In the comics, Alex is 'gifted' with Eternal Waking. You are in a terrible nightmare, and you wake up, and everything is ok for a minute, and then you realize you are in a nightmare more terrible than the one before, and you wake up, and everything is ok for a minute.... continuing forever
Oh hellno imagine getting a power and that's your power 💀
brutal stuff
Yeah, that messed me up the first time I read it!
Yeah I think it would have taken more time then they were willing to devote to showing how horrible a waking curse.
reminds me of itachi jutsu
The sleeping sickness epidemic really happened. Gaiman used a lot of historical facts and gave them a new meaning related to Sandman.
When?
@@prashant-bm4fp 1915-1926
They think it may have been a side effect of a polio strain. They were woken up by a clinical drug trial in the 1970's. Went to sleep as children, woke up in their sixties. There was a movie about that called "Awakenings" with Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro.
I hope we get an Emperor Norton episode!!
Yes, although them becoming long term comatose only happened in the most severe cases, most symptoms were neurological - it wasn't just 'millions of people fell asleep and didn't wake up', that part was some creative liberty by Gaiman.
There is one word that perfectly describes this as a truly great pilot episode, HYPNOTIC. Tom Sturridge has such a soothing and relaxing voice that it almost makes you want to sleep, and I mean that in a very good way.
And speaking of powerful voices, Charles Dance proving once again he is one of the best actors around. That man has so much base in his voice he can speak at normal volume and you can hear him from like 30 yards away.
I felt the same. I am always waiting to hear him speak 🤣🤣
That could be why they casted him as Dream. He IS the king of dreams so the fact that his voice makes you wanna fall asleep is even better.
Also, I would NOT mind Dream narrating my life. His voice is like a drug...and I'm addicted lol
'tom sturrifge has such a soothing and relaxing voice that it almost makes you want to sleep, and i that in a good way' bro had to explain why he/she said that because it may be taken in another way 😂😂
Sleepy sickness was a real epidemic that was first observed in 1917 and was widespread in the 20s.
And as I recall, science still doesn't understand what caused it?
Wow really!!
@@ShadowyFox_86 Not for certain but some thought it was a related to polio or a different strain.
There its a movie with Robin Willams and Robert DeNiro about it if im not mistaken, "Awakenings" i think its called, good movie
@@Neyenn what a combination of actors, I'll have to check that out
03:31 - its not that they didn't do a de-squeeze, its that its a vintage anamorphic lens. Probably from the 60's or 70's. I think they use it to justify a way to make Tom Sturridge even taller and skinnier than he already is and also the other focus abberations and artefacts from the lens really create a fantastical look to the whole series.
Random fact: Robert Pattinson & Tom Sturridge have been best friends since they were children. They went to school together in London & then both moved out to Los Angeles together early in their careers.
the sandman is definitely grown up edward cullen, lol
There have been a few instances of the sleeping sickness called Encephalitis Lethargica, esp between 1915-1926 when millions of people were infected all over the world. In the series, Sandman was captured in 1920.
Wasn't he captured in 1916? That's the year they showed at the beginning
@@damyr55 oh, my bad. I must have remembered it wrong.
This show obviously isn't for everyone but for those of us it targets its a LEGIT MASTERPIECE..just wow... perfection
After the 10th episode I feel that am in love with Tom Sturridge aka Dream... really each and every one of the actors played their role with such precious that I find it really hard to forget them.. excited for S2..
Just finished this series, it's amazing, cannot wait for season 2.
Just go and read the books
It' even better
So I was luke-warm on episode 1, mainly the music is the problem - the bird scene was the only really emotional musical score in the episode - and so that was really the only time I was fully bought in. I paused episode 2 15 min in and asked my friend who read the comics to report back to me when he finishes and tell me if I'll like it more as it goes on. What do you think - is there a "THE" episode coming up where I'll really get grabbed?
@@ColinPoole episode 5 the dinner
It's all about if you're into these kind off stories, and the story in the books are more impactful as it takes place in DC universe with JL..The Corinthian and Joanna Constantine are the main highlights, The Narrative will take a turn after Episode 6 to Make is more regular.
Tech Help is correct, the comic is at least 50% better. Not to say this is rubbish.
