    Our thoughts on the servo issues:
    It's good for people to know about the necessary mods to prevent the linear servo issues discussed in various places online. Since it's clearly a well-understood issue by most RC folks in general, it's very likely Horizon knows about it, and they should:
    -Lubricate the gears from the factory
    -Send some lube with the plane, or tell people how to fix it via a product bulletin

    Hey guys nice video! Spectacular flying as usual. I highly reccomend using Hob-E-Lube HL 657 white grease on all your linear servos. I put it on the gears and all over the little jack screw. After applying it and cycling the servos, you will immediately notice they move faster, and sound way more smooth and more healty. In the long run, this will prevent the motors from burning out, and will stop the plastic piece that rides on the jack screw from eventually stripping out prematurely. I don't know for sure, but perhaps it will help with the binding issue you are having. It is a plastic friendly grease that will not degrade the material. I have bought older umx planes off of ebay in which the linear servos could not move at all. After applying the grease and moving the sevos back and fourth by hand a few times, these old servos came to life again like they were new!

      I wore out the contacts for the strip on these linear servos on my Blade MCPX helicopter I flew it so much. LOL Can't grease that area though. Wish they could use a regular style servo. I've seen some really tiny ones, but probably still won't be quite as light I guess. Great video guys.

    No matter what UMX with linear servos, it's only a matter of time before trouble arises. Sometimes the excessive chatter problem can be solved by hitting it with contact cleaner. The long-term solution is to replace with nano servos. Of course that's not going to be worth it (bother or expense) for a lot of hobbyists, but I've found satisfaction there.

    • @jakeclauson9863
      @jakeclauson9863 7 месяцев назад +2

      I always hated linear servos. But lately have been coming around to appreciate the newer versions from horizon. Iv found regular nano servos to be very hit or miss and really inconsistent with travel. The 1.7g servos are twitchy at best. Smallest worth having is the 2g imo. I'm building an fpv umx timber evo and had to ditch the flight controller to gain access to more channels. Was about to use 2g servos but decided to go with linear instead just cuz they've gotten to be more consistent, longer throw, faster and stronger. But they are obnoxiously loud at times

    What an absolutely awesome viddy from the lunatics in the Granite State! I really love the multitude of flying locales, and all the different flying situations you always put your models in, no matter what the size of the aircraft. So I too had the dreaded elevator lock-out (about half-way thru the second battery), and I wasn't even banging on it too harshly, just doing some mellow figure eights out in front of me, no flaps, plenty of flying speed, and WHAMO! She spins in totally unresponsive and snaps the nose off. Oh well, I repaired it and gave it to one of my flying buddies sons. He really enjoys flying it. All the best to you guys, keep the awesome content rolling my friends!

    I bought the original UMX T.Timber a few years ago. It had good 2S performance and flew well indoors and we even landed it on a picnic table (with a raised edge). However, I flew it with floats on a pond and the wind flipped it over, shorting out the ailerons. I ordered a new wing, but also upgraded to the newer Blue Turbo Timber, which will NEVER fly off of water.

    Another issue that I’ve had with two of these is the push rod extension attachment. They seem to be connected with tape. You have to be very careful when making mechanical adjustments. The first time it happened the rudder went flapping in the wind and the resulting crash totaled it. HH did make good on it but not without a lecture about how it wasn’t really a warrantee issue.

    I had the sticking elevator servo issue with both my first AND second UMX EVO. HH replaced the first after it crashed due to the stuck servo. The replacement plane did the same on the 4th or 5th flight but I did not go back to HH with the issue. I sprayed the servo with silicone a bunch of times as I worked the elevator up and down for I don't know how many times. I've since had maybe 50 flights without the servo issue rearing its ugly head. The plane, due to the crash repairs, looks like crap up close but sill flies well.

    My tips on preventing the servos from jamming up.
    - Dab some synthetic grease in the "worm" screw in the linear servo.
    - Try using as little electronic trim as possible on the elevator. Find the sweet spot and manually adjust the linkage to trim
    - Set MAX travel on all servos to ~95%

    The pushrod mod is a must. Also, the ultimate umx timber is as follows: buy the timber kit. Install micro servos, upgrade all control hinges, and up the size of the tailwheel along with up size tailwheel mount. Make sure CG is good and you have a umx timber with no SAFE , more throw than you'd ever need, and rudder authority on the ground. The ultimate front yard plane.

    Right now these are $89 at Towerhobbies in the Scratch and Dent section. Their only “defect”is bubbling stickers because the surfaces were not prepped properly. I just ordered two. As of 11/25 these are still in stock, and still $89. At that price it’s a steal! Order over $100 you get free shipping and $20 back in Tower cash…that’s insane!
    I get wanting to see how much performance you can get from these UMX planes, but just from looking at the delicate control horns, foam construction, and tiny servos, I fly mine more gently and don’t subject them to high G’s.
    Any repairs I use Beacon Foam Tac, which is magical stuff! Also Deoxit 5 is great for taking the chatter out of linear servos. I have a large fleet of UMX planes, many are discontinued, so I hate to fly them too hard and risk losing a plane that’s practically irreplaceable.

