Happy Landings! Fly outside the box. 📦✈
If you think the slow ultra stick should be renamed to the ultra slow stick, too, give this comment a like. 👍
You may have noticed our reviews are changing a bit. Our goal is to not rush out a review without having owned an airframe for a considerable length of time. This is to ensure that our community gets a real look at what it’s like owning an airframe, not just how it is fresh out of the box after a few flights. As a result, this review might feel complaint heavy. The reality is, we’re simply trying to be thorough. We really do enjoy and recommend the Slow Ultra Stick…or Ultra Slow Stick? 📦✈
I HAVE BEEN calling it the "Ultra Slow Stick". Idk what horizon is up to, but if your PARTICULAR to a SPECIFIC type of wing design, they have been releasing ALOT of intriguing products the past few months.... I was broke enough, so if anyone sends anything, fly it right into my mailbox please. Been with horizon for a WHILE, and have even had warranty coverage issues lately, and they were THE BEST for service up until the recent changes IMHO. Traxxas has this rep. For being kinda odd, yet they sent my son a Xmaxx motor and APOLOGIZED with a hand written letter in regards to a Xmaxx situation, well OUT of warranty and likely a one off manufacturing defect on a moto shaft, paired with back-ordered parts. We have seen flights, and nothing against anyone's else, but we wanna see what it would like like in OUR HANDS. Thats where your content comes in! Another awesome vid. Stop reading my mind, and I think you bounced one too many in this time, lol. Best regards, AARC.
'complaint heavy" should be considered as 'pure, honest, owners review".
Wich is better than just another low key sponsored video that are abundant.
I mainly fly diy quads and stopped flying fixed wings I tried for maybe one summer.
Your channel is actually worth watching and a great way to get in to the how and why.
I started out with a 3d printed airplane (modelA) and naturally bought a FMS super easy V4 that is now awaiting FPV.
Having watched A LOT of your videos made it clear a high wing bush plane is my way to go lol.
Great job THP.
I'm sooo sick of those other 'reviewers' where all they say how amazing their free plane is (you all know the ones I mean).
You pay for what it can do, not what it is. Almost no other airplanes have this power to weight ratio and they cost plenty. It can takeoff and land on such a small space.
Could you guys please link the suggested low bounce wheels please? :)
I love these videos, the only problem ive run into with this channel is that due to the short time the channel has been around there isnt enough content. I watched all the videos on this channel. ❤❤❤
Thanks for the support!
@TailHeavyProductions
I'm a big fan and got into rc planes from you
@@TailHeavyProductions
I'm a big fan
I loved my GWS Slow Stick so much! It was my first successful attempt at flying RC. I had a couple other brushed, NiMH planes that I tried to get into the air, but the Slow Stick was the first one that was forgiving enough to fly with all of the disadvantages: Brushed, NiMH, and my meager build, setup, and flying skills at that time. Once I put a Tower Pro brushless outrunner and a LiPo battery on it, I was hooked on RC planes. I got a Parkzone T-28 not long after that I have hundreds of flights on, and I still take it out of retirement from time to time.
Considering that the GWS Slow Stick is a little hard to pick up these days, this fits the bill nicely. There's something special about these stick frame planes, they are just so easy and carefree to fly. I wish they would sell it as a kit though! Building my old Slow Stick was a really cool, formative experience.
Figuring they wouldn't be around forever, I bought a total of six GWS Slow Stick glider kits ($18 to $25). They're like gold to me now! Just add a Blue Wonder, a small Lipo, a receiver, and an ESC.
You guys turned me on to this plane, yours and two brothers videos sold me on it
...grateful I love this plane
Thank you for this latest dose of aeronautical competence. It's such a relief to find them during a web surfing adventure through swarms of 'thingies', 'front wheels', 'main wings' and 'downwind stalls'. Please keep them coming!
Horizon hobby should finally start listening more to the community. Thanks to you, they get more pressure! I love watching such a big corporation get more pressure thanks to intelligent people with a good spirit who are willing to put a lot of work into an good honest rc channel.
Thank you! Means a lot.
@@TailHeavyProductionshi I’m new to this
I bought one of these partly based on your review. Flew it for the first time today (March 2024). Such a good "all rounder" plane. Slow and forgiving - just stooge around the sky. OR - you can choose to wring its neck - and it's fine with that too! Recommended!
Can you guys provide a link to the replacement tires you like?