Yeah, the epidemic was real. Gaiman is big on examining historical events through a different lens. The encephalitis lethargica epidemic lasted from 1916-1930 and affected something like a half million people in Europe. Supposedly no one can say with an absolute certainty what caused the outbreak to this day.
It was obviously caused by Morpheus being imprisoned. 😆
@@bencracknellCA 😂
I feel the slow is intentional because he's stuck...just waiting for a *century.* Even with the condensed story, you still feel the slow march of time.
I absolutely loved the show, Tom’s acting and voice ❤️
The Sleepy Sickness was a real thing! Robert De Niro starred in a movie about a survivor of it
1:29 It’s actually meant to link to the Golden Age superhero known as the Sandman, Wesley Dodds. He wore a gas mask and put criminals to sleep with a gas gun. (The idea was that the universe sensed that there was something missing and tried to fill in the gap.)
1:36 This actor is Bill Paterson, who played a scientist in a couple episodes of Season 5 of Doctor Who, and the Tadfield Neighborhood Watch guy in Good Omens. He’s also the star of a favorite little film of mine, Comfort and Joy.
This show is amazing 👏 now I get why the graphic novel is so talked about.
Oh just wait for the rest of the show. You're in for a wild ride.
@@ShadowyFox_86 I binged it first day did not disappoint
Yes the show is amazing, and the graphic novel its even better imo
Imagine that the novel is better but this show is very, very respectful to the source material, I guess this is one of the most faithful adaptations I have ever seen...
@@FablesOutofSpace 100% agreed
Finished the series a few moments ago and you guys are IN FOR A RIDE. Legitimately one of the best CBM shows ever made.
yes, the sleepy sickness was real. the comics did exactly what you're talking about, introducing a fictional explanation for a real phenomenon
You guys are gonna love this show.. They did such a good job with the adaptation thanks to Gaiman being on board.
5:46 As soon as I saw the scene, I was reminded of the story of the 169 Syrian children in Sweden, who suddenly 'switched off', no longer showing any signs of life. They called it uppgivenhetssyndrom, the resignation syndrome. Apparently it's psychosomatic, they fell into a catatonic state or coma due to the weight of prolonged psychological fatigue. In fact, these children were all children of Syrian asylum seekers, whose residence permits were revoked or threatened to be revoked by the Swedish state, and they were most likely traumatised by the war on the Iraq-Syrian border beforehand. After months, some of the children gradually woke up and one of them said that he felt like he was inside a glass box submerged in the ocean and if he spoke, or moved, the box would break and he would drown.
Episode 6 is the most beautiful episode of the season. So beautifully portrayed death, & Hob's & Dream's friendship❤💯
The one gets me to get going is dream’s voice…the deepness the cadence…and his eyes that is almost teary everytime
So glad you are reacting to this, I binged the entire season in one sitting. I loved it.
Yes, it does tie with the crap that happened in the real world. Since Dream got imprisoned and wasn't there to take care of his realm and his duties, humanity suffered greatly. Not just because of errant dreams like The Corinthian or because of the Sleepy Sickness (which was apparently a real thing), but also because unchecked dreams caused all the major wars of the 20th century, among other things. There's a line of dialogue in the show that alludes to the fact that WWII broke out because of this a couple of decades after Dream's imprisonment.
Was so looking forward to your reaction!! I’m almost done with the season! Really excited to see your reactions!
Thanks for reacting to this! Not sure why nobody is doing reactions but I'm loving this show.
Watched the series on the weekend, could not stop myself. And I want more. It's so good. Can't wait to watch you enjoy it.
So glad you guys are reacting to this. Excellent first season. Definitely excited for whats to come :)
aww i love your guys reactions and this is one i was so excited to start!~ thank you for the lens info and all the fun knowledge about the comics!~
You're in for a treat guys ! This show is the most unique and amazing one I've experienced in a while - and the casting is just top notch ! Can't wait to see your reactions to it all
Best show Netflix has done in a while. Love the comic, love the direction… 10/10
This show is cold as hell yo 😎🥶 please continue to keep up the great work brother
I got that reference
Oh gosh! They are doing it in sequence! Love it even more!
Actually dreams first conversation in Corinthian's introduction is from the sandman overture which is the prequel volume of the story that Neil wrote later around 2013. So Neil himself being on board he actually started the show from volume #0 which was a fantastic decision.
