      My theory is that what kills hope is Despair, and Lucifer seems to know the answer while looking unable to reply, because becoming Despair would either make it a paradox or (since Lucifer biggest sin is known to be pride and vanity) making it unbeareable for the Lightbringer to become Despair, as Despair appears later to be the contrary of what Lucifer would call beautiful

      Despair only equals hope, that move would have been a stalemate. There are many ways to lose the Oldest Game, and one of them is lack of imagination. Lucifer's mythology is confusing but very interesting.
    Originally, Satan, the Devil, the snake in the garden, and the first fallen angel, a Watcher called Azazel were all separate and very distinct entities. When Christianity became a thing, Azazel's mythology being very similar to that of the greek god Phosphorus was absorbed with it. Phosphorous was the morning star aka the light bringer. Phosphorus translated to Latin then to English, gives us “Lucifer”. as such phosphorus's mythology was absorbed into that of Azazel. the Azazel name got less popular and then all demon-like similar characters were also absorbed. so Satan=devil=scapegoat azazel=Lucifer.
    Azazel was originally chained under the earth in Sheol. But later when he became Lucifer he isn't just imprisoned there he now rules Sheol, which was now called Hell after the Norse goddess of the underworld Hel. The Greek god of the underworld Hades was also used as the name for Hell from time to time.
    What's interesting is that DC comics separated Lucifer and Azazel. Azazel became the first of the fallen (his name didn't transfer). which is historically true. and Lucifer became associated more with Samael. (only because he challenges god in the bible)
    Edit: also Angels are supposed to be male like God is male. in Catholic mythology. They are however represented as androgynous in multiple fictional stories

      Its interesting you say Angel's are always male, if you actually read the ancient biblical writings and read up on the Jewish theology which eventually made up the old testament and also the gnostic texts you would see that many Angel's are actually utterly bizarre creatures depicted as amalgamations of various animals birds and even some represented by inanimate objects such as burning wheels spitting fire and lightning.
      Some Angel's are depicted as having up to four faces with limbs of metal and flesh and the visage of both humans and animals and some are strange fiery balls of eyes with multiple wings.

      The origin of Lucifer in the christian tradition is not entirely clear though, the Morningstar is a babylonian and jewish concept originally where Helel (Babylon), the Morningstar, tries to outshine the sun (Israel) but is cast down for his hubris, every day. It's deeply connected to the relationship between Israel and Babylon who share a violent history. The concept of Lucifer wasn't evil in itself, there is even early christians that were baptized Lucifer until some interpreted the story of the King of Babylon in the bible as a fallen Angel and therefore as Satan, only then became Lucifer = devil.
      It's all very confusing stuff and nothing is really clear because early christianity is an amalgamtion of Jewdom, mesopotamic paganism, greek/roman mythology and germanic mythology.

    • @eingoluq
      @eingoluq 2 года назад +1

      @@DieGoetterdaemmerung oh no it is very clear. The Babylonians (Babel, not Helel) were the first and best true astronomers in history. They were the first to noice the wandering stars, aka seven classical planets. These seven planets influenced the invention of the seven day week. They also noticed that one of those planets, Venus would rise before the sun sometimes of the year (morning star) or rise then set early in the night (evening star). As the morning star, it seemed like Venus was trying to take the place of the sun but was outshone by the sun. Then as the evening star it would only rise a third of the way up in the sky before setting prematurely. This influenced a Babylonian myth where one god tried to take the place of another before being cast out of heaven, sometimes with a 1/3 of the heavenly beings who helped him.
      When the Israelites were enslaved by the Babylonians. They learned of and adopted not only the seven day week into their mythology they also learned the concept of the morning star. It also spread through other parts of the world including Greece. In Hebrew mythology the angel Azazel was created as a direct result of the Babylonian myth. In Greece the god Phosphorus was created. During Christianity the similarities between the too was too much to ignore and this the Greek god Phosphorus (Lucifer) was Syncretized with the watcher Angel morning star proxy in Hebrew mythology, Azazel.
      Some time after the Babylonian captivity and before the invention of Lucifer, the Israelites did start referring to Babylon as a morning star in a sense. Because of how powerful it once was then collapsing, thus demonizing The entire culture till this day.

    What you have to remember, Achara is that you listened to an audio book and had certain pictures in your head but this was a Comic book/Graphic novel and those images exist. Mazikeen, the "pretty demon " looks almost identical to the comic version.
    This isn't something they could just choose to interpret their own way when there were actual comic panels to recreate that fans have been dying to see for over 30 years.

    There are many theory regarding hope thing. Many believe that it's whether Lucifer can't bring themselve to kill it cuz, they still hope to be free from God influence and return. So to kill hope mean kill the very thing that keep them going. Some said to kill hope was despair and that is the domain of Dream sister, and we knew that dream stronger than her, or despair can only tie against hope so they can't beat it. And some like you said nothing can kill hope, or Lucifer can't really conjure any comcept that can kill hope and many more.

    The writers did their research really well. In real life the only person to defeat Lucifer in hell and made a spectacle of him was Jesus, when he descended into hell to take the keys of permanent death. Very important messages in this and one thing for sure hell and heaven are real and death is not the end.

