film,' & Neil Gaiman wasn't involved, it seems to be a really good flick!
Even Gaiman watched it, & thought it great. The reason I mention this film, is because the story in the movie is right out of a graphic novel, & it's also the same story from the show...& it's episode 5!
A couple things are different, like the person with the 'ruby' is a Doctor from Arkham Asylum!! 🤯
(That threw me for a second, lol.)
I haven't seen the film myself, but I accidentally clicked on a link, & I got a RUclips video with the whole movie!
The article I read did say that the movie's makers had a premier in Toronto, then they released the movie online for free!
So, I think I've typed enough nonsense for tonight. I hope these comments were slighly helpful. Maybe you guys could watch the film on your 'movie night' sometime. Or maybe just put it on in the background, just to check it out...I'm gonna check it out later...If you like, I could let you know how you'd feel about it, as I've been watching things with you two for years now, & I'm pretty sure I know your taste for stories, lol...
(Sorry, that sounded a bit stalkery.)
But if I gave you a review for this movie, I promise it won't be as long as this comment!!
Ok, I'm out...catch ya next vid! 🤘😁🤪🪓
Looking forward to the next episode of TLK, shit's gonna get crazy this season!!!
it WOULD be a trip to be able to say "i haven't heard that for 200 years." BUT, it would be an EVEN BIGGER TRIP to BE ABLE TO REMEMBER something from that long ago, since most people struggle to remember 30 or 40 years back. Imagine, you hear a song.....maybe even like the song.....like the pop 80's or pop 90's one hit wonders.......how many can you name? And for Dream to be able to simply say, "i haven't heard that for 200 years." REMEMBERING it immediately, AND how long ago it was that he last heard it.......THAT would be cool
Neil wrote death how he ideally wished he would experience it. A kind caring hand leading him on to whatever is or isn't ahead. Peaceful, reasuring and soothing.
Between this and Terry Pratchett's version of 'DEATH', They wrote a beautiful version of what dying would be like
In catholicism, especially Mexico, Death is seen as something other than bad and evil. La Santa Muerte or Saint Death is peace and love towards the afterlife, she is revered as the angel that leads souls in a peaceful hug to heaven
That would be fascinating I always thought I would get 360 no-scoped in a trickshot or get blowed tf up
then like a void transition realm before a perfect world forever or some such
I LOVE the fact that Neil and TPerry had a similar idea of death. A friendly person who will guide you over the finish line
I love how Death never introduces herself to anyone. There is always just that moment of recognition. This episode is incredible.
I've been told that not even the other Endless refer to her as "Death". Just "my sister" or some variation.
This is because in Sandman's mythology everyone sees death twice: one time on birth and the second on death. This is why people recognizes her immediately.
@@sollomom That gives so much more resonance to the baby and the way Death speaks to them. The baby just saw her.
@@mandialter5222 Despite been cut from the series, there was this dialogue on comics. The babe asks her if he shouldn't live more. This is why her answered "It's all you got.".
Such a wholesome and gentle episode after a psychological horror fest. I love the constant tonal changes in Sandman.
This episode feels like a reward for making it through episode 5.
This episode is a masterpiece. Gaiman's depiction of Death is sublime, and the actress (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) played it to perfection.
Really, the only way I think it could've been better is if Christina Ricci had portrayed Death.
She's the one I always wanted for the role, but Gaiman wanted as diverse a cast as possible, for the TV series, and Ricci would almost certainly have been too expensive, anyway.
Still, that's just a personal thing.
Howell-Baptiste did an excellent job.
KHB wasn't cast because she was black. She was cast because she was perfect. Proof: watch the episode.
She 100% nailed it.
She did, the episode was so impactful and she played it so very well. I think she nailed it.
@@thomashiggins9320 She probably auditioned for the character, but decided not to. People have the problem of thinking that physical appearance is the only necessary and sufficient thing, bu, it's much more important set the tone for the character. Also, we don't see her play the character, so how do you know she would be better? The choice was just perfect and impeccable and nobody could have done it better.
I loved how Death is never actually introduced, nor does she introduce herself. If you meet her, you know.
