Absolutely mental track, love it. The tapping is John Bonham, supposedly Bonzo used his bare hands to tap out those 16th notes on an empty guitar case.
guitar case is right but that really sounds like the beads of a stick. It’s a little sharp. I could believe it’s his fingers, they were that strong but he’d have to be smacking em or the mic is super close.
I’ve been spending too much time following your reactions…I was in a cafe yesterday looking at the menu when I noticed ‘GFO’ written next to some options. When contemplating its meaning I immediately thought ‘Go F*ck Oneself’ instead of ‘Gluten Free Option’ 🤣🤣🤣
Now you're starting to understand the band's inspiration from Tolkien and Lord of the Rings. This has got to be one of my top 3 favorite Led Zeppelin songs. It's got everything to like about the band - Robert Plant's vocals ranging from a whisper to a scream, Bonzo and John Paul Jones in perfect sync and plenty of virtuosity from Jimmy Page. Love watching your reactions to the transitions especially - you must listen like I do, with it turned up to 11! This is another one I'll watch over and over. Thanks Mark!
From the internets..."According to Chris Welch and Geoff Nicholls in John Bonham: A Thunder of Drums, Bonzo used his bare hands to tap out those 16th notes on an empty guitar case."
Yes mark, they were big fans of lord of the rings. You absolutely need to check out “song remains the same/rain song” live at Madison Square Garden 1973. It has a very big lord of the rings vibe. The performance was part of their movie “The Song Remains The Same” which is a mix of love concert footage and fantasy sequences by each of the band members. It is a must see.
Robert was a HUGE Tolkien fan….as well as an avid student of Welsh, Nordic mythology and The history of the British Isles…and it came through in some of the lyrics that he wrote when in Zeppelin and later in his solo career. The other guys…..not so much.
Mark your reactions are by far and away the most entertaining on RUclips, you never fail to put a smile on my face 😁😁 would love to see you react to the live version of Kashmir from the 2007 Celebration Day gig, the boys are all in their 60’s apart from Jason Bonham (the original Zep drummer John Bonhams son) and they absolutely smash it, I’m sure you’d lose your fucking mind (as always 😂) and give us all one of the best reactions ever seen, love what you do man, keep up the amazing work 🙌🙌🙌
Love your reactions, I'm 64 grew up with this music, you make me feel like I'm hearing it for the first time, I know what's coming in the songs and can't wait to see your reaction
Def one of my top 5 songs. I was born in the 70s and everyone I knew listened to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and truly all the greats of the 60s. I love the Doors too! The song I wish you would react to is Moby Dick. Bono freaking KILLS IT! Your mind will be blown away...I promise!
If I was to recommend ONE song that perfectly captures the essence and vibe of LedZeppelin it would not be 'Stairway' . . . it's this track right here. And yes, the rhythm section in this song is pure groove, pure genius.
Hector, it's tappy-taps by drummer John Bonham. And the incredibly talented bass player's name is John Paul Jones. Pure fucking brilliance. Just like your reactions to Zeppelin.
That entire Led Zeppelin II album is FIRE! They recorded some of the songs in Quadrophonic Sound. Put a speaker in all four corners of your room and listen to it swirl -- but first Blast the Sound! CRANK IT UP! we used to say!
One of my absolute favorites you can hear the tapping on the guitar case and yes the tappy taps lol are all on a guitar case not a drum kit but it completes the beat perfectly
Let's Get the Led Out!!!! 💯 Yes he says...In the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair. But Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her. That would be John Bonham on the drums...and yes Moby Dick, no words just music
Oh, do yourself a favor and watch the movie, “The Song Remains The Same.”. I was lucky enough to be at one of the venues where the soundtrack was recorded. Still have a complete ticket. Seattle 1977.
You mentioned 'Moby Dick'. The studio version is 'okay', but you really need to see the recorded live version. It was Bonzo's chance to really show off what he could do. The recorded version is about 20 odd minutes long. That was not atypical. He does just about everything that he can think of [ barring using four sticks, as he did on the track of the same name on IV ], and varies the pace , tempo & volume throughout, not just hitting everything as hard & fast as he can. At some point, he will put down the sticks & play the drums with his bare hands. During Moby Dick, the rest of the band would wander off backstage for a drink, smoke or 'whatever'. When Bonzo stopped playing just hands, & picked up his sticks again, a roadie would run back & tell them " sticks"; which was their cue to wander back, although the solo could go on for several more minutes.
Awesome reaction!, 😃 and yesss that is the Gollemses he's singing about. Your right, Led Zeppelin's bipolarism is beautiful! 🥰 another great example of it is a tune called "Black Dog" Thank you! Peace! ☮

You are correct, the song is A Lord Of The Rings themed thing. You'll hear Morda, Gollum etc. The Ramble On is the walking on the LOTR journey. Robert Plant was into it all at the time having read the book(s)
That "tapping" you hear in the beginning was Bonham playing on a guitar case. Zeppelin II is easily Jonsey's (bassist) best work. A master class in blues rock bass playing. And I know we're not supposed to do this, but the live version of Moby Dick from Earl's Court 1971 is the version to react to.
John Bonzo Bonham is the God of thunder on the drums and Jimmy Page is the wizard on guitar! The tapping you hear is John Bonham using his drum sticks on his drum case he is a human metronome!
Mark, I apologize for a lengthy post but I wanted to set the stage for you. You say that you are on a journey of music discovery so I challenge you to expand this to include a journey of music performance. Obviously this entails live performances. I recently discovered a 10-year old music production (I call it a production as it is way more than just performing a song) that just blew me away. It is such a magical production that it brings me to tears of joy every time I watch it. Once you have experienced both Stairway to Heaven and Heart, you are free to experience what I call a masterpiece production. Not only is the performance top notch, but considering the situation, it was magical.