Another fantastic video! Commentary is spot on as always. Horizon should appreciate your honesty and send you guys planes to review. It’s actually refreshing and I saw this as a very positive review. RC pilots with real flight experience can give some great seat of the pants advice. Keep up the awesome job! 👍🏻👍🏻
Honesty is something horizon doesn’t believe in 😂
Thank you!
This plane is rapidly becoming my favorite park flyer. I have snapped landing gear, but I'd rather that than something that keeps me out of the air. Im absolutely doing the flaperon mod as soon as servos are available.
I maidened mine yesterday. Very fun plane but yes, had to order some landing gear. Found some jumbo bamboo skewers to try until the carbon fiber gear arrives.
The joke about Phillips was funny! (and true) Your drone footage from sunset was amazing.
Get some square cf tubes, some pianowire that fit inside. Cut a 1" piece of wire, bend in the middle, glue in. Cut cf tube to size. Presto, new landing gear once you put the wheels on.
For those who are thinking of buying this awesome plane.
They improved the landing gears and I have made some really hard landings.
They bounce and hold up really great.
This is the best plane I owned so far.
Also, reverse thrust is a must, since it keeps rolling :)
My first flight was with a 2200mAh. Way too nose heavy. I was amazed that even a 1300 all the way back, although much better, was still nose heavy. I'll be swapping the ESC position for sure. I broke my landing gear on the first flight, but it wasn't on the ground. I tapped a light pole. LOL I think getting the CG back like you did will be easier on the landing gear when landing though.
With every video, your quality level steps up soo much to the last one! So nice to see, awesome video!
I've been waiting all week for this.
This is the ultimate bush plane, and those who object are those who still have a radio for every plane they own.
😤
I like my bush planes to not be a glorified stripper pole personally
LOL! I entered this hobby in the late 1970's so I have LOTS of radios!
I have to admit, with the invention of computer radios, it doesn't make sense to own a transmitter for every single plane, it's a waste of money these days. The majority of my radios are older ones on 72Mhz and they all need new battery packs. I'll probably throw them away whenever I get around to replacing the servos and receivers.
Funny comment...
Never had the pleasure of having an a.m. radio did you?
I remember in 2005 I was the first person with a Spektrum 2.4ghz DX6 radio at our flying field. The old timers were still afraid to fly when I was flying and they made me make a pin for the board that said 2.4ghz. They said they would never trust that technology. They still tried to blame me for their crashes. It took a couple years before they switched. lol
Thanks for another great review. Love the fact you guys always keep it real in a fun way and don’t suck up to HH for free stuff like every other RC YT channel. Keep up the good work.
I love watching your reviews on new planes. They are put together so well!
I swapped the battery placement with the esc. Was really nervous but after a couple of flights I am soooooo glad I did. Thank you for the idea!
More proof that RC plane CG's on most fun fly airplanes are much more forgiving and nose heavy by default than folks realize. Glad you like it!
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave??? Best channel on YT.
The intro is the reason we love you guys
Fun vid. I love my SUS. Don’t let the landing gear thing scare you. You gotta really screw up a landing to break them. I’ve broken a few doing FPV landings uphill into tall weeds, where I would expect most planes’ landing gear to break. The good part is it just snaps off and doesn’t destroy the bottom of the fuselage like so may other planes. And it’s able to swap out in seconds with no tools. And replacements are cheap. I do lots of touch and goes and high speed taxi when I’m on a proper grass runway and even my road, LOS and FPV, and less than great landings with no problem. It only breaks on the real “oof” ones.
It’s much heavier than the stock GwS slow stick, but after you mod the GWS to have ailerons and more sturdy landing gear and moderate battery and all that, it’s nearly this heavy anyway.
Lol Brian Phillips does go into great depth on reviewing boxes :). I listen to RUclips at work so I appreciate the really long reviews
You almost, kinda made me possibly think about buying a plane that I normally wouldn't piss on if it was on fire. They really should consider sending you free airplanes. This kind of backhanded review is so refreshing compared to the usual sycophantic reviewers gushing over their free plane.
Always impressed by your flying! Dope music in the right spots. Cheers to warmer weather!
Why is it so expensive when it's so basic and simple? Seems extemely over priced for what it is.
Because Horizon.