It´'s because she was there when we born. We know her
As someone whose struggled with suicidal depression this is my favorite episode showing someone never even considering to give up after lifetimes worth of pain, suffering, loss, and heartache.
I'm glad you had that takeaway from it. Death and Life are both invaluable and neither taken for granted.
As someone who's struggling with "suicidal depression" but also similarly managed to learn basic English...
Let it be known that we will not die and that is our eternal cross to bare.
@@sonofliberty1 As someone who just read a comment by a person being a dick and a grammar nazi to someone who admitted to having been suicidal, it's "cross to bear" not "bare." Apparently your lessons in basic English didn't stick as well as you claim.
me too. Hob just shows you how you can be so hopeful and enjoy life, despite all the bad. its so sweet .love him💜
Same
A cute detail you might have missed is that the current Hob is a history teacher. He's correcting papers in the Inn. I'd like to think he teaches the errors of not learning from your mistakes and the psychology behind slavery.
I never could tell what Hob was grading. That's a fascinating detail
As soon as they announced that they were adapting the Sandman as a series, this was immediately the story that I was hoping they'd be able to pull off. They did not disappoint.
Same. Also the one I was the most nervous they would screw up. :-/ :-)
Hob or Death? Hob is my favourite story in the books.
@@Ash16180 I meant death but Hob is amazing as well :-)
@@Ash16180 both i'd say ;)
This was absolutely the best one in the season.
Gaiman actually called this episode the reward for making it through the horrors of Episode 5. I love every time I see the look of realization as to who Death is.
11:02 Nikki's expression change from "Aww baby" to "Oh no, a baby"
I was sure Nikki was going to lose it like I did when I realized what was about to happen.
Having read the original story, what we get in the episode is *toned down* (and thank heavens for that).
I am so happy we were spared hearing the mother. Hearing the wife was painful enough. Hearing a mother's grief....
Desire (played by Mason Alexander Park) is everything. They are male, female, both and neither. They are everything you've ever wanted; passionately desperately, and to the exclusion of all else. We cannot help but love them, and hate them. They're the worst and the best. Enjoy what comes next as we will see them, and their twin sister: Despair.
There is something so magical, when you see a character and think, 'my god, it IS desire from the book'. Absolutely nailed it. The other side of the coin is Death. To change the iconic look of the ultimate goth girl, but then pull off the character so perfectly. So many happy things in this show for an old fan. Having said that, I implore everyone, find your way to the Sandman comics.
Completely agree, I can’t wait to see them sink even deeper in the role, if the show gets renewed. I absolutely loved the casting of everyone, but holy shit Mason is a perfect Desire.
@@syyneater show got renewed big boss
This was my favorite episode. Simple, quiet, but quite memorable for me.
it's also very sweet considering the subject matter. It actually makes dying feel very warm and lovely.
Mine toooo, can you believe that people say that this is the weakest episode of the show?
I can't.
Same for me. 1 of my favorite episodes of the year for me. From any show that is. 😊
After all the depressing shit from previous episodes, the subject about death ironically(in a great way) is presented as the most hopeful one👏
@@isaibravo3917 You're joking!? That's crazy of them. This is easily one of, if not THE best episode.
I read the comics about 30 years ago and as much as I loved the first 5 episodes my ultimate judgment of the adaptation was always going to depend on how they managed The Sound of Her Wings. And it was perfect. So sad and beautiful. I cried through most of it, honestly. And then they surprised me by putting the Hob Gadling story in the same episode and I cried again because I was so thrilled. And it was perfect too. This is my favorite episode of television that I've seen in a very long time.
I actually loved how the two stories complimented each other!
Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death absolutely did a fantastic job!
We have seen death portrayed in media as either a comedic act, or a serious one that will just obliterate you if you so much as look at Death the wrong way.
This show attempts at something that in my opinion has never ever been done before on the many portrayals of of Death and that is: Portraying Death in a kind and guiding light to the souls who passed on. And they absolutely did a great job with this idea without making cartoony or campy.
Sort of makes sense how Death could be misinterpreted as the skeletal figure when described by a very bewildered person who met her, but lived.