      @@CaliforniaOutdoorsman Yeah, there seems to be some reported issues with elevator servos locking up on RCG threads. One suggestion is to limit servo travel to about 95% to prevent overextending. It’s a good idea to slightly reduce linear servo travel on every UMX plane. Doesn’t need much, maybe 95-98%, just not 100%. it’s just a good insurance policy to reduce the odds of linear servo lock at ends. Spray the servos with Deoxit 5 lube as well. Good luck!

      I just set all to 95% to be safe as I change trims later.... always need to be below 100 actual... 95% plus trims and mixes is often >100% and that is fatal for these little linear servos. Also, frequently check for dirt, especially in the wing servos. Last but not least... for all but high alpha low speed --' maybe DON'T go to the innermost hole on the control surface horn... that adds a lot of load, (like 2-3x!) for a given throw and airspeed.

    Unfortunately ive lost the ability to fly nearly as often as id like, and the UMX has been my fallback. After running my UMX turbo timber 2s version 1 for 3 years, its sadly time for a replacement. I learned fixed wing and was introduced to STOL with this tiny fellow. Learned to flip over a wire, and eventually ripped the gear CLEAN off. Glued back, and still can use floats! Battery options have always been TERRIBLE also. Mine had the elevator lock up as well, second flight it locked full down coming out of an outside snap into inverted. I was forced to cut throttle and let it come down through the trees.
    Horizon replaced my plane for me thankfully.
    Weird thing is that after cycling the power the elevator unlocked and has been working perfectly since then (probably 20 flights without issues now).
    Still think this is the best UMX Timber to date, I've got them all and this one is awesome other than the elevator issue which seems to be a little too common.
    I don't think it's the fault of AS3X that you can't dial in more elevator travel, the linear servo only has so much travel possible and at 100% rates it's using it. I also moved all the pushrods inwards for more travel. It is what it is and it's one of the negatives of linear servos.
    It's unfortunate they made this one with the tail servos as part of the brick, would have made repairs so much easier if the servo could be replaced.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  7 месяцев назад +1

      Sorry to hear about your servo! Glad they replaced it. As for AS3X - by definition, AS3X limits full travel because in order for a gyro to work, it needs to have extra travel on either end to make adjustments in flight for extraneous inputs (turbulence, wind, etc). Think of it like how our GoPros/iPhones/Androids do video stabilization by means of cropping in their picture. Even though your radio says 100%, the servos still can physically move more so the AS3X can work. If AS3X was able to be truly disabled, you'd be able to get more travel from the radio.

      @@TailHeavyProductions I know what you're saying works with standard servo equipped planes when you unlock the receiver and get access to another 25% travel in each direction. I like doing this on all my planes that have a standard receiver so I use all the servo resolution then limit the travel mechanically to prevent binding and damaging hinges.
      Where I'm not sure it works is with Linear servos, I'll have a look and see how much of the linear servo travel is used when rates are at 100%. I'm pretty sure there's very little available travel remaining once at full stick deflection and 100% rates. It's also why many people set their rates to 98% on UMX planes in order to prevent over-driving the linear servo.
      We can talk more on RcG's
      Keep the vids coming, weather has been terrible here, I haven't been able to get out flying for a while so videos are all I have for now 😜

      Heat up a small rod, melt hole through fuselage, easy access for screwdriver. Silly design, but the hole doesn't impact anything (just be careful of course) and it makes adjustments a breeze. If you look closely in the video, you'll see they've created a hole as well.

    Great video, really enjoyed it, thank you! :)
    I have a couple of questions regarding this model:
    1. Will it be a good first RC plane? I have plenty experience flying FPV multirotors, but no experience with planes.
    2. Is the servo in question easily replaceable/repairable?
    3. Will I be able to convert this model into FPV sometime down the road?
    Thanks!

    • @Tp_132
      @Tp_132 2 месяца назад +1

      1. It definitely isn't the easiest first model but it could work as a first. 2. No it is attached to the main control board of the plane but i have mine set to 97% throws and have never run into an issue. 3. The channel Inverted Aviators actually have a video guide on how they converted theirs to fpv

    When it fails out of the box, Horizon has always come through for me. What bothers me is that their gear is Windows only and they do not disclose this anywhere. Which wouldn't be an issue if they didn't ship products that are not ready for prime time. The NX10 I bought had been out for almost 2 years, but needed a firmware update out of the box. Still does, and always will be crippled as a result. But I found this out after 6 months, so I'm stuck with it.
    Love my UMX Turbo Timber, but that NX10 represents my last Spektrum Transmitter purchase. Radiomaster is all I will use going forward. Oddly enough, for the same reason many people went with Windows instead of Apple. Radiomaster is a little harder to figure out, but it's a fraction of the price. Ironic.

    I literally lost this plane on the maiden today. Full elevator servo lock full up. I thought I had lost connection until I arrived on scene and every other servo was in working order. Completely bashed the front end in. Even have a video of it just stuck. Super sad honestly, flew great for a few minuits.

    I see you guys are sampling Michael Cline RC. I found his channel 3 years ago and watch all his videos...not a lot of talk, just with the sticks. In my humble opinion, he's the smoothest most skilled RC pilot I've seen. It seems to come from 40+ years of flying and having done pattern flying. You guys are good too, especially at pushing a plane's envelope.
