Apparently, they couldn't use John Constantine because of the rights issues and the presence of the character in other TV shows (which could collide in terms of timeline consistency), but they still used a character from the comic books - Johanna Constantine.
As for the Fates, I think that the trope of goddesses/beings that deal with fate, prophecies is present in many cultures, not only greek or roman mythologies. Well, maybe not only with fate, but the triple goddess archetype and the Maiden/Mother/Crone archetype are prominent in other religions/myths as well, like Tridevi, Wicca, Ix Chel from Mayan religion etc.

It's also a part of the effort to distance this show from the DC universe. John Constantine is a borrowed character, but Gaiman created Johanna Constantine for his series.
As for the Fates, they are similarily represented in Norse mythology as well.

The “three who are one” or maiden/mother/crone archetypes show up in a number of places, Romans and Greeks and Norse. It’s theorized this is based on the phases of the moon, and that Artemis too was a “three in one” goddess, but also there are versions with the three graces and the muses.

About the casting, imo it felt very Neil Gaiman: he loves to play with his characters, change them as time passes, in a way that is utterly natural and yet feels (for long time fans) somewhat surreal.
People, science, everything evolves and changes, and some get hung up on certain aspects of character where Neil is very, “No, that doesn’t matter; chuck it in the bin.” There is something in altering aspects of storytelling that make good myths all the more relevant.
That’s something I appreciate about Gaiman. He can let himself grow, and allow that courtesy to be extended to his characters and such.
Sandman has always been inclusive and ahead of its time in 1989 and now then even more in 2022. It was written in the 80s and was based on the various genders and sexualities Neil had around him at the time. Unsurprisingly being creative in London during that period meant you hung around with some wild characters from an array of backgrounds.
He's quoted as saying he based the story on his own life
Neil Gaiman is an expert on mythology himself, he writes a lot about it and thats why so many mythologycal names on Sandman. The first issue of the comic came out on 1989 i could see an inspiration for the name
They couldnt use John because WB said Neil could only use characters he created, and John Constantine was created by Alan Moore. The good thing its that at least JJ Abrams is developing a live action Constantine show for HBO Max! wait is JJ Abrams it isn't a good thing.
The comic has some DC characters cameos, like the Justice League and Doctor Destiny, they have actually god rid of it because of what WB said

The Cain and Abel characters were originally from DC horror comics (as Startibart Last commented). They played a role similar to the Crypt Keeper in "Tales from the Crypt", introducing and framing stories. The two comics they were featured in were "House of Mystery" and "House of Secrets", which are their homes mentioned in this show.
The two actors in the show do a great job of the portrayal of the comics characters, but there is a greater physical difference in the comics (Cain is far taller and skinnier than Abel).
They may have had to switch out John Constantine because he is a character in the WB shows.
However, they have made a number of ethnic and gender changes, as well as updated many other things to reflect the changes to society.

I mean while I'm also annoyed the constant concern with gender or race swapping, I would play devil's advocate for a moment. I think the issue is not just people's discomfort with diversity. That does play a part sometimes. But what it mostly comes down to is most fans desire to watch their favorite stories told faithfully, and faithfully to a lot of people implies the gender and race is exactly like the source material. For example, the original comic book Superman had always been Caucasian looking. And although there is Absolutely NOTHING wrong with making Superman's race Chinese or Indian, there would be many fans who would find it offensive that the character is Chinese instead of the original Caucasian. Or a better example, imagine if Black Panther was changed to a white or Asian character. While theres nothing generally wrong with creating a new interpretation of a character, there's a bit of disregard for how much that character means to people.
I think it makes sense for some people to be a bit concerned about the authentic representation of a character. That being said, as a Sandman comic fan, I'm not really that bothered by some of the changes made. It's a great story, and I think the actors really brought the characters to life ❤️

I am white but I grew up in a very diverse country, and I always witnessed this kind of diversity in the media I consumed since I was a kid, so that's probably why I find it so odd Jaby questioning it. Also, please I don't mean he is being prejudicial or disrespectful towards the actors ethnicity. It's just like they said... America is so conditioned to mostly watching white actors on screen that seeing a show this diverse is kinda chocking to them, at least at first.