“So, what’s death like?”
“Um, seems to smile a lot.”
“Oh, like a skull.”
“Sure, whatever. I’m just happy to be alive.”
It's actually been done in different benign ways many times over the years.
Some intimidating but non malicious versions (comedically as you have said) are DEATH from Terry Pratchetts Discworld series (and the companion deaths like The Death of Rats). Or the version of The Seventh Seal, game-playing death in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.
But there is the chilled, friendly John Denver-type ANGEL of death in Touched by an Angel. There are others too.
But I love this one here. She's great.
The comic did it, of course, but yeah.
I also liked Death in AHS Asylum, just an old lady who would kiss you if it's time to go.
@Rick King 22 YES! The actor was so good! Loved his intro.
A beautiful death followed by a beautiful eternal friendship. Greatest contrast in this episode.
Death is actually the most popular member of the Endless among fans of The Sandman. And the reason is easy to recognize: She's the one who truly cares about the people she encounters.
I agree as an OG Sandman fan! but I also love Delirium! Dream's elder and youngest sisters are the best!
@@mikesmollin2043 No argument here
@@RichardX1 that's cuz you're a G who knows their shit
The High Cost of Living graphic novel was my first introduction to Neil Gaiman's work. Did not disappoint. -- Much different in style from Pratchett's Death, but the same... how-shall-I-call-it... meta-humanity? I was ecstatic when they collaborated on Good Omens.
I'm personally a big fan of Destruction.
Desire is canonicly more or less genderless or what we call today non-binary. Dream in the Comics often refers to them as their Sister-Brother. Depending on who looks at Desire they appear more masculin or feminin( A heterosexual guy for example will perceive Desire often as a beautiful woman). So they clearly made the perfect casting choice having an identifiying non-binary actor/ess playing Desire and then Steven perceiving them as "she" :D
I wouldn't even say genderless. They're all the genders and can appear as any of them.
Desire is actually genderfluid
This is my favorite episode of the series. I adored this, and I loved the actress who played Death and the actor who played Hob Gadling.
You probably know this by now, as I’m very late in watching this reaction and haven’t got to the end of the comments yet, but the actor playing Hob Gadling (Ferdinand Kingsley) is the son of the well-known actor Sir Ben Kingsley. 😊
@@aitchessanon4312 Whaaaaaaaaat? So cool. I didn't know that.
In the comic, the baby talked. He just said "that's all I get?" and Death says "I'm afraid so". A comic has no sound, so you create it in your mind, but how do you put it on screen, and not have it be silly, like Stewie in Family Guy, y'know? I like how they handled it here, that Death can just telepathically understand baby talk.
“You get what anybody gets , you get a lifetime.”
"No more, no less"
Neil Gaiman said when he wrote this character he wanted to ignore the traditional image of Death and instead make the Death he hoped to meet at his end. It's a beautiful idea.
Fun little factoid; the conversations in the background of the bar remain the same through each time skip. In the 80's scene, during the joke about rabbits, one of the people pipes off "not this again" as kind of a meta comment on it.
...and Hob chuckles at the joke before the punch is even told.
The Sound of Her Wings (the first part of the episode) and Men of Good Fortune (the Hob Gadling part) are two of the most popular issues from the original comic run, and they're probably my two favorite issues of the entire series. In the Hob story, you get to see that pre-imprisonment Dream was colder, more aloof, and actually much more amoral than post-imprisonment, although he was obviously never a fan of slavery.
Everything is so consistent because they've been VERY careful in retelling the storylines from the comics run. Episodes 1-5 were Preludes and Nocturnes, and which was probably the weakest part of the comic. (Which makes sense, since it was the very first seven issues.) Episodes 7-10 are from the next story, The Doll's House. By episode 11, we'll also have covered most of Dream Country.
If there's a Season 2, I expect we'll get at least one of the remaining Dream Country episodes (it was just 4 unconnected short stories, but one we haven't seen yet is VITAL for the overall story arch), plus a rather introspective, storybuilding story line (Season of Mists), and a very...odd...one (A Game of You).
i don’t think we’ll make it to a game of you in the next season. season of mists is pretty massive and neil plans on telling nada’s story there too; after all, it’s what sets everything off.