It's $430 in Australia, how does that make any sense? 🤔
@@AussieRCPlayground That's a crazy price for that RC model in AU and yes I agree about "Horizon" 😖
I would just buy a big glider and some carbon rods with servos your looking at probably $50 aud
Why is a premade sandwich at the store 8 dollars ? And tastes like crap. ?
$200 US for a 1.2M 4 channel BNF with stabilization including the motor and ESC? Call me Mr. Moneybags but that doesn't sound crazy from a US name brand.
Another great video boys Thankyou! I just got back into the hobby after a 20yr break. I had a nitro trainer as a kid but it just wasn’t feasible logistically to get to the field and fly the damn thing. I never learned to fly it. I bought the ultra stick recently as a leap of faith and it has been awesome, it’s the park flyer I wanted as a kid but technology wasn’t quite there at my price point. It really is an awesome plane and I am having a lot of fun doing bush style flying. It’s made me comfortable enough to dust off my old hobbico nitro trainer and see what it can really do. Again awesome channel!
Ordered mine in May, based on early July ETA. Just got a reply to my inquiry… NEW ETA PUSHED BACK TO FEBRUARY 2024 !!!!! Grrrrrrr
Dang, that's frustrating! Supply chain issues eh...
I've been in this hobby since 2001. When I started almost everything I had exclusively came from Horizon Hobby. Now I go out of my way to make sure that I'm not buying anything from them.
Great review and spot on about the SUS 1.2m! A buddy recently bought one and I got to test fly it. With the SAFE turned off, it was fun to play with. In his case, he needs the SAFE because he is dealing with recovering from a stroke. His very first landing wasn't perfect, but it wasn't that bad either. Just as shown in the video, one of the landing gear legs snapped off. Stronger gear legs would prevent that, but it might end up breaking the wing mount piece instead. So he replaced it with a stock gear.
I live this channel and I just looked to see what's new and you happened to post a video about the plane I just bought yesterday. Thank you.
Thank you! Hope you enjoy your Stick 👍
i bought some sqaure aluminum tubing a size bigger than the landing gear and cut it to fit from the wheel base to just above the plastic after the two gear pieces meet and it no longer breaks
Where did you find the square aluminum tubing at?
that brian philips joke had me 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Broke my gear with a greased landing . I added some struts going from wheel to about where the servos go on the wing. Plus found carbon tubes that are hollow and put metal wire inside. Tough as heck.
the poem is beautiful. spot on.
Congrats on 20k guys! Can’t wait to see you hit the next milestone! Been here since 5k haha
That's your best comedic start yet! (IMO). The unboxing jokes had me on the floor. Keep it up, I love the honesty and the humor in your videos. BTW, Brian P is great, but damn that was funny.
I'm a little confused on irony or not.. If like me you were almost putting this in your basket, but got a little put off by some of the things like gear and receiver - what backyard stick-like pnp would you much rather have? The budget would increase by reusing receiver ... ? Thank you for sharing this.
Thank god for another channel using the red arrow and big yellow letters in the thumbnail.
It had been almost 4 video thumbnails since I'd seen that.
I don't want to break the red-arrow tradition being overused on every channel since 2001.
Don't fix what ain't broke!
2003 and GWS brings out the SlowStik as a larger, more wind capable platform the PicoStik pioneeered. One of my local hobbyist buddies had established a name for himself on RCGroups forum ( The EZone back then..) for all of the mods he made of this kit, first brushless conversions, twin motors, biplanes, triplanes, canards, AP platform, ailerons and pitcherons, flaps, 8 IPS drives, 4 CD-ROM kit motors. He'd go into the hobby shop and come home with 4 SS kits. When Balsa Products brought out their $18 BP-21Y brushless motor it was the perfect upgrade for GWS's short lived EPS300 and EPS350 can motor geardrives.
Someone needs to bring back the original Slow Stick, these ARF wannabes are pale comparisons.
Well, now this might be my next plane after I move. Nice video!
That thing is bad ass! Did ya ever find a fix for the landing gear?
ordered one last night. You had me at wing cube loading...
Tape a piece of foam/cardboard to the vertical stabilizer (extending it) and see if it will knife edge. Bracing it properly, etc.
Oh man, amazing quality rc video.
I happened to leave a negative comment about this model on another channel and the creator blew up on me making himself look like a fool😒 thank you for the honest review 👍
Sorry to hear that happened. We can assure you that you won't see us arguing with people in our comment sections. It isn't worth the energy - and as you said, it wouldn't be a good look for us. Better to take the high road. Thanks for the support!