FINALLY! someone doing a reaction to it. just marathoned it this weekend (saturday and sunday). cant wait til you get to episode 5!........heck i cant wait til you finish processing the video so i can do the full length to this one!
If you search the sandman episode 1 reaction you'll find plenty of channels watching it.
Really liked the show. Nice to see you guys, my internet friends, to react this!
Glad y’all are doing this one, this show rules
Episode 5th is just ❤️
Binged the shit out of this show. Loved it! I'm gonna check out the graphic novel now, very interesting story.
I binged this all in one sitting and I am obsessed with it. Been trying to get everyone I know into it and gonna read the comic because I need the immerse myself into that world.
great decision! this story is as loved as it is for a reason
Was waiting for your reaction😁😁
Jaby is like my mom whenever we're watching something, even if it's something we're both seeing for the first time lol. She's always asking for clarification and such and I'm like mom idk just watch the video lol.
episode 6 is the best piece of tv cinema I've ever watched
VFX artists have done exactly what we imagined when we read/heard the sandman book and audiobook.
You can watch Tom Sturridge and Eddie Redmayne togheter in the movie Like minds since years ago
To answer your question as to whether there was an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica-yes, historically there was an epidemic of such illness in the 1920s that lasted approximately 4 years. So they are kind of basing themselves on a historical event.
The one thing I find weird is, why did Jessamy wait 10 years to try to burn the house?? You would think it got that idea sooner. What did she do for 10 years? Just sit in a tree? Kinda makes no sense.
Right I was like the door was never left open in 10 years??
amazing series, hope to see the whole season you guys react to!
Episode 5 and 6 are my favorites. I cryed so hard
I was waiting for this!!!!
the audio book is AMAZING and i have been so hyped for this show and it is perfectly living up to my hype!
About historic equivalence: there was an epidemic of a sleeping sickness at the turn of the XX century in East Africa, which was caused by a fly (tsetse fly). The disease still exists. No wonder the helmet resembles the head of a fly. ;)
Is this known for certain, the cause being the fly I mean
@@JoshuaIfidi no
another audiobook fan! Yay! I LOVED it so much.
Yes, for me, since The Golden Child, Charles Dance has been one of the greatest villains in cinema.
Sandman is one of my favourite from DC
I binged watched this as soon as it came out watched all 10 episodes within a few hours. This was such a great show can't wait for S2. And I also ordered the books off Amazon.
Seeing the rest of the series. The first episode cannot be condensed even more.
I'm so glad that I'm the only one that noticed the squeeze. It pulled me out for 5 minutes before I completely forgot about it
I read the books and I just love these characters coming to life.
Can't wait to see your reaction on episode 3, 4 and 5 especially
Constantly refreshed ur channel for this that maybe u guys might watch this
I actually liked how they bridged the plotlines together nicely. Because yes it is a bit long for the first 3 chapters of the audiobook as the story is setting up the world, its characters and the overall plot. Also the graphic novel itself (which i still need to buy) is formatted as an anthology of stories spanning across multiple points in time in no specific order. Something akin to early seasons of Adventure Time. It does make the story have a dream like quality with the disjointed points in time in which the author presents the story. I feel like the show connects these major points very well and is VERY FAITHFUL to the source material, I'm am excited for the whole season.
Was waiting eagerly. Thank you!
Funny enough, Tom Sturridge made a movie with Eddie Redmayne called Murderous Intent a long time ago. Weird movie, but great acting.
Finally! you hopped on the ride
Please continue uploading your reaction videos on further episodes. The sandman is amazing 👌.
Aye Jaby lookin gooooooooood today! I absolutely adore this comic run. One of my all time favorites. i pray netflix doesntruin this too
I listened to the audio books as well. You meet Dream for the first time when he's captured so we never get to hear what The Dreaming looked like before that much.
If you do a quick search for sleeping sickness online you will find that it's a historical phenomenon. In particular, a widespread number of cases around the same time Dream was captured in the show with half a million in Europe alone and approximately the same number in the rest of the world.
I absolutely love this series!
Charles Dance in Last Action Hero is mint - also happens to be a highly "reactable" movie as it was written for movie buffs.
Yay, you're reacting to it :D
The sleeping sickness mentioned was legit and occurred around that same time period.