@@chance757 Thing is, that is exactly what I'd have said about The Doll's House and Season One.
@@Taliesyn42 i hear you but there’s parts of the doll’s house yet to be told too. i actually guarantee we won’t make it to the “a game of you” storyline; way too expensive to do well in one season that’s already packed.
I pray we see a S2 for Season of Mists
In the beginning, Death carried the persona we're all familiar with. Cloaked, hooded skeletal wielding a scythe. Scary. And Death grew depressed by her function, and considered quitting. Until coming across a little girl who pondered to death the problem was death did not understand what dying felt like. Now, once a century, for one day, Death gives herself a mortal life. And that's when death took on the peppy goth chick persona we all know and love. The Endless are seriously fascinating when you hit up Google and start to explore them all. Dying for Season 2.
Nikki: "Desire has short hair....Short hair is amazing"
My Dad: "My hair is so short you can't see it"
Mine, too.
Legend.
Just a quick little note, Desire is played by a non-binary actor so they/them would be the correct terminology.
Doesn't mean Nikki isn't right about women rocking short hair though. She always looks fire and anyone that makes stupid comments about the length of a woman's hair equating attractiveness should be throat punched.
Desire and Lucifer are two characters in this season that you can use any pronoun for. At least that's what I've understood from Gaiman talking about it. Totally agree with you as far as the actor.
“If you wanna cut your hair off there’s a sign to do it. Because Desire’s doing it!”
Ah, Desire. They really are the best and worst influence imaginable! 😂
This was my favorite. Easily one of the best episodes of television. Death is such an incredible character, and the story of Morpheus and Gadling is so beautiful, well written, and flows like water.
I was so scared they would screw up death but they surpassed my expectations. Her performance was sublime.
I love the interpretation of Death as a friend, a comfort
This is honestly one of the best episodes of tv of all time. The whole episode could’ve been just about Dream traveling and talking with Death while she is guiding souls to the afterlife. I mean first the scene with her guiding the old man, letting him say the Shema prayer made me tear up right away, and I’m not even Jewish. But then they show us the story of Hob Gadling and I could NOT take my eyes off the screen for a second. Also in the comic she is white and pale, but I love that they cast a black woman and that it was Kirby Howell-Babtiste, her version of death is so warm and kind and caring.
I’ve been on the side that thinks immortality for mortals is a curse, that over time your moral compass would break, you would look at other mortals as just insects, and your own sense of humanity (your soul, spirit, chi, ka, whatever you want to call it) would crumble away into dust. But Hob Gadling is a truly exceptional man for living as long as he had and not become either a power hungry psychopath or just an outright piece of crap. Yes he veered off the path and was involved briefly in the slave trade, but Morpheus managed to show him the error of his ways. Hob is the embodiment of looking at the bright side! And Hob had an effect on Morpheus because after spending so much time with Hob he actually did come to care for him. And in the end Dream finally admitted that he and Hob were friends.
Also apparently Neil Gaiman said that in the end of the episode Hob is actually grading papers because he is now a history teacher. Which is both perfect and hilarious when you think about it.
Hob is the epitome of learning from history.
"But Hob Gadling is a truly exceptional man for living as long as he had and not become either a power hungry psychopath or just an outright piece of crap." I mean, Hob did willingly participate AND directly profit off of the Atlantic Slave Trade until Dream had to warn him to stop, let's not forget.
I cried my eyes out - in fact, I still cry when I re-watch the Death parts of this episode. Her part was so moving, so sad, but somewhat encouraging! If I was in hospice I'd welcome Death for sure. The part with the baby with SIDS was so heartbreaking! This was probably my favorite episode. Loved your reviews and your takes on this!
I dont think a day has gone by since i watched this episode where I don't think about it in some way. The way Neil was able to capture and portray death in such a way left me speechless and crying plenty
Since I read the comics 30 years ago, I took to me what Dream says : " To died is as natural as born". It helped me to see some loses in my personal life as part of a natural process, where my beloveds finished their jorneys in peace.