Great video! Truth can either hurt u or make your stronger! Love the videos! Keep up the good work🙌
Cool plane id still like to see and hear a review with your thoughts the funcub ng please as its the only plane i have flown keep up the great work
I have the big aeroscout. The front wheel servo jams so much.
I have so many GWS slow sticks still left I’ll never need an impostor, especially for something that costs THAT much.
I’ve NEVER broken landing gear or wing mounts on the OG slow sticks. They’re MUCH lighter and I can build one RTF from the box in an hour.
9:00 tired of my Eratix giving me false alarms. Thanks for this little gem.
very fun vid on a simple rc object. a-framing the landing gear legs with another length of cf rod would
fix the breakage tendencies. very entertaining production.
Can you please tell me what cf rod is and where to find it.
Hi. I plan on buying just one more model that I can get the most out of it. I have the aeroscout and can t decide if I should get a apprentice stol or slow ultra stick UMX? Both are very good…
I agree with your review definitely but spare landing gear. I will try the battery esc switch
What about doing the carbon fiber landing gear tou used for the bushplane conversion?
Another awesome video. Thankyou. Always get a good laugh.
Switch places with the battery and ESC (1800-2200 lipo under the wing) - flight will be SUBSTANTIALLY better in every way and the only way to achieve the ideal CG of 120mm.
7:50
8:59 God I'm glad I'm on Futaba. If I ever did get one of these it wouldn't be able to do that. R2006GS doesn't have telemetry and even if it did I would have to manually program the radio to display/react.
I love how you kept flying with one wheel XD
Another great video - thanks! This isn't related (but since I realize sometimes y'all read comments) I would really love to see a THP review of a Twisted Hobbys 43" EPP Crack Yak-55 XL! Yeah, I know, 3D airplanes appeal to a niche group but you guys can list the pros & cons while making any airplane look enjoyable. Thank you & happy flyin'! :)
Great video. Love the commentary. Instant sub!!
Shame you for using expo?? I think not!! EVERY plane I have gets maximum throw physically possible, then 50-60% expo to make it fly smooth in the middle sticks. No switches, no muss, no fuss. Im not exactly a noob -- Been flying 35 years. Not using cheap equipment with limited functionality, went from JR 28x to a Spektrum IX20se. Just works for me!
I have one of these. It's still in the box. I'm not sure I even want it after hearing about all of the landing gear issues. The new gear isn't exactly cheap and if it's just gonna break, it's money wasted. It's not cost-effective to ship back to Horizon, so I dunno what I'll do with it.
I'd rather a gear snap than a wing support. They are working on cheaper, and more robust, replacements. Another thing of note, this is the quietest plane I've ever flown.
Please compare to the GWS Slow Stick, I loved that plane as my starter.
The GWS Slow Stick was unironically my favourite plane I ever owned. Hilariously cleap looking, but you couldn't kill it, couldn't stall it, and it'd do loops all day.
Lol finally came in stock in Australia and got a couple of flights in before i lost my evevator thumb screw 😂 out of stock in Australia so have a replacement pack coming from the states 😂
If you get the Spektrum cable you can reset the receiver to default making it a standard receiver that's not locked.
Yep! That’s what we did and we mention that in the video. Our issue is we wish folks didn’t have to jump through hoops and pay for a cable to fly the plane the way they want to. We wish the plane was offered as a PNP for that reason. Personal preference. 👍
@@TailHeavyProductions Oh missed that part, and totally agree! Keep up the great vids
Common 1K likes! These guys deserve it!
Thank! you very! much! for the review, I want to see Twin Timber. please! :)
Can you guys provide a link for the replacement tires you used, I tried some off amazon wrong sizes. Thanks
They're FunCub tires - check out MrMpx
2:05 That weight...or lack thereof...also makes them a nightmare to fly on all but the calmest days. Some of my club members have these things and they refuse to fly them in a light breeze sometimes, because even that is enough to upset the aircraft. Meanwhile I take my heavy balsa nitro stuff up in 15 gusting 20 crosswinds all the time and they don't care.
Sometimes you want a little weight. My most recent flight was a maiden flight on a Saito 82 powered Nexa/VQ A6M5 in the afore mentioned winds. The guys at that club meeting who had foamies didn't even unpack their aircraft because it would yeet them off the pit tables...