I love when stories tie in historic events with their fictional occurings. Somehow just feels more immersive
Just finished this and I can say Jenna Coleman as Constantine was an absolute stand out of this show she was amazing and definitely should’ve been more of a supporting character
I mean I admit there were bigger problems so Johanna couldn't have more screentime but really? only the first half? I'd rather watch constantine and dream blabber abt random stuff for an hour than see despair and desire plotting their sibling's demise
I enjoyed what was there but I feel like maybe Matthew should have suggested recruiting Joanna to help keep an eye on Rose, since as a human of similar age, they could have bonded (and maybe had a relationship 😉)
@@leiaelkins5656 that would be too typical
The reason magus died so quickly because those items were out of his possession.
I'm so happy you guys are reacting to this!! But please upload more reactions to Harlry Quinn, I loved your reactions to the first 4 episodes.
Can't wait to see what's next
I read the comics as they came out for the first 50 issues or so. I haven't reread them, but did like the audio book. This is a pretty good adaptation for television. Some things are different, some moments are lost, but they can't really spend the first three episodes dealing with Morpheus' capture and escape.
I enjoyed your reaction, and look forward to seeing how you enjoy the rest of them.
I loved this show so much
Thank you for doing reactions to The Sandman! I haven’t seen many people doing it, so I’ll be subscribing to your Patreon towatch your reactions on my rewatch! Please check out the credit sequences, which is done differently for each episode. They’re by Dave McKean, who did most of the covers of the original episode, and he came out of retirement to do them. They are so beautiful! Also, McKean directed a movie that Gaiman wrote called Mirrormask, which shares a lot of these visuals!
He had the kid get the items because he was afraid of any possible traps or repercussions from doing so and he didnt like his son so he didnt care if he died
I just finished this series, loved it!
RIP Jessamy, too pure for this world
Episode 5 is possibly the best episode in all tv shows ever made !!! Can't wait to see your reaction when you get to episode 5 it will blow your mind away episode 5 could literally be a movie itself and be the best movie ever made ever!!
5:26 "cause he's smol"
Something about that made me laugh
Funny you say Eddie Redmayne because Tom was in a movie back in 2006 with Eddie called “ Like Minds” it’s a psychological thriller movie a really good watch-Love Tom as the Sandman ❤
My first introduction to Charles Dance was his role as the villain in Last Action Hero. A 90’s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that is seriously underrated imo 😂
I started watching this series .. and I am at 6th episode.. 6th one blew my mind.. I can't wait to see your reaction guys..
I can’t wait for you to react to the ep 24/7
Breaking the seal was only pt of it, the glass was still keeping him in, that's why jesamy went for the glass
Tom's voice does sound like Eddie Redmayne lol I kept thinking he was going to say a spell, which wouldn't be surprising cause this world obviously has grimoires in it. I've also hadn't read the story before, so I'm not familiar if he ever does say spells 🤷♂️ I cant wait to have free time to watch the series! Was waiting for it to be available on netflix since I saw the trailer on youtube ❤
I bought the first two books last year so everything there its kinda fresh and i have to say this is maybe the best adaptation that Netflix has donde by far, its amazing, its really feels made by and for fans
It was indeed shot with anamorphic lenses and not corrected at the normal aspect ratio in post production
They made it on purpose to make the image look a bit surreal and the characters more slender/etheral to match with the comics' visual style
I also lived that main actors voice
Sandman what a series!!!!! Wow
Funnily enough, Tom Sturridge is Robert Pattinson’s best friend.
End credits scene has original artwork from one of the artists who worked on the comics.
WHERE'S MY HARLEY QUINN & LOVE,D3ATH,ROBOTS reaction?? 😭 Why you guys do this to us.. we've been waiting!!
I hope they don't make us wait much with The Sandman reactions. I loved the series.
I love the audio dramatization they did of Sandman, and I've absolutely loved the show so far! Glad you're enjoying it, too. There are a lot of interesting deviations from the comic, but I can't say that they're for the worse. I mean, having prominent DC characters would have been... jarring in this. And this allows Morpheus to be more... human than the comics did.
Lucienne was referring to Lucifer I think when she said an endless abandoning their responsibilities. Lucifer could be representing Desire.