I loveeeee this episode. Hits ya HARD in the beginning, then lightens the mood up, but makes ya think the entire time. Death + the violinist is such a fantastic scene
This and "A Hope in Hell" were my 2 favorite episodes. The contrast from the beginning of this episode, with the hit in the feels, followed by Dream and Hob Gadling, was incredible. I loved Nikki and Steven showing both "Oh, holy hell, this person died like this?" yet Death making their transition gentle, peaceful, as they said both sad and sort of beautiful at the same time. This episode was so well done.
This episode started out beautiful and somber, and then ended so beautiful and bright.
My favorite part about death is that she is so full of life.
Death is the one true reaper to whom all death gods must bow. Like Dream, she has her own realm, although it's never given an explicit name. It is, however, sometimes referred to in passing as "the Light at the End of the Tunnel."
Since people are dying constantly everywhere, she is nearly omnipresent on Earth at all times. Death's powers allow her to see spirits on Earth, and in fact, she can leave certain souls in the plane to wander as ghosts. She loves her job and does it very well and is perhaps the most well-adjusted of the Endless family.
The Sound of her Wings was the point in the comic series where many thought Neil had hit his stride and found his voice with the comic book. It ends the collected volume Preludes & Nocturnes and you'd be amazed how much of this show just lifts dialogue straight from the comic because it just works.
The nice thing I noticed in this is the scene with the baby, in the comic the baby asks "is this all I get" and they thankfully dropped the baby talking and you just heard Death's replies. For TV IU think that worked better.
The scene with the baby is so well done here. It tells so much about Death and also about how the Endless communicate with humanity.
I enjoyed this series but I felt like this episode was far and away the best of the series. I remember reading the story about Hob Gadling in college and I think about it a lot.
I loved how we get to see Dream grow emotionally, from the development of Dream & Hob's friendship to seeing humanity through Death's gentle kindness. Dream is changing and evolving and I enjoyed it so much!
Friend: What will you do with all that time?
Hob: I’ll find better friends than you.
centuries later… Dream: I’ve always heard it’s impolite to keep one’s friends waiting.
If you're enjoying this series you should check out Good Omens. Neil Gaiman is an amazing writer.
It took a long time for me to realize how important her beautiful, terrible kindness is to the story. I hope this series lasts until the moment her kindness matters.
My favorite episode of the season! Kirby Howell Baptiste is a wonderful Death, I love that she wears an ankh, I love her compassion and commitment to her duty and to humanity. I love the story of the man who lives forever and never loses his will to live despite his hardships. I love how Dream grows and as Nikki said humbles himself by growing closer to people and understanding his purpose in relation to them. One of the most memorable episodes and has interesting concepts.
Hearing her chew out Dream and then later say "Do you know who I am"...that really sold me on Kirby. She exudes the same kindness and compassion and care that the comic shows Death to have. I cry every time I watch this episode.
😊Interesting fact, Dream’s friend, Hob, is prolific actor Ben Kingsley’s son.
REALLY 🤯🤯,
Thank You for sharing! I was
trying to figure out where I'd
seen him before, thanks to you
I can stop racking my brain.
He LOOKS like somebody I've
seen before 😊😊
WHOA!!! Did not realize that.
I knew Nikki would get emotional in this episode. This was the BEST EPISODE in the series.
I think, for a lot of fans of the original material it was a real bummer that this series didn't seem to make a splash the way some shows do, especially because it was such an amazing adaptation. However seeing through the eyes of people who are new to it all, and seeing that it was just as powerful and moving as long time fans always felt it was, has been a really great experience. I hope that the show continues, but either way I am glad that more people were exposed to this amazing work one way or the other.
It's made a really good impression (topping Netflix's charts in quite a few countries) overall, and it's had some amazing press. I just hope more and more people get to experience this series.
The first part of the episode with Death is some of the best TV I've ever seen. Sad, funny, angering, hopeful... All of it fantasy yet so real.
My favorite ep.! The whole death concept on this episode was so heartbreaking but also touching.
