8 Ideas for IMPROVING a Bandsaw

  • If you have similar or smaller machines bought from a harbor freight or home depot, then you can easily improve your machines
A band saw is a great tool, but to be able to use it with more pleasure I decided to improve it.
I have been collecting ideas for improvement for a long time. The most important for me was to raise the machine, add rotary wheels and extend the vice. From the moment I bought it, I knew that I would have to take care of it, but I also knew that over time there would be more problems that I would have to solve, so I delayed it almost a year.
Now the band saw meets all my expectations and I think I will be very happy with these improvements.
I made the base from 2 mm sheet. This is sufficient thickness.
The wheels are 10 cm / 2.5 in diameter and each can withstand a weight of 80 kg, together 240 kg, so there is some reserve.
I bought the lamp online. It was expensive but gives very good and bright light. Thanks to 24V connection it is safe for my health and life.
If you need more information, write a question in the comment, I will try to write back.

What a great set of mods. I'm going to get started on mine. I've had all of those problems: clamping short stock, vice extension for longer stock, tiny vice for tiny parts, turning it into a quick vertical saw. What a great list. Thank-you!!

That is a whole new level of awesome - you built a monster out of a normal bandsaw. Respect, man!

Not only the lathe can reproduce itself, the band saw is even close to it!
    :-)
Great mod on the saw vice, didn´t expect that a simple addition of a threaded rod could improve that clamping so much!
    Thx for the vid!
    :-D

Still cant understand the wisdom behind how that rod helps... :((

    • @Anthsv8
      @Anthsv8 3 года назад

@@kaieteurcanada the vice only grips on one side of the vice because the piece of steel is too short to reach the pivot point of the vice jaw.
The threaded rod acts like a longer piece of steel against the fixed jaw holding pressure against the shot piece of steel to be cut

You make me so glad I watch every one of your videos. You really should consider an assortment of Oetiker crimp hose clamps; we used to use the old screw hose clamps and needed to upgrade for higher pressure and plastic barbs. When we got the clamps and a tool we were amazed how much better it's been.

Excellent. When buying these new generation cheap but fit for propose machines there is always the finer details missing or things not as we would like. What you are showing us here is ..."do something about it". What you have inspired me to do is get in and solve/do something about it on my lathe and mill.
The next thing I guess is make a video of some of these mods I have made. Now that is quite a "next step"
Thank you again from down under.

Man, I totally did that with my Harbor Freight model. Made a roll around base with the swivel wheels that come on HF engine hoist, so it was raised up to a comfortable height and rolled around on sturdy wheels. But I also had to square up the lower blade guide surface where the table mounts in the Vert. position. Yes, adjusting the vise/clamp is necessary as well.

Awesome modifications. We bought a used 7x12 horizontal band saw. It had flimsy sheet metal legs, one of which got bent when we were loading it. We made some 10 ga legs which held it up higher and put locking casters under it. Made it much better and more portable. I will have to look to see if I can put a bigger guard on it to have a bigger table if we use it as a vertical band saw.