    I love this episode, it is my favorite out of all episodes following episode 6 :)
    I agree with @Cobbsta comment that the whole idea is not so much as just that you cannot kill hope, I believe there is a double meaning behind it all.
    It is close to what @Charles Barrientos said in his comment about Lucifer holding onto hope of one day returning to heaven, but lets not forget that while they battle and transform/conjure they feel whatever the other conjures so when Dream said he is hope he made Lucifer feel that hope, making it so much harder to try and best Dream since you cannot kill hope nor Lucifer wanted to do it in that moment. Also that hope that Lucifer now felt even more feeds into the dream of returning to heaven, thus the sad and painful expression on Lucifers face later on. I would even go deeper to say that without the dream of heaven Lucifer would not have hope and vice versa without hope Lucifer would not dream of heaven. So in that moment I felt like Dream is slightly threatening Lucifer by saying he can take away that dream.

  • @calebtoles3819

    In the DC universe, at least two things can "kill" hope, one is The Creator (which is the equivalent of God) and Despair (which is Morpheus's sister). The thing is, and why she is so annoyed with it, is that Lucifer herself hopes to dethrone God from heaven, so her reaction is not about the bitter taste of having no answer for it, but the annoyance of not being able to say it since it would kill her own dream.

    Dream realized he could never beat Lucifer by attacking, the opponent experiences the blow of whatever you come up with and Lucifer could basically survive anything. Plus Lucifer really is the Beast of Judgment in DC. Also taking the form of a supernova was a great nod to Lucifer's role as the Lightbringer.
    Dream's whole plan was to bait Lucifer into that exact ending. Firstly, it makes Lucifer experience hope, but also having hope in the face of the worst Lucifer could bring means there are no more moves. The funny thing is, the easy answer is "I am despair" but when we meet Despair of the Endless later, she actually defines hope just as Death defines life and Dream defines reality. There was no move left, at least not one Lucifer could/would see.

  • @PrinceLeigh
    @PrinceLeigh 2 года назад +1

    Dude you completely missed the point of the battle between Lucifer and Dream!! It was a conceptual battle between entities/deities/immortals that are beyond the definition of being gods. As it was stated in the beginning of this series by Corinthian I think it was who said: *THE ENDLESS* are beyond gods, they are the very idea & embodiment of those aspects in which they portray. If you look at the DCU Multiverse Map, you'll see that *THE ENDLESS* are right in line with beings like Lucifer but that doesn't make entities like Lucifer superior. Because although Heaven, Hell, New Genesis, Apokolips are in the same realm, the lore of *THE ENDLESS* says they exist beyond time and space. Dream actually has two realms: _Dream & Nightmare_ and if you look at the very top of the map, the one who controls everything, who is everything, who has created everything, who knows everything, who is above everything and everyone is an *_ENDLESS:.....DESTINY!!_* This video on who *_THE ENDLESS_* are will help enlighten you: ruclips.net/video/5ATxT1MUZE8/видео.html
    Think of it like this, even the gods like Zeus, Ra, Odin etc. all have dreams, all of them have desires & despair, even with their extended life span....eventually they die. *The Endless* are the very personification of those concepts, they are beyond anything that limits their abilities. They are all encompassing, they are the beginning but have no end. Now regarding Lucifer, this is where the show kind of gets it wrong, which Neil Gaiman should have stepped in and said "hold on, wait a minute that's not correct". In this episode the show writers have Dream tell us that Lucifer is far more powerful than he is, which is if *THE ENDLESS* are the personification of these concepts than they should be far more powerful than Lucifer, who was banished from Heaven by God who is far more powerful than Lucifer but in the DCU God is not the all powerful. So you see where I'm going with this? Can you imagine if these two beings actually fought a hand to hand battle with powers included? Just like Goku & Lord Beerus in *Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods* as they began to fight with all their power the entire universe begins to feel the effects of said fight. So as described by the demon Corazon at: 8:39 the battle in which they partake is the oldest of games/contests, it consist of: _skill, confidence & transformation_ I believe this contest was created eons & eons ago by *The Endless* and other deities so that if a battle did ensue, they wouldn't take the whole damn universe down with them. And you saw in this episode which is not depicted in this edited reaction, Lucifer sets the meter of the _game/contest/battle._ Meaning he/she tells his/her opponent what he/she is and gives two descriptions of what that thing is. For instance Lucifer says they are: *_A SERPANT: Horse-Biting, Poison-Toothed,_* then Lucifer retorts with: *_I AM A BIRD OF PREY: Snake-Devouring, Talons-Ripping!_* Get it? Lucifer could have started out given more than 2 descriptions, but I think the meter of 2 descriptions is just enough to keep us on the edge of our seats to try and guess what could have been added and also to see what can trump the others blow. This was by far my favorite episode.
    So, please look at the video I shared in this comment regarding *THE ENDLESS* the guy in it does a wonderful job depicting who they are. ruclips.net/video/5ATxT1MUZE8/видео.html

    20:21 - the single most consistent aspect of the Netflix Adaptation is that they've stripped basically 99% of the comics horror content out COMPLETELY; probably to ensure that the show has broader appeal.
    A great deal of the comics original horror content DID survive into the audio play.
    I don't think losing the horror content hurts the show, but it is definitely a missing component and that they've toned it all done to be something that's more in the vein of "dark fantasy" with splashes of violence certainly makes the show a very different beast.

    • @ShadowyFox_86
      @ShadowyFox_86 Год назад

      Gaiman actually has addressed the reduction in graphic horror of the show. The short version is he felt he'd been heavy handed in the comics with it and had he written it now, a lot of the comics would be closer to this. There's still plenty of horror, just not as much gore (which gets gratuitous after a point).