This episode made me cry. It is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen on TV.
Every time Death takes someone you hear her wings
I love the character of Hob Gadling. Unlike most immortals, he have a zest for life despite all the hardships he had experienced.
👩🏾💻 I'm so happy y'all love the show,
I was so worried for Nikki to see
this one, I thought she would check
out when the Baby had to leave.
I love your reactions, thank you
for all your hard work. Also didn't
You guys find it interesting that
his Sister (Death) seems to always
know what Dream needs?
That's all for now, see y'all next week 🙋🏾♀️
I was so glad she sat with her emotions and just took it in.
Hob and Dream’s friendship through history is one of my favourite things in the Sandman universe. It reminds me so much of Crowley and Aziraphale’s adventures through time in Good Omens.
The thing about Hob, when he's at his lowest point, is that he knows things will get better. He's seen life at its best, and at its worst, and knows that it will eventually turn around again. As someone with bipolar, I can actually really relate to that. There's times when it takes all my effort just to force myself out of bed in the morning, and the one thing I have to hold on to is that I know that I just need to ride it out, and eventually it will all start to look up.
That said, Hob got a bit of a cheat -- not only does he not die, but he doesn't age. Who wouldn't want to live forever in the prime of their life? Look up the myth of Tithonus for someone who wasn't so lucky. Hell, I've only just entered the back end of my 40's and I'm already not as spry as I used to be.
My favorite episode, and it barely scratches how great Neil Gaiman's comic series was. I have already watched it several times now, and the feeling stays with me. I worked as a caregiver and also worked in Hospice for a time and just found this very emotional and beautiful. I really hope Netflix greenlights a second season of this amazing show.
I was waiting for you to see this episode! Because Death always seem to hit home with people and I love watching how she makes people feel and how pretty much everyone agrees that she's a friend holding your hand through an unknown moment.
Trivia: this episode closes the adaptation of "Preludes & Nocturnes", the first of ten narrative arcs from the 75 issues of the Sandman original comics. Now we move on to the second arc: "The Doll's House".
I would call this episode a bridge because (more trivia) the story with Death is reprinted in both trade paperbacks for "Preludes and Noturnes" and "The Doll's House" and Hobbs story is in middle "The Doll's House" . Neither is really central to the arcs that surround them but I enjoy them both greatly.
This series is the most comic accurate out of any. There is a mixture of one to one from the source material with creative liberty that make it such a masterpiece. I am so happy you decided to react to the Sandman. As always, another great reaction.
The way that she said “No” at 11:00 broke me.
That first part of the episode always gets me.
Love, love, LOVE that they cast a non-binary actor as Desire!
There are 7 siblings:
Dream
Death
Desire
DEspair
Delirium
Destruction
Destiny
Notice how they never call Death by her name...Dream always says my sister or sibling...but everyone else gets called by their name
I love that about Death. She just exists and all of them know her without having to call her by name.
this is my favorite episode actually. it shows death as gentle and sweet in the first part and then celebrates the beauty of life in the second. it kind of goes like "look, its not so bad to die, youll be okay; but dont forget all the things you have to live for either. so live, and have fun while you have time; and when time runs out know that you dont have to be scared."
I had been waiting for you both to see this episode. So sad…so beautiful. And I completely agree about how you described the episodes- they go together, but they’re all total different. Like each is a comic book issue!
Episode 6 was one of my favorite episodes of the season. It was well written, acted and directed! Props to the writers for connecting two different storylines into one cohesive episode.
Please when will we get episode 7? I love your reaction videos to Sandman
Nikki made it through the Death scenes in better shape than I did.
Been waiting for this one 😊
I feel like you missed the point of robert gadling. IMO Gaiman intended to effectively debunk the whole "immortality would suck" mindset. Hob LOVES life, even when he hates it. He wants to live, to keep living because there's always more to do. Sure it's sad, you watch everyone around you die, but that's kind of life even when you aren't immortal. He meets new people, makes new connections, does new things to give his life meaning and never, NEVER wants for death.