For sure! For us and some folks, the lack of weight *even in the wind* adds to the fun. Backwards flying in the wind is one of our favorite things! This bird fits that bill just right. That's the great thing about this hobby, you can pick from so many niches and do what makes you happy. Thanks for watching! 🙂
my last maiden was with a stick that ended with the plane coming back in pieces. funny thing is i never charged the rx battery. next time i will be sure to add a 1000 micro farad capacitor to the rx to avoid voltage drops
@@TailHeavyProductions Maybe it's just me being super used to balsa nitro stuff but I don't really feel like I have much say in what these super light foamies are doing. I flew a 3s FT Simple cub, Simple Scout, and an EFlite Draco; all three felt underpowered and unsteady on their wings as if they just didnt want to be flying. I knew for fact they were fine but it just didnt feel right how slow they were up there and how easily they got knocked around by turbulence.
Genuinely think the FT stuff would fly better heavier. Need to finish and fly my OS FS26 powered Simple Scout to find out.
Nice! Is that beach in Wells Maine? Pass Ogunquit route 1?
Great video guys
Great review
Do you have a link for those fun cub tires?
Thank you,
You guys are the only voice I listen to regarding how good any new RC plane is. ESPECIALLY Horizon. Thanks for the great content! 👌
Thank you!
Hey!!!! 2K LIkes.... DId I miss the Challenge????? This plane should be in everyone's hangar... BTW 4S 2200 with 3 Blade MAS Prop... Yippee!!!!! Sadly I only have Timber wheels to put on it... Still on my second bag of spare LG....
Wanna learn how to fly RC? Whatever you get, start with a 3.8 prop (3.8 inches / revolution). This is like a granny gear. Slow stable flight, much less likely to lose speed in a turn and stall.
I want one.
I have a request for Tail Heavy.
Could you mimic a STOL Drag competition with RC aircraft you own.
Cheap investment, some white upside down paint and a traffic cone should make fun and entertaining content.
I will bounce one on for you .
Def not a bad idea. Love your username btw 😁
The name is truly inspired buy tail heavy.
Your humor has been smashing it lately.
9:10 LOOOL 3.1v/cell. You'll use your full capacity then. That's about where most car ESCs, including all the ones in the Arrma RTRs Horizon themselves sell, will trip their LVC. 3.6 is still pretty much storage charge/half charged.
Great video, this is awesome 👍
I've noticed they are on backorder for a while. Maybe they are addressing some of its issues...
👀 We did hear through the grapevine that a fix is being made for the gear design. Fingers crossed!
Laughed at the Brian Phillips comment😂
Then i saw the length of his video😮
dang I was envisioning a video comparing this to the GWS Slow stick and then I watched this again and saw the ending
Is there a link to the bush tires you guys used?
At the 1:20 mark, those GWS Slow Sticks are me and my coworker's! Mine's the one at he upper right lol
That's awesome! Small world.
@@TailHeavyProductions Yep! We had GWS do a production run for us back in late 2019, 3000 kits!
@@SharphandXeno That's awesome. Shoot me an email if you've got extras you would sell. Definitely interested! Email is on our channel info page. 👍
I don't think I've ever owned a 'good' plane. Most of my planes started with a trip to DollarTree. $200 for a slow stick is 'right out!'
Is there a hobbyking version?
Do you guys still plan on doing a bush conversion for the fms beaver? If so, I’d love to see it in action
Yep! It’ll be worth the wait. We promise.
@@TailHeavyProductions Good to hear. Can’t wait!
Nice vid, just a quick question, since you have the og fun cub, is there any way to find parts or are there none left? I have one and i am looking for spares. Thanks in advance, keep up the great vids!
Ebay is your best bet! Thanks
10:45 Gonna go have a peep at your other uploads. I kinda wanna see if you've done anything nitro...
Ok no way I'm paying $200 for a stick. Went into the video expecting a much lower price point.
What is the name/model of the wheels you upgraded to?
Are them wheels off the hobbyzone carbon cub or something else
FunCub
Bravo.perfect
Whuy does this airplane cost 4200.00? There is no Fuselage and the wings and tail surface are simple, I don't get why it is so expensive. Does it come with the radio installed?
Whare can i get the fun cub tire?
To be fair I have an OG slow stick with the wood built up wing kit
Just how hard is it to get a big broad wing and a full tail feather set , a long carbon fibre tube and instead of those cheap CF landing gear use metal. Even just buy wing and tail gear make your own
