Title suggestion "The Sailors Way". As a former sailor, I can tell you the ocean is a cruel mistress. Sailors both love and fear her and I think your song does a fair job capturing some of that.

Ahoy mateys, just wanted to share a demo of a sea shanty I wrote recently. This was inspired by some footage of the ocean I saw floating around on TikTok which evoked the mysteries of the briny deep, and I couldn't resist adding to the already long and lush list of sea shanties out there. Incidentally, I started writing this song a few days before the passing of Gordon Lightfoot (a songwriting master famous for his own shipwreck song) so now seems like an extra good time to share this in honor of his memory. I hope you enjoy it! [And too bad about the phone, but that's what I get for being a doofus 🤪] Yo ho ho, that's all for now ye landlubbers. I'm off to get some grog! --Reina

A new sea shanty! Beautiful! A classic. Sailors will be singing it for the next hundred years. From someone who's been sailing the oceans for for 50 years: you've captured the spirit like an Old Salt! Purely authentic, all the way to invoking the storm tactics and required confidence of facing the sea's challenge. If you can, please post that as a standalone so I can play it on my sailboat as I voyage the Pacific.

  • @xocasgv
    @xocasgv 2 месяца назад +39

You should call the shanty "Marusía." It's a Galician word meaning a rough sea but also the smell of that ocean. Galicia in NW Spain is known for its rough seas and seasoned sailors. That's the word that came to mind when I saw the initial video. I absolutely loved it.

We Canadians find the songs of the sea fun to sing. You mentioned Lightfoot’s Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. And there’s lots by Stan Rogers. Can’t wait to stamp our feet to Barret’s Privateers and the Mary Ellen Carter. Or even the song that should be our national anthem, Northwest Passage. Thanks for adding another shanty that we can use when we raise a voice or a jar. :)

Yes, RdC should definitely plan to cover some songs from Stan Rogers, especially "Barrett's Privateers" and "Witch Of Westmoreland" (which Stan covered from his pal Archie Fisher, but made his own)! "Maryellen Carter" could be a great addition, too!

Maybe you can answer a question for me then. In the musical (Come From Away) about the passengers stranded in Gander, Newfoundland after 9/11, did they base the song that sounds like a sea shanty in the bar scene on an actual shanty and, if so, what is the title? I can't find any mention of it in the program notes I've seen but they also don't mention the religious songs sampled in another piece and I know they did it there because I recognized the song from my own religious tradition.

Or "The Souls of the Sunken" which evokes those calling from below and those heading there! PS: Have you all seen the movie based on a true story of Cornish singing fishermen, "Fishermen's Friends?" Top folk album of all time - last I heard.
Fantastic song, Elle and Toni - lyrics, singing, set up - and the phone going to the briny depths - all awesome! ...❤...

Very nice. I had the same with the first spring sunlight coming through my window. I wrote then a very little sweet good morning song. So I know what you mean and no. You're not an idiot. Stop doing that. You should be very proud of yourself and everything you've achieved and everything you still work to achieve. Cheers

Wow, I love sea shanties and this song is just incredible. Well done! There is magic in those lyrics, the melody is haunting and now lives in my head, and the scenery mixed with your siren song voice is sheer enjoyment. Thank you for this. I will be saving and re-watching this video over and over again, I love this song!

I have a hard time getting through most videos these days that are filled with jump cuts, animations and CCs everywhere. Yet something made me click on your video and the second you started singing I was immediately captivated. It's not often that happens for me. By the end of the first playthrough I was singing along with not only the chorus but the rest as well.
It had my on the edge of my seat the entire time even knowing what you told us would happen! Those last few seconds felt like ages waiting for it to happen! Sorry to hear that it did, but if that was the price for this beauty of a sea shanty to exist, it was worth it in my opinion!
    Well done!

Really like that, Reina. The sound of the waves really added to the atmosphere. But, despite your intro I still spent the whole video worried that a big wave was going to soak you! 🙂

Great eerie song. My late father Robert wrote a song called "Montauk" which was covered beautifully twice by Kevin R Miles on piano, and The Lamb right before he died January 2023. My father was an artist, poet, song writer. I have links for his paintings, songs, obituary, and an article the Montauk Library did about him for Throwback Thursday called "The Fisherman" in the descriptions of my videos since our family did Amazing Grace in January to honor him. 🎹

Just as the first chorus started, my eyes involuntary widened.
As the third verse was half through, I got chills.
And by the last chorus, there was a watering in my eyes for the sailors never to be found.
Your piece evokes feelings, which evolve as it goes, and that is just about the greatest thing to hope for with a work of music. Cheers!👏

I just listened to your sea shanty today 4/17/24 it just showed up on my RUclips feed. Anyway I loved it! I didn’t realize you posted it over a year ago so you probably already have a title for it, but in case you don’t it could be “lost sailors boast or lamest fast words “ keep writing and singing you always bring a smile to this old dogs face!

This song is amazing! As I listened to it, I could easily imagine 18th century sailors with flagons of ale singing this song in an Irish seaside pub and stomping their boot- clad feet on the hardwood floor in time to the music. Brilliantly done!