Yes and as Rob was stating in the pub before he made the declaration to never die he talks about he had survived the Black Plague, so outliving everyone he cares about probably wasn't new to him.
Dream really has looked down on humanity for a lot of his existence. I agree that Dream thought Hob would hate being alive that long and would beg for death, especially at Hob's lowest. Hob represents so much about humanity, both the flaws and the best parts. It's pretty clear even before their last meeting that Dream is much more interested in Hob than just a social experiment.
When it comes to Hob, Dream just wants to see *what* Hob does, rather than expecting something in particular or notable.
Shakespeare caught Dream’s attention because storytelling is very much his line of business, as it were (and in the comics there’s a whole subplot there!).
Short hair *is* awesome, and…soo is Mason Alexander Park as Desire. They’re bloody brilliant.
The first half of this episode makes me cry everytime but its also my favorite episode
Kirby Baptiste-Howell knocked the role of death out of the park. She's good enough that when I reread the original comic Death has her voice and rhythm. She was an amazing pick.
I love this episode cause it show the two sides of the coin, one one side you got the death bit, accepting it, for it is a gift, not a curse, on the other you have Robert a man that loves life so much he cant help but keep on livin even thorugh the darkest of times
Such a beautiful episode,a rumination on Death and then an examination of Life. Death is my favorite character in not just the Sandman but in any story ever told. She is just wonderful, although it does make it awkward when someone asks who my favorite character is.
what a stunningly sad yet beautiful episode ... i cry every time i watch it.
yessss!!! I've been so excited to see you guys watch this one :D this has got to be my favorite episode in the series so far. I think its so beautiful and meaningful to see death in this light that neil gaiman paints her in after the greusomness that was episode 5. I think i kinda speak for everyone when I say that when it's my time i can only hope for a Death as warm as Kirby Howell Baptisste to hold my hand and show me whats next. And who doesnt love the Hob story!!! its so cute while also very moving to me that Hob sees the endless possiblities of the human experience ❤ thanks again for making these videos :) i really enjoy watching along with the two of you ❤ also fun fact - Desire is actually non binary and goes by they/them :D and their short blonde hair SLAYS ahah can't wait for the upcoming reactions!!
I crumbled when the old man Harry said the Shema Yisrael 😢😢😢😢
This episode had two separate stories form the comic, but they match up beautifully here. The way that Death is here, is a bit like the Reapers in the show "Dead Like Me", which is very entertaining and bewildering as this first half was. The second half is pretty fun and interesting to see how humans still can find meaning to keep going on even when the chips are down. Great job holding back those tears, Nikki! I do like Desire's look as well. In the comics, since it was in the 1980's Desire looked like Patrick Nagel's style of drawing. You would recognize his art from Duran Duran's album cover RIO, and he often did illustrations for Playboy. When you see his art, you immediately think of the 1980's.
Hahahahha. I literally begged you guys for this ten minutes ago, and you dropped it two minutes later. Good to know you care about your subscribers! Obviously just a coincidence, but it made me feel very important. 😂
Have you guys stopped reacting to this show?
nope, just on hold... posted an update a couple weeks ago
@@NikkiStevenReact Thanks, not had a chance to watch that update video, thanks x
I love your short hair Nikki! It's perfect for you. 💖
The issue where Dream and Death walk and talk is one of the best single issue comics ever. I hope we get more Sandman and if they do make more, they make the Death miniseries too.
You always see death twice, on the day you’re born and on the day you die, that’s why the recognized her
Yeah the part with the baby messed me up.
It was even more crushing in the comic but it still worked.
@@Madagon367 Definitely,
"But... is that all there *was?* Is that all I get?"
The fact the baby was aware of what was going on and was able to question Death is what really made that last twist of the knife,
but considering the issues that can come with adapting comics to a show, they did really good.
I also liked how it was all done. The way it seemed almost causal, not just how Death acted towards it aside from the friendliness she uses to comfort them, but the way it was presented. We see something inevitable, an old man passing away. An accident, the drowning and the guy getting hit by a car while playing with friends, an act of violence the young man that was shot (I assume it was a bullet wound), a patient passing away in the hospital, an OD, and then the baby.