Because its pointless to merely cast people because you have a checklist of "one indian, one black person, one white person".
That's not even how casting is done.
Casting for diversity LITERALLY MEANS looking at a character and going "does this character actually NEED to be this gender or ethnicity to make the story work?"
And if the answer is "no", then you invite actors of all genders or ethnicities or both to audition and you cast whoever embodies that character the best. Ideally WITHOUT the bullshit of going "oh well in the comic they look like this so we should blah blah blah".
It's nonsense to cast people coz they're the right ethnicity or gender, but have no ability to do the role.
And frankly - if anything - THE SANDMAN TV show is hands down proof that if you cast your roles based on ANYONE who can nail it , then you're gonna get a good show.
Every character who was cast diversely in this show absolutely crushed it. And that's not my opinion, that's SANDMAN being #1 in 37 countries and in the top ten in 84 countries and fans RAVING about how good the show and casting is proving without a doubt that it worked.
They didn't cast with ethnicity or gender in mind.
They cast based on letting EVERYONE have a go at a character and casting the BEST PERSON that they felt suited the role.
      That's what diverse casting is.
You're not ticking a box or filling a quota. You're saying "this character has not real defined gender or ethnicity in the story to make the story work so WHY are we trying to say only white people or only men can play the role?"
Honestly the only real reason Dream is played by a guy is because the famous and well known property is called THE SANDMAN. The rest of the Endless - its a free for all. And I'm glad that it is.
And even if i I wasn't, the show's massive success is proof that they nailed it.
Where I live, in New Zealand, Indians were ONLY cast in one role - convenience store clerk. For 40 FUCKING YEARS.
They wouldn't even give us Shakespeare roles ON STAGE, let alone any other roles on TV.
Do you think that Indians - outside of India - should ONLY PLAY convenience store clerks and Uber drivers? Because without diverse casting that's what we'd all be worth. We'd all be Apus instead of actual real three dimensional characters and people.

Did you ever notice the supernatural British Tom coincidence?
Several shows with supernatural elements had a lead played by a British actor called Tom, with a two syllable surname. Sleepy Hollow was Tom Mison. Da Vinci’s Demons was Tom Riley. Lucifer was Tom Ellis. Sandman is Tom Sturridge.
I guess that we can expect Tom Holland to be the lead in a supernatural TV show at some point

To address the story of Paul. Yes his name was Saul but he wasn't a king. King Saul was the King who reigned before King David in the Old Testament. Saul of the new testament was a jewish pharisee who like the other pharisees was trying to stamp out christianity because it was preaching that people didnt have to follow jewish law to worship God. God came to Saul, not Jesus, and made him see the truth. This meeting between God and Saul was famous for the description that Saul went temporarily went blind and then scales fell from his eyes as the truth was revealed. Saul then changed his name to Paul to distance himself from his past as a Pharisee to move forward as a Christian.

If you look up how Cain and Abel look from the comics art from the ‘80s and ‘90s, you’ll see, like Sturridge’s casting, they look really like those appearances. But I think these actors evoke more of a sense of them being Near Eastern, which is what Cain and Abel, had they existed, would be ethnically. Although even that doesn’t feel as prioritized as that the symbolism of the story the characters represent, as in, whether they were ancient Near Eastern, or white (kinda how the comics made then back then), or any other ethnicity, it’s that they’re one of the earliest stories of how brother murdered brother to possess his things.

I love the casting changes that they've made in the show. It's so striking to see the differences. Coming up, there's a nightmare that had been two separate nightmares in the comics, but they were combined into one and made a woman who has _infinitely_ more character than her comic book counterparts. But yeah, I legitimately appreciate the excision of all of the DC comic references, because I really feel that, at the end of the day, they would have been distracting. They were just fine in the comics, but in a show like this, it would pull the attention away from the things that Gaiman is trying to communicate in the story. I mean, how _jarring_ would it be to just... run into the Martian Man Hunter in the real world? That would set the waking world as a very deliberately fantasy world, which just doesn't quite fit with the vibe of the story. A sense of "Well, if _this_ guy is around, why shouldn't we expect just... _anything_ to happen?"
As for The Corinthian's name, there's apparently a lot that goes into it. 17th Century slang for a "licentious rake," the biblical reference to the city of Corinth having a decadent culture, and let's not forget the "fine Corinthian leather" from the old car ads. It's basically to build him up as cool and charismatic, but spoiled.

I've noticed that it was a bit confusing to have John replaced with Johanna, being Johanna already someone in the past, played by the same actress. I've seen a few reactions to this series and in the episode where victorian era Johanna appear people sometimes go "wait, it's the same character? Why did she not recognize him in the present?" (usually people who didn't read the comics so they aren't familiar with the story)
If it's true that they couldn't use John because of copyright issues they could have just made a new character. Idk... "Mark Constantine". If they were going to copy/paste John's story into another character at least don't make it confusing, make two different characters be different.
