    Interesting video. I find that YOUR idea of "cheap camera" and inexpensive gear are totally different than mine! I still shoot with a Nikon D90 and a Nikon D300s. Both work marvelously with never any problems.

    Enjoyed the conversation, thank you. I'm a hobbyist and beginner who uses a fuji x-t30 aps-c camera, so I am glad to hear and see that you were able to take lovely photos with older, very inexpensive gear. When I watch a photographer achieving beautiful results with a lens, if they are "my type" of pictures, it makes me want to get that lens. But I remind myself I have so much more to learn about what I already have and how to get the most from it.

    I'm still shooting with a Canon T6i. But I do have an L Series lens. The photos are all just for me, so I'm happy with them. Thanks for another great video! Incidentally, I hope you guys fully appreciate just how beautiful the women there are.

    You said it, professional gear is much reliable and and and, but you can still get good shots with entry level gear, it's always who's behind that camera :)

    Great video as always, Andrew! I used cheap gear for the first 6 years of my photography journey. It wasn't but just a few years ago I got to upgrade my camera body from a Canon Rebel T5 to a Canon 5d mark iii. I was still getting great photos from that Canon Rebel T5. When I was taking photos for ShadyRays sunglasses company. A few of my photos made their online ads in a few different countries.

    Definitely, the entry level Cameras and gear do give good results. I use to shoot with Canon EOS 60D and I liked the shots straight out of the Camera.

    Hi Andrew, I switched to mirrorless long ago. I was interested to hear that the EVF/LCD image display was giving you false clues - I agree. That is both the good and the bad of EVF/LCD with no OVF. If you are an experienced OVF shooter, the "tv screen" visual of mirrorless will throw you off. Some newcomers to mirrorless don't have that issue because they have not aimed with an OVF. Each mirrorless body and brand has unique defaults and also different adjustments for EVF brightness, colour, refresh rate, DOF preview (some models for example aim at f/4 even though you fit an f/1.8 lens). Many bodies offer an OFF for exposure simulation so the the EVF does not show image brightness change. You have to know how each body behaves.

    Hello Andrew - as always with your content, I like the piece and the concept - but your view of "cheap secondhand photography" is a long way off what most students can afford when starting out.
    Next time - please take a step back to truely affordable student kit - how about a Nikon D50 DSLR and the 18-55 kit lens? That is a sub $100 buy in most of the world - I got one last year.
    As you found - you can't just get "pop" and "separation" from a kit zooom compared with wide aperture primes - instead you have to separate using contrast and colour and movement and lighting and patterns. It's a great creative composition exercise for any photographer to try this and takes composition away from the "lazy" approach of an 85mm F1.4 portrait with near everything blurred out by the bokeh.
    So - do you need more than 6MP APS sensor to deliver a great portrait? Can you "separate" the subject from the environment with more than just wide-aperture "blur"? Can you nail the exposure using the histogram and tiny 2010 era LCD without liveview rather than using a big LCD and an EVF?
    Also - the D50 has a surprising twist - it syncronises flash at 1/500th and being Nikon, can take inexpensive old high voltage flashguns. Now how's that for a challenge for you and the students Andrew !!

  • @dhaneshr
    @dhaneshr 21 день назад

    i was expecting you use a D700 instead of a modern Z50! Kit lens nowadays are way better than those from yesteryears due to their advanceed manufacturing processes and modern coatings. Sensors now, even in the cheapest versions of mirrorless cameras have much more dynamic range. Also, RM2750 is not cheap.

    Hi Andrew, I'm in Australia and prices for even used gear cost much more than in many Countries, I'm presently using a 6 year old Nikon D5600 with just the kit zoom lenses that come with it, the 18-55 and 70 to 300mm but I want to buy a 40mm prime micro lens f2.8 but since I've had this camera, the mirrorless market has exploded and now I'm in a dilemma, do i invest with better prime older DX or AF lenses that will fit my camera or sell the lot and try and afford the mirrorless cameras? I do enjoy using the view finder to compose my shots as opposed to using a screen, is it worth keeping my older DSLR system and invest in better prime lenses? It seems the mantra of many Photographers is don't worry about the body, just invest in glass, but what if that glass is no longer being made and the mount system is entirely different?

    I like your model photos, they are great regardless of the type of lens. I did 35+ years film photography. I switched slowly for last 15 years to digital photography starting with simple point and shoot camera to a full frame camera which came with lens kit 24mm-70mm at f3.5. I like to shoot between 45 to 55mm focal lens, I agreed that my background is not as blurry as it would be with a prime lens that can have f1.2 to f2.8 like my old film lens. On the other hand, I know my expecting result. I don't do anymore professional photography, so I am not going to buy prime lenses. I just go and enjoy taking pictures and making my own project. Since it is a digital mirrorless camera, I still can use my old film prime lenses on it.