I found it all fitting. Death is something that just happens. We don't know when, or how. It's inevitable for all things living, it can violent, tragic and horrible. It can be tragic either in how it happens or to who, like with the baby and (I assume) SIDS. Or it can be a peaceful thing, an end to suffering and all that.
I also like how they don't seem to lurk in the shadows during the scene, she just wonders in and never seems threatening, scary or any of that. On a glance, a new friend, or an old one. She doesn't hide and never really gives anyone a reason to be afraid. It matches the personality she has, and although people are shocked that Death is there. they're not afraid of HER.
I do like the comic version as well because it matches how everyone's afraid of death, her appearance fitting the fear. A figure shrouded in darkness lurking about, stepping out of the shadows to reveal a pale form, only for her to actually be the poplar opposite of what people expect. Looking terrifying, but never acting like it.
Both are good and I can't really chose which version I like more.
I had just enough time to wonder if she was there for the baby or the mother and which would be a worse scenario. Also I think it cut away at just the right moment before the mother's reaction. I was bracing for it since we had Sam's wife reacting to seeing him being pulled out the water in the previous scene. So I was relieved to be spared hearing such a heartbreaking moment, but even still my imagination kind of filled it in anyway and just left it hanging there.
The other episode ended with one of Dream's siblings, not a sister :X
John Dee's actions affected the area around him the most.
This is my favorite episode!
One of the best episode beginning to end I’ve seen in awhile out of any show 10/10 right here.
I was waiting all day for this! I cried my eyes out at the sublime Death montage in the beginning.
Also, I think Desire is technically a they/them as they can be both sexes as it pleases them.
Yep, Desire has no gender, because Desire represents whatever you want. Some people want men, and some people want women, and some don't want sex at all so Desire is male and female and both and neither all at once.
@@paulp9274 I believe in one instance in the comics Desire appeared to someone as a pile of gold.
So glad you are enjoying this so much. 😊 For some of us it is a slight step down from the comics/graphic novels. But that bias doesn't taint *_your_* experience, and it is nice to see how it impacts you both so favorably.

¹ ─ Paraphrased from *The Sandman, **_Brief Lives._*
My favorite episode. Both the parts with death and the parts with Hob.
Every time I see Death (here and in the comic), I'm inspired. How she treats the world, treats people, her siblings...she is the most grounded and amazing person of the lot. They're the kind of person I want to be.
Just to let you know that's was one of her iconic quote that we all heard from the show "When the last living thing dies, my job will be finished. I'll put the chairs on the tables, turn out the lights and lock the universe behind me when I leave" and I love that they took that from the comics and put it in the show.
And also Death is the most powerful Endless, followed by Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destiny.
They're all so powerful that the question is almost moot, really.
Best episode so far! 👍👍
This episode is as beautiful and emotional, as ep. 5 is dark and disturbing... and both (IMO) absolutely incredible!
The sound of her wings is my favorite story in all of Sandman, and I tear up every time I see this.
Going from episode 5 to 6 was the most refreshing take.
While I get the gist of the first episode, I think there was an opportunity missed. Can you imagine if Dream's best friend for centuries, an immortal had discovered that Morpheus was being held captive by a mage? I'm trying to envision the shear wrath this man would have laid upon the mansion that imprisoned him. Could anything have stopped him? I can almost see him screaming as countless bodies lay smoldering around him. "He's My Friend" would be the answer to the ultimate, "Why?" question asked as they lay waiting for death.
I'm in my 50s so the first part really hit home. Statistically I have 25-30yrs left so the spectre of death becomes more significant. I was at my father's bedside when he passed and I was the last person in my family that saw my mother before she died so when Death did her rounds I had to pause the show for a while.
Also I laughed when Shakespeare was described as a crap playwright and was shown as a Christopher Marlowe fanboy because my renaissance drama prof pretty much thought the same thing
Ya’ll need to watch and react to Supernatural! It’s now on Disney+. Now, THEY have a Death that’s …amazing! 😏
I have always wished to live forever because above all I just want to watch and observe LIFE of humanity.
